In this survey article, we discuss some recent progress on geometric analysis on manifold with ends. In the final section, we construct manifolds with ends with oscillating volume functions which may turn out to have a different heat kernel estimates from those provided by known results.
We obtain optimal estimates of the Poincaré constant of central balls on manifolds with finitely many ends. Surprisingly enough, the Poincaré constant is determined by the second largest end. The proof is based on the argument by Kusuoka-Stroock where the heat kernel estimates on the central balls play an essential role. For this purpose, we extend earlier heat kernel estimates obtained by the authors to a larger class of parabolic manifolds with ends.
We study Fredholm properties and index formulas for Dirac operators over complete Riemannian manifolds with straight ends. An important class of examples of such manifolds are complete Riemannian manifolds with pinched negative sectional curvature and finite volume.
We study the spectral theory of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with ends of warped product type. Our main result is an upper bound on the resonance counting function with a geometric constant expressed in terms of the respective Weyl constants for the core of the manifold and the base manifold defining the ends.
In many problems of PDE involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator on manifolds with ends, it is often useful to introduce radial or geodesic normal coordinates near infinity. In this paper, we prove the existence of such coordinates for a general class of manifolds with ends, which contains asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. We study the decay rate to the metric at infinity associated to radial coordinates and also show that the latter metric is always conformally equivalent to the metric at infinity associated to the original coordinate system. We finally give several examples ill…
We show $ 10/8$-type inequalities for some end-periodic $4$-manifolds which have positive scalar curvature metrics on the ends. As an application, we construct a new family of closed $4$-manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics.
We give a topological interpretation of the space of $L^2$-harmonic forms on Manifold with flat ends. It is an answer to an old question of J. Dodziuk. We also give a Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for the $L^2$-Euler characteristic of some of these Manifolds. These results are applications of general theorems on complete Riemannian Manifold whose Gauss-Bonnet operator is non-parabolic at infinity.
We construct a parametrix of a resolvent of elliptic differential operators acting on half-densities on manifolds with ends. The construction is carried out by introducing suitable pseudodifferential operators compatible with the end structure. Our class of pseudodifferential operators and symbols is independent of the choice of Riemannian metric on the manifold and applicable to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. As an application, we prove the essential self-adjointness of elliptic symmetric differential operators on manifolds.
We prove that simply connected open Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry, linear growth and sublinear filling growth (e.g. finite filling area) are simply connected at infinity.
We study the ends of a generic manifold, with respect to a unimodular measure on the space of pointed Riemannian manifolds with bounded curvatures. We apply our general result to the case of surfaces and obtain as corollaries a very precise description of generic leaves for foliations with invariant measures and of quotients of the hyperbolic plane by invariant random subgroups of the isometry group.
We use Furuta's result, usually referred to as ``10/8-conjecture'', to show that for any compact 3-manifold $M$ the open manifold $M\times\r$ has infinitely many different smooth structures. Another consequence of Furuta's result is existence of infinitely many smooth structures on open topological 4-manifolds with a topologically collarable end, provided there are only finitely many ends homeomorphic to it. We also show that for each closed spin 4-manifold there are exotic \rf's that can not be smoothly embedded into it.
This thesis studies moduli spaces of singular connections on 3-manifolds and manifolds with cylindrical ends. A Chern-Simons functional is defined for singular connections on 3-manifolds which are singular along a knot. The critical points of that Chern-Simons functional are flat singular connections. The Hodge-de Rham theory of singular flat connections is presented, yielding a topological condition for determining when a singular flat connection is isolated. Finally, moduli spaces of anti-self-dual singular connections are investigated on manifolds with cylindrical ends. The main analytical …
The purpose of this paper is to study the property of the resolvent of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold with various ends each of which has a different limit of the growth rate of the Riemannian measure at infinity, in particular, focusing on the limiting absorption principle. As a result, we will obtain the absolute continuity of the Laplace-Beltrami operator.
Taubes' gluing theorems establish the existence of ASD connections on closed, oriented 4-manifolds. We extend these gluing results to the mASD connections of Morgan-Mrowka-Ruberman on oriented 4-manifolds with cylindrical ends. As a corollary, we obtain an ASD-existence result in the presence of degenerate asymptotic flat connections.
We construct the Seiberg-Witten theory on 3-manifolds with Euclidean ends (connected sums of $\R^3$ and a compact manifold) with perturbations which approximate $*dx_3$ at infinity, and describe the structure of the moduli spaces. The setup is inspired by Taubes's program of relating the 4-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariant with `singular Gromov invariants' and has related applications.
We study the problem of existence of isoperimetric regions for large volumes, in $C^0$-locally asymptotically Euclidean Riemannian manifolds with a finite number of $C^0$-asymptotically Schwarzschild ends. Then we give a geometric characterization of these isoperimetric regions, extending previous results contained in [EM13b], [EM13a], and [BE13]. Moreover strengthening a little bit the speed of convergence to the Schwarzschild metric we obtain existence of isoperimetric regions for all volumes for a class of manifolds that we named $C^0$-strongly asymptotic Schwarzschild, extending results of…
We construct infinitely many examples of finite volume 4-manifolds with $T^3$ ends that do not admit any cusped asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics yet satisfy a strict logarithmic version of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality due to Dai-Wei. This is done by using estimates from Seiberg-Witten theory due to LeBrun as well as a method for constructing solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on noncompact manifolds due to Biquard. We also use constructions coming from the $Pin^-(2)$ monopole equations to obtain a larger class of manifolds where these techniques apply.
Let $M$ be a graph manifold such that each piece of its JSJ decomposition has the $\Bbb H^2 \times \Bbb R$ geometry. Assume that the pieces are glued by isometries. Then, there exists a complete Riemannian metric on $\Bbb R \times M$ which is an "eventually warped cusp metric" with the sectional curvature $K$ satisfying $-1 \le K <0$. A theorem by Ontaneda then implies that $M$ appears as an end of a 4-dimensional, complete, non-compact Riemannian manifold of finite volume with sectional curvature $K$ satisfying $-1 \le K <0$.
We construct examples of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds with an end of finite volume, which are not locally homogeneous. The manifolds are aspherical with fundamental group which is up to an infinite cyclic extension a semi-direct product of a lattice in a semi-simple group with a lattice in a Heisenberg group. Their universal covering is a cohomogeneity one deformation of a symmetric space of non-compact type.
We prove the existence of harmonic spinor fields in axisymmetric Riemannian 3-manifolds having nonnegative scalar curvature and asymptotic to the usual constant time hypersurface of Melvin's magnetic universe. Such a spinor can be used in the proof of the uniqueness of the magnetized Schwarzschild solution.
Motivated by the recent progress on positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with arbitrary ends and the Gromov's definition of scalar curvature lower bound for continuous metrics, we start a program on the positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with $C^0$ arbitrary ends. In this work as the first step, we establish the positive mass theorem of asymptotically flat manifolds with $C^0$ arbitrary ends when the metric is $W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ for some $p\in(n,\infty]$ and is smooth away from a non-compact closed subset with Hausdorff dimension $n-\frac{p}{p-1}$.…
We extend the study of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations on manifolds with ends of cylindrical type initiated by Chruściel and Mazzeo by finding a class of solutions to the fully coupled system on such manifolds. We show that given a Yamabe positive metric g, which is conformally asymptotically cylindrical on each end, and a 2-tensor K such that (tr K)^2 is bounded below away from zero and asymptotically constant, then we may find an initial data set (g',K') such that g' lies in the conformal class of g.
In this article, we give a proof for positive mass theorem of asymptotically flat manifolds with arbitrary ends when the dimension is no greater than seven. As an application, we also show a positive mass theorem for asymptotically locally Euclidean manifolds with necessary incompressible conditions.
This paper studies Dirac operators on end-periodic spin manifolds of dimension at least 4. We provide a sufficient condition for such an operator to be Fredholm for a generic end-periodic metric; this condition is shown to be necessary in dimension 4. We make use of end-periodic Dirac operators to give an analytical interpretation of an invariant of non-orientable smooth 4-manifolds due to Cappell and Shaneson. From this interpretation we show that some exotic non-orientable 4-manifolds do not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature.
We establish a sharp geometric constant for the upper bound on the resonance counting function for surfaces with hyperbolic ends. An arbitrary metric is allowed within some compact core, and the ends may be of hyperbolic planar, funnel, or cusp type. The constant in the upper bound depends only on the volume of the core and the length parameters associated to the funnel or hyperbolic planar ends. Our estimate is sharp in that it reproduces the exact asymptotic constant in the case of finite-area surfaces with hyperbolic cusp ends, and also in the case of funnel ends with Dirichlet boundary con…
Let $M$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold which is the union of a compact part and a finite number of Euclidean ends, $\RR^n \setminus B(0,R)$ for some $R > 0$, each of which carries the standard metric. Our main result is that the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded from $L^p(M) \to L^p(M; T^*M)$ for $1 < p < n$ and unbounded for $p \geq n$ if there is more than one end. It follows from known results that in such a case the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded for $1 < p \leq 2$ and unbounded for $p > n$; the result is new for $2 < p \leq n$. We also give some heat kernel estimates on such manifolds…
Motivated by a recent groundbreaking work of Ontaneda, we describe a sizable class of closed manifolds such that the product of each manifold in the class with the real line admits a complete metric of bounded negative sectional curvature which is an exponentially warped near one end and has finite volume near the other end.
The main goal of this paper is to prove that a connected bounded geometry complete Kahler manifold which has at least 3 filtered ends admits a proper holomorphic mapping onto a Riemann surface. This also provides a different proof of the theorem of Gromov and Schoen that, for a connected compact Kahler manifold whose fundamental group admits a proper amalgamated product decomposition, some finite unramified cover admits a surjective holomorphic mapping onto a curve of genus at least 2. The main results are also used to show that any properly ascending HNN extension with finitely generated base…
A famous result of Jurgen Moser states that a symplectic form on a compact manifold cannot be deformed within its cohomology class to an inequivalent symplectic form. It is well known that this does not hold in general for noncompact symplectic manifolds. The notion of Eliashberg-Gromov convex ends provides a natural restricted setting for the study of analogs of Moser's symplectic stability result in the noncompact case, and this has been significantly developed in work of Cieliebak-Eliashberg. Retaining the end structure on the underlying smooth manifold, but dropping the convexity and compl…
It has been showed by Byde that it is possible to attach a Delaunay-type end to a compact nondegenerate manifold of positive constant scalar curvature, provided it is locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of the attaching point. The resulting manifold is noncompact with the same constant scalar curvature. The main goal of this paper is to generalize this result. We will construct a one-parameter family of solutions to the positive singular Yamabe problem for any compact non-degenerate manifold with Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. If the dimension is…
This paper accomplishes two things. First, we construct a geometric analog of the rational Tits building for general noncompact, complete, finite volume $n$-manifolds $M$ of bounded nonpositive curvature. Second, we prove that this analog has dimension less than $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$.
We study the de Rham complex on a smooth manifold with a periodic end modeled on an infinite cyclic cover X' \to X. The completion of this complex in exponentially weighted L^2-norms is Fredholm for all but finitely many exceptional weights determined by the eigenvalues of the covering translation map H_*(X') \to H_*(X'). We calculate the index of this weighted de Rham complex for all weights away from the exceptional ones.
Let $M^m$, with $m\geq 3$, be an $m$-dimensional complete noncompact manifold isometrically immersed in a Hadamard manifold $\bar M$. Assume that the mean curvature vector has finite $L^p$-norm, for some $2\leq p\leq m$. We prove that each end of $M$ must either have finite volume or be non-parabolic.
We give a simple construction of new, complete, finite volume manifolds $M$ of bounded, nonpositive curvature. These manifolds have ends that look like a mixture of locally symmetric ends of different ranks and their fundamental groups are not duality groups.
In this thesis we prove analytic results about a cohomotopical Seiberg-Witten theory for a Riemannian, Spin$^c$(4), 4-manifold with periodic ends, $(X, g, τ)$ . Our results show that, under certain technical assumptions on $(X, g, τ)$, this new version is coherent and leads to Seiberg-Witten type invariants for this new class of 4-manifolds. In the first part, using Taubes criteria for end-periodic operators, we show that for a Riemannian 4-manifold with periodic ends, $(X, g)$, verifying certain topological conditions, the Laplacian, $Δ_+ : L^2_2({Λ^2}_+) \rightarrow L^2({Λ^2}_+)$, is a Fredh…
Simple approaches to the proofs of the L^2 Castelnuovo-de Franchis theorem and the cup product lemma which give new versions are developed. For example, suppose u and v are two linearly independent closed holomorphic 1-forms on a bounded geometry connected complete Kaehler manifold X with v in L^2. According to a version of the L^2 Castelnuovo-de Franchis theorem obtained in this paper, if u and v are pointwise linearly dependent, then there exists a surjective proper holomorphic mapping of X onto a Riemann surface for which u and v are pull-backs. Previous versions required both forms to be i…
We study complete, finite volume $n$-manifolds $M$ of bounded nonpositive sectional curvature. A classical theorem of Gromov says that if such $M$ has negative curvature then it is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold-with-boundary, and we denote this boundary $\partial M$. If $n\geq 3$, we prove that the universal cover of the boundary $\widetilde{\partial M}$ and also the $π_1M$-cover of the boundary $\partial\widetilde M$ have vanishing $(n-2)$-dimensional homology. For $n=4$ the first of these recovers a result of Nguyen Phan saying that each component of the boundary $\parti…
Asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat manifolds play a key role in constructing Topological Quantum Field Theories. It is particularly important to understand their behavior at the cylindrical ends and the natural restrictions on the geometry. In this paper we show that an orientable, connected, asymptotically cylindrical manifold (M,g) with Ricci-flat metric g can have at most two cylindrical ends. In the case where there are two such cylindrical ends then there is reduction in the holonomy group Hol(g) and (M,g) is a cylinder.
We consider a compact manifold whose boundary is a locally trivial fiber bundle and an associated pseudodifferential algebra that models fibered cusps at infinity. Using trace-like functionals that generate the 0-dimensional Hochschild cohomology groups, we express the index of a fully elliptic fibered cusp operator as the sum of a local contribution from the interior and a term that comes from the boundary. This answers the index problem formulated by Mazzeo and Melrose. We give a more precise answer in the case where the base of the boundary fiber bundle is the circle. In particular, for Dir…
In this paper we study the minimal and maximal $L^{2}$-cohomology of oriented, possibly not complete, Riemannian manifolds. Our focus will be on both the reduced and the unreduced $L^{2}$-cohomology groups. In particular we will prove that these groups are invariant under uniform homotopy equivalence quasi-isometric on the unbounded ends. A uniform map is a uniformly continuous map such that the diameter of the preimage of a subset is bounded in terms of the diameter of the subset itself. A map $f$ between two Riemannian manifolds $(X,g)$ and $(Y,h)$ is \textit{quasi-isometric on the unbounded…
We study the volume of extrinsic balls and the capacity of extrinsic annuli in minimal submanifolds which are properly immersed with controlled radial sectional curvatures into an ambient manifold with a pole. The key results are concerned with the comparison of those volumes and capacities with the corresponding entities in a rotationally symmetric model manifold. Using the asymptotic behavior of the volumes and capacities we then obtain upper bounds for the number of ends as well as estimates for the fundamental tone of the submanifolds in question.
We review the spectral analysis and the time-dependent approach of scattering theory for manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends. For the spectral analysis, higher order resolvent estimates are obtained via Mourre theory for both short-range and long-range behaviors of the metric and the perturbation at infinity. For the scattering theory, the existence and asymptotic completeness of the wave operators is proved in a two-Hilbert spaces setting. A stationary formula as well as mapping properties for the scattering operator are derived. The existence of time delay and its equality with th…
In this paper we continue our study of the Laplacian on manifolds with axial analytic asymptotically cylindrical ends initiated in~arXiv:1003.2538. By using the complex scaling method and the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle we prove exponential decay of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the non-threshold eigenvalues of the Laplacian on functions. In the case of a manifold with (non-compact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet Laplacian or the Neumann Laplacian. We show that the rate of exponential decay of an eigenfunction is prescribed by the distance from the corresponding eigenvalue to the ne…
