Using various finite dimensional approximation properties, four convex subsets of the tracial space of a unital C*-algebra are defined. Applications of these tracial invariants include: (1) An analogue of Szego's limit theorem for arbitrary self adjoint operators. (2) A McDuff factor embeds into the ultrapower of the hyperfinite II_1 factor if and only if it contains a weakly dense operator system which is injective. (3) There exists a simple, quasidiagonal, real rank zero C*-algebra with non-hyperfinite II_1 factor representations and which is not tracially AF. This answers negatively questions of Sorin Popa and, respectively, Huaxin Lin.
For an inclusion of the form $\Bbb C\subseteq M_n(\Bbb C)$, where $M_n(\Bbb C)$ is endowed with a state with diagonal weights $λ=(λ_1, ..., λ_n)$, we use Popa's construction, for non-tracial states, to obtain an irreducible inclusion of $II_1$ factors, $N^λ(Q)\subseteq M^λ(Q) $ of index $\sum \frac{1}{λ_i}$. $M^λ(Q)$ is identified with a subfactor inside the centralizer algebra of the canonical free product state on $Q\star M_N(\Bbb C)$. Its structure is described by ``infinite'' semicircular elements as in \cite{Ra3}. The irreducible subfactor inclusions obtained by this method are similar to…
We define a "tracial" analog of the Rokhlin property for actions of second countable compact groups on infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebras. We prove that fixed point algebras under such actions (and, in the appropriate cases, crossed products by such actions) preserve simplicity, Property (SP), tracial rank zero, tracial rank at most one, the Popa property, tracial Jiang-Su stability, Jiang-Su stability when the algebra is nuclear, infiniteness, and pure infiniteness. We also show that the radius of comparison of the fixed point algebra is no larger than that of the origin…
We consider the tracial crossed product algebra $M=A\rtimesΛ$ arising from a trace preserving action $σ:Λ\curvearrowright A$ of a discrete group $Λ$ on a tracial von Neumann algebra $A$. For a unitary subgroup $\mathcal{G}\subset \mathcal{U}(M)$, we study when this $\mathcal{G}$ can be conjugated into $\mathcal{U}(A)\cdotΛ$ in $M$. We provide a general sufficient condition for this to happen. Our result generalizes a result of Ioana, Popa and Vaes, which treats the case when $M$ is the group von Neumann algebra $L(Λ)$.
Various subsets of the tracial state space of a unital C*-algebra are studied. The largest of these subsets has a natural interpretation as the space of invariant means. II_1-factor representations of a class of C*-algebras considered by Sorin Popa are also studied. These algebras are shown to have an unexpected variety of II_1-factor representations. This general theory is related to various other problems as well. Applications include: (1) A characterization of R^ω-embeddable factors in terms of Lance's WEP. (2) A classification theorem for certain simple, nuclear C*-algebras with unique tra…
We define the notion of self-tracial stability for tracial von Neumann algebras and show that a tracial von Neumann algebra satisfying the Connes Embedding Problem is self-tracially stable if and only if it is amenable. We then generalize a result of Jung by showing that a separable tracial von Neumann algebra that satisfies the Connes Embedding Problem is amenable if and only if any two embeddings into $R^\mathcal{U}$ are ucp-conjugate. Moreover we show that for a II$_1$ factor $N$ satisfying CEP, the space $\mathbb{H}$om$(N, \prod_{k\to \mathcal{U}}M_k)$ of unitary equivalence classes of emb…
Given a topological graph $E$, we give a complete description of tracial states on the C*-algebra $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ which are invariant under the gauge action; there is an affine homeomorphism between the space of gauge invariant tracial states on $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ and Radon probability measures on the vertex space $E^0$ which are, in a suitable sense, invariant under the action of the edge space $E^1$. It is shown that if $E$ has no cycles, then every tracial state on $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ is gauge invariant. When $E^0$ is totally disconnected, the gauge invariant tracial states on $\mathrm{C}^*(…
We construct two types of unital separable simple $C^*$-alebras $A_z^{C_1}$ and $A_z^{C_2},$ one is exact but not amenable, and the other is non-exact. Both have the same Elliott invariant as the Jiang-Su algebra, namely, $A_z^{C_i}$ has a unique tracial state, $$(K_0(A_z^{C_i}), K_0(A_z^{C_i})_+, [1_{A_z^{C_i}} ])=(\mathbb Z, \mathbb Z_+,1)$$ and $K_{1}(A_z^{C_i})=\{0\}$ ($i=1,2$). We show that $A_z^{C_i}$ ($i=1,2$) is essentially tracially in the class of separable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-alebras of nuclear dimension 1. $A_z^{C_i}$ has stable rank one, strict comparison for positive elements…
A class of $C^*$-algebras, to be called those of generalized tracial rank one, is introduced, and classified by the Elliott invariant. A second class of unital simple separable amenable $C^*$-algebras, those whose tensor products with UHF-algebras of infinite type are in the first class, to be referred to as those of rational generalized tracial rank one, is proved to exhaust all possible values of the Elliott invariant for unital finite simple separable amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras. An isomorphism theorem for a special sub-class of those $C^*$-algebras are presented. This provide…
We introduce the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property for an automorphism alpha of a unital C*-algebra A, which is not assumed to be simple. We show that under suitable hypotheses, the associated crossed product C*-algebra C*(Z,A,alpha) is simple, and there is a bijection between the space of tracial states on C*(Z,A,alpha)$ and the alpha-invariant tracial states on A. We show that, for a minimal dynamical system (X,h) and a simple, separable, unital C*-algebra A, the automorphism beta which extends the action of h on C(X) has the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property, and hence that C*(Z,C(X,A),beta) has …
In this paper we introduce and study strongly singular maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras of type $II_1$ factors. We show that certain elements of free groups and of non-elementary hyperbolic groups generate such masas, and these also give new examples of masas for which Popa's invariant delta is 1. We also explore the connection between Popa's invariant and strong singularity.
We investigate the singular subspace of an inclusion of tracial von Neumann algebras. The singular subspace is a canonical N-N subbimodule of L^{2}(M) and it contains the quasinormalizer introduced by Popa, one-sided quasinormalizer introduced by Fang-Gao-Smith, and wq-normalizer introduced in Galatan-Popa (following upon work in Ioana-Peterson-Popa and Popa). We then obtain a weak notion of regularity (called spectral regularity) by demanding that the singular subspace of N in M generates M. By abstracting Voiculescu's original proof of absence of Cartan subalgebras, we show that there can be…
A classification theorem is obtained for a class of unital simple separable amenable Z-stable C*-algebras which exhausts all possible values of the Elliott invariant for unital stably finite simple separable amenable Z-stable C*-algebras. Moreover, it contains all unital simple separable amenable C*-algebras which satisfy the UCT and have finite rational tracial rank
We consider reduced crossed products of twisted C*-dynamical systems over C*-simple groups. We prove there is a bijective correspondence between maximal ideals of the reduced crossed product and maximal invariant ideals of the underlying C*-algebra, and a bijective correspondence between tracial states on the reduced crossed product and invariant tracial states on the underlying C*-algebra. In particular, the reduced crossed product is simple if and only if the underlying C*-algebra has no proper non-trivial invariant ideals, and the reduced crossed product has a unique tracial state if and on…
In this paper we show that certain simple locally recursive subhomogeneous (RSH) C*-algebras are tracially approximately interval algebras after tensoring with the universal UHF algebra. This involves a linear algebraic encoding of the structure of the local RSH algebra allowing us to find a path through the algebra which looks like a discrete version of [0,1] and exhausts most of the algebra. We produce an actual copy of the interval and use properties of C*-algebras tensored with UHF algebras to move the honest interval underneath the discrete version. It follows from our main result that su…
We introduce a notion of rank completion for bi-modules over a finite tracial von Neumann algebra. We show that the functor of rank completion is exact and that the category of complete modules is abelian with enough projective objects. This leads to interesting computations in the L^2-homology for tracial algebras. As an application, we also give a new proof of a Theorem of Gaboriau on invariance of L^2-Betti numbers under orbit equivalence.
In this paper we set up a representation theorem for tracial gauge norms on finite von Neumann algebras satisfying the weak Dixmier property in terms of Ky Fan norms. Examples of tracial gauge norms on finite von Neumann algebras satisfying the weak Dixmier property include unitarily invariant norms on finite factors (type ${\rm II}\sb 1$ factors and $M_n(\cc)$) and symmetric gauge norms on $L^\infty[0,1]$ and $\cc^n$. As the first application, we obtain that the class of unitarily invariant norms on a type ${\rm II}\sb 1$ factor coincides with the class of symmetric gauge norms on $L^\infty[0…
We develop the concept of weak tracial Rokhlin property for finite group actions on simple (not necessarily unital) C*-algebras and study its properties systematically. In particular, we show that this property is stable under restriction to invariant hereditary C*-algebras, minimal tensor products, and direct limits of actions. Some of these results are new even in the unital case and answer open questions asked by N. C. Phillips in full generality. We present several examples of finite group actions with the weak tracial Rokhlin property on simple stably projectionless C*-algebras. We prove …
We give complete descriptions of the tracial states on both the universal and reduced crossed products of a C*-dynamical system consisting of a unital C*-algebra and a discrete group. In particular, we also answer the question of when the tracial states are in canonical bijection with the invariant tracial states on the original C*-algebra. This generalizes the unique trace property for discrete groups. The analysis simplifies greatly in various cases, for example when the conjugacy classes of the original group are all finite, and in other cases gives previously known results, for example whe…
Following Elliott's earlier work, we show that the Elliott invariant of any finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra with finite nuclear dimension can always be described as a scaled simple ordered group pairing together with a countable abelian group which unifies the unital and nonunital, as well as stably projectionless cases. We also show that, for any given such invariant set, there is a finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra, whose Elliott invariant is the given set, a refinement of the range theorem of Elliott in the stable case. In the stably projectionless case, modified model $C^*$-algeb…
We present a classification theorem for a class of unital simple separable amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras by the Elliott invariant. This class of simple $C^*$-algebras exhausts all possible Elliott invariant for unital stably finite simple separable amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras. Moreover, it contains all unital simple separable amenable $C^*$-alegbras which satisfy the UCT and have finite rational tracial rank.
In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne extended Beurling's classical theorem to $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a finite, faithful, normal tracial state $τ$ when $1\le p\le \infty$. In this paper, using Arveson's non-commutative Hardy space $H^\infty$ in relation to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight $τ$, we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ when $0<p\leq\infty$. The proof of the main result relies on proofs …
Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group, ${\cal M}$ a McDuff factor von Neumann algebra, and $A$ a separable nuclear weakly dense C$^*$-subalgebra of ${\cal M}$. We show that if two centrally free actions of $G$ on ${\cal M}$ differ up to approximately inner automorphisms then they are outer conjugate by an approximately inner automorphism, in the operator norm topology, which makes $A$ invariant. In addition, when $A$ is unital, simple, and with a unique tracial state and $α$ is an automorphism of $A$ we also show that the aperiodicity of $α$ on the von Neumann algebra is equivalent to…
Popa introduced the tensor category $\tildeχ(M)$ of approximately inner, centrally trivial bimodules of a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor $M$, generalizing Connes' $χ(M)$. We extend Popa's notions to define the $\rm W^*$-tensor category $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$ of local endofunctors on a $\rm W^*$-category $\mathcal{C}$. We construct a unitary braiding on $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$, giving a new construction of a braided tensor category associated to an arbitrary $\rm W^*$-category. For the $\rm W^*$-category of finite modules over a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor, this yields a…
We investigate factoriality, Connes' type ${\rm III}$ invariants and fullness of arbitrary amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras using Popa's deformation/rigidity theory. Among other things, we generalize many previous structural results on amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras and we obtain new examples of full amalgamated free product factors for which we can explicitely compute Connes' type ${\rm III}$ invariants.
We give local upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the modular operator associated to an ergodic action of a compact quantum group on a unital C*-algebra. They involve the modular theory of the quantum group and the growth rate of quantum dimensions of its representations and they become sharp if other integral invariants grow subexponentially. For compact groups, this reduces to the finiteness theorem of Hoegh-Krohn, Landstad and Stormer. Consequently, compact quantum groups of Kac type admitting an ergodic action with a non-tracial invariant state must have representations whose dim…
Let $A$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $α\in Aut(A)$ be an automorphism. A necessary condition for $A\rtimes_α\Z$ being embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra is the existence of a faithful tracial state. If in addition, there is an automorphism $κ$ with $κ_{*1}=-{\rm id}_{K_1(A)}$ such that $α\circ κ$ and $κ\circ \af$ are asymptotically unitarily equivalent, then $A\rtimes_{\af}\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra. Consequently, in the case that $A$ is a unital AH-algebra (not necessarily simple) with torsion $K_1(A),$ $A\rtimes_α\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-al…
We introduce a class of unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norms with repect to $τ$ on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a faithful, normal, semifinite tracial weight $τ$. We prove a Beurling-Chen-Hadwin-Shen theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^α(\mathcal{M},τ)$, where $α$ is a unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norm with respect to $τ$, and $H^\infty$ is an extension of Arveson's noncommutative Hardy space. We use our main result to characterize the $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of a noncommutati…
Let H and K be two finite groups with a properly outer action on the II_1 factor M. We prove that the group type inclusions $M^H \subset M \rtimes K$, studied earlier by Bisch and Haagerup, have property T in the sense of Popa if and only if the group generated by H and K in the outer automorphism group of M has Kazhdan's property T. This construction yields irreducible, infinite depth subfactors with small Jones indices and property T standard invariant.
We associate Popa systems (= standard invariants of subfactors) to the finite dimensional representations of compact quantum groups. We characterise the systems arising in this way: these are the ones which can be ``represented'' on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is proved by an universal construction. We explicitely compute (in terms of some free products) the operation of going from representations of compact quantum groups to Popa systems and then back via the universal construction. We prove a Kesten type result for the co-amenability of compact quantum groups, which allows us to …
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
Motivated by recent work of Au, C{é}bron, Dahlqvist, Gabriel, and Male, we study regularity properties of the distribution of a sum of two selfad-joint random variables in a tracial noncommutative probability space which are free over a commutative algebra. We give a characterization of the invariant projections of such a sum in terms of the associated subordination functions.
We present a classification theorem for amenable simple stably projectionless C*-algebras with generalized tracial rank one whose $K_0$ vanish on traces which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. One of them is denoted by ${\cal Z}_0$ which has a unique tracial state and $K_0({\cal Z}_0)=\mathbb{Z}$ and $K_1({\cal Z}_0)=\{0\}.$ Let $A$ and $B$ be two separable simple $C^*$-algebras satisfying the UCT and have finite nuclear dimension. We show that $A\otimes {\cal Z}_0\cong B\otimes {\cal Z}_0$ if and only if ${\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0)={\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0).$ A class of simp…
We establish several properties of the free Stein dimension, an invariant for finitely generated unital tracial $*$-algebras. We give formulas for its behaviour under direct sums and tensor products with finite dimensional algebras. Among a given set of generators, we show that (approximate) algebraic relations produce (non-approximate) bounds on the free Stein dimension. Particular treatment is given to the case of separable abelian von Neumann algebras, where we show that free Stein dimension is a von Neumann algebra invariant. In addition, we show that under mild assumptions $L^2$-rigidity …
The von Neumann algebra free product of arbitary finite dimensional von Neumann algebras with respect to arbitrary faithful states, at least one of which is not a trace, is found to be a type~III factor possibly direct sum a finite dimensional algebra. The free product state on the type~III factor is what we call an extremal almost periodic state, and has centralizer isomorphic to $L(\freeF_\infty)$. This allows further classification the type~III factor and provides another construction of full type~III$_1$ factors having arbitrary $\Sd$~invariant of Connes. The free products considered in th…
Inspired by a well-known characterization of the index of an inclusion of II$_1$ factors due to Pimsner and Popa, we define an index-type invariant for inclusions of operator systems. We compute examples of this invariant, show that it is multiplicative under minimal tensor products, and explain how it generalizes the quantum Lovász theta invariant for a matricial system defined by Duan, Severini, and Winter.
Results of Haagerup and Schultz (2009) about existence of invariant subspaces that decompose the Brown measure are extended to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated to a tracial von Neumann algebra. These subspaces are used to decompose an arbitrary operator in this class into the sum of a normal operator and a spectrally negligible operator. This latter result is used to prove that, on a bimodule over a tracial von Neumann algebra that is closed with respect to logarithmic submajorization, every trace is spectral, in the sense that the trace value on an operator depends only on the …
We show that, if a simple $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ is topologically finite-dimensional in a suitable sense, then not only $K_{0}(A)$ has certain good properties, but $A$ is even accessible to Elliott's classification program. More precisely, we prove the following results: If $A$ is simple, separable and unital with finite decomposition rank and real rank zero, then $K_{0}(A)$ is weakly unperforated. If $A$ has finite decomposition rank, real rank zero and the space of extremal tracial states is compact and zero-dimensional, then $A$ has stable rank one and tracial rank zero. As a consequence, if $…
I combine recent results in the structure theory of nuclear C*-algebras and in topological dynamics to classify certain types of crossed products in terms of their Elliott invariants. In particular, transformation group C*-algebras associated to free minimal Z^d-actions on the Cantor set with compact space of ergodic measures are classified by their ordered K-theory. In fact, the respective statement holds for finite dimensional compact metrizable spaces, provided that projections of the crossed products separate tracial states. Moreover, C*-algebras associated to certain minimal homeomorphism…
Given a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ and a compactly aligned product system $X$ of essential C$^*$-correspondences over the monoid $P$, we show that there is a bijection between the gauge-invariant KMS$_β$-states on the Nica-Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{NT}(X)$ of $X$ with respect to a gauge-type dynamics, on one side, and the tracial states on the coefficient algebra $A$ satisfying a system (in general infinite) of inequalities, on the other. This strengthens and generalizes a number of results in the literature in several directions: we do not make any extra assumptions on $P$ and $X$, …
In 2016 and 2017, Haihui Fan, Don Hadwin and Wenjing Liu proved a commutative and noncommutative version of Beurling's theorems for a continuous unitarily invariant norm $α$ on $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},μ)$ and tracial finite von Neumann algebras $\left( \mathcal{M},τ\right) $, respectively. In the paper, we study unitarily $\|\|_{1}$-dominating invariant norms $α$ on finite von Neumann algebras. First we get a Burling theorem in commutative von Neumann algebras by defining $H^α(\mathbb{T},μ)=\overline {H^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},μ)}^{σ(L^α\left( \mathbb{T} \right),\mathcal{L}^{α^{'}}\left( \mathbb{T}…
Let ${\cal A}_1$ be the class of all unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras $A$ such that $A\otimes U$ has tracial rank at most one for all UHF-algebras of infinite type. It has been shown that amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras in ${\cal A}_1$ which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem can be classified up to isomorphism by the Elliott invariant. We show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B$ has tracial rank at most one for one of unital simple infinite dimensional AF-algebra $B.$ In fact, we show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B\in {\cal A}_1$ for so…
Let $\M$ be a type ${\rm II}_1$ factor with a faithful normal tracial state $τ$ and let $\M^ω$ be the ultrapower algebra of $\M$. In this paper, we prove that for every operator $T\in \M^ω$, there is a family of projections $\{P_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$ in $\M^ω$ such that $TP_t=P_tTP_t$, $P_s\leq P_t$ if $s\leq t$, and $τ_ω(P_t)=t$. Let $\mathfrak{M}=\{Z \in \M: \text{there is a family of projections} \{P_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1} \text{in} \M \text{such that} ZP_t=P_tZP_t, P_s\leq P_t \text{if} s\leq t, \text{and} τ(P_t)=t\}$. As an application we show that for every operator $T\in \M$ and $ε>0$, ther…
A $C^*$-algebra $A$ is said to have the ideal property if each closed two-sided ideal of $A$ is generated by the projections inside the ideal, as a closed two sided ideal. $C^*$-algebras with the ideal property are generalization and unification of real rank zero $C^*$-algebras and unital simple $C^*$-algebras. It is long to be expected that an invariant (see [Stev] and [Ji-Jiang], [Jiang-Wang] and [Jiang1]) , we call it $Inv^0(A)$ (see the introduction), consisting of scaled ordered total $K$-group $(\underline{K}(A), \underline{K}(A)^{+},ΣA)_Λ$ (used in the real rank zero case), the tracial …
Motivated by the relation between the Drinfeld double and central property (T) for quantum groups, given a rigid C*-tensor category C and a unitary half-braiding on an ind-object, we construct a *-representation of the fusion algebra of C. This allows us to present an alternative approach to recent results of Popa and Vaes, who defined C*-algebras of monoidal categories and introduced property (T) for them. As an example we analyze categories C of Hilbert bimodules over a II$_1$-factor. We show that in this case the Drinfeld center is monoidally equivalent to a category of Hilbert bimodules ov…
Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $A$ be a unital separable simple \CA with tracial rank zero. Suppose that $ϕ_1, ϕ_2: C\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. We show that there is a continuous path of unitaries $\{u_t: t\in [0, \infty)\}$ of $A$ such that $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}u_t^*ϕ_1(a)u_t=ϕ_2(a)\tforal a\in C $$ if and only if $[ϕ_1]=[ϕ_2]$ in $KK(C,A),$ $τ\circ ϕ_1=τ\circ ϕ_2$ for all $τ\in T(A)$ and the rotation map ${\tildeη}_{ϕ_1,ϕ_2}$ associated with $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ is zero. In particular, an automorphism $\af$ on a unital separable simple \CA $A$ in ${\cal N}$ with tracial rank zero…
By a quasi-representation of a group $G$ we mean an approximately multiplicative map of $G$ to the unitary group of a unital $C^*$-algebra. A quasi-representation induces a partially defined map at the level $K$-theory. In the early 90s Exel and Loring associated two invariants to almost-commuting pairs of unitary matrices $u$ and $v$: one a $K$-theoretic invariant, which may be regarded as the image of the Bott element in $K_0(C(\mathbb{T}^2))$ under a map induced by quasi-representation of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in U(n); the other is the winding number in $\mathbb{C}\setminus \{0\}$ of the closed pa…
