Results of Haagerup and Schultz (2009) about existence of invariant subspaces that decompose the Brown measure are extended to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated to a tracial von Neumann algebra. These subspaces are used to decompose an arbitrary operator in this class into the sum of a normal operator and a spectrally negligible operator. This latter result is used to prove that, on a bimodule over a tracial von Neumann algebra that is closed with respect to logarithmic submajorization, every trace is spectral, in the sense that the trace value on an operator depends only on the Brown measure of the operator.
In this paper we generalize Brown's spectral distribution measure to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated with a finite von Neumann algebra. Moreover, we compute the Brown measure of all unbounded R-diagonal operators in this class. As a particular case, we determine the Brown measure of z=xy^{-1}, where (x,y) is a circular system in the sense of Voiculescu, and we prove that for all positive integers n, z^n is in L^p(M) iff 0<p< 2/(n+1).
Affiliated and normal operators in octonion Hilbert spaces are studied. Theorems about their properties and of related algebras are demonstrated. Spectra of unbounded normal operators are investigated.
Spectral theory and functional calculus for unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space are usually treated through von Neumann's Cayley transform. Based on ideas of Woronowicz, we redevelop this theory from the point of view of multiplier algebras and the so-called bounded transform (which establishes a bijective correspondence between closed operators and pure contractions). This also leads to a simple account of the affiliation relation between von Neumann algebras and self-adjoint operators.
We show that the identity is the sum of two commutators in the algebra of all operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$, settling a question, in the negative, that had puzzled a number of us.
Consider the $\mathcal{B}$-valued probability space $(\mathcal{A}, E, \mathcal{B})$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a tracial von Neumann algebra. We extend the theory of operator valued free probability to the algebra of affiliated operators $\tilde{\mathcal{A}}$. For a random variable $X \in \tilde{\mathcal{A}}^{sa}$ we study the Cauchy transform $G_{X}$ and show that the operator algebra $(\mathcal{B} \cup \{X\})"$ can be recovered from this function. In the case where $\mathcal{B}$ is finite dimensional, we show that, when $X, Y \in \tilde{\mathcal{A}}^{sa}$ are assumed to be $\mathcal{B}$-free, t…
The theory of direct integral decompositions of both bounded and unbounded operators is further developed; in particular, results about spectral projections, functional calculus and affiliation to von Neumann algebras are proved. For operators belonging to or affiliated to a tracial von Neumann algebra that is a direct integral von Neumann algebra, the Brown measure is shown to be given by the corresponding integral of Brown measures.
Let $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $C^*$-modules over a $C^*$-algebra $\CAlg{A}$. New classes of (possibly unbounded) operators $t:E\to F$ are introduced and investigated. Instead of the density of the domain $\Def(t)$ we only assume that $t$ is essentially defined, that is, $\Def(t)^\bot=\{0\}$. Then $t$ has a well-defined adjoint. We call an essentially defined operator $t$ graph regular if its graph $\Graph(t)$ is orthogonally complemented in $E\oplus F$ and orthogonally closed if $\Graph(t)^{\bot\bot}=\Graph(t)$. A theory of these operators is developed. Various characterizations of graph regular …
The dimension of any module over an algebra of affiliated operators ${\mathcal U}$ of a finite von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal A}$ is defined using a trace on ${\mathcal A}.$ All zero-dimensional ${\mathcal U}$-modules constitute the torsion class of torsion theory $(\mathrm{\bf T},\mathrm{\bf P})$. We show that every finitely generated ${\mathcal U}$-module splits as the direct sum of torsion and torsion-free part. Moreover, we prove that the theory $(\mathrm{\bf T},\mathrm{\bf P})$ coincides with the theory of bounded and unbounded modules and also with the Lambek and Goldie torsion theories.…
It is known that the generator of a strictly continuous one parameter unitary group in the multiplier algebra of a $C^{*}$-algebra is affiliated to that $C^{*}$-algebra . We show that under natural non degeneracy conditions, this self adjoint unbounded operator lies indeed in the (unbounded) multiplier algebra of the Pedersen's ideal of the $C^{*}$-algebra.
The Kubo-Ando theory deals with connections for positive bounded operators. On the other hand, in various analysis related to von Neumann algebras it is impossible to avoid unbounded operators. In this article we try to extend a notion of connections to cover various classes of positive unbounded operators (or unbounded objects such as positive forms and weights) appearing naturally in the setting of von Neumann algebras, and we must keep all the expected properties maintained. This generalization is carried out for the following classes: (i) positive $τ$-measurable operators (affiliated with …
In noncommutative geometry one is interested in invariants such as the Fredholm index or spectral flow and their calculation using cyclic cocycles. A variety of formulae have been established under side conditions called summability constraints. These can be formulated in two ways, either for spectral triples or for bounded Fredholm modules. We study the relationship between these by proving various properties of the map on unbounded self adjoint operators $D$ given by $f(D)=D(1+D^2)^{-1/2}$. In particular we prove commutator estimates which are needed for the bounded case. In fact our methods…
Let G be a group, let U(G) denote the set of unbounded operators on L^2(G) which are affiliated to the group von Neumann algebra W(G) of G, and let D(G) denote the division closure of CG in U(G). Thus D(G) is the smallest subring of U(G) containing CG which is closed under taking inverses. If G is a free group then D(G) is a division ring, and in this case we shall give a criterion for an element of U(G) to be in D(G). This extends a result of Duchamp and Reutenauer, which was concerned with proving a conjecture of Connes.
Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integr…
We present a new and simple approach to the theory of multiple operator integrals that applies to unbounded operators affiliated with general von Neumann algebras. For semifinite von Neumann algebras we give applications to the Fréchet differentiation of operator functions that sharpen existing results, and establish the Birman-Solomyak representation of the spectral shift function of M.G. Krein in terms of an average of spectral measures in the type II setting. We also exhibit a surprising connection between the spectral shift function and spectral flow.
For a semi-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal A$, we study the case of equality in Young's inequality of s-numbers for a pair of $τ$-measurable operators $a,b$, and we prove that equality is only possible if $|a|^p=|b|^q$. We also extend the result to unbounded operators affiliated with $\mathcal A$, and relate this problem with other symmetric norm Young inequalities.
This paper is concerned with derivations in algebras of (unbounded) operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal{% A}$ be one of the algebras of measurable operators, locally measurable operators or, $τ$-measurable operators. We present a complete description of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ of type $I$ in terms of their central projections such that every derivation in $\mathcal{A}$ is inner. It is also shown that every derivation in the algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators with respect to a properly infinite von Neumann algebra $\…
We introduce a new topology, weaker than the gap topology, on the space of selfadjoint operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra. We define the real-valued spectral flow for a continuous path of selfadjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators in terms of a generalization of the winding number. We compare our definition with Phillips' analytical definition and derive integral formulas for the spectral flow for certain paths of unbounded operators with common domain, generalizing those of Carey--Phillips. Furthermore we prove the homotopy invariance of the real-valued index. As an example w…
Let $P_E$ be the set of all values of a spectral measure $E$ and $A(P_E)$ be the smallest von Neumann algebra containing $P_E$. We give a simple description of all sets of generators of $A(P_E)$ in terms of the integrals with respect to $E$. The treatment covers not only the case of generators belonging to $A(P_E)$, but also the case of (possibly unbounded) generators affiliated with this algebra.
We consider noncommutative rational functions as well as matrices in polynomials in noncommuting variables in two settings: in an algebraic context the variables are formal variables, and their rational functions generate the "free field"; in an analytic context the variables are given by operators from a finite von Neumann algebra and the question of rational functions is treated within the affiliated unbounded operators. Our main result shows that for a "good" class of operators - namely those for which the free entropy dimension is maximal - the analytic and the algebraic theory are isomorp…
We generalise the local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. In this setting it gives a formula for spectral flow along a path joining an unbounded self adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operator, affiliated to the von Neumann algebra, to a unitarily equivalent operator. Our proof is novel even in the setting of the original theorem and relies on the introduction of a function valued cocycle which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A.
The space of $L^p$ graphons, symmetric measurable functions $w: [0,1]^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ with finite $p$-norm, features heavily in the study of sparse graph limit theory. We show that the triangular cut operator $M_χ$ acting on this space is not continuous with respect to the cut norm. This is achieved by showing that as $n\to \infty$, the norm of the triangular truncation operator $\mathcal{T}_n$ on symmetric matrices equipped with the cut norm grows to infinity as well. Due to the density of symmetric matrices in the space of $L^p$ graphons, the norm growth of $\mathcal{T}_n$ generalizes to t…
