The aim of this paper is to explain how, through the work of a number of people, some algebraic structures related to groupoids have yielded algebraic descriptions of homotopy n-types. Further, these descriptions are explicit, and in some cases completely computable, in a way not possible with the traditional Postnikov systems, or with other models, such as simplicial groups.
The question was asked by Niranjan Ramachandran: how to describe the fundamental groupoid of LX, the free loop space of a space X? We give an answer by assuming X to be the classifying space of a crossed module over a group, and then describe completely a crossed module over a groupoid determining the homotopy 2-type of LX. The method requires detailed information on the monoidal closed structure on the category of crossed complexes.
Crossed modules are known to be a model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types; formally, the homotopy category of crossed modules is equivalent to the category of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. In forming the homotopy category of crossed modules, one must resort to computing derived morphisms using non-constructive topological methods, but Behrang Noohi was able to find an algebraic model of these derived morphisms called butterflies. The result is a completely algebraic model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. Reduced crossed complexes are a generalization of crossed modules and mode…
We show that a version of the cube axiom holds in cosimplicial unstable coalgebras and cosimplicial spaces equipped with a resolution model structure. As an application, classical theorems in unstable homotopy theory are extended to this context.
We address the (pointed) homotopy of crossed module morphisms in modified categories of interest; which generalizes the groups and various algebraic structures. We prove that, the homotopy relation gives rise to an equivalence relation; furthermore a groupoid structure, without any restriction on neither domain nor co-domain of the crossed module morphism. Additionally, we consider the particular cases such as associative algebras, Leibniz algebras, Lie algebras and dialgebras of crossed modules of this generalized homotopy definition. Then as the main part of the paper, we prove that the func…
Goodwillie's proof of the Blakers-Massey Theorem for $n$-cubes relies on a lemma whose proof invokes transversality. The rest of his proof follows from general facts about cubes of spaces and connectivities of maps. We present a purely homotopy-theoretic proof of this lemma. The methods are elementary, using a generalization and modification of an argument originally due to Puppe used to prove the Blakers-Massey Theorem for squares.
The classifying space of a crossed complex generalises the construction of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. We show how the theory of fibrations of crossed complexes allows the analysis of homotopy classes of maps from a free crossed complex to such a classifying space. This gives results on the homotopy classification of maps from a CW-complex to the classifying space of a crossed module and also, more generally, of a crossed complex whose homotopy groups vanish in dimensions between 1 and n. The results are analogous to those for the obstruction to an abstract kernel in group extension theory.
We address the (pointed) homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules (of groups), which are known to faithfully represent Gray 3-groupoids, with a single object, and also connected homotopy 3-types. The homotopy relation between 2-crossed module maps will be defined in a similar way to Crans' 1-transfors between strict Gray functors, however being pointed, thus this corresponds to Baues' homotopy relation between quadratic module maps. Despite the fact that this homotopy relation between 2-crossed module morphisms is not, in general, an equivalence relation, we prove that if $A$ and $A'$ are 2-crosse…
We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras. In particular, we define the concept of a 2-fold homotopy between a pair of 1-fold homotopies connecting 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$. We also prove that if the domain 2-crossed module $\A$ is free up to order one (i.e. if the bottom algebra is a polynomial algebra) then we have a 2-groupoid of 2-crossed module maps $\A \to \A'$ and their homotopies and 2-fold homotopies.
We address the homotopy theory of 2-crossed modules of commutative algebras, which are equivalent to simplicial commutative algebras with Moore complex of length two. In particular, we construct for maps of 2-crossed modules a homotopy relation, and prove that it yields an equivalence relation in very unrestricted cases (freeness up to order one of the domain 2-crossed module). This latter condition strictly includes the case when the domain is cofibrant. Furthermore, we prove that this notion of homotopy yields a groupoid with objects being the 2-crossed module maps between two fixed 2-crosse…
In this note, we construct a general form of the chromatic fracture cube, using a convenient characterization of the total homotopy fiber, and deduce a decomposition of the E(n)-local stable homotopy category.
We prove that if $M$ is a CW-complex, then the homotopy type of the skeletal filtration of $M$ does not depend on the cell decomposition of $M$ up to wedge products with $n$-disks $D^n$, when the later are given their natural CW-decomposition with unique cells of order 0, $(n-1)$ and $n$; a result resembling J.H.C. Whitehead's work on simple homotopy types. From the Colimit Theorem for the Fundamental Crossed Complex of a CW-complex (due to R. Brown and P.J. Higgins), follows an algebraic analogue for the fundamental crossed complex $Π(M)$ of the skeletal filtration of $M$, which thus depends …
We outline the main features of the definitions and applications of crossed complexes and cubical $ω$-groupoids with connections. These give forms of higher homotopy groupoids, and new views of basic algebraic topology and the cohomology of groups, with the ability to obtain some non commutative results and compute some homotopy types.
The results of a previous paper on the equivariant homotopy theory of crossed complexes are generalised from the case of a discrete group to general topological groups. The principal new ingredient necessary for this is an analysis of homotopy coherence theory for crossed complexes, using detailed results on the appropriate Eilenberg-Zilber theory from Tonks' thesis, and of its relation to simplicial homotopy coherence. Again, our results give information not just on the homotopy classification of certain equivariant maps, but also on the weak equivariant homotopy type of the corresponding equ…
Given a strong homotopy pushout cube of spaces A, we measure how far it is from also being a homotopy pullback cube. Explicitly, letting P be the homotopy colimit of the diagram obtained from A by forgetting the initial vertex $A_\varnothing$, we study the homotopy fibre of the double suspension of the comparison map $A_\varnothing \to P$. This difference is expressible in terms of the homotopy fibres of the original maps in A.
We explain how the computation of induced crossed modules allows the computation of certain homotopy 2-types and, in particular, second homotopy groups. We discuss various issues involved in computing induced crossed modules and give some examples and applications.
We show that the n-homotopy category of connected (n+1)-dimensional Menger manifolds is isomorphic to the homotopy category of connected Hilbert cube manifolds whose k-dimensional homotopy groups are trivial for each k > n.
In this paper we present the notion of smooth CW complexes given by attaching cubes on the category of diffeological spaces, and we study their smooth homotopy structures related to the homotopy extension property.
We prove that the operad B of natural operations on the Hochschild cohomology has the homotopy type of the operad of singular chains on the little disks operad. To achieve this goal, we introduce crossed interval groups and show that B is a certain crossed interval extension of an operad T whose homotopy type is known. This completes the investigation of the algebraic structure on the Hochschild cochain complex that has lasted for several decades.
We use the n-globe with its skeletal filtration to define the fundamental globular omega--groupoid of a filtered space; the proofs use an analogous fundamental cubical omega--groupoid due to the author and Philip Higgins. This method also relates the construction to the fundamental crossed complex of a filtered space, and this relation allows the proof that the crossed complex associated to the free globular omega-groupoid on one element of dimension n is the fundamental crossed complex of the n-globe.
We compare the structure of a mapping cone in the category Top^D of spaces under a space D with differentials in algebraic models like crossed complexes and quadratic complexes. Several subcategories of Top^D are identified with algebraic categories. As an application we show that there are exactly 16 essential self--maps of S^2 x S^2 fixing the diagonal.
In this study, we interpret the notion of homotopy of morphisms in the category of crossed modules in a category $\mathsf{C}$ of groups with operations using the categorical equivalence between crossed modules and internal categories in $\mathsf{C}$. Further, we characterize the derivations of crossed modules in a category $\mathsf{C}$ of groups with operations and obtain new crossed modules using regular derivations of old one.
We introduce the notion of 3-crossed module, which extends the notions of 1-crossed module (Whitehead) and 2-crossed module (Conduché). We show that the category of 3-crossed modules is equivalent to the category of simplicial groups having a Moore complex of length 3. We make explicit the relationship with the cat$^{3}$-groups (Loday) and the 3-hyper-complexes (Cegarra-Carrasco), which also model algebraically homotopy 4-types.
We determine the Postnikov Tower and Postnikov Invariants of a Crossed Complex in a purely algebraic way. Using the fact that Crossed Complexes are homotopy types for filtered spaces, we use the above "algebraically defined" Postnikov Tower and Postnikov Invariants to obtain from them those of filtered spaces. We argue that a similar "purely algebraic" approach to Postnikov Invariants may also be used in other categories of spaces.
We give formulae for a module presentation of the module of identities among relations for a presentation of a group, in terms of information on 0- and 1-combings of the Cayley graph. This is seen as a special case of extending a partial free crossed resolution of a group given a partial contracting homotopy of its universal cover.
We utilise the theory of crossed simplicial groups to introduce a collection of local Quillen model structures on the category of simplicial presheaves with a compact planar Lie group action on a small Grothendieck site. As an application, we give a characterisation of equivariant cohomology theories on a site as derived mapping spaces in these model categories.
We apply the idea of a topological quantum field theory (TQFT) to maps from manifolds into topological spaces. This leads to a notion of a (d+1)-dimensional homotopy quantum field theory (HQFT) which may be described as a TQFT for closed d-dimensional manifolds and (d+1)-dimensional cobordisms endowed with homotopy classes of maps into a given space. For a group $π$, we introduce cohomological HQFT's with target $K(π,1)$ derived from cohomology classes of $π$ and its subgroups of finite index. The main body of the paper is concerned with (1+1)-dimensional HQFT's. We classify them in terms of s…
In this paper, we formalize the sense in which higher homotopy groups are "infinitely commutative." In particular, we both simplify and extend the highly technical procedure, due to Eda and Kawamura, for constructing homotopies that isotopically rearrange infinite configurations of disjoint $n$-cubes within the unit $n$-cube.
Let $\ell$ be a commutative ring with unit. To every pair of $\ell$-algebras $A$ and $B$ one can associate a simplicial set $\hom(A,B^Δ)$ so that $π_0\hom(A,B^Δ)$ equals the set of polynomial homotopy classes of morphisms from $A$ to $B$. We prove that $π_n\hom(A,B^Δ)$ is the set of homotopy classes of morphisms from $A$ to $B^{S_n}$, where $B^{S_n}$ is the ind-algebra of polynomials on the $n$-dimensional cube with coefficients in $B$ vanishing at the boundary of the cube. This is a generalization to arbitrary dimensions of a theorem of Cortiñas-Thom, which addresses the cases $n\leq 1$. As a…
We show that the symmetric track group, which is an extension of the symmetric group associated to the second Stiefel- Withney class, acts as a crossed module on the secondary homotopy group of a pointed space. An application is given to cup-one products in unstable homotopy groups of spheres, generalizing a formula of Barratt-Jones-Mahowald.
Part of the title of this article is taken from writings of Einstein, which argue that we need to exercise our ability to analyse familiar concepts, to demonstrate the conditions on which their justification and usefulness depend, and the way in which these developed, little by little $\ldots$. My aim is to do this for the initial negative reactions to the seminar by E. Cech on higher homotopy groups to the ICM meeting in Z\" urich in 1932; then the subsequent work of Hurewicz, the use of groupoids and so the use of many base points, and how J.H.C. Whitehead's use of free crossed modules gave …
We construct a smash product operation on secondary homotopy groups yielding the structure of a lax symmetric monoidal functor. Applications on cup-one products, Toda brackets and Whitehead products are considered. In particular we prove a formula for the crossed effect of the cup-one product operation on unstable homotopy groups of spheres which was claimed by Barratt-Jones-Mahowald.
Let p be a fibration over a finite simplicial complex, whose fibers have the homotopy type of finite simplicial complexes. Then p is equivalent to an approximate fibration whose total space is a compact ENR. The proof uses homotopy coherent diagrams and their homotopy colimits. We also comment on the simple homotopy type of the total space and give an application to the fibering of Hilbert cube manifolds.
With a view toward studying the homotopy type of spaces of Boolean formulae, we introduce a simplicial complex, called the theta complex, associated to any hypergraph, which is the Alexander dual of the more well-known independence complex. In particular, the set of satisfiable formulae in k-conjunctive normal form with less than or equal to n variables has the homotopy type of Theta(Cube(n,n-k)), where Cube(n,n-k) is a hypergraph associated to the (n-k)-skeleton of an n-cube. We make partial progress in calculating the homotopy type of theta for these cubical hypergraphs, and we also give cal…
The homotopy theory of higher categorical structures has become a relevant part of the machinery of algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, and this paper contains contributions to the study of the relationship between Bénabou's bicategories and the homotopy types of their classifying spaces. Mainly, we state and prove an extension of Quillen's Theorem B by showing, under reasonable necessary conditions, a bicategory-theoretical interpretation of the homotopy-fibre product of the continuous maps induced on classifying spaces by a diagram of bicategories $\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{B}\leftarrow …
Triangulations and higher triangulations axiomatize the calculus of derived cokernels when applied to strings of composable morphisms. While there are no cubical versions of (higher) triangulations, in this paper we use coherent diagrams to develop some aspects of a rich cubical calculus. Applied to the models in the background, this enhances the typical examples of triangulated and tensor-triangulated categories. The main players are the cardinality filtration of n-cubes, the induced interpolation between cocartesian and strongly cocartesian n-cubes, and the yoga of iterated cone construction…
In this note we present a combinatorial link invariant that underlies some recent stable homotopy refinements of Khovanov homology of links. The invariant takes the form of a functor between two combinatorial 2-categories, modulo a notion of stable equivalence. We also develop some general properties of such functors.
For a discrete group G, we represent the Bredon cohomology with local coefficients as the homotopy classes of maps in the category of equivaraint crossed complexes. Subsequently, we construct a naive parametrized G-spectrum, such that the cohomology theory defined by it reduces to the Bredon cohomology with local coefficients when restricted to suspension spectra.
We complete the details of a theory outlined by Kontsevich and Soibelman that associates to a semi-algebraic set a certain graded commutative differential algebra of "semi-algebraic differential forms" in a functorial way. This algebra encodes the real homotopy type of the semi-algebraic set in the spirit of the DeRham algebra of differential forms on a smooth manifold. Its development is needed for Kontsevich's proof of the formality of the little cubes operad.
This paper gives a partial description of the homotopy type of K, the space of long knots in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. The primary result is the construction of a homotopy equivalence between K and the free little 2-cubes object over the space of prime knots. In proving the freeness result, a close correspondence is discovered between the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition of knot complements and the little cubes action on K. Beyond studying long knots in 3-space, we show that for any compact manifold M the space of embeddings of R^n x M in R^n x M with support in I^n x M admits an actio…
Higher Homotopy van Kampen Theorems allow the computation as colimits of certain homotopical invariants of glued spaces. One corollary is to describe homotopical excision in critical dimensions in terms of induced modules and crossed modules over groupoids. This paper shows how fibred and cofibred categories give an overall context for discussing and computing such constructions, allowing one result to cover many cases. A useful general result is that the inclusion of a fibre of a fibred category preserves connected colimits. The main homotopical application are to pairs of spaces with several…
The aim here is to sketch the development of ideas related to brackets and similar concepts: Some purely group theoretical combinatorics due to Ph. Hall led to a proof of the Jacobi identity for the Whitehead product in homotopy theory. Whitehead introduced crossed modules to characterize a second relative homotopy group; guided by combinatorial group theory considerations, Reidemeister and Peiffer explored this kind of structure to develop normal forms for the decomposition of a 3-manifold; but crossed modules are also lurking behind a forgotten approach of Turing to the extension problem for…
The aim of this article is to explain a philosophy for applying higher dimensional Seifert-van Kampen Theorems, and how the use of groupoids and strict higher groupoids resolves some foundational anomalies in algebraic topology at the border between homology and homotopy. We explain some applications to filtered spaces, and special cases of them, while a sequel will show the relevance to n-cubes of pointed spaces.
We show that the cube of the Hopf map $η$ maps to zero under the Hurewicz map for all fixed points of all norms to cyclic $2$-groups of the Landweber-Araki Real bordism spectrum. Using that the slice spectral sequence is a spectral sequence of Mackey functors, we compute the relevant portion of the homotopy groups of these fixed points, showing that multiplication by $4$ annihilates $π_{3}$.
Hyperoctahedral homology is the homology theory associated to the hyperoctahedral crossed simplicial group. It is defined for involutive algebras over a commutative ring using functor homology and the hyperoctahedral bar construction of Fiedorowicz. The main result of the paper proves that hyperoctahedral homology is related to equivariant stable homotopy theory: for a discrete group of odd order, the hyperoctahedral homology of the group algebra is isomorphic to the homology of the fixed points under the involution of an equivariant infinite loop space built from the classifying space of the …
Inspired by recent work of Batanin and Berger on the homotopy theory of operads, a general monad-theoretic context for speaking about structures within structures is presented, and the problem of constructing the universal ambient structure containing the prescribed internal structure is studied. Following the work of Lack, these universal objects must be constructed from simplicial objects arising from our monad-theoretic framework, as certain 2-categorical colimits called codescent objects. We isolate the extra structure present on these simplicial objects which enable their codescent object…
If A is a homotopy cartesian square of ring spectra satisfying connectivity hypotheses, then the cube induced by Goodwillie's integral cyclotomic trace from K(A) to TC(A) is homotopy cartesian. In other words, the homotopy fiber of the cyclotomic trace satisfies excision. The method of proof gives as a spin-off new proofs of some old results, as well as some new results, about periodic cyclic homology, and - more relevantly for our current application - the T-Tate spectrum of topological Hochschild homology, where T is the circle group
We give an algebraic proof for the result of Eilenberg and Mac Lane that the second cohomology group of a simplicial group G can be computed as a quotient of a fibre product involving the first two homotopy groups and the first Postnikov invariant of G. Our main tool is the theory of crossed module extensions of groups.
We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete and pro-$p$ presentations of discrete and pro-$p$ groups and show that aspherical presentations and their subpresentations are quasirational. In the pro-$p$-case quasirationality of pro-$p$-groups with a single defining relation holds. For every quasirational (pro-$p$)relation module we construct the so called $p$-adic rationalization, which is a pro-fd-module $\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p= \varprojlim R/[R,R\mathcal{M}_n]\otimes\mathbb{Q}_p$. We provide the isomorphisms $\overline{R^{\wedge}_w}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=…
