A stable model category is a setting for homotopy theory where the suspension functor is invertible. The prototypical examples are the category of spectra in the sense of stable homotopy theory and the category of unbounded chain complexes of modules over a ring. In this paper we develop methods for deciding when two stable model categories represent `the same homotopy theory'. We show that stable model categories with a single compact generator are equivalent to modules over a ring spectrum. More generally stable model categories with a set of generators are characterized as modules over a `ring spectrum with several objects', i.e., as spectrum valued diagram categories. We also prove a Morita theorem which shows how equivalences between module categories over ring spectra can be realized by smashing with a pair of bimodules. Finally, we characterize stable model categories which represent the derived category of a ring. This is a slight generalization of Rickard's work on derived equivalent rings. We also include a proof of the model category equivalence of modules over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HR and (unbounded) chain complexes of R-modules for a ring R.
In this paper, we construct incomplete versions of the equivariant stable category; i.e., equivariant stabilization of the category of $G$-spaces with respect to incomplete systems of transfers encoded by an $N_\infty$ operad $\mathcal{O}$. These categories are built from the categories of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $G$-spaces. Using this operadic formulation, we establish incomplete versions of the usual structural properties of the equivariant stable category, notably the tom Dieck splitting. Our work is motivated in part by the examples arising from the equivariant units and Picard space fun…
We survey various approaches to axiomatic stable homotopy theory, with examples including derived categories, categories of (possibly equivariant or localized) spectra, and stable categories of modular representations of finite groups. We focus mainly on representability theorems, localisation, Bousfield classes, and nilpotence.
We prove two results from Morita theory of stable model categories. Both can be regarded as topological versions of recent algebraic theorems. One is on recollements of triangulated categories, which have been studied in the algebraic case by Jørgensen. We give a criterion which answers the following question: When is there a recollement for the derived category of a given symmetric ring spectrum in terms of two other symmetric ring spectra? The other result is on well generated triangulated categories in the sense of Neeman. Porta characterizes the algebraic well generated categories as local…
We develop a mechanism of "isotropy separation for compact objects" that explicitly describes an invertible $G$-spectrum through its collection of geometric fixed points and gluing data located in certain variants of the stable module category. As an application, we carry out a complete analysis of invertible G-spectra in the case $G=A_5$. A further application is given by showing that the Picard groups of $\mathrm{Sp}^G$ and a category of derived Mackey functors agree.
This is a survey paper, based on lectures given at the Workshop on "Structured ring spectra and their applications" which took place January 21-25, 2002, at the University of Glasgow. The term `Morita theory' is usually used for results concerning equivalences of various kinds of module categories. We focus on the covariant form of Morita theory, so the basic question is: When do two `rings' have `equivalent' module categories ? We discuss this question in different contexts and illustrate it by examples: (Classical) When are the module categories of two rings equivalent as categories ? (Deriv…
An E_1 (or A-infinity) ring spectrum R has a derived category of modules D_R. An E_2 structure on R endows D_R with a monoidal product. An E_3 structure on R endows the monoidal product with a braiding. If the E_3 structure extends to an E_4 structure then the braided monoidal product is symmetric monoidal.
We describe a comparison between pretriangulated differential graded categories and certain stable infinity categories. Specifically, we use a model category structure on differential graded categories over k (a field of characteristic 0) where the weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences, and where the fibrant objects are in particular pretriangulated differential graded categories. We show the underlying infinity category of this model category is equivalent to the infinity category of k-linear stable infinity categories.
We investigate the particular properties of the stable category of modules over a finite dimensional cocommutative graded connected Hopf algebra $A$, via tensor-triangulated geometry. This study requires some mild conditions on the Hopf algebra $A$ under consideration (satisfied for example by all finite sub-Hopf-algebras of the modulo $2$ Steenrod algebra). In particular, we study some particular covers of its spectrum of prime ideals $\mathrm{Spc}(A)$, which are related to Margolis' Work. We then exploit the existence of Margolis' Postnikov towers in this situation to show that the localizat…
We study thick ideals in the stable motivic homotopy category SH(k) and in its subcategories of compact and of finite cellular objects. If k is a subfield of the complex or even the real numbers, then using comparison functors we find thick ideals corresponding to thick ideals in classical or Z/2-equivariant stable homotopy theory, respectively. We also study motivic Morava K-theories AK(n), for which we prove the motivic analogue of the decomposition of the Bousfield class of E(n) into Bousfield classes of K(i)'s over the complex numbers if p>2. In that case we also prove that AK(n)-acyclicit…
One of the most useful methods for studying the stable homotopy category is localising at some spectrum E. For an arbitrary stable model category we introduce a candidate for the E-localisation of this model category. We study the properties of this new construction and relate it to some well-known categories.
We develop a stable analogue to the theory of cosimplicial frames in model cagegories; this is used to enrich all homotopy categories of stable model categories over the usual stable homotopy category and to give a different description of the smash product of spectra which is compared with the known descriptions; in particular, the original smash product of Boardman is identified with the newer smash products coming from a symmetric monoidal model of the stable homotopy category.
We show how matrix problems (bimodule categories) can be used in studying triangulated categories. Then we apply the general technique to the classification of stable homotopy types of polyhedra, find out the "representation types" of such problems and give a description of stable homotopy types in finite and tame cases.
If C is a stable model category with a monoidal product then the set of homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit S forms a commutative ring. An idempotent e of this ring will split the homotopy category. We prove that provided the localised model structures exist, this splitting of the homotopy category comes from a splitting of the model category, that is, C is Quillen equivalent to the product of C localised at the object eS and C localised at the object (1-e)S. This Quillen equivalence is strong monoidal and is symmetric when the monoidal product of C is.
We introduce a notion of fine Tannakian infinity-categories and prove Tannakian characterization results for symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories over a field of characteristic zero. It connects derived quotient stacks with symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories which satisfy a certain simple axiom. We also discuss several applications to examples.
This paper is an expository account of the theory of stable infinity categories. We prove that the homotopy category of a stable infinity category is triangulated, and that the collection of stable infinity categories is closed under a variety of constructions. We also explain how to construct the derived category of an abelian category (with enough projective objects) as the homotopy category of a suitable stable infinity category; moreover, we characterize this stable infinity category by a universal mapping property.
Following Krause \cite{Kr}, we prove Krull-Schmidt type decomposition theorems for thick subcategories of various triangulated categories including the derived categories of rings, Noetherian stable homotopy categories, stable module categories over Hopf algebras, and the stable homotopy category of spectra. In all these categories, it is shown that the thick ideals of small objects decompose uniquely into indecomposable thick ideals. We also discuss some consequences of these decomposition results. In particular, it is shown that all these decompositions respect K-theory.
We construct Quillen equivalences between the model categories of monoids (rings), modules and algebras over two Quillen equivalent model categories under certain conditions. This is a continuation of our earlier work where we established model categories of monoids, modules and algebras [Algebras and modules in monoidal model categories, Proc. London Math. Soc. 80 (2000), 491-511]. As an application we extend the Dold-Kan equivalence to show that the model categories of simplicial rings, modules and algebras are Quillen equivalent to the associated model categories of connected differential g…
This paper corrects a small mistake in a paper of Dwyer-Kan, and uses this to identify homotopy function complexes in a model category with the nerves of certain categories of zig-zags.
We give a complete classification of pointed fusion categories over $\mathbb{C}$ of global dimension $p^3$ for $p$ any odd prime. We proceed to classify the equivalence classes of pointed fusion categories of dimension $p^3$ and we determine which of these equivalence classes have equivalent categories of modules.
Tate objects have been studied by many authors. They allow us to deal with infinite dimensional spaces by identifying some more structure. In this article, we set up the theory of Tate objects in stable $(\infty,1)$-categories, while the literature only treats with exact categories. We will prove the main properties expected from Tate objects. This new setting includes several useful examples: Tate objects in the category of spectra for instance, or in the derived category of a derived algebraic object -- which can be thought as structured infinite dimensional vector bundle in derived setting.
In this paper we give a complete classification of pointed fusion categories over $\mathbb{C}$ of global dimension 8. We first classify the equivalence classes of pointed fusion categories of dimension 8, and then we proceed to determine which of these equivalence classes have equivalent categories of modules. This classificaction permits to classify the equivalence classes of braded tensor equivalences of twisted Drinfeld doubles of finite groups of order 8.
For an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ we investigate when the stable categories $\underline{\mathrm{GPro}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ and $\underline{\mathrm{GIn}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ are triangulated equivalent. To this end, we realize these stable categories as homotopy categories of certain (non-trivial) model categories and give conditions on $\mathcal{A}$ that ensure the existence of a Quillen equivalence between the model categories in question. We also study when such a Quillen equivalence transfers from $\mathcal{A}$ to categories naturally associated to $\mathcal{A}$, such as $\mathr…
We prove a version of J.P. May's theorem on the additivity of traces, in symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-categories. Our proof proceeds via a categorification, namely we use the additivity of topological Hochschild homology as an invariant of stable $\infty$-categories and construct a morphism of spectra $\mathrm{THH}(\mathbf C)\to \mathrm{End}(\mathbf 1_\mathbf C)$ for $\mathbf C$ a stably symmetric monoidal rigid $\infty$-category. We also explain how to get a more general statement involving traces of finite (homotopy) colimits.
We describe the formal properties of cellularization functors in triangulated categories and study the preservation of ring and module structures under these functors in stable homotopy categories in the sense of Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland, such as the homotopy category of spectra or the derived category of a commutative ring. We prove that cellularization functors preserve modules over connective rings but they do not preserve rings in general (even if the ring is connective or the cellularization functor is triangulated). As an application of these results, we describe the cellularizatio…
We exhibit a bridge between the theory of cellular categories, used in algebraic topology and homological algebra, and the model-theoretic notion of stable independence. Roughly speaking, we show that the combinatorial cellular categories (those where, in a precise sense, the cellular morphisms are generated by a set) are exactly those that give rise to stable independence notions. We give two applications: on the one hand, we show that the abstract elementary classes of roots of Ext studied by Baldwin-Eklof-Trlifaj are stable and tame. On the other hand, we give a simpler proof (in a special …
We prove that every stable, combinatorial model category has a natural enrichment by symmetric spectra (or more precisely, a natural equivalence class of enrichments). This in some sense generalizes the simplicial enrichments of model categories provided by the Dwyer-Kan hammock localization. As one particular application, we are able to associate to every object of a stable, combinatorial model category a "homotopy endomorphism ring spectrum". The homotopy types of these ring spectra are preserved by Quillen equivalences, and so are an invariant for stable model categories.
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
We provide a fairly self-contained account of the localisation and cofinality theorems for the algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories. It is based on a general formula for the evaluation of an additive functor on a Verdier quotient closely following work of Waldhausen. We also include a new proof of the additivity theorem of $\mathrm{K}$-theory, strongly inspired by Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction, a short proof of the universality theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and demonstrate that the cofinality theorem can be derived from the universal property alone.
We study the triangulated subcategories of compact objects in stable homotopy categories such as the homotopy category of spectra, the derived categories of rings, and the stable module categories of Hopf algebras. In the first part of this thesis we use a K-theory recipe of Thomason to classify these subcategories. This recipe when applied to the category of finite p-local spectra gives a refinement of the ``chromatic tower''. This refinement has some interesting consequences. In particular, it gives new evidence to a conjecture of Frank Adams that the thick subcategory C_2 can be generated b…
We introduce the notion of a bounded weight structure on a stable $\infty$-category and use this to prove the natural generalization of Waldhausen's sphere theorem: We show that the algebraic $K$-theory of a stable $\infty$-category with a bounded non-degenerate weight structure is equivalent to the algebraic $K$-theory of the heart of the weight structure.
We prove that, in a triangulated category with combinatorial models, every localizing subcategory is coreflective and every colocalizing subcategory is reflective if a certain large-cardinal axiom (Vopenka's principle) is assumed true. It follows that, under the same assumptions, orthogonality sets up a bijective correspondence between localizing subcategories and colocalizing subcategories. The existence of such a bijection was left as an open problem by Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland in their axiomatic study of stable homotopy categories and also by Neeman in the context of well-generated tr…
We extend some classical results of Bousfield on homology localizations and nilpotent completions to a presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathscr{M}$ admitting a multiplicative left-complete $t$-structure. If $E$ is a homotopy commutative algebra in $\mathscr{M}$ we show that $E$-nilpotent completion, $E$-localization, and a suitable formal completion agree on bounded below objects when $E$ satisfies some reasonable conditions.
We describe the class of semi-stable model categories, which generalize the equivalence of finite products and coproducts in abelian and stable model categories, and use this to establish Morita equivalences among categories of functors. We provide a construction of pairs of small categories--known as conjugate pairs--whose associated categories of diagrams are Quillen equivalent in the semi-stable setting. We frame our development in the context of Morita theory, following Slominska's work on similar questions for categories of functors enriched over and taking values in R-modules.
A pointed fusion category is a rigid tensor category with finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects which moreover are invertible. Two tensor categories $C$ and $D$ are weakly Morita equivalent if there exists an indecomposable right module category $M$ over $C$ such that $Fun_C(M,M)$ and $D$ are tensor equivalent. We use the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence associated to abelian group extensions to give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of cohomology classes for two pointed fusion categories to be weakly Morita equivalent. This result may permit to classify the e…
This paper concerns spherical adjunctions of stable $\infty$-categories and their relation to monadic adjunctions. We begin with a proof of the 2/4 property of spherical adjunctions in the setting of stable $\infty$-categories. The proof is based on the description of spherical adjunctions as 4-periodic semiorthogonal decompositions given by Halpern-Leistner, Shipman and by Dyckerhoff, Kapranov, Schechtman, Soibelman. We then describe a class of examples of spherical adjunctions arising from local systems on spheres. The main result of this paper is a characterization of the sphericalness of a…
We study the problem of when triangulated categories admit unique infinity-categorical enhancements. Our results use Lurie's theory of prestable infinity-categories to give conceptual proofs of, and in many cases strengthen, previous work on the subject by Lunts--Orlov and Canonaco--Stellari. We also give a wide range of examples involving quasi-coherent sheaves, categories of almost modules, and local cohomology to illustrate the theory of prestable infinity-categories. Finally, we propose a theory of stable $n$-categories which would interpolate between triangulated categories and stable inf…
In our paper "On D-module of categories I", we provide two different methods of constructing D-module structures on the complex computing periodic cyclic homology associated to a family of stable infinity categories. One is based on a canonical extension of factorization homology. Another method uses the pair of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology, Kodaira-Spencer map for a family of stable infinity categories, Koszul dualities, and the relation between dg Lie algebras and pointed formal stacks. In this paper, we prove that two resulting structures coindice.
In this paper, we show how certain ``stability phenomena'' in unpointed model categories provide the sets of homotopy classes with the structure of abelian heaps, i.e. abelian groups without a choice of a zero. In contrast with the classical situation of stable (pointed) model categories, these sets can be empty.
The present work re-enacts the classical theory of t-structures reducing the classical definition given in *Faisceaux Pervers* to a rather primitive categorical gadget: suitable reflective factorization systems. This translation is only possible due to the virtues of the infinity-categorical setting. Once the basic theory of t-structure has been developed, a natural direction of research is to develop a comprehensive treatment of t-structure in the "torsio-centric" perspective: we apply the technology of factorization systems to the theory of Postnikov towers, to the proof of the abelianity of…
The point of this paper is to prove the conjecture that virtual 2-vector bundles are classified by K(ku), the algebraic K-theory of topological K-theory. Hence, by the work of Ausoni and the fourth author, virtual 2-vector bundles give us a geometric cohomology theory of the same telescopic complexity as elliptic cohomology. The main technical step is showing that for well-behaved small rig categories R (also known as bimonoidal categories) the algebraic K-theory space, K(HR), of the ring spectrum HR associated to R is equivalent to Z \times |BGL(R)|^+, where GL(R) is the monoidal category of …
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of exponential characteristic $p$. Given any prime $\ell\neq p$, we construct a stable étale realization functor $$\underline{\text{Ét}}_{\ell}:\text{Spt}(k)\rightarrow \text{Pro}(\text{Spt})^{H\mathbb{Z}/\ell}$$ from the stable $\infty$-category of motivic $\mathbb{P}^1$-spectra over $k$ to the stable $\infty$-category of $(H\mathbb{Z}/\ell)^*$-local pro-spectra (see section 3 for definition). This is induced by the étale topological realization functor á la Friedlander. The constant presheaf functor naturally induces the functor \[\text{SH}[1/p]\right…
The noncommutative stable homotopy category $\mathtt{NSH}$ is a triangulated category that is the universal receptacle for triangulated homology theories on separable $C^*$-algebras. We show that the triangulated category $\mathtt{NSH}$ is topological as defined by Schwede using the formalism of (stable) infinity categories. More precisely, we construct a stable presentable infinity category of noncommutative spectra and show that $\mathtt{NSH}^{op}$ sits inside its homotopy category as a full triangulated subcategory, from which the above result can be deduced. We also introduce a presentable…
We exhibit examples of triangulated categories which are neither the stable category of a Frobenius category nor a full triangulated subcategory of the homotopy category of a stable model category. Even more drastically, our examples do not admit any non-trivial exact functors to or from these algebraic respectively topological triangulated categories.
We do three things in this paper: (1) study the analog of localization sequences (in the sense of algebraic $K$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories) for additive $\infty$-categories, (2) define the notion of nilpotent extensions for suitable $\infty$-categories and furnish interesting examples such as categorical square-zero extensions, and (3) use (1) and (2) to extend the Dundas-Goodwillie-McCarthy theorem for stable $\infty$-categories which are not monogenically generated (such as the stable $\infty$-category of Voevodsky's motives or the stable $\infty$-category of perfect complexes on s…
Picard 2-categories are symmetric monoidal 2-categories with invertible 0-, 1-, and 2-cells. The classifying space of a Picard 2-category $\mathcal{D}$ is an infinite loop space, the zeroth space of the $K$-theory spectrum $K\mathcal{D}$. This spectrum has stable homotopy groups concentrated in levels 0, 1, and 2. In this paper, we describe part of the Postnikov data of $K\mathcal{D}$ in terms of categorical structure. We use this to show that there is no strict skeletal Picard 2-category whose $K$-theory realizes the 2-truncation of the sphere spectrum. As part of the proof, we construct a ca…
The classical Dold-Kan correspondence is known to admit a categorification in the form of an equivalence between the $\infty$-categories of $2$-simplicial stable $\infty$-categories and connective chain complexes of stable $\infty$-categories. In this work, we extend these concepts to give a categorification of the classical Dwyer-Kan correspondence by showing that the $\infty$-category of $2$-duplicial stable $\infty$-categories is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of conective chain complexes with right adjoints.
Given an abelian $p$-group $G$ of rank $n$, we construct an action of the torus $\mathbb{T}^n$ on the stable module $\infty$-category of $G$-representations over a field of characteristic $p$. The homotopy fixed points are given by the $\infty$-category of module spectra over the Tate construction of the torus. The relationship thus obtained arises from a Galois extension in the sense of Rognes, with Galois group given by the torus. As one application, we give a homotopy-theoretic proof of Dade's classification of endotrivial modules for abelian $p$-groups. As another application, we give a sl…
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
Let $ A $ be a finite connected graded cocommutative Hopf algebra over a field $ k $. There is an endofunctor $ \mathsf{tw} $ on the stable module category $ \mathrm{StMod}_A $ of $ A $ which twists the grading by $ 1 $. We show the categorical entropy of $ \mathsf{tw} $ is zero. We provide a lower bound for the categorical polynomial entropy of $ \mathsf{tw} $ in terms of the Krull dimension of the cohomology of $ A $, and an upper bound in terms of the existence of finite resolutions of $ A $-modules of a particular form. We employ these tools to compute the categorical polynomial entropy of…
We construct a left adjoint $\mathcal{H}^\text{st}\colon \mathbf{Ex}_{\infty} \rightarrow \mathbf{St}_{\infty}$ to the inclusion $\mathbf{St}_{\infty} \hookrightarrow \mathbf{Ex}_{\infty}$ of the $\infty$-category of stable $\infty$-categories into the $\infty$-category of exact $\infty$-categories, which we call the stable hull. For every exact $\infty$-category $\mathcal{E}$, the unit functor $\mathcal{E} \rightarrow \mathcal{H}^\text{st}(\mathcal{E})$ is fully faithful and preserves and reflects exact sequences. This provides an $\infty$-categorical variant of the Gabriel-Quillen embedding …
