We prove that every stable, combinatorial model category has a natural enrichment by symmetric spectra (or more precisely, a natural equivalence class of enrichments). This in some sense generalizes the simplicial enrichments of model categories provided by the Dwyer-Kan hammock localization. As one particular application, we are able to associate to every object of a stable, combinatorial model category a "homotopy endomorphism ring spectrum". The homotopy types of these ring spectra are preserved by Quillen equivalences, and so are an invariant for stable model categories.
We introduce a new type of weakly enriched categories over a given symmetric monoidal model category M; these are called Co-Segal categories. Their definition derives from the philosophy of classical (enriched) Segal categories. We study their homotopy theory by giving a model structure on them. One of the motivations of introducing these structure was to have an alternative definition of higher linear categories following Segal-like methods.
We prove that given $\mathcal{C}$ a presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category, and any essentially small $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$, the $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $\mathcal{C}$ is enriched, tensored and cotensored over the presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{O}$-coalgebras in $\mathcal{C}$. We provide a higher categorical analogue of the universal measuring coalgebra. For categories in the usual sense, the result was proved by Hyland, López Franco, and Vasilakopoulou.
The 2-category V-Cat of categories enriched over a braided monoidal category V is not itself braided in any way that is based upon the braiding of V. The exception is the case in which V is symmetric, which leads to V-Cat being symmetric as well. This paper describes how these facts are related to a categorical analogue of topological delooping. It seems that the analogy of loop spaces is a good guide for how to define the concept of enrichment over various types of monoidal objects, including k-fold monoidal categories and their higher dimensional counterparts. The main result is that for V a…
Lyubashenko has described enriched 2-categories as categories enriched over V-Cat, the 2-category of categories enriched over a symmetric monoidal V. I have generalized this to the k-fold monoidal V. The symmetric case can easily be recovered. The introduction of this paper proposes a recursive definition of V-n-categories and their morphisms. Then I consider the special case of V-2-categories and give the details of the proof that with their morphisms these form the structure of a 3-category.
We define the notion of an additive model category, and we prove that any additive, stable, combinatorial model category has a natural enrichment over symmetric spectra based on simplicial abelian groups. As a consequence, every object in such a model category has a naturally associated endomorphism ring inside this spectra category. We establish the basic properties of this enrichment. We also develop some enriched model category theory. In particular, we have a notion of an adjoint pair of functors being a 'module' over another such pair. Such things are called "adjoint modules". We develop …
Joyal and Street note in their paper on braided monoidal categories [Braided tensor categories, Advances in Math. 102(1993) 20-78] that the 2-category V-Cat of categories enriched over a braided monoidal category V is not itself braided in any way that is based upon the braiding of V. The exception that they mention is the case in which V is symmetric, which leads to V-Cat being symmetric as well. The symmetry in V-Cat is based upon the symmetry of V. The motivation behind this paper is in part to describe how these facts relating V and V-Cat are in turn related to a categorical analogue of to…
We propose a recursive definition of V-n-categories and their morphisms. We show that for V k-fold monoidal the structure of a (k-n)-fold monoidal strict (n+1)-category is possessed by V-n-Cat. This article is a completion of the work begun in math.CT/0306086, and the initial sections duplicate the beginning of that paper.
We develop a theory of infinity properads enriched in a general symmetric monoidal infinity category. These are defined as presheaves, satisfying a Segal condition and a Rezk completeness condition, over certain categories of graphs. In particular, we introduce a new category of level graphs which also allow us to give a framework for algebras over an enriched infinity properad. We show that one can vary the category of graphs without changing the underlying theory. We also show that infinity properads cannot always be rectified, indicating that a conjecture of the second author and Robertson …
We explain how to set up the homotopy spectral sequence of a (co)simplicial object in an $\infty$-category, with an emphasis on how to construct the differentials in a model-invariant manner.
We construct a model structure on the category $\mathrm{DblCat}$ of double categories and double functors. Unlike previous model structures for double categories, it recovers the homotopy theory of 2-categories through the horizontal embedding $\mathbb{H}\colon2\mathrm{Cat}\to\mathrm{DblCat}$, which is both left and right Quillen, and homotopically fully faithful. Furthermore, we show that Lack's model structure on $2\mathrm{Cat}$ is both left- and right-induced along $\mathbb{H}$ from our model structure on $\mathrm{DblCat}$. In addition, we obtain a $2\mathrm{Cat}$-enrichment of our model st…
In this article we develop the cotangent complex and (co)homology theories for spectral categories. Along the way, we reproduce standard model structures on spectral categories. As applications, we show that the invariants to descend to stable $\infty$-categories and we prove a stabilization result for spectral categories.
We set up a general theory of weak or homotopy-coherent enrichment in an arbitrary monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{V}$. Our theory of enriched $\infty$-categories has many desirable properties; for instance, if the enriching $\infty$-category $\mathcal{V}$ is presentably symmetric monoidal then $\mathrm{Cat}^\mathcal{V}_\infty$ is as well. These features render the theory useful even when an $\infty$-category of enriched $\infty$-categories comes from a model category (as is often the case in examples of interest, e.g. dg-categories, spectral categories, and $(\infty,n)$-categories). This…
We describe two types of localization for $(\infty, 1)$-categories which determine the successive terms in the homotopy spectral sequence of a (co)simplicial object.
We construct spectral sequences in the framework of Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology for functors between small categories and analyze particular cases including Grothendieck fibrations. We also give applications to more classical cohomology and homology theories including Hochschild-Mitchell cohomology and those studied before by Watts, Roos, Quillen and others.
Classical homological algebra considers chain complexes, resolutions, and derived functors in additive categories. We describe "track algebras in dimension n", which generalize additive categories, and we define higher order chain complexes, resolutions, and derived functors. We show that higher order resolutions exist in higher track categories, and that they determine higher order Ext-groups. In particular, the E_m-term of the Adams spectral sequence (m<n+3) is a higher order Ext-group, which is determined by the track algebra of higher cohomology operations.
In homotopy theory, exact sequences and spectral sequences consist of groups and pointed sets, linked by actions. We prove that the theory of such exact and spectral sequences can be established in a categorical setting which is based on the existence of kernels and cokernels with respect to an assigned ideal of null morphisms, a generalisation of abelian categories and Puppe-exact categories.
We construct a Quillen model structure on the category of spectral categories, where the weak equivalences are the symmetric spectra analogue of the notion of equivalence of categories.
The Adams spectral sequence is available in any triangulated category equipped with a projective or injective class. Higher Toda brackets can also be defined in a triangulated category, as observed by B. Shipley based on J. Cohen's approach for spectra. We provide a family of definitions of higher Toda brackets, show that they are equivalent to Shipley's, and show that they are self-dual. Our main result is that the Adams differential $d_r$ in any Adams spectral sequence can be expressed as an $(r+1)$-fold Toda bracket and as an $r^{\text{th}}$ order cohomology operation. We also show how the …
Classical homological algebra takes place in additive categories. In homotopy theory such additive categories arise as homotopy categories of ``additive groupoid enriched categories'', in which a secondary analog of homological algebra can be performed. We introduce secondary chain complexes and secondary resolutions leading to the concept of secondary derived functors. As a main result we show that the E_3-term of the Adams spectral sequence can be expressed as a secondary derived functor. This result can be used to compute the E_3-term explicitly by an algorithm.
In this paper we explain certain systematic differences between algebraic and topological triangulated categories. A triangulated category is algebraic if it admits a differential graded model, and topological if it admits a model in the form of a stable cofibration category. The precise statements use the 'n-order' of a triangulated category, for a natural number n. The n-order is a non-negative integer (or infinity) and measures `how strongly' n annihilates objects of the form Y/n. We show the following results: the n-order of an algebraic triangulated category is infinite; for every prime p…
Extending constructions by Gabriel and Zisman, we develop a functorial framework for the cohomology and homology of simplicial sets with very general coefficient systems given by functors on simplex categories into abelian categories. Furthermore we construct Leray type spectral sequences for any map of simplicial sets. We also show that these constructions generalise and unify the various existing versions of cohomology and homology of small categories and as a bonus provide new insight into their functoriality.
We give an explicit point-set construction of the Dennis trace map from the $K$-theory of endomorphisms $K\mathrm{End}(\mathcal{C})$ to topological Hochschild homology $\mathrm{THH}(\mathcal{C})$ for any spectral Waldhausen category $\mathcal{C}$. We describe the necessary technical foundations, most notably a well-behaved model for the spectral category of diagrams in $\mathcal{C}$ indexed by an ordinary category via the Moore end. This is applied to define a version of Waldhausen's $S_{\bullet}$-construction for spectral Waldhausen categories, which is central to this account of the Dennis t…
We show that every small model category that satisfies certain size conditions can be completed to yield a combinatorial model category, and conversely, every combinatorial model category arises in this way. We will also see that these constructions preserve right properness and compatibility with simplicial enrichment. Along the way, we establish some technical results on the index of accessibility of various constructions on accessible categories, which may be of independent interest.
We develop a general theory of cosimplicial resolutions, homotopy spectral sequences, and completions for objects in model categories, extending work of Bousfield-Kan and Bendersky-Thompson for ordinary spaces. This is based on a generalized cosimplicial version of the Dwyer-Kan-Stover theory of resolution model categories, and we are able to construct our homotopy spectral sequences and completions using very flexible weak resolutions in the spirit of relative homological algebra. We deduce that our completion functors have triple structures and preserve certain fiber squares up to homotopy. …
In this paper we pursue the study of spectral categories initiated in [26]. More precisely, we construct the Universal matrix invariant of spectral categories, i.e. a functor U with values in an additive category Add, which inverts the Morita equivalences, satisfies matrix invariance, and is universal with respect to these two properties. For example, the algebraic K-theory and the topological Hochschild and cyclic homologies are matrix invariants, and so they factor uniquely throw U. As an application, we obtain for free non-trivial trace maps from the Grothendieck group to the topological Ho…
Waldhausen's $K$-theory of the sphere spectrum (closely related to the algebraic $K$-theory of the integers) is a naturally augmented $S^0$-algebra, and so has a Koszul dual. Classic work of Deligne and Goncharov implies an identification of the rationalization of this (covariant) dual with the Hopf algebra of functions on the motivic group for their category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$. This paper argues that the rationalizations of categories of non-commutative motives defined recently by Blumberg, Gepner, and Tabuada consequently have natural enrichments, with morphism objects in the de…
This paper provides an extensive study of the homotopy theory of types of algebras with units, like unital associative algebras or unital commutative algebras for instance. To this purpose, we endow the Koszul dual category of curved coalgebras, where the notion of quasi-isomorphism barely makes sense, with a model category structure Quillen equivalent to that of unital algebras. To prove such a result, we use recent methods based on presentable categories. This allows us to describe the homotopy properties of unital algebras in a simpler and richer way. Moreover, we endow the various model ca…
We prove two results from Morita theory of stable model categories. Both can be regarded as topological versions of recent algebraic theorems. One is on recollements of triangulated categories, which have been studied in the algebraic case by Jørgensen. We give a criterion which answers the following question: When is there a recollement for the derived category of a given symmetric ring spectrum in terms of two other symmetric ring spectra? The other result is on well generated triangulated categories in the sense of Neeman. Porta characterizes the algebraic well generated categories as local…
The Hochschild cohomology of a differential graded algebra, or a differential graded category, admits a natural map to the graded center of its homology category: the characteristic homomorphism. We interpret it as an edge homomorphism in a spectral sequence. This gives a conceptual explanation of the failure of the characteristic homomorphism to be injective or surjective, in general. To illustrate this, we discuss modules over the dual numbers, coherent sheaves over algebraic curves, as well as examples related to free loop spaces and string topology.
For any cohomology theory $H$ that can be factorized through (the Morel-Voevodsky's triangulated motivic homotopy category) $SH^{S^1}(k)$ (or through $SH(k)$) we establish the $SH^{S^1}(k)$-functorialty (resp. $SH(k)$-one) of coniveau spectral sequences for $H$. We also prove: for any affine essentially smooth semi-local $S$ the Cousin complex for $H^*(S)$ splits; if $H$ also factorizes through $SH^+(k)$ or $SH^{MGL}(k)$, then this is also true for any primitive $S$. Moreover, the cohomology of such an $S$ is a direct summand of the cohomology of any its open dense subscheme. This is a vast ge…
