We introduce the completely positive rank, a notion of covering dimension for nuclear $C^*$-algebras and analyze some of its properties.
The completely positive rank behaves nicely with respect to direct sums, quotients, ideals and inductive limits. For abelian $C^*$-algebras it coincides with covering dimension of the spectrum and there are similar results for continuous trace algebras.
As it turns out, a $C^*$-algebra is zero-dimensional precisely if it is $AF$. We consider various examples, particularly of one-dimensional $C^*$-algebras, like the irrational rotation algebras, the Bunce-Deddens algebras or Blackadar's simple unital projectionless $C^*$-algebra.
Finally, we compare the completely positive rank to other concepts of noncommutative covering dimension, such as stable or real rank.
The completely positive rank is an analogue of topological covering dimension, defined for nuclear C*-algebras via completely positive approximations. These may be thought of as simplicial approximations of the algebra, which leads to the concept of piecewise homogeneous maps and a notion of noncommutative simplicial complexes. We introduce a technical variation of the completely positive rank and show that the two theories coincide in many important cases. Furthermore we analyze some of their properties; in particular we show that both theories behave nicely with respect to ideals and that th…
We introduce the concept of finitely coloured equivalence for unital *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras, for which unitary equivalence is the 1-coloured case. We use this notion to classify *-homomorphisms from separable, unital, nuclear C*-algebras into ultrapowers of simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras with compact extremal trace space up to 2-coloured equivalence by their behaviour on traces; this is based on a 1-coloured classification theorem for certain order zero maps, also in terms of tracial data. As an application we calculate the nuclear dimension of non-AF, simple, separ…
We continue the study of $\mathcal{OL}_\infty$ structure of nuclear $C^*$-algebras initiated by Junge, Ozawa and Ruan. In particular, we prove if $\mathcal{OL}_\infty(A)<1.005,$ then $A$ has a separating family of irreducible, stably finite representations. As an application we give examples of nuclear, quasidiagonal $C^*$-algebras $A$ with $\mathcal{OL}_\infty(A)>1.$
We prove that von Neumann algebras and separable nuclear $C^*$-algebras are stable for the Banach-Mazur cb-distance. A technical step is to show that unital almost completely isometric maps between $C^*$-algebras are almost multiplicative and almost selfadjoint. Also as an intermediate result, we compare the Banach-Mazur cb-distance and the Kadison-Kastler distance. Finally, we show that if two $C^*$-algebras are close enough for the cb-distance, then they have at most the same length.
We introduce the nuclear dimension of a C*-algebra; this is a noncommutative version of topological covering dimension based on a modification of the earlier concept of decomposition rank. Our notion behaves well with respect to inductive limits, tensor products, hereditary subalgebras (hence ideals), quotients, and even extensions. It can be computed for many examples; in particular, it is finite for all UCT Kirchberg algebras. In fact, all classes of nuclear C*-algebras which have so far been successfully classified consist of examples with finite nuclear dimension, and it turns out that fin…
This article is devoted to the geometric construction which states a natural correspondence between topological coverings of a foliated manifolds and noncommutative coverings of the operator algebras. However this correspondence is not one to one because there are noncommutaive coverings of foliations which do not comply with discussed in this article construction.
The main result here is that a simple separable C*-algebra is Z-stable (where Z denotes the Jiang-Su algebra) if (i) it has finite nuclear dimension or (ii) it is approximately subhomogeneous with slow dimension growth. This generalizes the main results of [Toms, "K-theoretic rigidity and slow dimension growth"; Winter, "Nuclear dimension and Z-stability of pure C*-algebras"] to the nonunital setting. As a consequence, finite nuclear dimension implies Z-stability even in the case of a separable C*-algebra with finitely many ideals. Algebraic simplicity is established as a fruitful weakening of…
In this note we analyze the C*-algebra associated with a branched covering both as a groupoid C*-algebra and as a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We determine conditions when the algebra is simple and purely infinite. We indicate how to compute the K-theory of several examples, including one related to rational maps on the Riemann sphere.
We show that a $C^\star$-algebra $B$ contains a dense left or right Fréchet ideal $A$, with $A$ a nuclear locally convex space, if and only if the primitive ideal space Prim$(B)$ of $B$ is discrete and countable, and $B/I$ is finite dimensional for each $I \in $ Prim$(B)$. We show the forward implication holds for a general Banach algebra $B$, if the ideal is assumed two-sided. For $C^\star$-algebras, we construct all two-sided dense nuclear ideals by defining a set of matrix-valued Schwartz functions on the countable discrete space Prim$(B)$.
The Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies the one to one correspondence between commutative $C^*$-algebras and locally compact Hausdorff spaces. So any noncommutative $C^*$-algebra can be regarded as a generalization of a topological space. Generalizations of several topological invariants can be defined by algebraical methods. This article contains a pure algebraical construction of (noncommutative) covering projections with finite cyclic groups of covering transformations.
We show that a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is nuclear iff there is a constant $K$ and $α<3$ such that, for any bounded homomorphism $u\colon A \to B(H)$, there is an isomorphism $ξ\colon H\to H$ satisfying $\|ξ^{-1}\|\|ξ\| \le K\|u\|^α$ and such that $ ξ^{-1} u(.) ξ$ is a $*$-homomorphism. In other words, an infinite dimensional $A$ is nuclear iff its length (in ths sense of our previous work on the Kadison similarity problem) is equal to 2.
In this article I study a number of topological and algebraic dimension type properties of simple C*-algebras and their interplay. In particular, a simple C*-algebra is defined to be (tracially) (m,\bar{m})-pure, if it has (strong tracial) m-comparison and is (tracially) \bar{m}-almost divisible. These notions are related to each other, and to nuclear dimension. The main result says that if a separable, simple, nonelementary, unital C*-algebra A with locally finite nuclear dimension is (m,\bar{m})-pure, then it absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. It follows that A is Z-stable if and on…
The Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies the one to one correspondence between commutative $C^*$-algebras and locally compact Hausdorff spaces. So any noncommutative $C^*$-algebra can be regarded as a generalization of a topological space. Generalizations of several topological invariants can be defined by algebraical methods. This article contains a pure algebraical construction of inverse limits in the category of (noncommutative) covering projections. It is proven that Moyal planes are inverse limits of covering projections of noncommutative tori.
Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies a one to one correspondence between commutative $C^*$-algebras and locally compact Hausdorff spaces. So any noncommutative $C^*$-algebra can be regarded as a generalization of a topological space. Generalizations of several topological invariants may be defined by algebraic methods. For example Serre Swan theorem states that complex topological $K$-theory coincides with $K$-theory of $C^*$-algebras. This article devoted to the noncommutative generalization of infinite covering projections. Infinite covering projections of spectral triples are also discussed. …
We introduce a notion of covering dimension for Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras. This dimension is always bounded by the nuclear dimension of the C*-algebra, and for subhomogeneous C*-algebras both dimensions agree. Cuntz semigroups of Z-stable C*-algebras have dimension at most one. Further, the Cuntz semigroup of a simple, Z-stable C*-algebra is zero-dimensional if and only if the C*-algebra has real rank zero or is stably projectionless.
A covering of k-graphs (in the sense of Pask-Quigg-Raeburn) induces an embedding of universal C*-algebras. We show how to build a (k+1)-graph whose universal algebra encodes this embedding. More generally we show how to realise a direct limit of k-graph algebras under embeddings induced from coverings as the universal algebra of a (k+1)-graph. Our main focus is on computing the K-theory of the (k+1)-graph algebra from that of the component k-graph algebras. Examples of our construction include a realisation of the Kirchberg algebra \mathcal{P}_n whose K-theory is opposite to that of \mathcal{O…
Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies contravariant functor from a category of commutative $C^*-$ algebras to a category of locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Therefore any commutative $C^*-$ algebra is an alternative representation of a topological space. Similarly a category of (noncommutative) $C^*-$ algebras can be regarded as a category of generalized (noncommutative) locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Generalizations of topological invariants may be defined by algebraic methods. For example Serre Swan theorem states that complex topological $K$ - theory coincides with $K$ - theory of $C^*$ - …
The subject of quasidiagonality is of much interest in many places - among other things, in the classification program for simple unital separable nuclear C*-algebras. In this note, we give two characterizations of nuclearity and quasidiagonality (for simple unital separable C*-algebras). Our first characterization is the nuclear analogue of Dadarlat's characterization of exact quasidiagonal C*-algebras. Our second characterizatiion is "dual" to the interesting (and important) Popa property first studied by Popa.
In this paper, we show that a completely positive linear map is weakly nuclear if and only if its complexification is weakly nuclear. It is shown that a real $C^*$-algebra is exact if and only if its complexification is exact and similar case is provided for the quasidiaginality.
The graph C*-algebra of a directed graph E is the universal C*-algebra generated by a family of partial isometries satisfying relations which reflect the path structure of E. In the first part of this paper we consider coverings of directed graphs: morphisms p:F->E which are local isomorphisms. We show that the graph algebra C*(F) can be recovered from C*(E) as a crossed product by a coaction of a homogeneous space associated to the fundamental group π_1 (E). These crossed products provide a good model for a general theory of crossed products by homogeneous spaces. The second part of the paper…
We prove that Z-stable, simple, separable, nuclear, non-unital C*-algebras have nuclear dimension at most 1. This completes the equivalence between finite nuclear dimension and Z-stability for simple, separable, nuclear, non-elementary C*-algebras.
The concept of quantization consists in replacing commutative quantities by noncommutative ones. In mathematical language an algebra of continuous functions on a locally compact topological space is replaced with a noncommutative $C^*$-algebra. Some classical topological notions have noncommutative generalizations. This article is concerned with a generalization of coverings.
We obtain an improved upper bound for the nuclear dimension of extensions of $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-stable $\rm{C}^*$-algebras. In particular, we prove that the nuclear dimension of a full extension of an $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-stable $\rm{C}^*$-algebra by a stable AF algebra is one.
We give two characterizations of tracially nuclear C*-algebras. The first is that the finite summand of the second dual is hyperfinite. The second is in terms of a variant of the weak* uniqueness property. The necessary condition holds for all tracially nuclear C*-algebras. When the algebra is separable, we prove the sufficiency.
We exhibit examples of simple separable nuclear C*-algebras, along with actions of the circle group and outer actions of the integers, which are not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposite algebras. In fact, the fixed point subalgebras are not isomorphic to their opposites. The C*-algebras we exhibit are well behaved from the perspective of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras: they are unital C*-algebras in the UCT class, with finite nuclear dimension. One is an AH-algebra with unique tracial state and absorbs the CAR algebra tensorially. The other is a Kirchberg algebra.
For any unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear C*-algebra with finitely many extremal traces, we prove that Z-absorption, strict comparison, and property (SI) are equivalent. We also show that any unital separable simple nuclear C*-algebra with tracial rank zero is approximately divisible, and hence is Z-absorbing.
We show that every nuclear $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable *-homomorphism with a separable exact domain has nuclear dimension at most 1. In particular separable, nuclear, $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable C*-algebras have nuclear dimension 1. We also characterise when $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable C*-algebras have finite decomposition rank in terms of quasidiagonality and primitive-ideal structure, and determine when full $\mathcal O_2$-stable *-homomorphisms have nuclear dimension 0.
We show that the dimension of the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra is determined by the dimensions of the Cuntz semigroups of its separable sub-C*-algebras. This allows us to remove separability assumptions from previous results on the dimension of Cuntz semigroups. To obtain these results, we introduce a notion of approximation for abstract Cuntz semigroups that is compatible with the approximation of a C*-algebra by sub-C*-algebras. We show that many properties for Cuntz semigroups are preserved by approximation and satisfy a Löwenheim-Skolem condition.
We give a partial answer to the question for the precise value of the nuclear dimension of UCT-Kirchberg algebras raised by W. Winter and J. Zacharias. It is shown that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT-class with torsion free $K_1$-group has nuclear dimension 1.
The class of simple separable KK-contractible (KK-equivalent to $\{0\}$) C*-algebras which have finite nuclear dimension is shown to classified by the Elliott invariant. In particular, the class of C*-algebras $A\otimes \mathcal W$ is classifiable, where $A$ is a simple separable C*-algebra with finite nuclear dimension and $\mathcal W$ is the simple inductive limit of Razak algebras with unique trace, which is bounded.
We show that nuclear C*-algebras have a refined version of the completely positive approximation property, in which the maps that approximately factorize through finite dimensional algebras are convex combinations of order zero maps. We use this to show that a separable nuclear C*-algebra A which is closely contained in a C*-algebra B embeds into B.
We study the local operator space structure of nuclear $C^*$-algebras. It is shown that a $C^*$-algebra is nuclear if and only if it is an $\OL_{\infty, \la}$ space for some (and actually for every) $\la > 6$. The $\OL_\infty$ constant $λ$ provides an interesting invariant \[ \OL_\infty (\A) = \inf\{\la: ~ \A ~{\rm is ~ an} ~ {\OL}_{\infty, \la} ~ {\rm space}\} \] for nuclear $C^*$-algebras. Indeed, if $\A$ is a nuclear $C^*$-algebra, then we have $1\le \OL_\infty (\A) \le 6$, and if $\A$ is a unital nuclear $C^*$-algebra with $\OL_{\infty} (\A) \le (\frac {1+{\sqrt 5}}2)^{\frac 12}$, we show …
We prove the title by constructing 2-colourable completely positive approximations for the Toeplitz algebra. Besides results about nuclear dimension and completely positive contractive order zero maps, our argument involves projectivity of the cone over a finite dimensional C*-algebra and Lin's theorem on almost normal matrices.
We extend in this paper the characterisation of a separable nuclear \cst-algebra given by Kirchberg proving that given a unital separable continuous field of nuclear C*-algebras A over a compact metrizable space X, the C(X)-algebra A is isomorphic to a unital C(X)-subalgebra of the trivial continuous field C(X;O_2), image of C(X;O_2) by a norm one projection.
In this paper, we show that if E is a Fell bundle over an amenable étale locally compact Hausdorff groupoid such that every fiber on the unit space is nuclear, then $C?^*r(E)$ is also nuclear. In order to show this result, we introduce (minimal) tensor products of Fell bundles with fixed $C^*$-algebras.
The class of simple separable KK-contractible (KK-equivalent to $\{0\}$) C*-algebras which have finite nuclear dimension is shown to be classified by the Elliott invariant. In particular, the class of C*-algebras $A\otimes \mathcal W$ is classifiable, where $A$ is a simple separable C*-algebra with finite nuclear dimension and $\mathcal W$ is the simple inductive limit of Razak algebras with unique trace, which is bounded.
We compute the nuclear dimension of separable, simple, unital, nuclear, Z-stable C*-algebras. This makes classification accessible from Z-stability and in particular brings large classes of C*-algebras associated to free and minimal actions of amenable groups on finite dimensional spaces within the scope of the Elliott classification programme.
We prove that faithful traces on separable and nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. This has a number of consequences. Firstly, by results of many hands, the classification of unital, separable, simple and nuclear C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension which satisfy the UCT is now complete. Secondly, our result links the finite to the general version of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the expected way and hence clarifies the relation between decomposition rank and nuclear dimension. Finally, we confirm the Rosenberg conjecture: discrete, amenable groups have quasidiagonal C*-…
We review the notion of nuclear dimension for C*-algebras introduced by Winter and Zacharias. We explain why it is a non-commutative version of topological dimension. After presenting several examples, we give a brief overview of the state of the art.
We prove that the pure state space is homogeneous under the action of the group of asymptotically inner automorphisms for all the separable simple nuclear C*-algebras. If simplicity is not assumed for the C*-algebras, the set of pure states whose GNS representations are faithful is homogeneous for the above action.
We investigate the interplay of the following regularity properties for non-simple C*-algebras: finite nuclear dimension, Z-stability, and algebraic regularity in the Cuntz semigroup. We show that finite nuclear dimension implies algebraic regularity in the Cuntz semigroup, provided that known type I obstructions are avoided. We demonstrate how finite nuclear dimension can be used to study the structure of the central sequence algebra, by factorizing the identity map on the central sequence algebra, in a manner resembling the factorization arising in the definition of nuclear dimension. Result…
We show that separable, nuclear and strongly purely infinite C*-algebras have finite nuclear dimension. In fact, the value is at most three. This exploits a deep structural result of Kirchberg and Rørdam on strongly purely infinite C*-algebras that are homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way.
In the paper, we introduce a new concept of topological orbit dimension of $n$-tuples of elements in a unital C$^*$ algebra. Using this concept, we conclude that the Voiculescu's topological free entropy dimension of any family of self-adjoint generators of a nuclear C$^*$ algebra is less than or equal to 1. We also show that the topological free entropy dimension is additive in the full free products of unital C$^*$ algebras. In the appendix, we show that unital full free product of Blackadar and Kirchberg's unital MF algebras is also MF algebra.
I give an overview of recent developments in the structure and classification theory of separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras. I will in particular focus on the role of quasidiagonality and amenability for classification, and on the regularity conjecture and its interplay with internal and external approximation properties.
Let A be a unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear C*-algebra with at least one tracial state. We prove that if the trace space of A has compact finite-dimensional extreme boundary then there exist unital embeddings of matrix algebras into a certain central sequence algebra of A which is determined by the uniform topology on the trace space. As an application, it is shown that if furthermore A has strict comparison then A absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially.
Consider a graph C*-algebra C*(E) with a purely infinite ideal I (possibly all of C*(E)) such that I has only finitely many ideals and C*(E)/I is approximately finite dimensional. We prove that the nuclear dimension of C*(E) is 1. If I has infinitely many ideals, then the nuclear dimension of C*(E) is either 1 or 2.
The Jiang--Su algebra Z has come to prominence in the classification program for nuclear C*-algebras of late, due primarily to the fact that Elliott's classification conjecture predicts that all simple, separable, and nuclear C*-algebras with unperforated K-theory will absorb Z tensorially (i.e., will be Z-stable). There exist counterexamples which suggest that the conjecture will only hold for simple, nuclear, separable and Z-stable C*-algebras. We prove that virtually all classes of nuclear C*-algebras for which the Elliott conjecture has been confirmed so far, consist of Z-stable C*-algebra…
Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all C*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear C*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the cl…
We provide examples of ambient nuclear C*-algebras of non-nuclear C*-algebras with no proper intermediate C*-algebras. In particular this gives the first examples of minimal ambient nuclear C*-algebras of non-nuclear C*-algebras. For this purpose, we study generic Cantor systems of infinite free product groups.
k-graphs are higher-rank analogues of directed graphs which were first developed to provide combinatorial models for operator algebras of Cuntz-Krieger type. Here we develop the theory of covering spaces for k-graphs, obtaining a satisfactory version of the usual topological classification in terms of subgroups of a fundamental group. We then use this classification to describe the C*-algebras of covering k-graphs as crossed products by coactions of homogeneous spaces, generalizing recent results on the C*-algebras of graphs.
We show that for any locally compact Hausdorff space $Y$ with finite covering dimension and for any continuous flow $\mathbb{R} \curvearrowright Y$, the resulting crossed product $C^*$-algebra $C_0(Y) \rtimes \mathbb{R}$ has finite nuclear dimension. This generalizes previous results for free flows, where this was proved using Rokhlin dimension techniques. As an application, we obtain bounds for the nuclear dimension of $C^*$-algebras associated to one-dimensional orientable foliations. This result is analogous to the one we obtained earlier for non-free actions of $\mathbb{Z}$. Some novel tec…
Let $P \subset A$ be an inclusion of separable unital C*-algebras with finite Watatani index. Suppose that $E \colon A \rightarrow P$ has the Rokhlin property, that is, there is a projection $e \in A' \cap A^\infty$ such that $E^\infty(e) = ({\rm Index}E)^{-1}1$. We show that if $A$ has nuclear dimension $n$, then $P$ has nuclear dimension less than or equal to $n$. In particular, if an action $α$ of a finite group $G$ on $A$ has the Rokhlin property, then the nuclear dimension of the crossed product algebra $A \rtimes_αG$ is less than or equal to that of $A$.
We introduce a graph theoretic property called Condition (N) for finitely separated graphs and prove that it is equivalent to both nuclearity and exactness of the associated universal tame graph C*-algebra.
