The subject of quasidiagonality is of much interest in many places - among other things, in the classification program for simple unital separable nuclear C*-algebras. In this note, we give two characterizations of nuclearity and quasidiagonality (for simple unital separable C*-algebras).
Our first characterization is the nuclear analogue of Dadarlat's characterization of exact quasidiagonal C*-algebras. Our second characterizatiion is "dual" to the interesting (and important) Popa property first studied by Popa.
I give an overview of recent developments in the structure and classification theory of separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras. I will in particular focus on the role of quasidiagonality and amenability for classification, and on the regularity conjecture and its interplay with internal and external approximation properties.
We prove that faithful traces on separable and nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. This has a number of consequences. Firstly, by results of many hands, the classification of unital, separable, simple and nuclear C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension which satisfy the UCT is now complete. Secondly, our result links the finite to the general version of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the expected way and hence clarifies the relation between decomposition rank and nuclear dimension. Finally, we confirm the Rosenberg conjecture: discrete, amenable groups have quasidiagonal C*-…
In this paper, we show that a completely positive linear map is weakly nuclear if and only if its complexification is weakly nuclear. It is shown that a real $C^*$-algebra is exact if and only if its complexification is exact and similar case is provided for the quasidiaginality.
It is shown that a separable C*-algebra is inner quasidiagonal if and only if it has a separating family of quasidiagonal irreducible representations. As a consequence, a separable C*-algebra is a strong NF algebra if and only if it is nuclear and has a separating family of quasidiagonal irreducible representations. We also obtain some permanence properties of the class of inner quasidiagonal C*-algebras.
Recently, it was proved by Tikuisis, White and Winter that any faithful trace on a separable, nuclear $C^\ast$-algebras in the UCT class is quasidiagonal. Building on their work, we generalise the result, and show that any faithful, amenable trace on a separable, exact $C^\ast$-algebras in the UCT class is quasidiagonal. We also prove that any amenable trace on a separable, exact, quasidiagonal $C^\ast$-algebra in the UCT class is quasidiagonal.
We continue the study of $\mathcal{OL}_\infty$ structure of nuclear $C^*$-algebras initiated by Junge, Ozawa and Ruan. In particular, we prove if $\mathcal{OL}_\infty(A)<1.005,$ then $A$ has a separating family of irreducible, stably finite representations. As an application we give examples of nuclear, quasidiagonal $C^*$-algebras $A$ with $\mathcal{OL}_\infty(A)>1.$
We study the validity of the Blackadar-Kirchberg conjecture for extensions of separable, nuclear, quasidiagonal $C^*$-algebras that satisfy the UCT. More specifically, we show that the conjecture for the extension has an affirmative answer if the ideal lies in a class of $C^*$-algebras that is closed under local approximations and contains all separable ASH algebras, as well as certain classes of simple, unital $C^*$-algebras and crossed products of unital $C^*$-algebras with the integers.
We study the extension problem for quasidiagonal (QD) C*-algebras (i.e. when is an extension of QD C*-algebras again QD?). The main positive result states that in many instances an extension will remain QD provided that a certain boundary arising from the K-theory of the extension vanishes. A K-theoretic Hahn-Banach type property is also introduced for QD C*-algebras. We show that every nuclear QD C*-algebra has this Hahn-Banach property if and only if the extension problem for many QD C*-algebras is completely determined by a boundary map on K-theory.
We show that the group C*-algebra of any elementary amenable group is quasidiagonal. This is an offspring of recent progress in the classification theory of nuclear C*-algebras.
In this paper we identify QD(A,B), the quasidiagonal classes in KK_1(A,B), in terms of K_*(A) and K_*(B), and we use these results in various applications. Here is our central result. Theorem: Suppose that A is in the category of separable nuclear C^*-algebras which satisfy the UCT and A is quasidiagonal relative to B. Then there is a natural isomorphism QD(A,B) = Pext (K_*(A), K_*(B))_0 . Thus quasidiagonality of KK-classes is indeed a topological invariant. We give several applications. Finally, we establish a converse to a theorem of Davidson, Herrero, and Salinas, giving conditions under w…
Suppose B is an ultraproduct of finite dimensional C^\ast-algebras. We consider mapping and injectability properties for separable C^\ast-algebras into B. In the case of approximately finite C^\ast-algebras, we obtain a classification of these mappings up to inner conjugacy. Using a Theorem of Voiculescu, we show that for nuclear C^\ast-algebras injectability into an ultraproduct of finite dimensional C^\ast-algebras is equivalent to quasidiagonality.
We introduce the decomposition rank, a notion of covering dimension for nuclear C^*-algebras. The decomposition rank generalizes ordinary covering dimension and has nice permanence properties; in particular, it behaves well with respect to direct sums, quotients, inductive limits, unitization and quasidiagonal extensions. Moreover, it passes to hereditary subalgebras and is invariant under stabilization. It turns out that the decomposition rank can be finite only for strongly quasidiagonal C^*-algebras and that it is closely related to the classification program.
A trace on a C*-algebra is amenable (resp. quasidiagonal) if it admits a net of completely positive, contractive maps into matrix algebras which approximately preserve the trace and are approximately multiplicative in the 2-norm (resp. operator norm). Using that the double commutant of a nuclear C*-algebras is hyperfinite, it is easy to see that traces on nuclear C*-algebras are amenable. A recent result of Tikuisis, White, and Winter shows that faithful traces on separable, nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. We give a new proof of this result using the extension theory of…
This is a survey of recent progress in the structure and classification theory of nuclear C*-algebras. In particular, I outline how the Universal Coefficient Theorem ensures a positive answer to the quasidiagonality question in the presence of faithful traces. This has strong consequences for the regularity conjecture and the classification problem for separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras. Moreover, it entails a positive solution to Rosenberg's conjecture on quasidiagonality of reduced C*-algebras of discrete amenable groups. This note is largely based on a joint paper with Aaron Tikuisis an…
Let A be a unital separable simple C*-algebra with a unique tracial state. We prove that if A is nuclear and quasidiagonal, then A tensored with the universal UHF-algebra has decomposition rank at most one. Then it is proved that A is nuclear, quasidiagonal and has strict comparison if and only if A has finite decomposition rank. For such A, we also give a direct proof that A tensored with a UHF-algebra has tracial rank zero. Applying this characterization, we obtain a counter-example to the Powers-Sakai conjecture.
We show that every nuclear $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable *-homomorphism with a separable exact domain has nuclear dimension at most 1. In particular separable, nuclear, $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable C*-algebras have nuclear dimension 1. We also characterise when $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable C*-algebras have finite decomposition rank in terms of quasidiagonality and primitive-ideal structure, and determine when full $\mathcal O_2$-stable *-homomorphisms have nuclear dimension 0.
The mid-seventies' works on C*-algebras of Brown-Douglas-Fillmore and Elliott both contained uniqueness and existence results in a now standard sense. These papers served as keystones for two separate theories -- KK-theory and the classification program -- which for many years parted ways with only moderate interaction. But recent years have seen a fruitful interaction which has been one of the main engines behind rapid progress in the classification program. In the present paper we take this interaction even further. We prove general existence and uniqueness results using KK-theory and a conc…
I show that quasidiagonality and AF embeddability are equivalent properties for traceless $\mathrm C^\ast$-algebras and are characterised in terms of the primitive ideal space. For nuclear $\mathrm C^\ast$-algebras the same characterisation determines when Connes and Higson's $E$-theory can be unsuspended.
In this paper we develop the notion of Herz-Schur multipliers to the context of Fell bundle, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition if the reduced cross-sectional $C^{\ast}$-algebra $C_r^{\ast}(\mathfrak{B})$ of Fell bundle $\mathfrak{B}$ over discrete group $G$ is nuclear in terms of this generalized notion. As an application, we prove that if $C_r^{\ast}(\mathfrak{B})$ is nuclear, then for any subgroup $H \subset G$, the $C^{\ast}$-algebra $C_r^{\ast}(\mathfrak{B}_H)$ is nuclear.
Connectivity is a homotopy invariant property of separable C*-algebras which has three notable consequences: absence of nontrivial projections, quasidiagonality and a more geometric realization of KK-theory for nuclear C*-algebras using asymptotic morphisms. The purpose of this paper is to further explore the class of connective C*-algebras. We give new characterizations of connectivity for exact and for nuclear separable C*-algebras and show that an extension of connective separable nuclear C*-algebras is connective. We establish connectivity or lack of connectivity for C*-algebras associated…
Nuclear C*-algebras enjoy a number of approximation properties, most famously the completely positive approximation property. This was recently sharpened to arrange for the incoming maps to be sums of order-zero maps. We show that, in addition, the outgoing maps can be chosen to be asymptotically order-zero. Further these maps can be chosen to be asymptotically multiplicative if and only if the C*-algebra and all its traces are quasidiagonal.
For a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and a set $X$ we give a Stinespring-type characterisation of the completely positive Schur $A$-multipliers on $K(\ell^2(X))\otimes A$. We then relate them to completely positive Herz-Schur multipliers on $C^*$-algebraic crossed products of the form $A\rtimes_{α,r} G$, with $G$ a discrete group, whose various versions were considered earlier by Anantharaman-Delaroche, Bédos and Conti, and Dong and Ruan. The latter maps are shown to implement approximation properties, such as nuclearity or the Haagerup property, for $A\rtimes_{α,r} G$.
