Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian dynamical systems are well formalized mathematically. They give rise to geometric structures describing motion of a point in smooth manifolds. Riemannian metric is a different geometric structure formalizing concepts of length and angle. The interplay of Riemannian metric and its metric connection with mechanical structures produces some features which are absent in the case of general (non-Riemannian) manifolds. The aim of present paper is to discuss these features and develop special language for describing Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian dynamical systems in Riemannian manifolds.
The work done by Isaac Newton more than three hundred years ago, continues being a path to increase our knowledge of Nature. To better understand all the ideas behind it, one of the finest ways is to generalize them to wider situations. In this report we make a review of one of these enlargements, the one that bears the mechanical systems from the elementary homogeneous three dimensional Euclidean space to the more abstract geometry of a Riemannian manifold.
Explicit description for arbitrary Newtonian dynamical system admitting the normal shift in Riemannian manifold of the dimension $n\geq 3$ is found. On the base of this result the kinematics of normal shift of hypersurfaces along trajectories of such system is studied.
It is known that some equations of differential geometry are derived from variational principle in form of Euler-Lagrange equations. The equations of geodesic flow in Riemannian geometry is an example. Conversely, having Lagrangian dynamical system in a manifold, one can consider it as geometric equipment of this manifold. Then properties of other dynamical systems can be studied relatively as compared to this Lagrangian one. This gives fruitful analogies for generalization. In present paper theory of normal shift of hypersurfaces is generalized from Riemannian geometry to the geometry determi…
We show that the degenerate special Lagrangian equation, recently introduced by Rubinstein-Solomon, induces a global equation on every Riemannian manifold, and that for certain associated geometries this equation governs, as it does in the Euclidean setting, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangians. For example, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangian sections of a smooth Calabi-Yau torus fibration are governed by the Riemannian DSL on the base manifold. We then develop their analytic techniques, specifically modifications of the Dirichlet duality theory of Harvey-Lawson, in the Ri…
In this paper we study the existence of periodic orbits with prescribed energy levels of convex Lagrangian systems on complete Riemannian manifolds. We extend the existence results of Contreras by developing a modified minimax principal to a class of Lagrangian systems on noncompact Riemannian manifolds, namely the so called $\lsh$ Lagrangian systems. In particular, we prove that for almost every $k\in(0,c_u(L))$ the exact magnetic flow associated to a $\lsh$ Lagrangian has a contractible periodic orbit with energy $k$. We also discuss the existence and non-existence of closed geodesics on the…
Motivated by various results on homogeneous geodesics of Riemannian spaces, we study homogeneous trajectories, i.e. trajectories which are orbits of a one-parameter symmetry group, of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. We present criteria under which an orbit of a one-parameter subgroup of a symmetry group G is a solution of the Euler-Lagrange or Hamiltonian equations. In particular, we generalize the `geodesic lemma' known in Riemannian geometry to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. We present results on the existence of homogeneous trajectories of Lagrangian systems. We study Hamiltonian a…
The self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows have been defined and studied on the Euclidean space. In this paper we initiate a general treatment of the self-similar solutions to the mean curvature flows on Riemannian cone manifolds. As a typical result we extend the well-known result of Huisken about the asymptotic behavior for the singularities of the mean curvature flows. We also extend the results on special Lagrangian submanifolds on $\mathbb C^n$ to the toric Calabi-Yau cones over Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.
We use a Lagrangian perspective to show the limiting absorption principle on Riemannian scattering, i.e. asymptotically conic, spaces, and their generalizations. More precisely we show that, for non-zero spectral parameter, the `on spectrum', as well as the `off-spectrum', spectral family is Fredholm in function spaces which encode the Lagrangian regularity of generalizations of `outgoing spherical waves' of scattering theory, and indeed this persists in the `physical half plane'.
We consider collections of Lagrangian submanifolds of a given symplectic manifold which respect uniform bounds of curvature type coming from an auxiliary Riemannian metric. We prove that, for a large class of metrics on these collections, convergence to an embedded Lagrangian submanifold implies convergence to it in the Hausdorff metric. This class of metrics includes well-known metrics such as the Lagrangian Hofer metric, the spectral norm and the shadow metrics introduced by Biran, Cornea and Shelukhin arXiv:1806.06630. The proof relies on a version of the monotonicity lemma, applied on a ca…
Class of Newtonian dynamical systems admitting normal blow-up of points in Riemannian manifolds is considered. Geometric interpretation for weak normality condition, which arose earlier in the theory of dynamical systems admitting the normal shift of hypersurfaces, is found.
Given an oriented Riemannian surface $(Σ, g)$, its tangent bundle $TΣ$ enjoys a natural pseudo-Kähler structure, that is the combination of a complex structure $\J$, a pseudo-metric $\G$ with neutral signature and a symplectic structure $\Om$. We give a local classification of those surfaces of $TΣ$ which are both Lagrangian with respect to $\Om$ and minimal with respect to $\G$. We first show that if $g$ is non-flat, the only such surfaces are affine normal bundles over geodesics. In the flat case there is, in contrast, a large set of Lagrangian minimal surfaces, which is described explicitly…
We prove an estimate on the difference of Maslov indices relative to the choice of two distinct reference Lagrangians of a continuous path in the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. We discuss some applications to the study of conjugate and focal points along a geodesic in a semi-Riemannian manifold.
Let $(Σ_1,g_1)$ and $(Σ_2,g_2)$ be connected, complete and orientable Riemannian two manifolds. Consider the two canonical Kähler structures $(G^ε,J,Ω^ε)$ on the product 4-manifold $Σ_1\timesΣ_2$ given by $ G^ε=g_1\oplus εg_2$, $ε=\pm 1$ and $J$ is the canonical product complex structure. Thus for $ε=1$ the Kähler metric $G^+$ is Riemannian while for $ε=-1$, $G^-$ is of neutral signature. We show that the metric $G^ε$ is locally conformally flat iff the Gauss curvatures $κ(g_1)$ and $κ(g_2)$ are both constants satisfying $κ(g_1)=-εκ(g_2)$. We also give conditions on the Gauss curvatures for wh…
In this paper, we study Riemannian, anti-invariant Riemannian and Lagrangian submersions. We prove that the horizontal distribution of a Lagrangian submersion from a Kaehlerian manifold is integrable. We also give some applications of this result. Moreover, we investigate the effect of the submersion to the geometry of its total manifold and its fibers.
In this paper we consider minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in $n$-dimensional complex space forms. More precisely, we study such submanifolds which, endowed with the induced metrics, write as a Riemannian product of two Riemannian manifolds, each having constant sectional curvature. As the main result, we give a complete classification of these submanifolds.
Normality equations describe Newtonian dynamical systems admitting normal shift of hypersurfaces. They were first derived in Euclidean geometry, then in Riemannian geometry. Recently they were rederived in more general case, when geometry of manifold is given by generalized Legendre transformation. As appears, in this case some part of normality equations describe generalized Legendre transformation itself irrespective to that Newtonian dynamical system, for which others are written. In present paper this smaller part of normality equations is studied.
The famous Nash embedding theorem published in 1956 was aiming for the opportunity to use extrinsic help in the study of (intrinsic) Riemannian geometry, if Riemannian manifolds could be regarded as Riemannian submanifolds. However, this hope had not been materialized yet according to \cite{G}. The main reason for this was the lack of control of the extrinsic properties of the submanifolds by the known intrinsic invariants. In order to overcome such difficulties as well as to provide answers to an open question on minimal immersions, the first author introduced in the early 1990's new types of…
We develop a unifed theory to study geometry of manifolds with different holonomy groups. They are classified by (1) real, complex, quaternion or octonion number they are defined over and (2) being special or not. Specialty is an orientation with respect to the corresponding normed algebra A. For example, special Riemannian A-manifolds are oriented Riemannian, Calabi-Yau, Hyperkahler and G_2-manifolds respectively. For vector bundles over such manifolds, we introduce (special) A-connections. They include holomorphic, Hermitian Yang-Mills, Anti-Self-Dual and Donaldson-Thomas connections. Simila…
The system of weak normality equations constitutes a part in the complete system of normality equations. Solutions of each of these two systems of equations are associated with some definite classes of Newtonian dynamical systems in Riemannian manifolds. In this paper for the case of simplest flat Riemannian manifold $M=\Bbb R^n$ with $n\geq 3$ we show that there exist solutions of weak normality equations that do not solve complete system of normality equations in whole. Hence associated classes of Newtonian dynamical systems do not coincide with each other.
B. Sahin [9] introduced the notion of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. In the present paper we extend the notion of anti-invariant and Lagrangian Riemannian submersions (a special anti-invariant Riemannian submersion) to the case of locally conformal Kaehler manifolds. We discuss the geometry of foliation and obtain some decomposition theorems for the total manifold of such submersions.
As a generalization of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions and Lagrangian Riemannian submersions, we introduce the notions of h-anti-invariant submersions and h-Lagrangian submersions from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We obtain characterizations and investigate some properties: the integrability of distributions, the geometry of foliations, and the harmonicity of such maps. We also find a condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and give some examples of such maps. Finally, we obtain some types of decomposition theorems.
We prove that certain Riemannian manifolds can be isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds. For example we prove that given any real-analytic one parameter family of Riemannian metrics $g_t$ on a 3-dimensional manifold $Y$ with volume form independent of $t$ and with a real-analytic family of nowhere vanishing harmonic one forms $θ_t$, then $(Y, g_t)$ can be realized as a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$. We also prove that certain principal torus bundles can be equivariantly and isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds with torus actio…
The space of positive Lagrangians in an almost Calabi-Yau manifold is an open set in the space of all Lagrangian submanifolds. A Hamiltonian isotopy class of positive Lagrangians admits a natural Riemannian metric $Υ$, which gives rise to a notion of geodesics. We study geodesics of positive $O_n(\mathbb{R})$ invariant Lagrangian spheres in $n$-dimensional $A_m$ Milnor fibers. We show the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the initial value problem and the boundary value problem. In particular, we obtain examples of smooth geodesics of positive Lagrangians in arbitrary dimension. …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a quasi-biharmonic submanifold in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold and classify quasi-biharmonic marginally trapped Lagrangian surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms.
Newtonian dynamical systems which accept the normal shift on an arbitrary Riemannian manifold are considered. For them the determinating equations making the weak normality condition are derived. The expansion for the algebra of tensor fields is constructed.
A few formulas and theorems for statistical structures are proved. They deal with various curvatures as well as with metric properties of the cubic form or its covariant derivative. Some of them generalize formulas and theorems known in the case of Lagrangian submanifolds or affine hypersurfaces.
Every closed, oriented, real analytic Riemannian 3-manifold can be isometrically embedded as a special Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, even as the real locus of an antiholomorphic, isometric involution. Every closed, oriented, real analytic Riemannian 4-manifold whose bundle of self-dual 2-forms is trivial can be isometrically embedded as a coassociative submanifold in a G_2-manifold, even as the fixed locus of an anti-G_2 involution. These results, when coupled with McLean's analysis of the moduli spaces of such calibrated submanifolds, yield a plentiful supply of examples of c…
As a generalization of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions, we introduce anti-invariant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We give examples and investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of an anti-Riemannian map. Then we give a decomposition theorem for the source manifold of such maps. We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for anti-invariant Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic and show that every pluriharmonic Lagrangian Riemannian map, which is a special anti-invariant Riemannian map, from a Kähler manifo…
We prove that if the unit codisc bundle of a closed Riemannian manifold embeds symplectically into a symplectic cylinder of radius one then the length of the shortest nontrivial closed geodesic is at most half the area of the unit disc.
Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian spheres in Kaehler-Einstein surfaces are minimal. We prove that in the family of non-Einstein Kaehler surfaces given by the product $Σ_1\timesΣ_2$ of two complete orientable Riemannian surfaces of different constant Gauss curvatures, there is only a (non minimal) Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian sphere. This example is defined when the surfaces $Σ_1$ and $ Σ_2$ are spheres.
Consider the complex linear space C^n endowed with the canonical pseudo-Hermitian form of signature (2p,2(n-p)). This yields both a pseudo-Riemannian and a symplectic structure on C^n. We prove that those submanifolds which are both Lagrangian and minimal with respect to these structures minimize the volume in their Lagrangian homology class. We also describe several families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds. In particular, we characterize the minimal Lagrangian surfaces in C^2 endowed with its natural neutral metric and the equivariant minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of C^n with arbitrary s…
An isometric immersion $f:M^n\to \tilde M^n$ from a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M^n$ into a Kähler $n$-manifold $\tilde M^n$ is called {\it Lagrangian} if the complex structure $J$ of the ambient manifold $\tilde M^n$ interchanges each tangent space of $M^n$ with the corresponding normal space. In this paper, we completely classify spherical Lagrangian submanifolds in complex Euclidean spaces. Furthermore, we also provide two corresponding classification theorems for Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex pseudo-Euclidean spaces with arbitrary complex index.
The following three geometrical structures on a manifold are studied in detail: (1) Leibnizian: a non-vanishing 1-form $Ω$ plus a Riemannian metric $\h$ on its annhilator vector bundle. In particular, the possible dimensions of the automorphism group of a Leibnizian G-structure are characterized. (2) Galilean: Leibnizian structure endowed with an affine connection $\nabla$ (gauge field) which parallelizes $Ω$ and $\h$. Fixed any vector field of observers Z ($Ω(Z) = 1$), an explicit Koszul--type formula which reconstruct bijectively all the possible $\nabla$'s from the gravitational ${\cal G} =…
In this expository note we describe important examples of Lagrangian mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{C}^2$ which are invariant under a circle action. Through these examples, we see compact and non-compact situations, long-time existence, singularities forming via explicit models, and significant objects in Riemannian and symplectic geometry, including the Clifford torus, Chekanov torus, Whitney sphere and Lawlor necks.
