We study the K-theory of actions of diagonalizable group schemes on noetherian regular separated algebraic spaces: our main result shows how to reconstruct the K-theory ring of such an action from the K-theory rings of the loci where the stabilizers have constant dimension. We apply this to the calculation of the equivariant K-theory of toric varieties, and give conditions under which the Merkurjev spectral sequence degenerates, so that the equivariant K-theory ring determines the ordinary K-theory ring. We also prove a very refined localization theorem for actions of this type.
We define the notion of inseparable coverings of schemes and we propose a ramification formalism for them, along the lines of the classical one. Using this formalism we prove a formula analogous to the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula for generic torsors under infinitesimal diagonalizable group schemes.
Sets of monomials separating Zariski closed orbits under diagonalizable group actions are characterized in terms of the monoid of zero-sum sequences over the character group. This is applied to compare the degree bounds for separating invariants and generating invariants of diagonalizable group actions.
We study actions of diagonalizable groups on toroidal schemes (i.e. logarithmically regular logarithmic schemes). In particular, we show that for so-called toroidal actions the quotient is again a toroidal scheme. Our main result constructs for an arbitrary action a canonical torification - making the action toridal after an equivariant blowings up. This extends earlier results of Abramovich-de Jong, Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk, and Gabber in various aspects.
We prove a localization formula in equivariant algebraic $K$-theory for an arbitrary complex algebraic group acting with finite stabilizer on a smooth algebraic space. This extends to non-diagonalizable groups the localization formulas H.A. Nielsen in equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles and R.W. Thomason for higher $K$-theory of equivariant coherent sheaves. As an application we give a Riemann-Roch formula for quotients of smooth algebraic spaces by proper group actions. This formula extends previous work of B. Toen for stacks with quasi-projective moduli spaces and the authors for quotie…
Let $H$ be a diagonalizable group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic, and $X$ a normal $k$-variety with an $H$-action. Under a mild hypothesis, e.g. $H$ a torus or $X$ quasiprojective, we construct a certain quotient log pair $(Y,Δ)$ and show that $X$ is F-split (F-regular) if and only if the pair $(Y,Δ)$ if F-split (F-regular). We relate splittings of $X$ compatible with $H$-invariant subvarieties to compatible splittings of $(Y,Δ)$, as well as discussing diagonal splittings of $X$. We apply this machinery to analyze the F-splitting and F-regularity of complexit…
We study relatively affine actions of a diagonalizable group $G$ on locally noetherian schemes. In particular, we generalize Luna's fundamental lemma when applied to a diagonalizable group: we obtain criteria for a $G$-equivariant morphism $f: X'\to X$ to be $strongly\ equivariant$, namely the base change of the morphism $f/\!/G$ of quotient schemes, and establish descent criteria for $f/\!/G$ to be an open embedding, étale, smooth, regular, syntomic, or lci.
Let $G$ be a complex, linear algebraic group acting on an algebraic space $X$. The purpose of this paper is to prove a Riemann-Roch theorem (Theorem 5.3) which gives a description of the completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group $G_0(G,X)$ at any maximal ideal of the representation ring $R(G) \otimes \C$ in terms of equivariant cycles. The main new technique for proving this theorem is our non-abelian completion theorem (Theorem 4.3) for equivariant $K$-theory. Theorem 4.3 generalizes the classical localization theorems for diagonalizable group actions to arbitrary groups.
We study global primary decompositions in the category of sheaves on a scheme which are equivariant under the action of an algebraic group. We show that equivariant primary decompositions exist if the group is connected. As main application we consider the case of varieties which are quotients of a quasi-affine variety by the action of a diagonalizable group and thus admit a homogeneous coordinate ring, such as toric varieties. Comparing these decompositions with primary decompositions of graded modules over the homogeneous coordinate ring, we show that these are equivalent if the action of th…
We view the inertia construction of algebraic stacks as an operator on the Grothendieck groups of various categories of algebraic stacks. We show that the inertia operator is locally finite and diagonalizable. This is proved for the Grothendieck group of Deligne-Mumford stacks over a base scheme and the category of quasi-split Artin stacks defined over a field of characteristic zero. Motivated by the quasi-splitness condition, in [2] we consider the inertia operator of the Hall algebra of algebroids, and applications of it in generalized Donaldson-Thomas theory.
Let $p$ be a prime integer, $k$ be a $p$-closed field of characteristic $\neq p$, $T$ be a torus defined over $k$, $F$ be a finite $p$-group, and $1\to T \to G \to F \to 1$ be an exact sequence of algebraic groups. Extending earlier work of N. Karpenko and A. Merkurjev, R. Lötscher, M. MacDonald, A. Meyer, and the first author showed that \[\min\dim(V) - \min\dim(G) \leqslant \text{ed}(G; p) \leqslant \min \dim(W) - \dim(G),\] where $V$ and $W$ range over the $p$-faithful and $p$-generically free $k$-representations of $G$, respectively. They conjectured that the upper bound is, in fact, sharp…
Let G be an algebraic group and let X be a generically free G-variety. We show that X can be transformed, by a sequence of blowups with smooth G-equivariant centers, into a G-variety X' with the following property: the stabilizer of every point of X' is isomorphic to a semidirect product of a unipotent group U and a diagonalizable group A. As an application of this and related results, we prove new lower bounds on essential dimensions of some algebraic groups. We also show that certain polynomials in one variable cannot be simplified by a Tschirnhaus transformation.
We prove a decomposition theorem for the equivariant K-theory of actions of affine group schemes G of finite type over a field on regular separated noetherian algebraic spaces, under the hypothesis that the actions have finite geometric stabilizers and satisfy a rationality condition together with a technical condition which holds e.g. for G abelian or smooth. We describe in an Appendix various complicial bi-Waldhausen categories (in Thomason's terminology) modelling the equivariant K-theory of regular noetherian separated algebraic spaces.
We introduce an equivariant algebraic cobordism theory Ω^G for algebraic varieties with G-action, where G is a split diagonalizable group scheme over a field k. It is done by combining the construction of the algebraic cobordism theory Ωby F. Morel and M. Levine, with the notion of (G, F)-formal group law with respect to a complete G-universe and complete G-flag F as introduced by M. Cole, J. P. C. Greenlees and I. Kriz. In particular, we use their corresponding representing ring L_G(F) in place of the Lazard ring L. We show that localization property and homotopy invariance property hold in Ω…
In this note, we present a few existence theorems for the quotient of a scheme by the action of a group. The first two sections are devoted to Grothendieck topologies and descent theory. The third one is dealing with quotients: we first give direct and (almost) complete proofs for the main existence results of SGA 3, exposé V. Then we discuss some specific situations: the quotient of an algebraic group over a field by a subgroup, the quotient of a group by the normalizer of a smooth subgroup, and quotients of affine schemes by free actions of diagonalizable groups. From place to place, the ori…
According to the classical theorem, every irreducible algebraic variety endowed with a nontrivial rational action of a connected linear algebraic group is birationally isomorphic to a product of another algebraic variety and ${\bf P}^s$ with positive $s$. We show that the classical proof of this theorem actually works only in characteristic $0$ and we give a characteristic free proof of it. To this end we prove and use a characterization of connected linear algebraic groups $G$ with the property that every rational action of $G$ on an irreducible algebraic variety is birationally equivalent to…
We extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic C-varieties endowed with effective torus actions to the real setting. In particular, we focus on actions of quasi-split real tori, in which case we obtain a simpler presentation.
In this article we review the question of constructing geometric quotients of actions of linear algebraic groups on irreducible varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero, in the spirit of Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). The article surveys some recent work on geometric invariant theory and quotients of varieties by linear algebraic group actions, as well as background material on linear algebraic groups, Mumford's GIT and some of the challenges that the non-reductive setting presents. The earlier work of two of the authors in the setting of unipotent group a…
We give an algebro-geometric classification of smooth real affine algebraic surfaces endowed with an effective action of the real algebraic circle group $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to equivariant isomorphisms. As an application, we show that every compact differentiable surface endowed with an action of the circle $S^1$ admits a unique smooth rational real quasi-projective model up to $\mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant birational diffeomorphism.
We show that every action of a smooth algebraic group on a variety admits a normal projective model. Along the way, we present new proofs of some basic results on algebraic transformation groups, including Weil's regularization theorem.
Let $(M,ω_M)$ be a monotone or negatively monotone symplectic manifold, or a Weinstein manifold. One can construct an "action" of $H^1(M,\mathbb{G}_m)$ on the Fukaya category (wrapped Fukaya category in the exact case) that reflects the action of $Symp^0(M,ω_M)$ on the set of Lagrangian branes. A priori this action is only analytic. The purpose of this work is to show the algebraicity of this action under some assumptions. We use this to prove a tameness result for the sheaf of Lagrangian Floer homology groups obtained by moving one of the Lagrangians via global symplectic isotopies. We also s…
We obtain a version of the theorem of the square and a local structure result for actions of connected algebraic groups on seminormal varieties in characteristic 0, and arbitrary varieties in positive characteristics.
Let $G$ be a connected algebraic $k$-group acting on a normal $k$-variety, where $k$ is a field. We show that $X$ is covered by open $G$-stable quasi-projective subvarieties; moreover, any such subvariety admits an equivariant embedding into the projectivization of a $G$-linearized vector bundle on an abelian variety, quotient of $G$. This generalizes a classical result of Sumihiro for actions of smooth connected affine algebraic groups.
We provide a complete description of normal affine varieties with effective algebraic torus action in terms of what we call proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties. Our theory extends classical cone constructions of Dolgachev, Demazure and Pinkham to the multigraded case, and it comprises the theory of affine toric varieties.
Given an action of an affine algebraic group with only trivial characters on a factorial variety, we ask for categorical quotients. We characterize existence in the category of algebraic varieties. Moreover, allowing constructible sets as quotients, we obtain a more general existence result which, for example, settles the case of a finitely generated algebra of invariants. As an application, we provide a combinatorial GIT-type construction of categorial quotients for actions on, e.g. complete varieties with finitely generated Cox ring via lifting to the characteristic space.
We formalize and study several competing notions of versality for an action of a linear algebraic group on an algebraic variety X. Our main result is that these notions of versality are equivalent to various statements concerning rational points on twisted forms of X (existence of rational points, existence of a dense set of rational points, etc.) We give applications of this equivalence in both directions, to study versality of group actions and rational points on algebraic varieties. We obtain similar results on p-versality for a prime integer p. An appendix, containing a letter from J.-P. S…
For a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$, a divisor in general position of degree $g+1$ is given by polynomial equations. There is an action from an algebraic group on the representations of divisors by polynomials which fixes divisor classes. This structure reduces the question of rationality of divisor classes to rationality of polynomials which is more easy to control.
We extend the $\hat U$-theorem for projective varieties proved in arXiv:1601.00340 and arXiv:1607.04181 to projective schemes over $\mathbb C$. The condition "ss=s" required in arXiv:1601.00340 and arXiv:1607.04181 is reformulated algebraically for our setting. We also describe a blowing up for the condition "ss=s". Different from the sequence of blowing ups in arXiv:1607.04181 , we can get "ss=s" in one blowing up.
Let $X$ be a smooth contractible affine algebraic threefold with a nontrivial algebraic ${\bf C}_+$-action on it. We show that $X$ is rational and the algebraic quotient $X//{\bf C}_+$ is a smooth contractible surface $S$ which is isomorphic to ${\bf C}^2$ in the case when $X$ admits a dominant morphism from a threefold of form $C \times {\bf C}^2$. Furthermore, if the action is free then $X$ is isomorphic to $S \times {\bf C}$ and the action is induced by translation on the second factor. In particular, we have the following criterion: if a smooth contractible affine algebraic threefold $X$ w…
Given a suitable action on a complex projective variety X of a non-reductive affine algebraic group H, this paper considers how to choose a reductive group G containing H and a projective completion of G x_H X which is a reductive envelope in the sense of math.AG/0703131. In particular it studies the family of examples given by moduli spaces of hypersurfaces in the weighted projective plane P(1,1,2) obtained as quotients by linear actions of the (non-reductive) automorphism group of P(1,1,2).
We show the existence of an equivariant weight filtration on the equivariant homology of real algebraic varieties equipped with a finite group action, by applying group homology onto the weight complex of McCrory and Parusiński. The group action enriches the information contained in the induced equivariant weight spectral sequence from which we can not extract finite additivity directly if the group is of even order. Still, we manage to construct additive invariants from its elementary bricks, and prove that they are induced from the very equivariant geometry of real algebraic varieties with a…
We obtain a global resolution for the sheaf of differential operators on smooth geometric quotients of free linear actions of algebraic groups. The terms of our resolution involve symmetric and alternating powers of vector bundles easily constructed geometrically from the algebraic group and the vector space on which it acts.
Let X' be a smooth contractible three-dimensional affine algebraic variety with a free algebraic C_+ -action on it such that S =X'// C_+ is smooth. We prove that X' is isomorphic to $S \times \C$ and the action is induced by a translation on the second factor. As a consequence we show that any free algebraic C_+ -action on C^3 is a translation in a suitable coordinate system.
Let $X$ be a 3-dimensional affine variety with a faithful action of a 2-dimensional torus $T$. Then the space of first order infinitesimal deformations $T^1(X)$ is graded by the characters of $T$, and the zeroth graded component $T^1(X)_0$ consists of all equivariant first order (infinitesimal) deformations. Suppose that using the construction of such varieties from [1], one can obtain $X$ from a proper polyhedral divisor $\mathscr D$ on $\mathbb P^1$ such that the tail cone of (any of) the used polyhedra is pointed and full-dimensional, and all vertices of all polyhedra are lattice points. Th…
Given a faithful action of a finite group on an algebraic curve of genus at least 2, we prove that the induced action on the space of global holomorphic differentials is faithful as well, except in the following very special case: the given action is not tame, the genus of the quotient curve is 0 and the characteristic of the base field is 2.
In recent years, various notions of algebraic independence have emerged as a central and unifying theme in a number of areas of applied mathematics, including algebraic statistics and the rigidity theory of bar-and-joint frameworks. In each of these settings the fundamental problem is to determine the extent to which certain unknowns depend algebraically on given data. This has, in turn, led to a resurgence of interest in algebraic matroids, which are the combinatorial formalism for algebraic (in)dependence. We give a self-contained introduction to algebraic matroids together with examples hig…
Expansive algebraic Z^d-actions corresponding to ideals are characterized by the property that the complex variety of the ideal is disjoint from the multiplicative unit torus. For such actions it is known that the limit for the growth rate of periodic points exists and equals the entropy of the action. We extend this result to actions for which the complex variety intersects the multiplicative torus in a finite set. The main technical tool is the use of homoclinic points which decay rapidly enough to be summable.
We extend the definition of algebraic entropy to endomorphisms of affine varieties. We calculate algebraic entropy of the action of elements of mapping class groups on various character varieties, and show that it is equal to a quantity we call the spectral radius, a generalization of the dilatation of a Pseudo-Anosov mapping class. Our calculations are compatible with all known calculations of the topological entropy of this action.
In a work of T. Saito, the action of algebraic correspondences on the etale cohomology of varieties over local fields with semistable reduction is related to correspondences on smaller strata via weight spectral sequences. We give an intersection theoretic construction of these correspondences. Under a finiteness condition this enables us to compute them without involving the blow-ups of products, and prove their compatibility with compositions. These features are essential for the application to Shimura varieties.
A general framework for investigating topological actions of $Z^d$ on compact metric spaces was proposed by Boyle and Lind in terms of expansive behavior along lower-dimensional subspaces of $R^d$. Here we completely describe this expansive behavior for the class of algebraic $Z^d$-actions given by commuting automorphisms of compact abelian groups. The description uses the logarithmic image of an algebraic variety together with a directional version of Noetherian modules over the ring of Laurent polynomials in several commuting variables. We introduce two notions of rank for topological $Z^d$-…
Let Z be an algebraic space of finite type over a field, equipped with an action of the multiplicative group $G_m$. In this situation we define and study a certain algebraic space equipped with an unramified morphism to $A^1\times Z\times Z$, where $A^1$ is the affine line. (If Z is affine and smooth this is just the closure of the graph of the action map $G_m\times Z\to Z$.) In articles joint with D.Gaitsgory we use this set-up to prove a new result in the geometric theory of automorphic forms and to give a new proof of a very important theorem of T. Braden.
In the theory of algebraic group actions on affine varieties, the concept of a Kempf-Ness set is used to replace the categorical quotient by the quotient with respect to a maximal compact subgroup. By making use of the recent achievements of "toric topology" we show that an appropriate notion of a Kempf-Ness set exists for a class of algebraic torus actions on quasiaffine varieties (coordinate subspace arrangement complements) arising in the Batyrev-Cox "geometric invariant theory" approach to toric varieties. We proceed by studying the cohomology of these "toric" Kempf-Ness sets. In the case …
We introduce an explicit method for studying actions of a group stack G on an algebraic stack X. As an example, we study in detail the case where X=P(n_0,...,n_r) is a weighted projective stack over an arbitrary base S. To this end, we give an explicit description of the group stack of automorphisms of, the weighted projective general linear 2-group PGL(n_0,...,n_r). As an application, we use a result of Colliot-Thelene to show that for every linear algebraic group G over an arbitrary base field k (assumed to be reductive if char(k)>0) such that Pic}(G)=0, every action of G on P(n_0,...,n_r) l…
In this paper, for any Milnor hypersurface we find the largest dimension of effective algebraic torus actions on it. The proof of the corresponding theorem is based on the computation of the automorphism group for any Milnor hypersurface. We find all generalised Buchstaber-Ray and Ray hypersurfaces that are toric varieties. We compute the Betti numbers of these hypersurfaces and describe their integral singular cohomology rings in terms of the cohomology of the corresponding ambient varieties.
