We prove a decomposition theorem for the equivariant K-theory of actions of affine group schemes G of finite type over a field on regular separated noetherian algebraic spaces, under the hypothesis that the actions have finite geometric stabilizers and satisfy a rationality condition together with a technical condition which holds e.g. for G abelian or smooth. We describe in an Appendix various complicial bi-Waldhausen categories (in Thomason's terminology) modelling the equivariant K-theory of regular noetherian separated algebraic spaces.
This is the second of two papers treating faithful actions of simple algebraic groups on irreducible modules and on the associated Grassmannian varieties; in the first paper we considered the module itself and its projective space, while here we handle the varieties comprising the subspaces of the module of fixed dimension greater than one. By explicit calculation, we show that in each case, with essentially one exception, there is a dense open subset any point of which has stabilizer conjugate to a fixed subgroup, called the generic stabilizer. We provide tables listing generic stabilizers in…
We develop different formulas of algebraic and/or arithmetic nature allowing an explicit calculation, both over a finite field and over a field of characteristic 0, of the algebraic part of the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space G\G' under a semisiple simply connected linear group G' with finite stabilizer G. We also give examples of the calculations that can be done with these formulas.
We describe the recursive algorithmic procedure to compute the stabilizers of the group of complex orthogonal matrices with respect to the action of similarity on the set of all symmetric matrices. Futhermore, lower bounds for dimensions of the stabilizers for the action of orthogonal $*$-conjugation on Hermitian matrices are obtained. We also prove a result that completes the classification of normal forms of Hermitian matrices under orthogonal $*$-conjugation. A key step in our proof is to solve a certain block matrix equation with Toeplitz blocks. These results are then applied to provide a…
The stabilizer code is the most general algebraic construction of quantum error-correcting codes proposed so far. A stabilizer code can be constructed from a self-orthogonal subspace of a symplectic space over a finite field. We propose a construction method of such a self-orthogonal space using an algebraic curve. By using the proposed method we construct an asymptotically good sequence of binary stabilizer codes. As a byproduct we improve the Ashikhmin-Litsyn-Tsfasman bound of quantum codes. The main results in this paper can be understood without knowledge of quantum mechanics.
It is shown that the main result of N. R. Wallach, Principal orbit type theorems for reductive algebraic group actions and the Kempf--Ness Theorem, arXiv:1811.07195v1 (17 Nov 2018) is a special case of a more general statement, which can be deduced, using a short argument, from the classical Richardson and Luna theorems.
According to Racinet's work, the scheme of double shuffle and regularization relations between cyclotomic analogues of multiple zeta values has the structure of a torsor over a pro-unipotent $\mathbb Q$-algebraic group $\sf{DMR}_0$, which is an algebraic subgroup of a pro-unipotent $\mathbb Q$-algebraic group of outer automorphisms of a free Lie algebra. We show that the harmonic (stuffle) coproduct of double shuffle theory may be viewed as an element of a module over the above group, and that $\sf{DMR}_0$ identifies with the stabilizer of this element. We identify the tangent space at origin …
We prove that every algebraic stack, locally of finite type over an algebraically closed field with affine stabilizers, is étale-locally a quotient stack in a neighborhood of a point with a linearly reductive stabilizer group. The proof uses an equivariant version of Artin's algebraization theorem proved in the appendix. We provide numerous applications of the main theorems.
We show that if a flat group scheme acts properly, with finite stabilizers, on an algebraic space, then a quotient exists as a separated algebraic space. More generally we show any flat groupid for which the family of stabilizers is finite has a uniform geometric, uniform categorical quotient in the category of algebraic spaces. Our argument is elementary and essentially self contained.
We describe the local structure of an irreducible algebraic monoid $M$ at an idempotent element $e$. When $e$ is minimal, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over the kernel $MeM$ (a homogeneous space) with fibre the two-sided stabilizer $M_e$ (a connected affine monoid having a zero element and a dense unit group). This yields the irreducibility of stabilizers and centralizers of idempotents when $M$ is normal, and criteria for normality and smoothness of an arbitrary $M$. Also, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over an abelian variety, with fiber a connected affine monoid having a de…
We present an abelianization of the permutation action of the symmetric group S_n on R^n in analogy to the Batyrev abelianization construction for finite group actions on complex manifolds. The abelianization is provided by a particular De Concini-Procesi wonderful model for the braid arrangement. In fact, we show a stronger result, namely that stabilizers of points in the arrangement model are isomorphic to direct products of Z_2. To prove that, we develop a combinatorial framework for explicitly describing the stabilizers in terms of automorphism groups of set diagrams over families of cubes…
In this paper nondegenerate multidimensional matrices of boundary format in $V_0 \otimes ... \otimes V_p$ are investigated by their link with Steiner vector bundles on product of projective spaces. For any nondegenerate matrix $A$ the stabilizer for the $SL(V_0)\times ... \times SL(V_p)$-action, $Stab(A)$, is completely described. In particular we prove that there exists an explicit action of SL(2) on $V_0 \otimes ... \otimes V_p$ such that $Stab(A)^0\subseteq SL(2)$ and the equality holds if and only if $A$ belongs to a unique $SL(V_0)\times >... \times SL(V_p)$-orbit containing the identity …
For all spherical homogeneous spaces G/H, where G is a simply connected semisimple algebraic group and H a connected solvable subgroup of G, we compute the spectra of the representations of G on spaces of regular sections of homogeneous line bundles over G/H.
We construct a canonical stabilizer reduction $\widetilde{X}$ for any derived $1$-algebraic stack $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ as a sequence of derived Kirwan blow-ups, under mild natural conditions that include the existence of a good moduli space for the classical truncation $X_{\mathrm{cl}}$. Our construction has several desired features: it naturally generalizes Kirwan's classical partial desingularization algorithm to the context of derived algebraic geometry, preserves quasi-smoothness, and is a derived enhancement of the intrinsic stabilizer reduction constructed by Kiem, Li and the third auth…
We present a complete generalization of Kirwan's partial desingularization theorem on quotients of smooth varieties. Precisely, we prove that if $\mathcal{X}$ is an irreducible Artin stack with stable good moduli space $\mathcal{X} \to X$, then there is a canonical sequence of birational morphisms of Artin stacks $\mathcal{X}_n \to \mathcal{X}_{n-1} \to \ldots \to \mathcal{X}_0 = \mathcal{X}$ with the following properties: (1) the maximum dimension of a stabilizer of a point of $\mathcal{X}_{k+1}$ is strictly smaller than the maximum dimension of a stabilizer of $\mathcal{X}_k$ and the final s…
After a general discussion of group actions, orbifolds, and "weak orbifolds" this note will provide elementary introductions to two basic moduli spaces over the real or complex numbers: First the moduli space of effective divisors with finite stabilizer on the projective space ${\mathbb P}^1$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_2$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^1$; and then the moduli space of effective 1-cycles with finite stabilizer on ${\mathbb P}^2$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_3$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^2$.
We say that a group is anti-solvable if all of its composition factors are non-abelian. We consider a particular family of anti-solvable finite groups containing the simple alternating groups for $n\neq 6$ and all 26 sporadic simple groups. We prove that, if $K$ is a perfect field and $X$ is a homogeneous space of a smooth algebraic $K$-group $G$ with finite geometric stabilizers lying in this family, then $X$ is dominated by a $G$-torsor. In particular, if $G=\mathrm{SL}_n$, all such homogeneous spaces have rational points.
We establish Tannaka duality for noetherian algebraic stacks with affine stabilizer groups. Our main application is the existence of Hom-stacks in great generality.
We study the $J_b(F)$-action on the set of top-dimensional irreducible components of affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian. We show that the stabilizer of any such component is a parahoric subgroup of $J_b(F)$ of maximal volume, verifying a conjecture of X.~Zhu. As an application, we give a description of the set of top-dimensional irreducible components in the basic locus of Shimura varieties.
In these notes we present a corrected version of the algorithm for abelianization of stabilizers of finite group actions on smooth manifolds using equivariant blow ups.
Let $k$ be a field. We characterize the group schemes $G$ over $k$, not necessarily affine, such that $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(B_kG)$ is compactly generated. We also describe the algebraic stacks that have finite cohomological dimension in terms of their stabilizer groups.
We prove a localization formula in equivariant algebraic $K$-theory for an arbitrary complex algebraic group acting with finite stabilizer on a smooth algebraic space. This extends to non-diagonalizable groups the localization formulas H.A. Nielsen in equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles and R.W. Thomason for higher $K$-theory of equivariant coherent sheaves. As an application we give a Riemann-Roch formula for quotients of smooth algebraic spaces by proper group actions. This formula extends previous work of B. Toen for stacks with quasi-projective moduli spaces and the authors for quotie…
We study the K-theory of actions of diagonalizable group schemes on noetherian regular separated algebraic spaces: our main result shows how to reconstruct the K-theory ring of such an action from the K-theory rings of the loci where the stabilizers have constant dimension. We apply this to the calculation of the equivariant K-theory of toric varieties, and give conditions under which the Merkurjev spectral sequence degenerates, so that the equivariant K-theory ring determines the ordinary K-theory ring. We also prove a very refined localization theorem for actions of this type.
We compute the étale cohomology groups H^i(X,G_m) in several cases, where X is a smooth tame Deligne-Mumford stack of dimension 1 over an algebraically closed field. We have complete results for orbicurves (and, more generally, for twisted nodal curves) and in the case all stabilizers are cyclic; we give some partial results and examples in the general case. In particular we show that if the stabilizers are abelian then H^2(X, G_m) does not depend on X but only on the underlying orbicurve and on the generic stabilizer.
Let k be a field, G a smooth connected linear algebraic group and X a homogeneous space of G over k, such that the geometric stabilizers are extensions of a smooth group of multiplicative type by a smooth connected characterfree group. If k has characteristic zero and if X^c is a smooth compactification of X over k, we obtain a formula for the algebraic Brauer group of X^c. Several variants are obtained in positive characteristic p, including the finite field case and the global field case, where the formulae describe the prime-to-p part of the algebraic unramified Brauer group of X, without a…
We consider the action of the group $\mathrm{PGL}_4(K)$ on the smooth cubic surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3_K$ ($K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero). We classify, in an explicit way, all the smooth cubic surfaces with non trivial stabilizer, the corresponding stabilizers and obtain a geometric description of each group in terms of permutations of the Eckardt points, of the $27$ lines or of the $45$ tritangent planes.
A group action on a smooth variety provides it with the natural stratification by irreducible components of the fixed point sets of arbitrary subgroups. We show that the corresponding maximal wonderful blowup in the sense of MacPherson-Procesi has only abelian stabilizers. The result is inspired by the abelianization algorithm of Batyrev.
For $n\ge5$, it is well known that the moduli space $\mathfrak{M_{0,\:n}}$ of unordered $n$ points on the Riemann sphere is a quotient space of the Zariski open set $K_n$ of $\mathbb C^{n-3}$ by an $S_n$ action. The stabilizers of this $S_n$ action at certain points of this Zariski open set $K_n$ correspond to the groups fixing the sets of $n$ points on the Riemann sphere. Let $α$ be a subset of $n$ distinct points on the Riemann sphere. We call the group of all linear fractional transformations leaving $α$ invariant the stabilizer of $α$, which is finite by observation. For each non-trivial f…
Let π: X -> S be a morphism of algebraic stacks that is locally of finite presentation with affine stabilizers. We prove that there is an algebraic S-stack, the Hilbert stack, parameterizing proper algebraic stacks mapping quasi-finitely to X. This was previously unknown, even for a morphism of schemes.
Let G be a connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p (possibly 0), and X a variety on which G acts transitively with connected stabilizers. We show that any étale Galois cover of X of degree prime to p is also homogeneous, and that the maximal prime-to-p quotient of the étale fundamental group of X is commutative. We moreover obtain an explicit bound for the number of topological generators of the said quotient. When G is commutative, we also obtain a description of the prime-to-p torsion in the Brauer group of G.
Racinet studied the scheme associated with the double shuffle and regularization relations between multiple polylogarithm values at $N^{th}$ roots of unity and constructed a group scheme attached to the situation; he also showed it to be the specialization for $G=μ_N$ of a group scheme $\mathsf{DMR}_0^G$ attached to a finite abelian group $G$. Then, Enriquez and Furusho proved that $\mathsf{DMR}_0^G$ can be essentially identified with the stabilizer of a coproduct element arising in Racinet's theory with respect to the action of a group of automorphisms of a free Lie algebra attached to $G$. W…
We develop a theory of unbounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on algebraic stacks. In particular, we show that these categories are compactly generated by perfect complexes for stacks that either have finite stabilizers or are local quotient stacks. We also extend Toën and Antieau--Gepner's results on derived Azumaya algebras and compact generation of sheaves on linear categories from derived schemes to derived Deligne--Mumford stacks. These are all consequences of our main theorem: compact generation of a presheaf of triangulated categories on an algebraic stack is local for t…
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack which is generically a scheme and has quasi-projective coarse moduli. If $\mathcal{X}$ has elementary Abelian 2-group stabilizers and the coarse moduli of the inertia stack is smooth, we show there exists a semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of $\mathcal{X}$ where the pieces are equivalent to the derived category of the components of the coarse moduli of the inertia stack.
We investigate the algebras of invariants and the properties of the quotient morphism by an action of a finite group scheme in terms of stabilizers of points.

Let $X$ be a homogeneous space of a connected linear algebraic group $G$ defined over the field of complex numbers $\mathbb C$. Let $x\in X({\mathbb C})$ be a point. We denote by $H$ the stabilizer of $x$ in $G$. When $H$ is connected, we compute the topological fundamental group $π_1^{\rm top}(X({\mathbb C}),x)$. Moreover, we compute the second homotopy group $π_2^{\rm top}(X({\mathbb C}),x)$.
We describe the stabilizers of points in the Bruhat-Tits building of the group SL with tropical geometry. There are several compactifications of this building associated to algebraic representations of SL. We show that the fans used to compactify apartments in this theory are given by tropical Schur polynomials.
Let X be a homogeneous space of a quasi-trivial k-group G, with geometric stabilizer H, over a number field k. We prove that under certain conditions on the character group of H, certain algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation vanish, because the abelian groups where they take values vanish. When H is connected or abelian, these algebraic Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation are the only ones, so we prove the Hasse principle and weak approximation for X under certain conditions. As an application, we obtain new suffic…
