In these notes we present a corrected version of the algorithm for abelianization of stabilizers of finite group actions on smooth manifolds using equivariant blow ups.
Let $π: Z \ra X$ be a Galois covering of smooth projective curves with Galois group the Weyl group of a simple and simply-connected Lie group $G$. For any dominant weight $λ$ consider the curve $Y = Z/\Stab(λ)$. The Kanev correspondence defines an abelian subvariety $P_λ$ of the Jacobian of $Y$. We compute the type of the polarization of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $\Jac(Y)$ to $P_λ$ in some cases. In particular, in the case of the group $E_8$ we obtain families of Prym-Tyurin varieties. The main idea is the use of an abelianization map of the Donagi-Prym variety…
Let G be a connected algebraic group and let [G,G] be its commutator subgroup. We prove a conjecture of Drinfeld about the existence of a connected etale group cover H of [G,G], characterized by the following properties: every central extension of G, by a finite etale group scheme, splits over H, and the commutator map of G lifts to H. We prove, moreover, that the quotient stack of G by the natural action of H is the universal Deligne-Mumford Picard stack to which G maps.
We present an abelianization of the permutation action of the symmetric group S_n on R^n in analogy to the Batyrev abelianization construction for finite group actions on complex manifolds. The abelianization is provided by a particular De Concini-Procesi wonderful model for the braid arrangement. In fact, we show a stronger result, namely that stabilizers of points in the arrangement model are isomorphic to direct products of Z_2. To prove that, we develop a combinatorial framework for explicitly describing the stabilizers in terms of automorphism groups of set diagrams over families of cubes…
A group action on a smooth variety provides it with the natural stratification by irreducible components of the fixed point sets of arbitrary subgroups. We show that the corresponding maximal wonderful blowup in the sense of MacPherson-Procesi has only abelian stabilizers. The result is inspired by the abelianization algorithm of Batyrev.
We provide abelianizations of differentiable actions of finite groups on smooth real manifolds. De Concini-Procesi wonderful models for (local) subspace arrangements and a careful analysis of linear actions on real vector spaces are at the core of our construction. In fact, we show that our abelianizations have stabilizers isomorphic to elementary abelian 2-groups, a setting for which we suggest the term digitalization. As our main examples, we discuss the resulting digitalizations of the permutation actions of the symmetric group on real linear and projective spaces.
We consider the moduli space of stable principal G-bundles over a compact Riemann surface C of genus >1, with G a reductive algebraic group. We explicitly construct a map F from the generic fibre of the Hitchin map to a generalized Prym variety associated to a suitable Galois covering of C. The map F has finite fibres. In case G=PGl(2) one can check that the generic fibre of F is a principal homogeneous space with respect to a product of 2d-2 copies of Z/2Z where d is the degree of the canonical bundle over C. However in case the Dynkin diagram of G does not contain components of type $B_{n}$ …
We prove a quantum version of the localization formula of Witten that relates invariants of a git quotient with the equivariant invariants of the action. Using the formula we prove a quantum version of an abelianization formula of S. Martin relating invariants of geometric invariant theory quotients by a group and its maximal torus, conjectured by Bertram, Ciocan-Fontanine, and Kim. By similar techniques we prove a quantum Lefschetz principle for holomorphic symplectic reductions. As an application, we give a formula for the fundamental solution to the quantum differential equation (qde) for t…
We use the theory of canonical models of Shimura varieties to describe the projective limit of the curves Y(N), all N, and its automorphism group. In particular we prove that the Galois group of Q(CM) over Q is an extension of a certain abelian group by a 2-element group, where Q(CM) stands for the the extension of Q by all the CM-points on all the curves Y(N).
We classify the canonical threefold singularities that allow an effective two-torus action. This extends classification results of Mori on terminal threefold singularities and of Ishida and Iwashita on toric canonical threefold singularities. Our classification relies on lattice point emptiness of certain polytopal complexes with rational vertices. Scaling the polytopes by the least common multiple $k$ of the respective denominators, we investigate $k$-emptiness of polytopes with integer vertices. We show that two dimensional $k$-empty polytopes either are sporadic or come in series given by F…
For a normal subvariety $V$ of ${\bf C}^n$ with a good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give a simple characterization for when it has only log canonical, log terminal or rational singularities. Moreover we are able to give formulas for the plurigenera of isolated singular points of such varieties and of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of $V\backslash \{0\}$. For this purpose we introduce sheaves of $m$-canonical and $L^{2,m}$-canonical forms on normal complex spaces. For the case of affine varieties with good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give an explicit formula for these sheaves in terms of the grading of t…
We classify all the surfaces of general type whose canonical map is composed with a pencil if they are the quotient of the diagonal action by an Abelian group acting over the product of two curves. As far as we know all the previous examples with isotrivial canonical map are very particular cases of our construction; moreover we find an unexpected action by a group of order 16. This construction can be easily generalizable to all dimensions.
We prove structure theorems for the moduli stack of elliptic curves equipped with $G$-structures, where $G$ is a finite 2-generated metabelian group. In particular, we show that if $G$ has exponent $e$, then there is a subgroup $H\le GL_2(\mathbb{Z}/e)$ such that $G$-structures on elliptic curves $E$ are equivalent to "congruence structures of level $H$". Our methods are almost entirely group theoretic. Let $\widehat{M}$ denote the free profinite metabelian group of rank 2, then along the way we prove a decomposition of $Out(\widehat{M})$ as an internal semi-direct product of the subgroup of "…
The automorphism group of the Galois covering induced by a pluri-canonical generic covering of a projective space is investigated. It is shown that by means of such coverings one obtains, in dimensions one and two, serieses of specific actions of the symmetric groups $S_d$ on curves and surfaces not deformable to an action of $S_d$ which is not the full automorphism group. As an application, new DIF $\ne$ DEF examples for $G$-varieties in complex and real geometry are given.
Working over a ground field of characteristic zero, this paper studies the quotient morphism $π:X\to Y$ for an affine $\mathbb{G}_a$-variety $X$ with affine quotient $Y$. It is shown that the degree modules associated to the $\mathbb{G}_a$-action give a uniquely determined sequence of dominant $\mathbb{G}_a$-equivariant morphisms, $X=X_r\to X_{r-1}\to\cdots\to X_1\to X_0=Y$, where $X_i$ is an affine $\mathbb{G}_a$-variety and $X_{i+1}\to X_i$ is birational for each $i\ge 1$. This is the canonical factorization of $π$. We give an algorithm for finding the degree modules associated to the given …
In this note we present examples of complex algebraic surfaces of general type with canonical maps of degree $10$, $11$ and $14$. They are constructed as quotients of a product of two Fermat septics using certain free actions of the group $\mathbb Z_7^2$.
Generalising toric geometry we study compact varieties admitting lower dimensional torus actions. In particular we describe divisors on them in terms of convex geometry and give a criterion for their ampleness. These results may be used to study Fano varieties with small torus actions. As a first result we classify log del Pezzo C*-surfaces of Picard number 1 and Gorenstein index less than 4. In further examples we show how classification might work in higher dimensions and we give explicit descriptions of some equivariant smoothings of Fano threefolds.

The automorphism group of a curve is studied from the viewpoint of the canonical embedding and Petri's theorem. A criterion for identifying the automorphism group as an algebraic subgroup the general linear group is given. Furthermore the action of the automorphism group is extended to an action of the minimal free resolution of the canonical ring of the curve $X$.
We consider the canonical action of the compact torus $T^4$ on the Grassmann manifold $G_{4,2}$ and prove that the orbit space $G_{4,2}/T^4$ is homeomorphic to the sphere $S^5$. We prove that the induced differentiable structure on $S^5$ is not the smooth one and describe the smooth and the singular points. We also consider the action of $T^4$ on $CP^5$ induced by the composition of the second symmetric power $T^4\subset T^6$ and the standard action of $T^6$ on $CP^5$ and prove that the orbit space $CP^5/T^4$ is homeomorphic to the join $CP^2\ast S^2$. The Plücker embedding $G_{4,2}\subset CP^…
We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingredient is t…
We consider multidimensional arrays with at most 27 entries over the field with two elements, and their equivalence classes for the action of the direct product of general linear groups. The possible 3-dimensional formats are p x 2 x 2 (p = 2, ..., 6), p x 3 x 2 (p = 3, 4), and 3 x 3 x 3; the possible 4-dimensional formats are p x 2 x 2 x 2 (p = 2, 3). In each case, we compute the orbits for the group action, and then we determine the rank of each orbit. In particular, we determine the maximum rank for these arrays over F_2.
