We prove that, from an Einstein manifold of dimension greater than or equal to five, there are just two types of harmonic morphism with one-dimensional fibres. This generalizes a result of R.L. Bryant who obtained the same conclusion under the assumption that the domain has constant curvature.
We classify the harmonic morphisms with one-dimensional fibres (1) from real-analytic conformally-flat Riemannian manifolds of dimension at least four, and (2) between conformally-flat Riemannian manifolds of dimensions at least three.
We introduce a general notion of twistorial map and classify twistorial harmonic morphisms with one-dimensional fibres from self-dual four-manifolds. Such maps can be characterised as those which pull back Abelian monopoles to self-dual connections. In fact, the constructions involve solving a generalised monopole equation, and also the Beltrami fields equation of hydrodynamics, and lead to constructions of self-dual metrics.
The general problem for consistency between arbitrary transports along paths in fibre bundles and bundle morphisms between them is formulated and investigated. The special case of one fibre bundle, its morphism and transport along paths acting in it is considered. The consistency between linear transports along paths in a vector bundle and a Hermitian structure in it is studied.
We prove that harmonic morphisms preserve the Jacobi operator along harmonic maps. We apply this result to prove infinitesimal and local rigidity (in the sense of Toth) of harmonic morphisms to a sphere.
f-Harmonic maps were first introduced and studied by Lichnerowicz in \cite{Li} (see also Section 10.20 in Eells-Lemaire's report \cite{EL}). In this paper, we study a subclass of f-harmonic maps called f-harmonic morphisms which pull back local harmonic functions to local f-harmonic functions. We prove that a map between Riemannian manifolds is an f-harmonic morphism if and only if it is a horizontally weakly conformal f-harmonic map. This generalizes the well-known Fuglede-Ishihara characterization for harmonic morphisms. Some properties and many examples as well as some non-existence of f-ha…
Harmonic morphisms are maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to harmonic functions. These maps are characterized as horizontally weakly conformal harmonic maps and they have many interesting links and applications to several areas in mathematics (see the book by Baird and Wood for details). In this paper, we study generalized harmonic morphisms which are defined to be maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to biharmonic functions. We obtain some characterizations of generalized harmonic morphisms into a Euclidean space and give two met…
Pseudo-harmonic morphisms give rise on the domain space to a distribution which admits an almost complex structure compatible with the given Riemannian metric. We shall show that this property, together with the harmonicity, are preserved by a biconformal change of the domain metric. The special case of the pseudo-horizontally homothetic harmonic morphisms is also treated.
We present a new method for manufacturing complex-valued harmonic morphisms from a wide class of Riemannian Lie groups. This yields new solutions from an important family of homogeneous Hadamard manifolds. We also give a new method for constructing left-invariant foliations on a large class of Lie groups producing harmonic morphisms
We apply the method of eigenfamilies to construct new explicit complex-valued p-harmonic functions on the non-compact classical Lie groups, equipped with their natural semi-Riemannian metrics. We then employ this same approach to manufacture explicit complex-valued harmonic morphisms on these groups.
We consider four dimensional Lie groups with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. For such groups we classify left-invariant conformal foliations with minimal leaves of codimension two. These foliations produce local complex-valued harmonic morphisms.
In this paper we generalize harmonic maps and morphisms to the \emph{degenerate semi-Riemannian category}, in the case when the manifolds $M$ and $N$ are \emph{stationary} and the map $ϕ:M\to N$ is \emph{radical-preserving}. We characterize geometrically the notion of \emph{(generalized) horizontal (weak) conformality} and we obtain a characterization for (generalized) harmonic morphisms in terms of (generalized) harmonic maps.
We prove local existence of complex-valued harmonic morphisms from any Riemannian homogeneous spaces of positive curvature, except the Berger space Sp(2)/SU(2).
We consider 5-dimensional Lie groups with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. For such groups we give a partial classification of left-invariant conformal foliations with minimal leaves of codimension 2. These foliations produce local complex-valued harmonic morphisms.
An infinite family of distinct harmonic morphisms with minimal circle fibers from the 7-dimensional homogeneous Allof-Wallach spaces of positive curvature onto the 6-dimensional flag manifolds is given.
We prove that any (real or complex) analytic horizontally conformal submersion from a three-dimensional conformal manifold M to a two-dimensional conformal manifold N can be, locally, `extended' to a unique harmonic morphism from the heaven space of M to N.
We show that under some non-degeneracy assumption the only submersive harmonic morphism on a conformally flat $3-$sphere is the Hopf fibration. The proof involves an appropriate use the Chern-Simons functional.
We study the soliton flow on the domain of a twistorial harmonic morphism between Riemannian manifolds of dimensions four and three. Assuming real-analyticity, we prove that, for the Gibbons-Hawking construction, any soliton flow is uniquely determined by its restriction to any local section of the corresponding harmonic morphism. For the Beltrami fields construction, we identify a contour integral whose vanishing characterises the trivial soliton flows.
We investigate horizontal conformality of a differential of a map between Riemannian manifolds where the tangent bundles are equipped with Cheeger--Gromoll type metrics. As a corollary, we characterize the differential of a map as a harmonic morphism.
In this paper we give a positive answer to the open existence problem for complex-valued harmonic morphisms from the non-compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces $SL_n(R)/SO(n)$, $SU^*(2n)/Sp(n)$ and their compact duals $SU(n)/SO(n)$ and $SU(2n)/Sp(n)$. Furthermore we prove the existence of globally defined, complex-valued harmonic morphisms from any Riemannian symmetric space of type IV.
We study the curvature of a manifold on which there can be defined a complex-valued submersive harmonic morphism with either, totally geodesic fibers or that is holomorphic with respect to a complex structure which is compatible with the second fundamental form. We also give a necessary curvature condition for the existence of complex-valued harmonic morphisms with totally geodesic fibers on Einstein manifolds.
In this paper we give a unified framework for the construction of complex valued harmonic morphisms from the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians and their non-compact duals. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding open existence problem in the real and quaternionic cases.
In this work we construct a variety of new complex-valued proper biharmonic maps and (2,1)-harmonic morphisms on Riemannian manifolds with non-trivial geometry. These are solutions to a non-linear system of partial differential equations depending on the geometric data of the manifolds involved.
In this paper we construct a new family of harmonic morphisms $φ:V^5\to\s^2$, where $V^5$ is a 5-dimensional open manifold contained in an ellipsoidal hypersurface of $\c^4=\r^8$. These harmonic morphisms admit a continuous extension to the completion ${V^{\ast}}^5$, which turns out to be an explicit real algebraic variety. We work in the context of a generalization of the Hopf construction and equivariant theory.
We introduce the natural notion of (p,q)-harmonic morphisms between Riemannian manifolds. This unifies several theories that have been studied during the last decades. We then study the special case when the maps involved are complex-valued. For these we find a characterisation and provide new non-trivial examples in important cases.
We construct a family of Hermitian metrics on the Hopf surface $ \mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{S}^1$, whose fundamental classes represent distinct cohomology classes in the Aeppli cohomology group. These metrics are locally conformally Kähler. Among the toric fibres of $π:\mathbb{S}^{3} \times \mathbb{S}^1\to\mathbb{C} P^1$ two of them are stable minimal surfaces and each of the two has a neighbourhood so that fibres therein are given by stable harmonic maps from 2-torus and outside, far away from the two tori, there are unstable harmonic ones that are also unstable minimal surfaces.
We characterize general pseudo-harmonic morphisms from a Riemannian manifold to a Hermitian manifold as pseudo horizontally weakly conformal maps with an additional property. We study to what extent we can (locally) describe these submersive pseudo-harmonic morphisms via the foliation given by the kernel of the associated f-structure. In a second part, we point out that, in the case of pseudo-harmonic morphisms with one and two-dimensional fibers, the induced f-structure gives rise to an almost contact, respectively almost complex structure on the domain. We give criteria for normality and int…
In this paper we introduce two new methods for constructing harmonic morphisms from solvable Lie groups. The first method yields global solutions from any simply connected nilpotent Lie group and from any Riemannian symmetric space of non-compact type and rank $r\ge 3$. The second method provides us with global solutions from any Damek-Ricci space and many non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces. We then give a continuous family of 3-dimensional solvable Lie groups not admitting any complex valued harmonic morphisms, not even locally.
Twistor methods provide a powerful tool in the study of harmonic maps and harmonic morphisms. Indeed, their use has enabled us to produce a variety of examples of harmonic morphisms defined on 4-dimensional manifolds, and a complete classification in some cases. In the first part of this work, we generalize those constructions to obtain harmonic morphisms from higher-dimensional manifolds. The use of twistor methods in the study of Jacobi fields has proved quite fruitful, leading to a series of results. In the second part of this work we give a general treatment of the relations between Jacobi…
We describe the relationship between complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Minkowski 4-space} and the shear-free ray congruences of mathematical physics. Then we show how a horizontally conformal submersion on a domain of Euclidean 3-space gives the boundary values at infinity of a complex-valued harmonic morphism on hyperbolic 4-space.
We construct the first known complex valued harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups SL(n,R), SU*(2n) and Sp(n,R) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We then introduce the notion of a bi-eigenfamily and employ this to construct the first known solutions on the non-compact Riemannian SO*(2n), SO(p,q), SU(p,q) and Sp(p,q). Applying a duality principle we then show how to manufacture the first known complex valued harmonic morphisms from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with semi-Riemannian metrics.
In this paper we introduce a new method for manufacturing harmonic morphisms from semi-Riemannian manifolds. This is employed to yield a variety of new examples from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We develop a duality principle and show how this can be used to construct the first known examples of harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups SL(n,R), SU(2n), Sp(n,R), SO(2n), SO(p,q), SU(p,q) and Sp(p,q) equipped with their standard dual semi-Riemannian metrics.
We use functions of a bicomplex variable to unify the existing constructions of harmonic morphisms from a 3-dimensional Euclidean or pseudo-Euclidean space to a Riemannian or Lorentzian surface. This is done by using the notion of complex-harmonic morphism between complex-Riemannian manifolds and showing how these are given by bicomplex-holomorphic functions when the codomain is one-bicomplex dimensional. By taking real slices, we recover well-known compactifications for the three possible real cases. On the way, we discuss some interesting conformal compactifications of complex-Riemannian man…
We define, on smooth manifolds, the notions of almost twistorial structure and twistorial map, thus providing a unified framework for all known examples of twistor spaces. The condition of being harmonic morphisms naturally appears among the geometric properties of submersive twistorial maps between low-dimensional Weyl spaces endowed with a nonintegrable almost twistorial structure due to Eells and Salamon. This leads to the twistorial characterisation of harmonic morphisms between Weyl spaces of dimensions four and three. Also, we give a thorough description of the twistorial maps with one-d…
We construct 4-dimensional Riemannian Lie groups carrying left-invariant conformal foliations with minimal leaves of codimension 2. We show that these foliations are holomorphic with respect to an (integrable) Hermitian structure which is not K\" ahler. We then prove that the Riemannian Lie groups constructed are {\it not} Einstein manifolds. This answers an important open question in the theory of complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Riemannian 4-manifolds.
We investigate the structure of a harmonic morphism $F$ from a Riemannian 4-manifold M^4 to a 2-surface $N^2$ near a critical point $m_0$. If $m_0$ is an isolated critical point or if $M^4$ is compact without boundary, we show that $F$ is pseudo-holomorphic w.r.t. an almost Hermitian structure defined in a neighbourhood of $m_0$. If $M^4$ is compact without boundary, the singular fibres of $F$ are branched minimal surfaces.
We study 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds equipped with a minimal and conformal foliation $\mathcal F$ of codimension 2. We prove that the two adapted almost Hermitian structures $J_1$ and $J_2$ are both cosymplectic if and only if $\mathcal F$ is Riemannian and its horizontal distribution $\mathcal H$ is integrable.
Inspired by the all-important conformal invariance of harmonic maps on two-dimensional domains, this article studies the relationship between biharmonicity and conformality. We first give a characterization of biharmonic morphisms, analogues of harmonic morphisms investigated by Fuglede and Ishihara, which, in particular, explicits the conditions required for a conformal map in dimension four to preserve biharmonicity and helps producing the first example of a biharmonic morphism which is not a special type of harmonic morphism. Then, we compute the bitension field of horizontally weakly confo…
Relating the Dirac operators on the total space and on the base manifold of a horizontally conformal submersion, we characterize Dirac morphisms, i.e. maps which pull back (local) harmonic spinor fields onto (local) harmonic spinor fields.
We study left-invariant foliations $\mathcal{F}$ on Riemannian Lie groups $G$ generated by a subgroup $K$. We are interested in such foliations which are conformal and with minimal leaves of codimension two. We classify such foliations $\mathcal{F}$ when the subgroup $K$ is one of the important $\textbf{SU}(2)\times\textbf{SU}(2)$, $\textbf{SU}(2)\times\textbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, $\textbf{SU}(2)\times\textbf{SO}(2)$ or $\textbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})\times\textbf{SO}(2)$. By this we yield new multi-dimensional families of Lie groups $G$ carrying such foliations in each case. These foliations $\math…
Maps between Riemannian manifolds which are submersions on a dense subset, are studied by means of the eigenvalues of the pull-back of the target metrics, the first fundamental form. Expressions for the derivatives of these eigenvalues yield characterizations of harmonicity, totally geodesic maps and biconformal changes of metric preserving harmonicity. A Schwarz lemma for pseudo harmonic morphisms is proved, using the dilatation of the eigenvalues and, in dimension five, a Bochner technique method, involving the Laplacian of the difference of the eigenvalues, gives conditions forcing pseudo h…
P. Baird and the second author studied harmonic morphisms from a three-dimensional simply-connected space form to a surface and obtained a complete local and global classification of them. In this paper, we obtain a description of all harmonic morphisms from any three-dimensional Euclidean and spherical space form to a surface, namely that any such harmonic morphism is the composition of a standard harmonic morphism and a weakly conformal map. We list the standard harmonic morphisms.
We study harmonic almost contact structures in the context of contact metric manifolds, and an analysis is carried out when such a manifold fibres over an almost Hermitian manifold, as exemplified by the Boothby-Wang fibration. Two types of almost contact metric warped products are also studied, relating their harmonicity to that of the almost Hermitian structure on the base or fibre.
We construct large families of harmonic morphisms which are holomorphic with respect to Hermitian structures by finding heierarchies of Weierstrass-type representations. This enables us to find new examples of complex-valued harmonic morphisms from Euclidean spaces and spheres.
We give a classification of quadratic harmonic morphisms between Euclidean spaces (Theorem 2.4) after proving a Rank Lemma. We also find a correspondence between umbilical (Definition 2.7) quadratic harmonic morphisms and Clifford systems. In the case $ {\Bbb R}^{4}\longrightarrow {\Bbb R}^{3} $, we determine all quadratic harmonic morphisms and show that, up to a constant factor, they are all bi-equivalent (Definition 3.2) to the well-known Hopf construction map and induce harmonic morphisms bi-equivalent to the Hopf fibration ${\Bbb S}^{3} \longrightarrow {\Bbb S}^{2}$.
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
We characterise the actions, by holomorphic isometries on a Kähler manifold with zero first Betti number, of an abelian Lie group of dim\geq 2, for which the moment map is horizontally weakly conformal (with respect to some Euclidean structure on the Lie algebra of the group). Furthermore, we study the hyper-Kähler moment map $ϕ$ induced by an abelian Lie group T acting by triholomorphic isometries on a hyper-Kähler manifold M, with zero first Betti number, thus obtaining the following: If dim T=1 then $ϕ$ is a harmonic morphism. Moreover, we illustrate this on the tangent bundle of the comple…
We study a geometrical condition (PHWC) which is weaker than horizontal weak conformality. In particular, we show that harmonic maps satisfying this condition, which will be called {\em pseudoharmonic morphisms}, include harmonic morphisms and can be described as pulling back certain germs to certain other germs. Finally, we construct a canonical f-structure associated to every map satisfying (PHWC) and find conditions on this f-structure to ensure the harmonicity of the map.
We propose a new notion called \emph{infinity-harmonic maps}between Riemannain manifolds. These are natural generalizations of the well known notion of infinity harmonic functions and are also the limiting case of $p$% -harmonic maps as $p\to \infty $. Infinity harmoncity appears in many familiar contexts. For example, metric projection onto the orbit of an isometric group action from a tubular neighborhood is infinity harmonic. Unfortunately, infinity-harmonicity is not preserved under composition. Those infinity harmonic maps that always preserve infinity harmonicity under pull back are call…
