Motivated by a problem in learning theory, we are led to study the dominant eigenvalue of a class of random matrices. This turns out to be related to the roots of the derivative of random polynomials (generated by picking their roots uniformly at random in the interval [0, 1], although our results extend to other distributions). This, in turn, requires the study of the statistical behavior of the harmonic mean of random variables as above, and that, in turn, leads us to delicate question of the rate of convergence to stable laws and tail estimates for stable laws.

We use free probability to compute the limiting spectral properties of the harmonic mean of $n$ i.i.d. Wishart random matrices $\mathbf{W}_i$ whose limiting aspect ratio is $γ\in (0,1)$ when $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{W}_i] = \mathbf{I}$. We demonstrate an interesting phenomenon where the harmonic mean $\mathbf{H}$ of the $n$ Wishart matrices is closer in operator norm to $\mathbb{E}[\mathbf{W}_i]$ than the arithmetic mean $\mathbf{A}$ for small $n$, after which the arithmetic mean is closer. We also prove some results for the general case where the expectation of the Wishart matrices are not the ide…
We consider the Cucker-Smale system with multiplicative noise in a harmonic potential field and investigate the effect of harmonic potential field. In the presence of external potential force, the system is expected to emerge into almost surely velocity flocking and spatial concentration, due to the alignment mechanism, confining harmonic potential field and multiplicative noise. By constructing a stochastic Lyapunov functional, we derive a sufficient condition for the almost surely flocking and concentration behavior for the stochastic particle model, and verify it numerically. Then, we discu…
This work is about a new class of martingales: the vertical martingales. We construct the vertical martingale for smooth submersions and we develop a stochastic calculus for one. Furthermore, we gives a stochastic characterization for harmonic sections.
The randomised Horn problem, in both its additive and multiplicative version, has recently drawn increasing interest. Especially, closed analytical results have been found for the rank-1 perturbation of sums of Hermitian matrices and products of unitary matrices. We will generalise these results to rank-1 perturbations for products of positive definite Hermitian matrices and prove the other results in a new unified way. Our ideas work along harmonic analysis for matrix groups via spherical transforms that have been successfully applied in products of random matrices in the past years. In order…
A celebrated result of Karpelevi\v c describes $Θ_n,$ the collection of all eigenvalues arising from the stochastic matrices of order $n.$ The boundary of $Θ_n$ consists of roots of certain one-parameter families of polynomials, and those polynomials are naturally associated with the so--called reduced Ito polynomials of Types 0, I, II and III. In this paper we explicitly characterise all $n \times n$ stochastic matrices whose characteristic polynomials are of Type 0 or Type I, and all sparsest stochastic matrices of order $n$ whose characteristic polynomials are of Type II or Type III. The re…
We investigate the properties of uniform doubly stochastic random matrices, that is non-negative matrices conditioned to have their rows and columns sum to 1. The rescaled marginal distributions are shown to converge to exponential distributions and indeed even large sub-matrices of side-length $o(n^{1/2-ε})$ behave like independent exponentials. We determine the limiting empirical distribution of the singular values the the matrix. Finally the mixing time of the associated Markov chains is shown to be exactly 2 with high probability.
We first prove stochastic representation formulae for space-time harmonic mappings defined on manifolds with evolving Riemannian metric. We then apply these formulae to derive Liouville type theorems under appropriate curvature conditions. Space-time harmonic mappings which are defined globally in time correspond to ancient solutions to the harmonic map heat flow. As corollaries, we establish triviality of such ancient solutions in a variety of different situations.
We give a proof of Lipschitz continuity of p-harmonious functions, that are tug-of-war game analogies of ordinary p-harmonic functions. This result is used to obtain a new proof of Harnack's inequality for p-harmonic functions in the case $p>2$ that avoids classical techniques like Moser iteration, but instead relies on suitable choices of strategies for the stochastic tug-of-war game.
Multivariate process satisfying affine stochastic recurrence equation with generic diagonal matrices is considered. We prove that the stationary solution is regularly varying. The results are applicable to diagonal autoregressive models.
Let $P(M,G)$ be a principal fiber bundle and $E(M,N,G,P)$ be an associate fiber bundle. Our interested is to study harmonic sections of the projection $π_{E}$ of $E$ into $M$. Our first purpose is to give a stochastic characterization of harmonic section from $M$ into $E$ and a geometric characterization of harmonic sections with respect to its equivariant lift. The second purpose is to show a version of Liouville theorem for harmonic sections and to prove that section $M$ into $E$ is a harmonic section if and only if it is parallel.
For a harmonic function on a tree with random walk whose transition probabilities are bounded between two constants in (0,1/2), it is known that the radial and stochastic properties of convergence, boundedness and finiteness of energy are all a.s. equivalent. We prove here that the analogous non-tangential properties are a.e. equivalent to the above ones.
In this paper, the exact values of the structured singular values of some generalized stochastic complex matrices is explicit in term of the constant row (column) sum.
We consider Markov processes of cubic stochastic (in a fixed sense) matrices which are also called quadratic stochastic process (QSPs). A QSP is a particular case of a continuous-time dynamical system whose states are stochastic cubic matrices satisfying an analogue of the Kolmogorov-Chapman equation (KCE). Since there are several kinds of multiplications between cubic matrices we have to fix first a multiplication and then consider the KCE with respect to the fixed multiplication. Moreover, the notion of stochastic cubic matrix also varies depending on the real models of application. The exis…
We derive conditions on the products of stochastic matrices guaranteeing the existence of a unique limit invariant distribution. Belying our approach is the hereby defined notion of restricted triangulated Laman graphs. The main idea is the following: to each triangle in the graph, we assign a stochastic matrix. Two matrices can be adjacent in a product only if their corresponding triangles share an edge in the graph. We provide an explicit formula for the limit invariant distribution of the product in terms of the individual stochastic matrices.
We construct quadratic stochastic processes (QSP) (also known as Markov processes of cubic matrices) in continuous and discrete times. These are dynamical systems given by (a fixed type, called $σ$) stochastic cubic matrices satisfying an analogue of Kolmogorov-Chapman equation (KCE) with respect to a fixed multiplications (called $μ$) between cubic matrices. The existence of a stochastic (at each time) solution to the KCE provides the existence of a QSP called a QSP of type $(σ| μ)$. In this paper, our aim is to construct and study trajectories of QSPs for specially chosen notions of stochast…
Let $X$ be a matrix sampled uniformly from the set of doubly stochastic matrices of size $n\times n$. We show that the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix $\sqrt{n}(X-{\mathbf {E}}X)$ converges almost surely to the circular law. This confirms a conjecture of Chatterjee, Diaconis and Sly.
In arXiv:1410.7268v3, the authors consider eigenvalues of overlapping Wishart matrices and prove that its fluctuations asymptotically convergence to the Gaussian free field. In this brief note, their result is extended to show that when the matrix entries undergo stochastic evolution, the fluctuations asymptotically converge to a three-dimensional Gaussian field, which has an explicit contour integral formula. This is analogous to the result of arXiv:1011.3544 for stochastic Wigner matrices.
We study multiplicative nested sums, which are generalizations of harmonic sums, and provide a calculation through multiplication of index matrices. Special cases interpret the index matrices as stochastic transition matrices of random walks on a finite number of sites. Relations among multiplicative nested sums, which are generalizations of relations between harmonic series and multiple zeta functions, can be easily derived from identities of the index matrices. Combinatorial identities and their generalizations can also be derived from this computation.
We show that the set of entries generated by any finite set of doubly stochastic matrices is nowhere dense, in contrast to the cases of stochastic matrices or unitary matrices. In other words, there is no finite universal set of doubly stochastic matrices, even with the weakest notion of universality. Our proof is based on a theorem for topological semigroups with the convergent property. A topological semigroup is convergent if every infinite product converges. We show that in a compact and convergent semigroup, under some restrictions, the closure of every finitely generated subsemigroup can…
The paper deals with the convergence properties of the products of random (row-)stochastic matrices. The limiting behavior of such products is studied from a dynamical system point of view. In particular, by appropriately defining a dynamic associated with a given sequence of random (row-)stochastic matrices, we prove that the dynamics admits a class of time-varying Lyapunov functions, including a quadratic one. Then, we discuss a special class of stochastic matrices, a class $\Pstar$, which plays a central role in this work. We then introduce balanced chains and using some geometric propertie…
We consider UL and LU stochastic factorizations of the transition probability matrix of a random walk on the integers, which is a doubly infinite tridiagonal stochastic Jacobi matrix. We give conditions on the free parameter of both factorizations in terms of certain continued fractions such that this stochastic factorization is always possible. By inverting the order of the factors (also known as a Darboux transformation) we get new families of random walks on the integers. We identify the spectral matrices associated with these Darboux transformations (in both cases) which are basically conj…
We give a new result on the well-posedness of the two-dimensional Stochastic Harmonic Map flow, whose study is motivated by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert model for thermal fluctuations in micromagnetics. We construct strong solutions that belong locally to the spaces $C([s,t);H^1)\cap L^2([s,t);H^2)$, $0\leq s<t\leq T$. It that sense, these maps are a counterpart of the so-called "Struwe solutions" of the deterministic model. We also give a natural criterion of uniqueness that extends A.\ Freire's Theorem to the stochastic case. Both results are obtained under the condition that the noise term h…
We characterise the class of distributions of random stochastic matrices $X$ with the property that the products $X(n)X(n-1) ... X(1)$ of i.i.d. copies $X(k)$ of $X$ converge a.s. as $n \rightarrow \infty$ and the limit is Dirichlet distributed. This extends a result by Chamayou and Letac (1994) and is illustrated by several examples that are of interest in applications.

Our goal is to find a necessary and sufficient condition on the consensus over a random network, generated by i.i.d. stochastic matrices. We show that the consensus problem in three different convergence modes (almost surely, in probability, and in L1) are equivalent, thus have the same necessary and sufficient condition. We obtain the necessary and sufficient condition through the stability in a projected subspace.
We consider one-dimensional infinite chains of harmonic oscillators with stochastic perturbations and long-range interactions which have polynomial decay rate $|x|^{-θ}, x \to \infty, θ> 1$, where $x \in \mathbb{Z}$ is the interaction range. We prove that if $2< θ\le 3$, then the time evolution of the macroscopic thermal energy distribution is superdiffusive and governed by a fractional diffusion equation with exponent $\frac{3}{7-θ}$, while if $θ> 3$, then the exponent is $\frac{3}{4}$. The threshold is $ θ= 3$ because the derivative of the dispersion relation diverges as $k \to 0$ when $θ\le…
We investigate the influence of an infinite dimensional Gaussian noise on the bubbling phenomenon for the stochastic harmonic map flow $u(t,\cdot ):\mathbb{D}^2\to\mathbb{S}^2$, from the two-dimensional unit disc onto the sphere. The diffusion term is assumed to have range one pointwisely in the tangent space $T_{u(t,x)}\mathbb{S}^2$, so that the noise preserves the 1-corotational symmetry of solutions. Under the assumption that its space-correlation is of trace class (in some appropriate hilbert space), we prove that the noise generates blow-up with positive probability. This scenario happens…
We show that the global fluctuations of spectra of GOE and GUE matrices and their principal submatrices executing Dyson's Brownian motion are Gaussian in the limit of large matrix dimensions. For nested submatrices one obtains a limiting three-dimensional generalized Gaussian process; its restrictions to two-dimensional sections that are monotone in matrix sizes and time moments coincide with the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field with zero boundary conditions. The proof is by moment convergence, and it extends to more general Wigner matrices and their stochastic evolution.
In this paper, we study the exact asymptotic separation rate of two distinct solutions of Caputo stochastic multi-term differential equations (Caputo SMTDEs for short). Our goal in this paper is to establish results on the global existence and uniqueness and continuity dependence of the initial values of the solutions to Caputo SMTDEs with non-permutable matrices of order $α\in (\frac{1}{2},1)$ and $β\in (0,1)$ whose coefficients satisfy a standard Lipschitz condition. For this class of systems, we then show the asymptotic separation property between two different solutions of Caputo SMTDEs wi…
We have completely rewritten the paper, and corrected the proofs. We construct an exponential map at any point in the (n-1)-skeleton minus the (n-2)-skeleton of an n-dimensional Riemannian polyhedron. We have added allover the extra-assumption that the exponential map is totally geodesic at points in the (n-1)-skeleton minus the (n-2)-skeleton. This condition is automatically realized for instance if the dimension is one, or if the metric is flat.
We prove that Gibbs measures based on 1D defocusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger functionals with sub-harmonic trapping can be obtained as the mean-field/large temperature limit of the corresponding grand-canonical ensemble for many bosons. The limit measure is supported on Sobolev spaces of negative regularity and the corresponding density matrices are not trace-class. The general proof strategy is that of a previous paper of ours, but we have to complement it with Hilbert-Schmidt estimates on reduced density matrices.
We develop an improved version of the stochastic semigroup approach to study the edge of $β$-ensembles pioneered by Gorin and Shkolnikov, and later extended to rank-one additive perturbations by the author and Shkolnikov. Our method is applicable to a significantly more general class of random tridiagonal matrices than that considered in these previous works, including some non-symmetric cases that are not covered by the stochastic operator formalism of Bloemendal, Ramírez, Rider, and Virág. We present two applications of our main results: Firstly, we prove the convergence of $β$-Laguerre-type…
We consider countable system of harmonic oscillators on the real line with quadratic interaction potential with finite support and local external force (stationary stochastic process) acting only on one fixed particle. In the case of positive definite potential and initial conditions lying in $l_2(\mathbb{Z})$-space the perpesentation of the deviations of the particles from their equilibrium points are found. Precisely, deviation of each particle could be represented as the sum of some stationary process (it is also time limiting process in distribution for that function) and the process which…
We determine the operator limit for large powers of random tridiagonal matrices as the size of the matrix grows. The result provides a novel expression in terms of functionals of Brownian motions for the Laplace transform of the Airy$_β$ process, which describes the largest eigenvalues in the $β$ ensembles of random matrix theory. Another consequence is a Feynman-Kac formula for the stochastic Airy operator of Ramírez, Rider, and Virág. As a side result, we find that the difference between the area underneath a standard Brownian excursion and one half of the integral of its squared local times…
We study bivariate stochastic recurrence equations with triangular matrix coefficients and we characterize the tail behavior of their stationary solutions ${\bf W} =(W_1,W_2)$. Recently it has been observed that $W_1,W_2$ may exhibit regularly varying tails with different indices, which is in contrast to well-known Kesten-type results. However, only partial results have been derived. Under typical "Kesten-Goldie" and "Grey" conditions, we completely characterize tail behavior of $W_1,W_2$. The tail asymptotics we obtain has not been observed in previous settings of stochastic recurrence equati…
Given a matrix of distribution functions and a quasi-stochastic matrix, i.e. an irreducible nonnegative matrix with maximal eigenvalue one and associated unique positive left and right eigenvectors, the article studies the properties of an associated matrix renewal measure and a related integral equation. Unlike earlier work this is done by a purely probabilistic approach based on a simple harmonic transform. Main results include Markov renewal-type theorems and a Stone-type decomposition under an absolute continuity condition. Three applications are given at the end of the paper.
The BMO martingale theory is extensively used to study nonlinear multi-dimensional stochastic equations (SEs) in $\cR^p$ ($p\in [1, \infty)$) and backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) in $\cR^p\times \cH^p$ ($p\in (1, \infty)$) and in $\cR^\infty\times \bar{\cH^\infty}^{BMO}$, with the coefficients being allowed to be unbounded. In particular, the probabilistic version of Fefferman's inequality plays a crucial role in the development of our theory, which seems to be new. Several new results are consequently obtained. The particular multi-dimensional linear case for SDEs and BSDEs …
We discuss the limiting spectral density of real symmetric random matrices. Other than in standard random matrix theory the upper diagonal entries are not assumed to be independent, but we will fill them with the entries of a stochastic process. Under assumptions on this process, which are satisfied, e.g., by stationary Markov chains on finite sets, by stationary Gibbs measures on finite state spaces, or by Gaussian Markov processes, we show that the limiting spectral distribution depends on the way the matrix is filled with the stochastic process. If the filling is in a certain way compatible…
A new sufficient condition for a list of real numbers to be the spectrum of a symmetric doubly stochastic matrix is presented; this is a contribution to the classical spectral inverse problem for symmetric doubly stochastic matrices that is still open in its full generality. It is proved that whenever $λ_2, \ldots, λ_n$ are non-positive real numbers with $1 + λ_2 + \ldots + λ_n \geqslant 1/2$, then there exists a symmetric, doubly stochastic matrix whose spectrum is precisely $(1, λ_2, \ldots, λ_n)$. We point out that this criterion is incomparable to the classical sufficient conditions due to…
Motivated by the stochastic block model, we investigate a class of Wigner-type matrices with certain block structures, and establish a CLT for the corresponding linear spectral statistics via the large-deviation bounds from local law and the cumulant expansion formula. We apply the results to the stochastic block model. Specifically, a class of renormalized adjacency matrices will be block-Wigner-type matrices. Further, we show that for certain estimator of such renormalized adjacency matrices, which will be no longer Wigner-type but share long-range non-decaying weak correlations among the en…
We study solution X of the stochastic equation X = AX +B, where A is a random matrix and B,X are random vectors, the law of (A,B) is given and X is independent of (A,B). The equation is meant in law, the matrix A is 2x2 upper triangular, A_{11}=A_{22}>0, A_{12} is real. A sharp asymptotics of the tail of X =(X _1,X_2) is obtained. We show that under "so called" Kesten-Goldie conditions P (X_2>t)\sim t^{-a} and P (X_1>t )\sim t^{-a}(\log t)^b, where b =a or a\2.

We show that finite rank perturbations of certain random matrices fit in the framework of infinitesimal (type B) asymptotic freeness. This can be used to explain the appearance of free harmonic analysis (such as subordination functions appearing in additive free convolution) in computations of outlier eigenvalues in spectra of such matrices.
If a left-product $M_n... M_1$ of square complex matrices converges to a nonnull limit when $n\to\infty$ and if the $M_n$ belong to a finite set, it is clear that there exists an integer $n_0$ such that the $M_n$, $n\ge n_0$, have a common right-eigenvector $V$ for the eigenvalue 1. Now suppose that the $M_n$ are nonnegative and that $V$ has positive entries. Denoting by $Δ$ the diagonal matrix whose diagonal entries are the entries of $V$, the stochastic matrices $S_n=Δ^{-1}M_nΔ$ satisfy $M_n... M_{n_0}=ΔS_n... S_{n_0}Δ^{-1}$, so the problem of the convergence of $M_n... M_1$ reduces to the o…
We solve infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (ISDEs) describing an infinite number of Brownian particles interacting via two-dimensional Coulomb potentials. The equilibrium states of the associated unlabeled stochastic dynamics are the Ginibre random point field and Dyson's measures, which appear in random matrix theory. To solve the ISDEs we establish an integration by parts formula for these measures. Because the long-range effect of two-dimensional Coulomb potentials is quite strong, the properties of Brownian particles interacting with two-dimensional Coulomb potentials …
Distributed consensus and other linear systems with system stochastic matrices $W_k$ emerge in various settings, like opinion formation in social networks, rendezvous of robots, and distributed inference in sensor networks. The matrices $W_k$ are often random, due to, e.g., random packet dropouts in wireless sensor networks. Key in analyzing the performance of such systems is studying convergence of matrix products $W_kW_{k-1}... W_1$. In this paper, we find the exact exponential rate $I$ for the convergence in probability of the product of such matrices when time $k$ grows large, under the as…
