We prove that there is a residual set of families of smooth or analytic unimodal maps with quadratic critical point and negative Schwarzian derivative such that almost every non-regular parameter is Collet-Eckmann with subexponential recurrence of the critical orbit. Those conditions lead to a detailed and robust statistical description of the dynamics. This proves the Palis conjecture in this setting.
We present an illustrative example of an inverse limit space and a shift map associated with an F_2^n unimodal mapping consisting of two hyperbolae. Topologically, in case n=0 the limit space is an interval, in case n=1,2, it is a sin(1/x)-continuum, and in case n=3 it is a certain continuum endowed with a specific geometrical beauty. The dynamics of the shift map is also described. Operator algebraists may regard the constructed space as a spectrum of a commutative coefficient C*-algebra - an object which plays a role in crossed-product theory.
We prove that the well-known 3/2 stability condition established for the Wright equation (WE) still holds if the nonlinearity $p(\exp(-x)-1)$ in WE is replaced by a decreasing or unimodal smooth function f with $f'(0)<0$ satisfying the standard negative feedback and below boundedness conditions and having everywhere negative Schwarz derivative.
We establish a criterion for local boundedness and hence normality of a family $\F$ of analytic functions on a domain $D$ in the complex plane whose corresponding family of derivatives is locally bounded. Furthermore we investigate the relation between domains of normality of a family $\F$ of meromorphic functions and its corresponding Schwarzian derivative family. We also establish some criterion for the Schwarzian derivative family of a family $\F$ of analytic functions on a domain $D$ in the complex plane to be a normal family.
For an infinitely renormalizable negative Schwarzian unimodal map $f$ with non-flat critical point, we analyze statistical properties of periodic points as the periods tend to infinity. Introducing a weight function $φ$ which is a continuous or a geometric potential $φ=-β\log|f'|$ ($β\in\mathbb R$), we establish the level-2 Large Deviation Principle for weighted periodic points. From this, we deduce that all weighted periodic points equidistribute with respect to equilibrium states for the potential $φ$. In particular, it follows that all periodic points are equidistributed with respect to mea…
The main purpose is to show that Feigenbaum delta constant is much more universal than believed. The paper is mainly devoted to period-doubling processes in families in one parameter of endomorphisms of the interval and consider generalizations of the Feigenbaum delta constant. We formulate the so-called parenthesis permeability hypothesis, a conjecture that holds for all types of bifurcation (i.e. for flip, fold, pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations, which states that under some conditions two or three different functions may have exactly the same bifurcation points. We propose a conjectu…
This paper will study topological, geometrical and measure-theoretical properties of the real Fibonacci map. Our goal was to figure out if this type of recurrence really gives any pathological examples and to compare it with the infinitely renormalizable patterns of recurrence studied by Sullivan. It turns out that the situation can be understood completely and is of quite regular nature. In particular, any Fibonacci map (with negative Schwarzian and non-degenerate critical point) has an absolutely continuous invariant measure (so, we deal with a ``regular'' type of chaotic dynamics). It turns…
We prove that the Newton quotient of the average R(t) of a lipschitzian function (with non vanishing variation) with respect to the SRB measure on a transversal family f_t of piecewise expanding unimodal maps, after an appropriated normalization, converges in distribution to the normal distribution.
In this note we consider a collection C of one parameter families of unimodal maps of [0,1]. Each family in the collection has the form uf where u is in [0,1]. Denoting the kneading sequence of uf by K(uf), we will prove that for each member of C, the map u->K(uf) is monotone. It then follows that for each member of C the map u -> h(uf) is monotone, where h(uf) is the topological entropy of uf. For interest, uf(x)=4ux(1-x) and uf(x)=usin(pi x) are shown to belong to C.
We study a topologically exact, negative Schwarzian unimodal map whose critical point is non-recurrent and flat. Assuming the critical order is either logarithmic or polynomial, we establish the Large Deviation Principle and give a partial description of the zeros of the corresponding rate functions. We apply our main results to a certain parametrized family of unimodal maps in the same topological conjugacy class, and give a complete description of the zeros of the rate functions. We observe a qualitative change at a transition parameter, and show that the sets of zeros depend continuously on…
We obtain estimates relating the phase space and the parameter space of analytic families of unimodal maps. Using those estimates, we show that typical analytic unimodal maps admit a quasiquadratic renormalization. This reduces the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps to the quasiquadratic case which had been studied in \cite {AM2}. The estimates proved here correspond exactly to the Phase-Parameter relation proved in \cite {AM} in the quadratic case, and allows one to obtain sharp estimates on the dynamics of typical unimodal maps which were available only in the quadr…
We consider quasisymmetric reparametrizations of the parameter space of the quadratic family. We prove that the set of quadratic maps which are either regular or Collet-Eckmann with polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit has full Lebesgue measure. (The intent of this work is just to be a rigorous reference for the companion preprint Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative. It is based on the LaTeX file of the paper Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. The proofs are very similar and in many places differ just b…
We consider the bifurcation structure of one-parameter families of unimodal maps whose differentiability is only $C^1$. The structure of its bifurcation diagram can be a very wild one in such case. However we prove that in a certain topological sense, the structure is the same as that of the standard family of quadratic polynomials. In the case of families of polynomials, irreducible component of the bifurcation diagram can be defined naturally by dividing by the polynomials corresponding to lower periods. We show that such a irreducible component can be defined even if the maps and the family…
We introduce {\it twist unimodal maps} of the interval and describe their structure. Sufficient conditions for the growth of over-rotation interval in families of maps are given.
We obtain estimates for derivative and cross--ratio distortion for $C^{2+η}$ (any $η>0$) unimodal maps with non--flat critical points. We do not require any `Schwarzian--like' condition. For two intervals $J \subset T$, the cross--ratio is defined as the value $$B(T,J):=\frac{|T||J|}{|L||R|}$$ where $L,R$ are the left and right connected components of $T\setminus J$ respectively. For an interval map $g$ \st $g_T:T \to \RRR$ is a diffeomorphism, we consider the cross--ratio distortion to be $$B(g,T, J):=\frac{B(g(T),g(J))}{B(T,J)}.$$ We prove that for all $0<K<1$ there exists some interval $I_0…
In the space of C^k piecewise expanding unimodal maps, k>=1, we characterize the C^1 smooth families of maps where the topological dynamics does not change (the "smooth deformations") as the families tangent to a continuous distribution of codimension-one subspaces (the "horizontal" directions) in that space. Furthermore such codimension-one subspaces are defined as the kernels of an explicit class of linear functionals. As a consequence we show the existence of C^{k-1+Lip} deformations tangent to every given C^k horizontal direction, for k>=2.
In this paper we construct a correspondence between the parameter spaces of two families of one-dimensional dynamical systems, the alpha-continued fraction transformations T_alpha and unimodal maps. This correspondence identifies bifurcation parameters in the two families, and allows one to transfer topological and metric properties from one setting to the other. As an application, we recover results about the real slice of the Mandelbrot set, and the set of univoque numbers.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
We give bounds for the global attractor of the delay differential equation $x'(t) =-μx(t)+f(x(t-τ))$, where $f$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian derivative. If $f$ and $μ$ satisfy certain condition, then, regardless of the delay, all solutions enter the domain where f is monotone decreasing and the powerful results for delayed monotone feedback can be applied to describe the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. In this situation we determine the sharpest interval that contains the global attractor for any delay. In the absence of that condition, improving earlier results, we show that if …
For certain smooth unimodal families with negative Schwarzian derivative, we construct a set of Collet-Eckmann and subexponentially recurrent parameters $Ω$, whose complement set has sufficiently fast decaying density, on which exponential mixing with uniform rates occurs. We use this construction to establish holomorphy of the true fractional susceptibility function of the logistic family, in a disk of radius larger than one, for differentiation index $0\leη<1/2$, as recently conjectured by Baladi and Smania. We also obtain a fractional response formula.
We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.
We show how a parameterized family of maps of the spine of a manifold can be used to construct a family of homeomorphisms of the ambient manifold which have the inverse limits of the spine maps as global attractors. We describe applications to unimodal families of interval maps, to rotation sets, and to the standard family of circle maps.
In this note we consider a collection $\cal{C}$ of one parameter families of unimodal maps of $[0,1].$ Each family in the collection has the form $\{μf\}$ where $μ\in [0,1].$ Denoting the kneading sequence of $μf$ by $K(μf)$, we will prove that for each member of $\cal{C}$, the map $μ\mapsto K(μf)$ is monotone. It then follows that for each member of $\cal{C}$ the map $μ\mapsto h(μf)$ is monotone, where $h(uf)$ is the topological entropy of $μf.$ For interest, $μf(x)=4μx(1-x)$ and $μf(x)=μ\sin(πx)$ are shown to belong to $\cal{C}.$ This extends the work of Masato Tsujii [1].
We consider C^2 families t->f_t of C^4 nondegenerate unimodal maps. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probability (SRB) measure m_t of f_t, as a function of t on the set of Collet-Eckmann (CE) parameters: Upper bounds: Assuming existence of a transversal CE parameter, we find a positive measure set D of CE parameters, and, for each s in D, a subset D0 of D of polynomially recurrent parameters containing s as a Lebesgue density point, and constants C>1, G >4, so that, for every 1/2-Holder function A (of 1/2-Holder norm |A|) and all t in D0, |\int A dm_t -\int A dm_s| < C |A| |t-s|^{1…
In this paper we consider the topological class, denoted by AV2, of universal covering maps from the plane to the sphere with two removed points. We prove that an element f in AV2 with finite post-singular set is combinatorially equivalent to a meromorphic transcendental map g with constant Schwarzian derivative if any only if f satisfies a Bounded Geometry condition.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
In this paper we extend M. Lyubich's recent results on the global hyperbolicity of renormalization of quadratic-like germs to the space of C^r unimodal maps with quadratic critical point. We show that in this space the bounded-type limit sets of the renormalization operator have an invariant hyperbolic structure provided r ge 2+ alpha with alpha close to one. As an intermediate step between Lyubich's results and ours, we prove that the renormalization operator is hyperbolic in a Banach space of real analytic maps. We construct the local stable manifolds and prove that they form a continuous la…
We consider families of fast-slow skew product maps of the form \begin{align*} x_{n+1} = x_n+εa(x_n,y_n,ε), \quad y_{n+1} = T_εy_n, \end{align*} where $T_ε$ is a family of nonuniformly expanding maps, and prove averaging and rates of averaging for the slow variables $x$ as $ε\to0$. Similar results are obtained also for continuous time systems \begin{align*} \dot x = εa(x,y,ε), \quad \dot y = g_ε(y). \end{align*} Our results include cases where the family of fast dynamical systems consists of intermittent maps, unimodal maps (along the Collet-Eckmann parameters) and Viana maps.
We show that for almost every map in a transversal one-parameter family of piecewise expanding unimodal maps the Birkhoff sum of suitable observables along the forward orbit of the turning point satisfies the law of iterated logarithm. This result will follow from an almost sure invariance principle for the Birkhoff sum, as a function on the parameter space. Furthermore, we obtain a similar result for general one-parameter families of piecewise expanding maps on the interval.
We prove statistical limit laws for sequences of Birkhoff sums of the type $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}v_n\circ T_n^j$ where $T_n$ is a family of nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations. The key ingredient is a new martingale-coboundary decomposition for nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations which is useful already in the case when the family $T_n$ is replaced by a fixed transformation $T$, and which is particularly effective in the case when $T_n$ varies with $n$. In addition to uniformly expanding/hyperbolic dynamical systems, our results include cases where the family $T_n$ consists of intermittent …
In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized "critical relations" of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and ho…
In this paper we study the dynamics and ergodic theory of certain economic models which are implicitly defined. We consider 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional overlapping generations models, a cash-in-advance model, heterogeneous markets and a cobweb model with adaptive adjustment. We consider the inverse limit spaces of certain chaotic invariant fractal sets and their metric, ergodic and stability properties. The inverse limits give the set of intertemporal perfect foresight equilibria for the economic problem considered. First we show that the inverse limits of these models are stable under per…
Time series are proficiently converted into graphs via the horizontal visibility (HV) algorithm, which prompts interest in its capability for capturing the nature of different classes of series in a network context. We have recently shown [1] that dynamical systems can be studied from a novel perspective via the use of this method. Specifically, the period-doubling and band-splitting attractor cascades that characterize unimodal maps transform into families of graphs that turn out to be independent of map nonlinearity or other particulars. Here we provide an in depth description of the HV trea…
