For an infinitely renormalizable negative Schwarzian unimodal map $f$ with non-flat critical point, we analyze statistical properties of periodic points as the periods tend to infinity. Introducing a weight function $φ$ which is a continuous or a geometric potential $φ=-β\log|f'|$ ($β\in\mathbb R$), we establish the level-2 Large Deviation Principle for weighted periodic points. From this, we deduce that all weighted periodic points equidistribute with respect to equilibrium states for the potential $φ$. In particular, it follows that all periodic points are equidistributed with respect to measures of maximal entropy, and all periodic points weighted with their Lyapunov exponents are equidistributed with respect to the post-critical measure supported on the attracting Cantor set.
Given $C^2$ infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps $f$ and $g$ with a quadratic critical point and the same bounded combinatorial type, we prove that they are $C^{1+α}$ conjugate along the closure of the corresponding forward orbits of the critical points, for some $α>0$.
A physical measure on the attractor of a system describes the statistical behavior of typical orbits. An example occurs in unimodal dynamics. Namely, all infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps have a physical measure. For Lorenz dynamics, even in the simple case of infinitely renormalizable systems, the existence of physical measures is more delicate. In this article we construct examples of infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps which do not have a physical measure. A priori bounds on the geometry play a crucial role in (unimodal) dynamics. There are infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps whic…
Let f be an infinitely-renormalizable quadratic polynomial and J_\infty be the intersection of forward orbits of "small" Julia sets of simple renormalizations of f. We prove that J_\infty contains no hyperbolic sets.
We construct a subset of the Mandelbrot set which is dense on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set and which consists of only infinitely renormalizable points such that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at every point of this subset. We prove the local connectivity by finding bases of connected neighborhoods directly.
In this paper we prove {\it a priori bounds} for infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials satisfying a ``molecule condition''. Roughly speaking, this condition ensures that the renormalization combinatorics stay away from the satellite types. These {\it a priori bounds} imply local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set at the corresponding parameter values.
We prove combinatorial rigidity of infinitely renormalizable unicritical polynomials, P_c :z \mapsto z^d+c, with complex c, under the a priori bounds and a certain "combinatorial condition". This implies the local connectivity of the connectedness loci (the Mandelbrot set when d = 2) at the corresponding parameters.
It is shown that some topological equivalency classes of S-unimodal maps are equal to quasisymmetric conjugacy classes. This includes some infinitely renormalizable polynomials of unbounded type.
We study the parameter space of unicritical polynomials $f_c:z\mapsto z^d+c$. For complex parameters, we prove that for Lebesgue almost every $c$, the map $f_c$ is either hyperbolic or infinitely renormalizable. For real parameters, we prove that for Lebesgue almost every $c$, the map $f_c$ is either hyperbolic, or Collet-Eckmann, or infinitely renormalizable. These results are based on controlling the spacing between consecutive elements in the ``principal nest'' of parapuzzle pieces.
We use the upper and lower potential functions and Bowen's formula estimating the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of a regular semigroup generated by finitely many $C^{1+α}$-contracting mappings. This result is an application of the geometric distortion lemma in the first paper at this series.
A decoration of the Mandelbrot set $M$ is a part of $M$ cut off by two external rays landing at some tip of a satellite copy of $M$ attached to the main cardioid. In this paper we consider infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials satisfying the decoration condition, which means that the combinatorics of the renormalization operators involved is selected from a finite family of decorations. For this class of maps we prove {\it a priori} bounds. They imply local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set at the corresponding parameter values.
In this paper we show that the invariant Cantor set of period doubling type of any infinitely renormalizable area-preserving map in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalization fixed point is always contained in a Lipschitz curve but never contained in a smooth curve. This extends previous results by de Carvalho, Lyubich and Martens about strongly dissipative maps of the plane close to unimodal maps to the area-preserving setting. The method used for constructing the Lipschitz curve is very similar to the method used in the dissipative case but proving the nonexistence of…
A semigroup (dynamical system) generated by $C^{1+α}$-contracting mappings is considered. We call a such semigroup regular if the maximum $K$ of the conformal dilatations of generators, the maximum $l$ of the norms of the derivatives of generators and the smoothness $α$ of the generators satisfy a compatibility condition $K< 1/l^α$. We prove the {\em geometric distortion lemma} for a regular semigroup generated by $C^{1+α}$-contracting mappings.
This article extends the theorem of the absence of wandering domains from unimodal maps to infinitely period-doubling renormalizable Hénon-like maps in the strongly dissipative (area contracting) regime. The theorem solves an open problem proposed by several authors [van Strien (2010) and Lyubich and Martens (2011)], and covers a class of maps in the nonhyperbolic higher dimensional setting. The classical proof for unimodal maps breaks down in the Hénon settings, and two techniques, "the area argument" and "the good region and the bad region", are introduced to resolve the main difficulty. The…
Infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like map in arbitrary finite dimension is considered. The set, $\mathcal N$ of infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like maps satisfying the certain condition is invariant under renormalization operator. The Cantor attractor of infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like map, $F$ in $\mathcal N$ has {\em unbounded geometry} almost everywhere in the parameter space of the universal number which corresponds to the average Jacobian of two dimensional map. This is an extension of the same result in $\mathcal N$ for three dimensional infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like maps.
The period doubling Cantor sets of strongly dissipative Henon-like maps with different average Jacobian are not smoothly conjugated. The Jacobian Rigidity Conjecture says that the period doubling Cantor sets of two-dimensional Henon-like maps with the same average Jacobian are smoothly conjugated. This conjecture is true for average Jacobian zero, e.g. the one-dimensional case. The other extreme case is when the maps preserve area, e.g. the average Jacobian is one. Indeed, the period doubling Cantor set of area-preserving maps in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalizati…
For a non-flat $C^3$ unimodal map with a Cantor attractor, we show that for any open cover $\mathcal U$ of this attractor, the complexity function $p(\mathcal U, n)$ is of order $n\log n$. In the appendix, we construct a non-renormalizable map with a Cantor attractor for which $p(\mathcal{U}, n)$ is bounded from above for any open cover $\mathcal{U}$.
In this paper we describe the well studied process of renormalization of quadratic polynomials from the point of view of their natural extensions. In particular, we describe the topology of the inverse limit of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials and prove that when they satisfy a-priori bounds, the topology is rigid modulo its combinatorics.
We analyze the signature type of a cascade of periodic orbits associated to period doubling renormalizable maps of the two dimensional disk. The signature is a sequence of rational numbers which describes how periodic orbits turn each other and is invariant by topological conjugacies that preserve orientation. We prove that in the class of area contracting maps the signature cannot be a monotone sequence. This explains why classical examples of infinitely renormalizable maps due to Bowen, Franks and Young cannot be achieved by smooth dissipative maps showing that there are topological obstruct…
We consider infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps with real critical exponent $α>1$ and combinatorial type which is monotone and satisfies a long return condition. For these combinatorial types we prove the existence of periodic points of the renormalization operator, and that each map in the limit set of renormalization has an associated unstable manifold. An unstable manifold defines a family of Lorenz maps and we prove that each infinitely renormalizable combinatorial type (satisfying the above conditions) has a unique representative within such a family. We also prove that each infinitely …
We prove exponential contraction of renormalization along hybrid classes of infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps (with arbitrary combinatorics), in any even degree $d$. We then conclude that orbits of renormalization are asymptotic to the full renormalization horseshoe, which we construct. Our argument for exponential contraction is based on a precompactness property of the renormalization operator ("beau bounds"), which is leveraged in the abstract analysis of holomorphic iteration. Besides greater generality, it yields a unified approach to all combinatorics and degrees: there is no need …
According to Sullivan, a space ${\cal E}$ of unimodal maps with the same combinatorics (modulo smooth conjugacy) should be treated as an infinitely-dimensional Teichmüller space. This is a basic idea in Sullivan's approach to the Renormalization Conjecture. One of its principle ingredients is to supply ${\cal E}$ with the Teichmüller metric. To have such a metric one has to know, first of all, that all maps of ${\cal E}$ are quasi-symmetrically conjugate. This was proved [Ji] and [JS] for some classes of non-renormalizable maps (when the critical point is not too recurrent). Here we consider a…
We consider infinitely renormalizable unimodal mappings with topological type which is periodic under renormalization. We study the limiting behavior of fixed points of the renormalization operator as the order of the critical point increases to infinity. It is shown that a limiting dynamics exists, with a critical point that is flat, but still having a well-behaved analytic continuation to a neighborhood of the real interval pinched at the critical point. We study the dynamics of limiting maps and prove their rigidity. In particular, the sequence of fixed points of renormalization for finite …
The thermodynamical formalism is studied for renormalisable maps of the interval and the natural potential $-t \log|Df|$. Multiple and indeed infinitely many phase transitions at positive $t$ can occur for some quadratic maps. All unimodal quadratic maps with positive topological entropy exhibit a phase transition in the negative spectrum.
We obtain estimates relating the phase space and the parameter space of analytic families of unimodal maps. Using those estimates, we show that typical analytic unimodal maps admit a quasiquadratic renormalization. This reduces the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps to the quasiquadratic case which had been studied in \cite {AM2}. The estimates proved here correspond exactly to the Phase-Parameter relation proved in \cite {AM} in the quadratic case, and allows one to obtain sharp estimates on the dynamics of typical unimodal maps which were available only in the quadr…
This paper will study topological, geometrical and measure-theoretical properties of the real Fibonacci map. Our goal was to figure out if this type of recurrence really gives any pathological examples and to compare it with the infinitely renormalizable patterns of recurrence studied by Sullivan. It turns out that the situation can be understood completely and is of quite regular nature. In particular, any Fibonacci map (with negative Schwarzian and non-degenerate critical point) has an absolutely continuous invariant measure (so, we deal with a ``regular'' type of chaotic dynamics). It turns…
In this paper, we explore the period tripling and period quintupling renormalizations below $C^2$ class of unimodal maps. We show that for a given proper scaling data there exists a renormalization fixed point on the space of piece-wise affine maps which are infinitely renormalizable. Furthermore, we show that this renormalization fixed point is extended to a $C^{1+Lip}$ unimodal map, considering the period tripling and period quintupling combinatorics. Moreover, we show that there exists a continuum of fixed points of renormalizations by considering a small variation on the scaling data. Fina…
We study highly dissipative Hénon maps $$ F_{c,b}: (x,y) \mapsto (c-x^2-by, x) $$ with zero entropy. They form a region $Π$ in the parameter plane bounded on the left by the curve $W$ of infinitely renormalizable maps. We prove that Morse-Smale maps are dense in $Π$, but there exist infinitely many different topological types of such maps (even away from $W$). We also prove that in the infinitely renormalizable case, the average Jacobian $b_F$ on the attracting Cantor set $\OO_F$ is a topological invariant. These results come from the analysis of the heteroclinic web of the saddle periodic poi…
We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelli…
We study the dynamics of the renormalization operator acting on the space of pairs (v,t), where v is a diffeomorphism and t belongs to [0,1], interpreted as unimodal maps x-->v(q_t(x)), where q_t(x)=-2t|x|^a+2t-1. We prove the so called complex bounds for sufficiently renormalizable pairs with bounded combinatorics. This allows us to show that if the critical exponent a is close to an even number then the renormalization operator has a unique fixed point. Furthermore this fixed point is hyperbolic and its codimension one stable manifold contains all infinitely renormalizable pairs.
We proved the so called complex bounds for multimodal, infinitely renormalizable analytic maps with bounded combinatorics: deep renormalizations have polynomial-like extensions with definite modulus. The complex bounds is the first step to extend the renormalization theory of unimodal maps to multimodal maps.
In this paper we extend M. Lyubich's recent results on the global hyperbolicity of renormalization of quadratic-like germs to the space of C^r unimodal maps with quadratic critical point. We show that in this space the bounded-type limit sets of the renormalization operator have an invariant hyperbolic structure provided r ge 2+ alpha with alpha close to one. As an intermediate step between Lyubich's results and ours, we prove that the renormalization operator is hyperbolic in a Banach space of real analytic maps. We construct the local stable manifolds and prove that they form a continuous la…
While the forward trajectory of a point in a discrete dynamical system is always unique, in general a point can have infinitely many backward trajectories. The union of the limit points of all backward trajectories through $x$ was called by M.~Hero the "special $α$-limit" ($sα$-limit for short) of $x$. In this article we show that there is a hierarchy of $sα$-limits of points under iterations of a S-unimodal map: the size of the $sα$-limit of a point increases monotonically as the point gets closer and closer to the attractor. The $sα$-limit of any point of the attractor is the whole non-wande…
Lorenz maps are maps of the unit interval with one critical point of order rho>1, and a discontinuity at that point. They appear as return maps of leafs of sections of the geometric Lorenz flow. We construct real a priori bounds for renormalizable Lorenz maps with certain monotone combinatorics, and use these bounds to show existence of periodic points of renormalization, as well as existence of Cantor attractors for dynamics of infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps.
We construct complex a-priori bounds for certain infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps. As a corollary, we show that renormalization is a real-analytic operator on the corresponding space of Lorenz maps.
Area-preserving maps have been observed to undergo a universal period-doubling cascade, analogous to the famous Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser period doubling cascade in one-dimensional dynamics. A renormalization approach has been used by Eckmann, Koch and Wittwer in a computer-assisted proof of existence of a conservative renormalization fixed point. Furthermore, it has been shown by Gaidashev, Johnson and Martens that infinitely renormalizable maps in a neighborhood of this fixed point admit invariant Cantor sets with vanishing Lyapunov exponents on which dynamics for any two maps is smoothly c…
In this paper we shall show that there exists a polynomial unimodal map f: [0,1] -> [0,1] which is 1) non-renormalizable(therefore for each x from a residual set, $ω(x)$ is equal to an interval), 2) for which $ω(c)$ is a Cantor set, and 3) for which $ω(x)=ω(c)$ for Lebesgue almost all x. So the topological and the metric attractor of such a map do not coincide. This gives the answer to a question posed by Milnor.
We consider the bifurcation structure of one-parameter families of unimodal maps whose differentiability is only $C^1$. The structure of its bifurcation diagram can be a very wild one in such case. However we prove that in a certain topological sense, the structure is the same as that of the standard family of quadratic polynomials. In the case of families of polynomials, irreducible component of the bifurcation diagram can be defined naturally by dividing by the polynomials corresponding to lower periods. We show that such a irreducible component can be defined even if the maps and the family…
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We prove that a $C^3$ critical circle map without periodic points has zero Lyapunov exponent with respect to its unique invariant Borel probability measure. Moreover, no critical point of such a map satisfy the Collet-Eckmann condition. This result is proved directly from the well-known real a-priori bounds, without using Pesin's theory. We also show how our methods yield an analogous result for infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps of any combinatorial type. Finally we discuss an application of these facts to the study of neutral measures of certain rational maps of the Riemann sphere.
We give examples of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials $F_c: z\maps to z^2+c$ with stationary combinatorics whose Julia sets have Hausdorff dimension arbitrar y close to 1. The combinatorics of the renormalization involved is close to the Chebyshev one . The argument is based upon a new tool, a ``Recursive Quadratic Estimate'' for the Poincaré series of an infinitely re normalizable map.
We consider C^2 families t->f_t of C^4 nondegenerate unimodal maps. We study the absolutely continuous invariant probability (SRB) measure m_t of f_t, as a function of t on the set of Collet-Eckmann (CE) parameters: Upper bounds: Assuming existence of a transversal CE parameter, we find a positive measure set D of CE parameters, and, for each s in D, a subset D0 of D of polynomially recurrent parameters containing s as a Lebesgue density point, and constants C>1, G >4, so that, for every 1/2-Holder function A (of 1/2-Holder norm |A|) and all t in D0, |\int A dm_t -\int A dm_s| < C |A| |t-s|^{1…
The goal of this note is to prove the following theorem: Let $p_a(z) = z^2+a$ be a quadratic polynomial which has no irrational indifferent periodic points, and is not infinitely renormalizable. Then the Lebesgue measure of the Julia set $J(p_a)$ is equal to zero. As part of the proof we discuss a property of the critical point to be {\it persistently recurrent}, and relate our results to corresponding ones for real one dimensional maps. In particular, we show that in the persistently recurrent case the restriction $p_a|ω(0)$ is topologically minimal and has zero topological entropy. The Douad…
