In this paper we extend M. Lyubich's recent results on the global hyperbolicity of renormalization of quadratic-like germs to the space of C^r unimodal maps with quadratic critical point. We show that in this space the bounded-type limit sets of the renormalization operator have an invariant hyperbolic structure provided r ge 2+ alpha with alpha close to one. As an intermediate step between Lyubich's results and ours, we prove that the renormalization operator is hyperbolic in a Banach space of real analytic maps. We construct the local stable manifolds and prove that they form a continuous lamination whose leaves are C^1 codimension one, Banach submanifolds of the ambient space, and whose holonomy is C^{1+β} for some beta >0. We also prove that the global stable sets are C^1 immersed (codimension one) submanifolds as well, provided r ge 3+ alpha with alpha close to one. As a corollary, we deduce that in generic, one-parameter families of C^r unimodal maps, the set of parameters corresponding to infinitely renormalizable maps of bounded combinatorial type is a Cantor set with Hausdorff dimension less than one.
We define an analytic setting for renormalization of unimodal maps with an arbitrary critical exponent. We prove the global Hyperbolicity of Renormalization conjecture for unimodal maps of bounded type with a critical exponent which is sufficiently close to an even integer.
We construct a renormalization operator which acts on analytic circle maps whose critical exponent $α$ is not necessarily an odd integer $2n+1$, $n\in\mathbb N$. When $α=2n+1$, our definition generalizes cylinder renormalization of analytic critical circle maps. In the case when $α$ is close to an odd integer, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization for maps of bounded type. We use it to prove universality and $C^{1+α}$-rigidity for such maps.
A gap mapping is a discontinuous interval mapping with two strictly increasing branches that have a gap between their ranges. They are one-dimensional dynamical systems, which arise in the study of certain higher dimensional flows, for example the Lorenz flow and the Cherry flow. In this paper, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization acting on $C^3$ dissipative gap mappings, and show that the topological conjugacy classes of infinitely renormalizable gap mappings are $C^1$ manifolds.
We consider infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps with real critical exponent $α>1$ and combinatorial type which is monotone and satisfies a long return condition. For these combinatorial types we prove the existence of periodic points of the renormalization operator, and that each map in the limit set of renormalization has an associated unstable manifold. An unstable manifold defines a family of Lorenz maps and we prove that each infinitely renormalizable combinatorial type (satisfying the above conditions) has a unique representative within such a family. We also prove that each infinitely …
We prove exponential contraction of renormalization along hybrid classes of infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps (with arbitrary combinatorics), in any even degree $d$. We then conclude that orbits of renormalization are asymptotic to the full renormalization horseshoe, which we construct. Our argument for exponential contraction is based on a precompactness property of the renormalization operator ("beau bounds"), which is leveraged in the abstract analysis of holomorphic iteration. Besides greater generality, it yields a unified approach to all combinatorics and degrees: there is no need …
We use hyperbolicity of golden-mean renormalization of dissipative Hénon-like maps to prove that the boundaries of Siegel disks of sufficiently dissipative quadratic complex Hénon maps with golden-mean rotation number are topological circles. Conditionally on an appropriate renormalization hyperbolicity property, we derive the same result for Siegel disks of Hénon maps with all eventually periodic rotation numbers.
In this paper, we explore the period tripling and period quintupling renormalizations below $C^2$ class of unimodal maps. We show that for a given proper scaling data there exists a renormalization fixed point on the space of piece-wise affine maps which are infinitely renormalizable. Furthermore, we show that this renormalization fixed point is extended to a $C^{1+Lip}$ unimodal map, considering the period tripling and period quintupling combinatorics. Moreover, we show that there exists a continuum of fixed points of renormalizations by considering a small variation on the scaling data. Fina…
We consider infinitely renormalizable unimodal mappings with topological type which is periodic under renormalization. We study the limiting behavior of fixed points of the renormalization operator as the order of the critical point increases to infinity. It is shown that a limiting dynamics exists, with a critical point that is flat, but still having a well-behaved analytic continuation to a neighborhood of the real interval pinched at the critical point. We study the dynamics of limiting maps and prove their rigidity. In particular, the sequence of fixed points of renormalization for finite …
The period doubling renormalization operator was introduced by M. Feigenbaum and by P. Coullet and C. Tresser in the nineteen-seventieth to study the asymptotic small scale geometry of the attractor of one-dimensional systems which are at the transition from simple to chaotic dynamics. This geometry turns out to not depend on the choice of the map under rather mild smoothness conditions. The existence of a unique renormalization fixed point which is also hyperbolic among generic smooth enough maps plays a crucial role in the corresponding renormalization theory. The uniqueness and hyperbolicit…
We develop a renormalization theory for analytic homeomorphisms of the circle with two cubic critical points. We prove a renormalization hyperbolicity theorem. As a basis for the proofs, we develop complex a priori bounds for multi-critical circle maps.
We review recent results that lead to a very precise understanding of the dynamics of typical unimodal maps from the statistical point of view. We also describe the (generalized) renormalization approach to the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps.
We consider a family of strongly-asymmetric unimodal maps $\{f_t\}_{t\in [0,1]}$ of the form $f_t=t\cdot f$ where $f\colon [0,1]\to [0,1]$ is unimodal, $f(0)=f(1)=0$, $f(c)=1$ is of the form and $$f(x)=\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} 1-K_-|x-c|+o(|x-c|)& \mbox{ for }x<c, \\ 1-K_+|x-c|^β+ o(|x-c|^β) &\mbox{ for }x>c, \end{array}\right. $$ where we assume that $β>1$. We show that such a family contains a Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser $2^\infty$ map, and develop a renormalization theory for these maps. The scalings of the renormalization intervals of the $2^\infty$ map turn out to be super-exponential and…
It will be shown that the renormalization operator, acting on the space of smooth unimodal maps with critical exponent greater than 1, has periodic points of any combinatorial type.
The properties of uniform hyperbolicity and dominated splitting have been introduced to study the stability of the dynamics of diffeomorphisms. One meets difficulties when one tries to extend these definitions to vector fields and Shantao Liao has shown that it is more relevant to consider the linear Poincaré flow rather than the tangent flow in order to study the properties of the derivative. In this paper we define the notion of singular domination, an analog of the dominated splitting for the linear Poincaré flow which is robust under perturbations. Based on this, we give a new definition o…
We study one of the central open questions in one-dimensional renormalization theory -- the conjectural universality of golden-mean Siegel disks. We present an approach to the problem based on cylinder renormalization proposed by the second author. Numerical implementation of this approach relies on the Constructive Measurable Riemann Mapping Theorem proved by the first author. Our numerical study yields a convincing evidence to support the Hyperbolicity Conjecture in this setting.
In this paper we give a new prove of hyperbolicity of renormalization of critical circle maps using the formalism of almost-commuting pairs. We extend renormalization to two-dimensional dissipative maps of the annulus which are small perturbations of one-dimensional critical circle maps. Finally, we demontsrate that a two-dimensional map which lies in the stable set of the renormalization operator possesses an attractor which is topologically a circle. Such a circle is critical: the dynamics on it is topologically, but not smoothly, conjugate to a rigid rotation.
In this paper we deal with the Boyland order of horseshoe orbits. We prove that there exists a set $\mathcal{R}$ of renormalizable horseshoe orbits containing only quasi-one-dimensional ones, that is, for these orbits the Boyland order coincides with the unimodal order.
In this paper we give a combinatorial description of the renormlization limits of infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps with {\it essentially bounded} combinatorics admitting quadratic-like complex extensions. As an application we construct a natural analogue of the period-doubling fixed point. Dynamical hairiness is also proven for maps in this class. These results are proven by analyzing {\it parabolic towers}: sequences of maps related either by renormalization or by {\it parabolic renormalization}.
We provide a computer-assisted proof of one of the central open questions in one-dimensional renormalization theory -- universality of the golden-mean Siegel disks. We further show that for every function in the stable manifold of the golden-mean renormalization fixed point the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasicircle which coincides with the closure of the critical orbit, and that the dynamics on the boundary of the Siegel disk is rigid. Furthermore, we extend the renormalization from one-dimensional analytic maps with a golden-mean Siegel disk to two-dimensional dissipative Hénon-like ma…
We obtain estimates relating the phase space and the parameter space of analytic families of unimodal maps. Using those estimates, we show that typical analytic unimodal maps admit a quasiquadratic renormalization. This reduces the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps to the quasiquadratic case which had been studied in \cite {AM2}. The estimates proved here correspond exactly to the Phase-Parameter relation proved in \cite {AM} in the quadratic case, and allows one to obtain sharp estimates on the dynamics of typical unimodal maps which were available only in the quadr…
The boundary of the Siegel disk of a quadratic polynomial with an irrationally indifferent fixed point with the golden mean rotation number has been observed to be self-similar. The geometry of this self-similarity is universal for a large class of holomorphic maps. A renormalization explanation of this universality has been proposed in the literature. However, one of the ingredients of this explanation, the hyperbolicity of renormalization, has not been proved yet. The present work considers a cylinder renormalization - a novel type of renormalization for holomorphic maps with a Siegel disk w…
We proved the so called complex bounds for multimodal, infinitely renormalizable analytic maps with bounded combinatorics: deep renormalizations have polynomial-like extensions with definite modulus. The complex bounds is the first step to extend the renormalization theory of unimodal maps to multimodal maps.
We present a proof of the existence of a renormalization fixed point for Lorenz maps of the simplest non-unimodal combinatorial type ({0,1},{1,0,0}), and with a critical point of arbitrary order rho>1.
In the theory of renormalization for classical dynamical systems, e.g. unimodal maps and critical circle maps, topological conjugacy classes are stable manifolds of renormalization. Physically more realistic systems on the other hand may exhibit instability of renormalization within a topological class. This instability gives rise to new phenomena and opens up directions of inquiry that go beyond the classical theory. In phase space it leads to the coexistence phenomenon, i.e. there are systems whose attractor has bounded geometry but which are topologically conjugate to systems whose attracto…
A physical measure on the attractor of a system describes the statistical behavior of typical orbits. An example occurs in unimodal dynamics. Namely, all infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps have a physical measure. For Lorenz dynamics, even in the simple case of infinitely renormalizable systems, the existence of physical measures is more delicate. In this article we construct examples of infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps which do not have a physical measure. A priori bounds on the geometry play a crucial role in (unimodal) dynamics. There are infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps whic…
We prove the Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser conjecture on the hyperbolicity of the renormalization transformation of bounded type. This gives the first computer-free proof of the original Feigenbaum observation of the universal parameter scaling laws. We use the Hyperbolicity Theorem to prove Milnor's conjectures on self-similarity and "hairiness" of the Mandelbrot set near the corresponding parameter values. We also conclude that the set of real infinitely renormalizable quadratics of type bounded by some N>1 has Hausdorff dimension strictly between 0 and 1. In the course of getting these results…
We propose an extension of the one dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the case of maps on the cylinder. The kind of maps considered are commonly referred as quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We prove that the fixed point of the one dimensional renormalization operator extends to a fixed point of the quasi-periodic forced renormalization operator. We also prove that the operator is differentiable around the fixed point and we study its derivative. Then we consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps which is a unimodal one dimensional map with a f…
We prove uniform hyperbolicity of the renormalization operator for all possible real combinatorial types. We derive from it that the set of infinitely renormalizable parameter values in the real quadratic family $P_c: x\mapsto x^2+c$ has zero measure. This yields the statement in the title (where ``regular'' means to have an attracting cycle and ``stochastic'' means to have an absolutely continuous invariant measure). An application to the MLC problem is given.
We prove the uniform hyperbolicity of the near-parabolic renormalization operators acting on an infinite-dimensional space of holomorphic transformations. This implies the universality of the scaling laws, conjectured by physicists in the 70's, for a combinatorial class of bifurcations. Through near-parabolic renormalizations the polynomial-like renormalizations of satellite type are successfully studied here for the first time, and new techniques are introduced to analyze the fine-scale dynamical features of maps with such infinite renormalization structures. In particular, we confirm the rig…
According to Sullivan, a space ${\cal E}$ of unimodal maps with the same combinatorics (modulo smooth conjugacy) should be treated as an infinitely-dimensional Teichmüller space. This is a basic idea in Sullivan's approach to the Renormalization Conjecture. One of its principle ingredients is to supply ${\cal E}$ with the Teichmüller metric. To have such a metric one has to know, first of all, that all maps of ${\cal E}$ are quasi-symmetrically conjugate. This was proved [Ji] and [JS] for some classes of non-renormalizable maps (when the critical point is not too recurrent). Here we consider a…
In this paper we are concerned with quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps such that the one dimensional map (before forcing) is unimodal and it has a full cascade of period doubling bifurcations. Between one period doubling and the next one it is known that there exist a parameter value where the $2^n$-periodic orbit is superatracting. In a previous work we proposed an extension of the one-dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the quasi-periodic case. We proved that, if the family satisfies suitable hypoth…
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
