The properties of uniform hyperbolicity and dominated splitting have been introduced to study the stability of the dynamics of diffeomorphisms. One meets difficulties when one tries to extend these definitions to vector fields and Shantao Liao has shown that it is more relevant to consider the linear Poincaré flow rather than the tangent flow in order to study the properties of the derivative. In this paper we define the notion of singular domination, an analog of the dominated splitting for the linear Poincaré flow which is robust under perturbations. Based on this, we give a new definition of multi-singular hyperbolicity which is equivalent to the one recently introduced by Bonatti-da Luz. The novelty of our definition is that it does not involve the blowup of the singular set and the renormalization cocycle of the linear flows.
We prove that Lyapunov exponents of typical Hölder continuous fiber bunched linear cocycles over singular hyperbolic flows have multiplicity 1: the subspace of exceptional cocycles has infinite codimension.
It is given notions of singular hyperbolicity and sectional Lyapunov exponents of orders beyond the classical ones, namely, other dimensions besides the dimension 2 and the full dimension of the central subbundle of the singular hyperbolic set. It is obtained a characterization of dominated splittings, partial and singular hyperbolicity in this broad sense, by using Lyapunov exponents and the notion of infinitesimal Lyapunov functions. Furthermore, it is given alternative requirements to obtain singular hyperbolicity. As an application we obtain some results related to singular hyperbolic sets…
Homoclinic tangencies and singular hyperbolicity are involved in the Palis conjecture for vector fields. Typical three dimensional vector fields are well understood by recent works. We study the dynamics of higher dimensional vector fields that are away from homoclinic tangencies. More precisely, we prove that for \emph{any} dimensional vector field that is away from homoclinic tangencies, all singularities contained in its robustly transitive singular set are all hyperbolic and have the same index. Moreover, the robustly transitive set is {$C^1$-generically }partially hyperbolic if the vector…
Singular hyperbolicity is a weakened form of hyperbolicity that has been introduced for vector fields in order to allow non-isolated singularities inside the non-wandering set. A typical example of a singular hyperbolic set is the Lorenz attractor. However, in contrast to uniform hyperbolicity, singular hyperbolicity does not immediately imply robust topological properties, such as the transitivity. In this paper, we prove that open and densely inside the space of $C^1$ vector fields of a compact manifold, any singular hyperbolic attractors is robustly transitive.
We prove for a generic star vector field $X$ that, if for every chain recurrent class $C$ of $X$ all singularities in $C$ have the same index, then the chain recurrent set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. We also prove that every Lyapunov stable chain recurrent class of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. As a corollary, we prove that the chain recurrent set of a generic 4-dimensional star flow is singular hyperbolic.
A vector field X is called a star flow if every periodic orbit, of any vector field C1-close to X, is hyperbolic. It is known that the chain recurrence classes of a generic star flow X on a 3 or 4 manifold are either hyperbolic or singular hyperbolic (see [MPP] for 3-manifolds and [GLW] on 4-manifolds). As it is defined, the notion of singular hyperbolicity forces the singularities in the same class to have the same index. However, in higher dimension (i.e $\geq 5$) \cite{BdL} shows that singularities of different indices may be robustly in the same chain recurrence class of a star flow. There…
We prove that any vector field on a three-dimensional compact manifold can be approximated in the C1-topology by one which is singular hyperbolic or by one which exhibits a homoclinic tangency associated to a regular hyperbolic periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture by Palis. During the proof we obtain several other results with independent interest: a compactification of the rescaled sectional Poincaré flow and a generalization of Mañé-Pujals-Sambarino theorem for three-dimensional C2 vector fields with singularities.
We prove that every $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has either infinitely many sinks, or, infinitely many hyperbolic or singular-hyperbolic attractors whose basins form a full Lebesgue measure set. We also prove in the orientable case that the set of accumulation points of the sinks of a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has no dominated splitting with respect to the linear Poincaré flow. As a corollary we obtain that every three-dimensional flow can be $C^1$ approximated by flows with homoclinic tangencies or by singular-Axiom A flows.
We obtain some properties of $C^1$ generic surface diffeomorphisms as finiteness of {\em non-trivial} attractors, approximation by diffeomorphisms with only a finite number of {\em hyperbolic} homoclinic classes, equivalence between essential hyperbolicity and the hyperbolicity of all {\em dissipative} homoclinic classes (and the finiteness of spiral sinks). In particular, we obtain the equivalence between finiteness of sinks and finiteness of spiral sinks, abscence of domination in the set of accumulation points of the sinks, and the equivalence between Axiom A and the hyperbolicity of all ho…
We prove that every sectional-Anosov flow of a compact 3-manifold $M$ exhibits a finite collection of hyperbolic attractors and singularities whose basins form a dense subset of $M$. Applications to the dynamics of sectional-Anosov flows on compact 3-manifolds include a characterization of essential hyperbolicity, sensitivity to the initial conditions (improving \cite{ams}) and a relationship between the topology of the ambient manifold and the denseness of the basin of the singularities.
For diffeomorphisms or for non-singular flows, there are many results relating properties persistent under C1 perturbations and global structures for the dynamics ( such as hyperbolicity, partial hyperbolicity, dominated splitting). However, a difículty appears when a robust property of a flow holds on a set containing recurrent orbits accumulating a singular point. In [BdL] with Christan Bonatti we propose a a general procedure for adapting the usual hyperbolic structures to the singularities. In this paper, using this tool, we recover the results in [BDP] for flows, showing that robustly cha…

In the paper, we show that for a generic $C^1$ vector field $X$ on a closed three dimensional manifold $M$, any isolated transitive set of $X$ is singular hyperbolic. It is a partial answer of the conjecture in \cite{MP}.
The coexistence of singularities and regular orbits in chain transitive sets has been a major obstacle in understanding the hyperbolic/partial hyperbolic nature of robust dynamics. Notably, the vector fields with all periodic orbits robustly hyperbolic (star flows), are hyperbolic in absence of singularities. Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proposed a partial hyperbolicity called "singular hyperbolicity" that characterizes an open and dense subset of three dimensional star flows. In higher dimensions, Bonatti and da Luz characterize an open and dense set of star vector fields by multi-singular hy…
We relate dominated splitting for a linear multiplicative cocyle with dominated splitting for the exterior powers of this cocycle. For a C1 vector field X on a 3-manifold, we can obtain singular-hyperbolicity using only the tangent map DX of X and a family of indefinite and non-degenerate quadratic forms without using the associated flow X_t and its derivative DX_t. As a consequence, we show the existence of adapted metrics for singular-hyperbolic sets for three-dimensional C1 vector fields.
We obtain sufficient conditions for an invariant splitting over a compact invariant subset of a $C^1$ flow $X_t$ to be dominated. In particular, we reduce the requirements to obtain sectional hyperbolicity and hyperbolicity.
In this paper we consider the one dimensional spring-block model describing earthquake faulting. By using geometric singular perturbation theory and the blow-up method we provide a detailed description of the periodicity of the earthquake episodes. In particular, the limit cycles arise from a degenerate Hopf bifurcation whose degeneracy is due to an underlying Hamiltonian structure that leads to large amplitude oscillations. We use a Poincaré compactification to study the system near infinity. At infinity the critical manifold loses hyperbolicity with an exponential rate. We use an adaptation …
We show that a cocycle has a dominated splitting if and only if there is a uniform exponential gap between singular values of its iterates. Then we consider sets $Σ$ in $GL(d,\mathbb{R})$ with the property that any cocycle with values in $Σ$ has a dominated splitting. We characterize these sets in terms of existence of invariant multicones, thus extending a 2-dimensional result by Avila, Bochi, and Yoccoz. We give an example showing how these multicones can fail to have convexity properties.
For a partially hyperbolic splitting a $C^1$ vector field $X$ on a $m$-manifold $M$, we obtain singular hyperbolicity whether $E$ is one-dimensional subspace, based on the idea of cross products. We show the existence of adapted metrics for singular hyperbolic set if it has a partially hyperbolic splitting $T_ΓM = E \oplus F$, where $F$ is a volume expanding subbundle, $E$ is an uniformly contracted and one-dimensional subbundle. Theses results extend previous ones from the first author and V. Araújo.

We show that linear analytic cocycles where all Lyapunov exponents are negative infinite are nilpotent. For such one-frequency cocycles we show that they can be analytically conjugated to an upper triangular cocycle or a Jordan normal form. As a consequence, an arbitrarily small analytic perturbation leads to distinct Lyapunov exponents. Moreover, in the one-frequency case where the $k$-th Lyapunov exponent is finite and the $k+1$st negative infinite, we obtain a simple criterion for domination in which case there is a splitting into a nilpotent part and an invertible part.
We show that an exponential map $f_c(z)=e^z+c$ whose singular value $c$ is combinatorially non-recurrent and non-escaping is uniquely determined by its combinatorics, i.e. the pattern in which its dynamic rays land together. We do this by constructing puzzles and parapuzzles in the exponential family. We also prove a theorem about hyperbolicity of the postsingular set in the case that the singular value is non-recurrent. Finally, we show that boundedness of the postsingular set implies combinatorial non-recurrence if $c$ is in the Julia set.
Hyperbolicity plays an important role in the study of dynamical systems, and is a key concept in the iteration of rational functions of one complex variable. Hyperbolic systems have also been considered in the study of transcendental entire functions. There does not appear to be an agreed definition of the concept in this context, due to complications arising from the non-compactness of the phase space. In this article, we consider a natural definition of hyperbolicity that requires expanding properties on the preimage of a punctured neighbourhood of the isolated singularity. We show that this…
We investigate the breakdown of normal hyperbolicity of a manifold of equilibria of a flow. In contrast to classical bifurcation theory we assume the absence of any flow-invariant foliation at the singularity transverse to the manifold of equilibria. We call this setting bifurcation without parameters. In the present paper we provide a description of general systems with a manifold of equilibria of codimension one as a first step towards a classification of bifurcations without parameters. This is done by relating the problem to singularity theory of maps.
In this paper, we first develop a notion of dominated splitting for $\mathbb M(2,\mathbb C)$-sequences and show it is a stable property under $\|\cdot \|_\infty$-perturbation. Then we show an energy parameter belongs to the spectrum of a Jacobi operator, possibly singular, if and only if the associated Jacobi cocycle does not admit dominated splitting. This generalizes the results obtained by the second author [Z] in the scenario of Schrödinger operators. Finally, we consider dynamically defined Jacobi operators whose base dynamics is only assumed to be topologically transitive. We show an ene…
We present an extension of the notion of infinitesimal Lyapunov function to singular flows, and from this technique we deduce a characterization of partial/sectional hyperbolic sets. In absence of singularities, we can also characterize uniform hyperbolicity. These conditions can be expressed using the space derivative DX of the vector field X together with a field of infinitesimal Lyapunov functions only, and are reduced to checking that a certain symmetric operator is positive definite at the tangent space of every point of the trapping region.
We comment on mathematical results about the statistical behavior of Lorenz equations an its attractor, and more generally to the class of singular hyperbolic systems. The mathematical theory of such kind of systems turned out to be surprisingly difficult. It is remarkable that a rigorous proof of the existence of the Lorenz attractor was presented only around the year 2000 with a computer assisted proof together with an extension of the hyperbolic theory developed to encompass attractors robustly containing equilibria. We present some of the main results on the statisitcal behavior of such sy…
