In Secion~1 we describe what is known of the extent to which a separable extension of unital associative rings is a Frobenius extension. A problem of this kind is suggested by asking if three algebraic axioms for finite Jones index subfactors are dependent. In Section~2 the problem in the title is formulated in terms of separable bimodules.
In Section~3 we specialize the problem to ring extensions, noting that a biseparable extension is a two-sided finitely generated projective, split, separable extension. Some reductions of the problem are discussed and solutions in special cases are provided. In Section~4 various examples are provided of projective separable extensions that are neither finitely generated nor Frobenius and which give obstructions to weakening the hypotheses of the question in the title. We show in Section~5 that existing characterizations of the separable extensions among the Frobenius extensions in are special cases of a result for adjoint functors.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions on an Ore extension $A[x;σ,δ]$, where $A$ is a finite dimensional algebra over a field $\mathbb{F}$, for being a Frobenius extension over the ring of commutative polynomials $\mathbb{F}[x]$. As a consequence, as the title of this paper highlights, we provide a negative answer to a problem stated by Caenepeel and Kadison.
A relationship between coseparable corings and separable non-unital rings is established. In particular it is shown that an A-coring C has an associative A-balanced product. A Morita context is constructed for a coseparable coring with a grouplike element. Biseparable corings are defined, and a conjecture relating them to Frobenius corings is proposed.
We continue a study of separable equivalence from Hokkaido Mathematical Journal 24 (1995), 527-549. We prove that symmetric separable equivalent rings $A$ and $B$ are linked by a Frobenius bimodule ${}_AP_B$ such that $A$ is $P$-separable over $B$. Separably equivalent rings are linked by a biseparable bimodule $P$. In addition, the ring extension $A \rightarrow$ End $P_B$ is split, separable Frobenius. It is observed that left and right finite projective bimodules over symmetric algebras are Frobenius bimodules; twisted by the Nakayama automorphisms if over Frobenius algebras.
This paper is the result of a research project completed in the context of the first author's Undergraduate Student Research Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). We prove a nesting phenomenon for twisted Frobenius extensions. Namely, suppose $R \subseteq B \subseteq A$ are graded superrings such that $A$ and $B$ are both twisted Frobenius extensions of $R$, $R$ is contained in the center of $A$, and $A$ is projective over $B$. Our main result is that, under these assumptions, $A$ is a twisted Frobenius extension of $B$. This generalizes a result o…
Let $i: A\to R$ be a ring morphism, and $χ: R\to A$ a right $R$-linear map with $χ(χ(r)s)=χ(rs)$ and $χ(1_R)=1_A$. If $R$ is a Frobenius $A$-ring, then we can define a trace map $\tr: A\to A^R$. If there exists an element of trace 1 in $A$, then $A$ is right FBN if and only if $A^R$ is right FBN and $A$ is right noetherian. The result can be generalized to the case where $R$ is an $I$-Frobenius $A$-ring, and the condition on the trace can be replaced by a weaker condition. We recover results of Garc\'ıa and del R\'ıo and by Dǎscǎlescu, Kelarev and Torrecillas on actions of group and Hopf algeb…
This note presents some results on projective modules and the Grothendieck groups K_0 and G_0 for Frobenius algebras and for certain Hopf Galois extensions. Our principal technical tools are the Higman trace for Frobenius algebras and a product formula for Hattori-Stallings ranks of projectives over Hopf Galois extensions.
A.S. Dugas and R. Martínez-Villa proved in \cite[Corollary 5.1]{dm} that if there exists a stable equivalence of Morita type between the $k$-algebras $Λ$ and $Γ$, then it is possible to replace $Λ$ by a Morita equivalent $k$-algebra $Δ$ such that $Γ$ is a subring of $Δ$ and the induction and restriction functors induce inverse stable equivalences. In this note we give an affirmative answer to a question of Alex Dugas about the existence of a $Γ$-coring structure on $Δ$. We do this by showing that $Δ$ is a Frobenius extension of $Γ$.
A pair of adjoint functors $(F,G)$ is called a Frobenius pair of the second type if $G$ is a left adjoint of $βFα$ for some category equivalences $α$ and $β$. Frobenius ring extensions of the second kind provide examples of Frobenius pairs of the second kind. We study Frobenius pairs of the second kind between categories of modules, comodules, and comodules over a coring. We also show that a finitely generated projective Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is always a Frobenius extension of the second kind, and prove that the integral spaces of the Hopf algebra and its dual are isomorphic.
MacWilliams proved that every finite field has the extension property for Hamming weight which was later extended in a seminal work by Wood who characterized finite Frobenius rings as precisely those rings which satisfy the MacWilliams extension property. In this paper, the question of when is a MacWilliams ring quasi-Frobenius is addressed. It is proved that a right or left noetherian left 1-MacWilliams ring is quasi-Frobenius thus answering the different questions asked in [M. C. Iovanov, On infinite MacWilliams rings and minimal injectivity conditions, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., DOI: 10.1090/p…
Let $\Cc$ and $\Dd$ be two corings over a ring $A$ and $\Cc\stackrelλ{\longrightarrow}\Dd$ be a morphism of corings. We investigate the situation when the associated induced ("corestriction of scalars") functor $\Mm^\Cc\longrightarrow \Mm^\Dd$ is a Frobenius functor, and call these morphisms Frobenius extensions of corings. The characterization theorem generalizes notions such as Frobenius corings and is applied to several situations; in particular, provided some (general enough) flatness conditions hold, the notion proves to be dual to that of Frobenius extensions of rings (algebras). Several…
We prove that for a Frobenius extension, a module over the extension ring is Gorenstein projective if and only if its underlying module over the base ring is Gorenstein projective. For a separable Frobenius extension between Artin algebras, we obtain that the extension algebra is CM-finite (resp. CM-free) if and only if so is the base algebra. Furthermore, we prove that the reprensentation dimension of Artin algebras is invariant under separable Forbenius extensions.
We investigate adjoint and Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting and in graded ring theory.
We study a Hopf algebra $H$, which is finitely generated and projective over a commutative ring $k$, as a $P$-Frobenius algebra. We define modular functions in this setting, and provide a complete proof of Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode, using Frobenius algebraic techniques. As further applications, we extend Etingof and Gelaki's result that a separable and coseparable Hopf algebra has antipode of order two, the result of Schneider that Hopf subalgebras are twisted Frobenius extensions, and show that the quantum double is always a Frobenius algebra.
We study Frobenius extensions which are free-filtered by a totally ordered, finitely generated abelian group, and their free-graded counterparts. First we show that the Frobenius property passes up from a free-graded extension to a free-filtered extension, then also from a free-filtered extension to the extension of their Rees algebras. Our main theorem states that, under some natural hypotheses, a free-filtered extension of algebras is Frobenius if and only if the associated graded extension is Frobenius. In the final section we apply this theorem to provide new examples and non-examples of F…
We define twisted Frobenius extensions of graded superrings. We develop equivalent definitions in terms of bimodule isomorphisms, trace maps, bilinear forms, and dual sets of generators. The motivation for our study comes from categorification, where one is often interested in the adjointness properties of induction and restriction functors. We show that $A$ is a twisted Frobenius extension of $B$ if and only if induction of $B$-modules to $A$-modules is twisted shifted right adjoint to restriction of $A$-modules to $B$-modules. A large (non-exhaustive) class of examples is given by the fact t…
We provide new characterizations of pseudo-Frobenius and quasi-Frobenius rings in terms of tight modules. In the process, we also provide fresh perspectives on FGF and CF conjectures. In particular, we propose new natural extensions of these conjectures which connect them with the classical theory of PF rings. Our techniques are mainly based on set-theoretic counting arguments initiated by Osofsky. Several corollaries and examples to illustrate their applications are given.
We give a sufficient condition for a bi-invariant weight on a Frobenius bimodule to satisfy the extension property. This condition applies to bi-invariant weights on a finite Frobenius ring as a special case. The complex-valued functions on a Frobenius bimodule are viewed as a module over the semigroup ring of the multiplicative semigroup of the coefficient ring.
We characterize Frobenius and separable monoidal algebra extensions $i: R\ra S$ in terms given by $R$ and $S$. For instance, under some conditions, we show that the extension is Frobenius, respectively separable, if and only if $S$ is a Frobenius, respectively separable, algebra in the category of bimodules over $R$. In the case when $R$ is separable we show that the extension is separable if and only if $S$ is a separable algebra. Similarly, in the case when $R$ is Frobenius and separable in a sovereign monoidal category we show that the extension is Frobenius if and only if $S$ is a Frobeniu…
In this paper we study codes where the alphabet is a finite Frobenius bimodule over a finite ring. We discuss the extension property for various weight functions. Employing an entirely character-theoretic approach and a duality theory for partitions on Frobenius bimodules we derive alternative proofs for the facts that the Hamming weight and the homogeneous weight satisfy the extension property. We also use the same techniques to derive the extension property for other weights, such as the Rosenbloom-Tsfasman weight.
We show how the existence of a PBW-basis and a large enough central subalgebra can be used to deduce that an algebra is Frobenius. This is done by considering the examples of rational Cherednik algebras, Hecke algebras, quantised universal enveloping algebras, quantum Borels and quantised function algebras. In particular, we give a positive answer to \cite[Problem 6]{Rouquier} stating that the restricted rational Cherednik algebra at the value $t=0$ is symmetric.
We study a symmetric Markov extension of k-algebras N \into M, a certain kind of Frobenius extension with conditional expectation that is tracial on the centralizer and dual bases with a separability property. We place a depth two condition on this extension, which is essentially the requirement that the Jones tower N \into M \into M_1 \into M_2 can be obtained by taking relative tensor products with centralizers A = C_{M_1}(N) and B = C_{M_2}(M). Under this condition, we prove that N \into M is the invariant subalgebra pair of a weak Hopf algebra action by A, i.e., that N = M^A. The endomorph…
Centrosymmetric matrices of order $n$ over an arbitrary algebra $R$ form a subalgebra of the full $n\times n$ matrix algebra over $R$. It is called the centrosymmetric matrix algebra of order $n$ over $R$ and denoted by $S_n(R)$. We prove (1) $S_n(R)$ is Morita equivalent to $S_2(R)$ if $n$ is even, and to $S_3(R)$ if $n\ge 3$ is odd; (2) the full $n\times n$ matrix algebra over $R$ is a separable Frobenius extension of $S_n(R)$; and (3) if $R$ is a commutative ring, then $S_n(R)$ is a cellular $R$-algebra in the sense of Graham-Lehrer for all $n\ge 1$.
We establish relations between Frobenius parts and between flat-dominant dimensions of algebras linked by Frobenius bimodules. This is motivated by the Nakayama conjecture and an approach of Martinez-Villa to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture on stable equivalences. We show that the Frobenius parts of Frobenius extensions are again Frobenius extensions. Further, let $A$ and $B$ be finite-dimensional algebras over a field $k$, and let $\dm(_AX)$ stand for the dominant dimension of an $A$-module $X$. If $_BM_A$ is a Frobenius bimodule, then $\dm(A)\le \dm(_BM)$ and $\dm(B)\le \dm(_A\Hom_B(M, B))$.…
We establish relations between Gorenstein projective precovers linked by Frobenius functors. This is motivated by an open problem that how to find general classes of rings for which modules have Gorenstein projective precovers. It is shown that if $F:\C\rightarrow\D$ is a separable Frobenius functor between abelian categories with enough projective objects, then every object in $\C$ has a Gorenstein projective precover provided that every object in $\D$ has a Gorenstein projective precover. This result is applied to separable Frobenius extensions and excellent extensions.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$. It is proved that each automorphism $\s \in \Aut_K(\CDPn)$ of the ring $\CDPn$ of differential operators on a polynomial algebra $P_n= K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ is {\em uniquely} determined by the elements $\s (x_1), ... ,\s (x_n)$, and the set $\Frob (\CDPn)$ of all the extensions of the Frobenius from certain maximal commutative polynomial subalgebras of $\CDPn$, like $P_n$, is equal to $\Aut_K(\CDPn) \cdot \CF$ where $\CF$ is the set of all the extensions of the Frobenius from $P_n$ to $\CDPn$ that leave invariant the subalgebra of scalar differential ope…
A minimum depth d^I(S --> R) is assigned to a ring homomorphism S --> R and a R-R-bimodule I. The recent notion of depth of a subring d(S,R)in a paper by Boltje-Danz-Kuelshammer is recovered when I = R and S --> R is the inclusion mapping. Ideal depth gives lower bounds for d(S,R) in case of group C-algebra pair or semisimple complex algebra extensions. If R | S is a QF extension of finite depth, minimum left and right even depth are shown to coincide. If R < S is moreover a Frobenius extension with R a right S-generator, its subring depth is shown to coincide with its tower depth. In the proc…
We define left relative H-separable tower of rings and continue a study of these begun by Sugano. It is proven that a progenerator extension has right depth two if and only if the ring extension together with its right endomorphism ring is a left relative H-separable tower. In particular, this applies to twisted or ordinary Frobenius extensions with surjective Frobenius homomorphism. For example, normality for Hopf subalgebras of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras is also characterized in terms of this tower condition.
A conjecture by the second author, proven by Bonnafé-Rouquier, says that the multiplicity matrix for baby Verma modules over the restricted rational Cherednik algebra has rank one over $\mathbb{Q}$ when restricted to each block of the algebra. In this paper, we show that if $H$ is a prime algebra that is a free Frobenius extension over a regular central subalgebra $R$, and the centre of $H$ is normal Gorenstein, then each central quotient $A$ of $H$ by a maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ of $R$ satisfies the rank one property with respect to the Cartan matrix of $A$. Examples where the result is ap…
The notion of a Frobenius coring is introduced, and it is shown that any such coring produces a tower of Frobenius corings and Frobenius extensions. This establishes a one-to-one correspondence between Frobenius corings and extensions.
Given a morphism of (small) groupoids with injective object map, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions under which the induction and co-induction functors between the categories of linear representations are naturally isomorphic. A morphism with this property is termed a Frobenius morphism of groupoids. As a consequence, an extension by a subgroupoid is Frobenius if and only if each fibre of the (left or right) pull-back biset has finitely many orbits. Our results extend and clarify the classical Frobenius reciprocity formulae in the theory of finite groups, and characterize Frobenius…
In this paper we show that for an important class of non-trivial Hopf algebras, the Schur indicator is a computable invariant. The Hopf algebras we consider are all abelian extensions; as a special case, they include the Drinfeld double of a group algebra. In addition to finding a general formula for the indicator, we also study when it is always positive. In particular we prove that the indicator is always positive for the Drinfeld double of the symmetric group, generalizing the classical result for the symmetric group itself.

We study Galois extensions Coinv(M)<M for M an H-comodule algebra and H a Frobenius Hopf algebroid. We obtain generalizations of various theorems in Hopf-Galois theory by Kreimer-Takeuchi, Doi-Takeuchi and Cohen-Fischman-Montgomery. An algebra extension is Galois precisely if it is balanced, depth 2, and Frobenius. Then we show that Yetter-Drinfeld categories over H are always braided and their braided commutative algebras play the role of noncommutative scalar extensions by the Brzezinski-Militaru Theorem. Contravariant "fiber functors" are used to prove an analogue of Ulbrich's Theorem and t…
We present a unified apoach to the study of separable and Frobenius algebras. The crucial observation is thsat both cases are related to the nonlinear equation $R^{12}R^{23}=R^{23}R^{13}=R^{13}R^{12}$, called the FS-equation. Given a solution of the FS-equation satisfying certain normalizing conditions, we can construct a Frobenius algebra or a separable algebra A(R). The main result of this paper in the structure of this two fundamental types of algebras: a finitely generated projective Frobenius or separable $k$-algebra $A$ is isomorphic to such A(R). If $A$ is free as a $k$-module, then A(R…
A finite ring R and a weight w on R satisfy the Extension Property if every R-linear w-isometry between two R-linear codes in R^n extends to a monomial transformation of R^n that preserves w. MacWilliams proved that finite fields with the Hamming weight satisfy the Extension Property. It is known that finite Frobenius rings with either the Hamming weight or the homogeneous weight satisfy the Extension Property. Conversely, if a finite ring with the Hamming or homogeneous weight satisfies the Extension Property, then the ring is Frobenius. This paper addresses the question of a characterization…
We introduce the notion of totally reflexive extension of rings. It unifies Gorenstein orders and Frobenius extensions. We prove that for a totally reflexive extension, a module over the extension ring is totally reflexive if and only if its underlying module over the base ring is totally reflexive.
Depth three and finite depth are notions known for subfactors via diagrams and Frobenius extensions of rings via centralizers in endomorphism towers. From the point of view of depth two ring extensions, we provide a clear definition of depth three for a tower of three rings C < B < A. If A = B_C and B | C is a Frobenius extension, this captures the notion of depth three for a Frobenius extension. For example we provide an algebraic proof that if B | C is depth three, then A | C is depth two. If A, B and C correspond to a tower of subgroups G > H > K via the group algebra over a fixed base ring…
We introduce a general notion of depth two for ring homomorphism N --> M, and derive Morita equivalence of the step one and three centralizers, R = C_M(N) and C = End_{N-M}(M ø_N M), via dual bimodules and step two centralizers A = End_NM_N and B = (M ø_N M)^N, in a Jones tower above N --> M. Lu's bialgebroids End_k A' and A' ø_k {A'}^op over a k-algebra A' are generalized to left and right bialgebroids A and B with B the R-dual bialgebroid of A. We introduce Galois-type actions of A on M and B on End_NM when M_N is a balanced module. In the case of Frobenius extensions M | N, we prove an endo…
Finite Frobenius rings have been characterized as precisely those finite rings satisfying the MacWilliams extension property, by work of Wood. In the present note we offer a generalization of this remarkable result to the realm of Artinian rings. Namely, we prove that a left Artinian ring has the left MacWilliams property if and only if it is left pseudo-injective and its finitary left socle embeds into the semisimple quotient. Providing a topological perspective on the MacWilliams property, we also show that the finitary left socle of a left Artinian ring embeds into the semisimple quotient i…
We bring together ideas in analysis of Hopf *-algebra actions on II_1 subfactors of finite Jones index and algebraic characterizations of Frobenius, Galois and cleft Hopf extensions to prove a non-commutative algebraic analogue of the classical theorem: a finite field extension is Galois iff it is separable and normal. Suppose N < M is a separable Frobenius extension of k-algebras split as N-bimodules with a trivial centralizer C_M(N). Let M_1 := End(M)_N and M_2 := End(M_1)_M be the endomorphism algebras in the Jones tower N < M < M_1 < M_2. We show that under depth 2 conditions on the second…
We generalise notions of Gorenstein homological algebra for rings to the context of arbitrary abelian categories. The results are strongest for module categories of rngs with enough idempotents. We also reformulate the notion of Frobenius extensions of noetherian rings into a setting which allows for direct generalisation to arbitrary abelian categories. The abstract theory is then applied to the BGG category O for Lie superalgebras, which can now be seen as a "Frobenius extension" of the corresponding category for the underlying Lie algebra and is therefore "Gorenstein". In particular we obta…
We introduce a notion of depth three tower of three rings C < B < A as a useful generalization of depth two ring extension. If A = End B_C and B | C is a Frobenius extension, this also captures the notion of depth three for a Frobenius extension in math.RA/0107064 and math.RA/0108067 such that if B | C is depth three, then A | C is depth two (cf. math.QA/0001020). If A, B and C correspond to a tower of subgroups G > H > K via the group algebra over a fixed base ring, the depth three condition is the condition that subgroup K has normal closure K^G contained in H. For a depth three tower of rin…
Given an $n\times n$ matrix $c$ over a unitary ring $R$, the centralizer of $c$ in the full $n\times n$ matrix ring $M_n(R)$ is called a principal centralizer matrix ring, denoted by $S_n(c,R)$. We investigate its structure and prove: $(1)$ If $c$ is an invertible matrix with a $c$-free point, or if $R$ has no zero-divisors and $c$ is a Jordan-similar matrix with all eigenvalues in the center of $R$, then $M_n(R)$ is a separable Frobenius extension of $S_{n}(c,R)$ in the sense of Kasch. $(2)$ If $R$ is an integral domain and $c$ is a Jordan-similar matrix, then $S_n(c,R)$ is a cellular $R$-alg…
The MacWilliams extension theorem is investigated for various weight functions over finite Frobenius rings. The problem is reformulated in terms of a local-global property for subgroups of the general linear group. Among other things, it is shown that the extension theorem holds true for poset weights if and only if the underlying poset is hierarchical. Specifically, the Rosenbloom-Tsfasman weight for vector codes satisfies the extension theorem, whereas the Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman weight for matrix codes does not. A short character-theoretic proof of the well-known MacWilliams extens…
