Given an $n\times n$ matrix $c$ over a unitary ring $R$, the centralizer of $c$ in the full $n\times n$ matrix ring $M_n(R)$ is called a principal centralizer matrix ring, denoted by $S_n(c,R)$. We investigate its structure and prove: $(1)$ If $c$ is an invertible matrix with a $c$-free point, or if $R$ has no zero-divisors and $c$ is a Jordan-similar matrix with all eigenvalues in the center of $R$, then $M_n(R)$ is a separable Frobenius extension of $S_{n}(c,R)$ in the sense of Kasch. $(2)$ If $R$ is an integral domain and $c$ is a Jordan-similar matrix, then $S_n(c,R)$ is a cellular $R$-algebra in the sense of Graham and Lehrer. In particular, if $R$ is an algebraically closed field and $c$ is an arbitrary matrix in $M_n(R)$, then $S_n(c,R)$ is always a cellular algebra, and the extension $S_n(c,R)\subseteq M_n(R)$ is always a separable Frobenius extension.
Generalizing the centralizer construction of Molev and Olshanski on symmetric groups, we study the structures of the centralizer $\mZ_{m,n}$ of the wreath product $G_{n-m}$ in the group algebra of $G_n$ for any $n\geq m$. We establish the connection between $\mZ_{m,n}$ and a generalization of degenerate affine Hecke algebras introduced in our earlier work.
In our recent papers the centralizer construction was applied to the series of classical Lie algebras to produce the quantum algebras called (twisted) Yangians. Here we extend this construction to the series of the symmetric groups S(n). We study the `stable' properties of the centralizers of S(n-m) in the group algebra C[S(n)] as n increases with m fixed. We construct a limit centralizer algebra A and describe its algebraic structure. The algebra A turns out to be closely related with the degenerate affine Hecke algebras. We also show that the so-called tame representations of the infinite sy…
We construct an explicit set of algebraically independent generators for the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the centralizer of a nilpotent matrix in the Lie algebra gl_N(C). In particular, this gives a new proof of the freeness of the center, a result first proved by Panyushev, Premet and Yakimova (math.RT/0610049).
We study the Loewy structure of the centralizer algebra kP^Q for P a p-group with subgroup Q and k a field of characteristic p. Here kP^Q is a special type of Hecke algebra. The main tool we employ is the decomposition of kP^Q as a split extension of a nilpotent ideal I by the group algebra kC_P(Q). We compute the Loewy structure for several classes of groups, investigate the symmetry of the Loewy series, and give upper and lower bounds on the Loewy length of $P^Q. Several of these results were discovered through the use of MAGMA, especially the general pattern for most of our computations. As…
The centralizer algebra of the action of the unitary group on the real tensor powers of its natural module, is described by means of a modification in the multiplication of the signed Brauer algebras. The relationships of this algebra with the invariants for U(n), and with the decomposition of the above tensor powers into irreducible modules, is considered.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the finite group which appears in the study of the Type II $\mathbf{Z}_4$-codes. To be precise, it is characterized in terms of generators and relations, and we determine the structure of the centralizer algebras of the tensor representations of this group.
We use affine W-algebras to quantize Mishchenko-Fomenko subalgebras for centralizers of nilpotent elements in simple Lie algebras under certain assumptions that are satisfied for all cases in type A and all minimal nilpotent cases outside type $E_8$.
How far can the elementary description of centralizers of parabolic subalgebras of Hecke algebras of finite real reflection groups be generalized to the complex reflection group case? In this paper we begin to answer this question by establishing results in two directions. First, under conditions closely analogous to those existing for the real case, we give explicit relations between coefficients in an element centralizing a generator. Second, we introduce a tool for dealing with a major challenge of the complex case -- the ``instability'' of certain double cosets -- through the definition an…
For a finite dimensional complex Lie algebra, its index is the minimal dimension of stabilizers for the coadjoint action. A famous conjecture due to Elashvili says that the index of the centralizer of an element of a reductive Lie algebra is equal to the rank. That conjecture caught attention of several Lie theorists for years. In this paper we give an almost general proof of that conjecture.
We consider the affine vertex algebra at the critical level associated with the centralizer of a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. Due to a recent result of Arakawa and Premet, the center of this vertex algebra is an algebra of polynomials. We construct a family of free generators of the center in an explicit form. As a corollary, we obtain generators of the corresponding quantum shift of argument subalgebras and recover free generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the centralizer produced earlier by Brown and Brundan.
Among the unitary reflection groups, the one on the title is singled out by its importance in, for example, coding theory and number theory. In this paper we start with describing the irreducible representations of this group and then examine the semi-simple structure of the centralizer algebra in the tensor representation.
We define an action of the degenerate two boundary braid algebra $\mathcal{G}_d$ on the $\mathbb{C}$-vector space $M\otimes N\otimes V^{\otimes d}$, where $M$ and $N$ are arbitrary modules for the general linear Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(n|m)$, and $V$ is the natural representation. When $M$ and $N$ are parametrized by rectangular hook Young diagrams, this action factors through a quotient $\mathcal{H}^{\operatorname{ext}}_d$. The irreducible summands of $M\otimes N\otimes V^{\otimes d}$ for the centralizer of $\mathfrak{gl}(n|m)$, remain irreducible once regarded as modules for this quo…
We provide an explicit isomorphism between a quotient of the Bannai--Ito algebra and the Brauer algebra. We clarify also the connection with the action of the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2) on the threefold tensor product of its fundamental representation. Finally, a conjecture is proposed to describe the centralizer of osp(1|2) acting on three copies of an arbitrary finite irreducible representation in terms of a quotient of the Bannai-Ito algebra.
We show that ${\rm End}_{\bf U}(V_λ\otimes V^{\otimes n})$ is generated by the affine braid group $AB_n$ where ${\bf U}=U_q\mathfrak g(G_2)$, $V$ is its 7-dimensional irreducible representation and $V_λ$ is an arbitrary irreducible representation.
We review and introduce several approaches to the study of centralizer algebras of the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our study is led by the double commutant relationships between finite symmetric groups and partition algebras; each approach produces a centralizer algebra that is contained in a partition algebra. Our goal is to incorporate invariants of $S_\infty$, which ties our work to the study of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables. We resultantly explore sequence spaces as permutation modules, which yields families of non-unitary representations of $S_\infty$.
Diagram algebras (e.g. graded braid groups, Hecke algebras, Brauer algebras) arise as tensor power centralizer algebras, algebras of commuting operators for a Lie algebra action on a tensor space. This work explores centralizers of the action of a complex reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ on tensor space of the form $M \otimes N \otimes V^{\otimes k}$. We define the degenerate two-boundary braid algebra $\mathcal{G}_k$ and show that centralizer algebras contain quotients of this algebra in a general setting. As an example, we study in detail the combinatorics of special cases corresponding …
We introduce a new family of affine $W$-algebras associated with the centralizers of arbitrary nilpotent elements in $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. We define them by using a version of the BRST complex of the quantum Drinfeld--Sokolov reduction. A family of free generators of the new algebras is produced in an explicit form. We also give an analogue of the Fateev--Lukyanov realization for these algebras by applying a Miura-type map.
We introduce a new family of Poisson vertex algebras $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ analogous to the classical $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. The algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is associated with the centralizer $\mathfrak{a}$ of an arbitrary nilpotent element in $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. We show that $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is an algebra of polynomials in infinitely many variables and produce its free generators in an explicit form. This implies that $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is isomorphic to the center at the critical level of the affine vertex algebra associated with $\mathfrak{a}$.
We use Cvitanovic's diagrammatic techniques to construct the rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated with the $e_6$ and $e_7$ families of Lie algebras, and thus explain Westbury's observations about their uniform spectral decompositions. In doing so we explore the extensions of the Brauer and symmetric group algebras to the centralizer algebras of $e_7$ and $e_6$ on their lowest-dimensional representations and (up to three-fold) tensor products thereof, giving bases for them and a number of identities satisfied by the algebras' defining invariant tensors.
For a finite subgroup $G$ of the special unitary group $SU_2$, we study the centralizer algebra $Z_k(G) = End_G(V^{\otimes k})$ of $G$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor product of its defining representation $V= \mathbb{C}^2$. These subgroups are in bijection with the simply-laced affine Dynkin diagrams. The McKay correspondence relates the representation theory of these groups to the associated Dynkin diagram, and we use this connection to show that the structure and representation theory of $Z_k(G)$ as a semisimple algebra is controlled by the combinatorics of the corresponding Dynkin diagram.
The centralizer of the image of the diagonal embedding of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ in the tensor product of three irreducible representations is examined in a Schur-Weyl duality spirit. The aim is to offer a description in terms of generators and relations. A conjecture in this respect is offered with the centralizers presented as quotients of the Askey-Wilson algebra. Support for the conjecture is provided by an examination of the representations of the quotients. The conjecture is also shown to be true in a number of cases thereby exhibiting in particular the Temperley-Lieb, Birman-Murakami-We…
We pursue an analogy of the Schur-Weyl reciprocity for the spinor groups and pick up the irreducible spin representations in the tensor space $Δ\textstyle{\bigotimes \bigotimes^k V}$. Here $Δ$ is the fundamental representation of $Pin(N)$ and $V$ is the natural (vector) representation of the orthogonal group O(N). We consider the centralizer algebra $\mathbf{CP_k} = Pin(N)(Δ\textstyle{\bigotimes \bigotimes^k V})$ for $Pin(N)$, the double covering group of O(N) and define two kinds of linear basis in $\mathbf{CP_k}$ (one comes from invariant theory and the other from representation theory), bot…
We prove an analogue of the Sylvester theorem for the generator matrices of the quantum affine algebra ${\rm U}_q(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_n)$. We then use it to give an explicit realization of the skew representations of the quantum affine algebra. This allows one to identify them in a simple way by calculating their highest weight, Drinfeld polynomials and the Gelfand-Tsetlin character (or $q$-character). We also apply the quantum Sylvester theorem to construct a $q$-analogue of the Olshanski algebra as a projective limit of certain centralizers in ${\rm U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ and show that this …
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra of rank $\ell$ over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic zero, and let $(e,h,f)$ be an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple of g. Denote by $\mathfrak{g}^{e}$ the centralizer of $e$ in $\mathfrak{g}$ and by ${\rm S}(\mathfrak{g}^{e})^{\mathfrak{g}^{e}}$ the algebra of symmetric invariants of $\mathfrak{g}^{e}$. We say that $e$ is good if the nullvariety of some $\ell$ homogenous elements of ${\rm S}(\mathfrak{g}^{e})^{\mathfrak{g}^{e}}$ in $(\mathfrak{g}^{e})^{*}$ has codimension $\ell$. If $e$ is good then ${\rm S}(\mathfrak…
Let g be a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra of rank r over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and let e be a nilpotent element of g. Denote by g^e the centralizer of e in g and by S(g^e)^{g^e} the algebra of symmetric invariants of g^e. We say that e is good if the nullvariety of some r homogeneous elements of S(g^e)^{g^e} in the dual of g^{e} has codimension r. If e is good then S(g^e)^{g^e} is polynomial. The main result of this paper stipulates that if for some homogeneous generators of S(g^e)^{g^e}, the initial homogeneous component of their restrictions to e+g^f ar…
An algebra $V$ with a cross product $\times$ has dimension 3 or 7. In this work, we use 3-tangles to describe, and provide a basis for, the space of homomorphisms from $V^{\otimes n}$ to $V^{\otimes m}$ that are invariant under the action of the automorphism group $Aut(V,\times)$ of $V$, which is a special orthogonal group when $dim V = 3$, and a simple algebraic group of type $G_2$ when $dim V= 7$. When $m = n$, this gives a graphical description of the centralizer algebra $End_{Aut(V,\times)}(V^{\otimes n})$, and therefore, also a graphical realization of the $Aut(V,\times)$-invariants in $V…
We introduce a class of permutation centralizer algebras which underly the combinatorics of multi-matrix gauge invariant observables. One family of such non-commutative algebras is parametrised by two integers. Its Wedderburn-Artin decomposition explains the counting of restricted Schur operators, which were introduced in the physics literature to describe open strings attached to giant gravitons and were subsequently used to diagonalize the Gaussian inner product for gauge invariants of 2-matrix models. The structure of the algebra, notably its dimension, its centre and its maximally commutin…
The number of walks of $k$ steps from the node $\mathsf{0}$ to the node $λ$ on the representation graph (McKay quiver) determined by a finite group $\mathsf{G}$ and a $\mathsf{G}$-module $\mathsf{V}$ is the multiplicity of the irreducible $\mathsf{G}$-module $\mathsf{G}_λ$ in the tensor power $\mathsf{V}^{\otimes k}$, and it is also the dimension of the irreducible module labeled by $λ$ for the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(\mathsf{G}) = {\mathsf{End}}_\mathsf{G}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$. This paper explores ways to effectively calculate that number using the character theory of $\mathsf{G…
Let $G$ be the Lie group $SO_e(4,1)$, with maximal compact subgroup $K = S(O(4) \times O(1))_e\cong SO(4)$. Let $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(5,\mathbb{C})$ be the complexification of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_0 = \mathfrak{so}(4,1)$ of $G$, and let $U(\mathfrak{g})$ be the universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p}$ be the Cartan decomposition of $\mathfrak{g}$, and $C(\mathfrak{p})$ the Clifford algebra of $\mathfrak{p}$ with respect to the trace form $B(X, Y) = \text{tr}(XY)$ on $\mathfrak{p}$. In this paper we give explicit genera…
In continuation of our recent work arXiv:2006.07312, we classify the extremal traces on infinite diagram algebras that appear in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for Banica and Speicher's easy groups. We show that the branching graphs of these algebras describe walks on new variations of the Young graph which describe curious ways of growing Young diagrams. As a consequence, we prove that the extremal traces on generic rook-Brauer algebras are always extensions of extremal traces on the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[S_{\infty}]$ of the infinite symmetric group. Moreover, we conjecture that the sa…
We define the degenerate two boundary affine Hecke-Clifford algebra $\mathcal{H}_d$, and show it admits a well-defined $\mathfrak{q}(n)$-linear action on the tensor space $M\otimes N\otimes V^{\otimes d}$, where $V$ is the natural module for $\mathfrak{q}(n)$, and $M, N$ are arbitrary modules for $\mathfrak{q}(n)$, the Lie superalgebra of Type Q. When $M$ and $N$ are irreducible highest weight modules parameterized by a staircase partition and a single row, respectively, this action factors through a quotient of $\mathcal{H}_d$. We then construct explicit modules for this quotient, $\mathcal{H…
In this paper we study the tensor powers of the standard representation of the quantum super-algebra $U_q(sl(2|1)$, focusing on the rings of its algebra endomorphisms, called centraliser algebras and denoted by $LG_n$. Their dimensions were conjectured by I. Marin and E. Wagner \cite{MW}. We prove this conjecture, describing the intertwiner spaces from a semi-simple decomposition as sets consisting of certain paths in a planar lattice with integer coordinates. Using this model, we present a matrix unit basis for the centraliser algebra $LG_n$, by means of closed curves in the plane, which are …
Let $\frak{g} = \frak{k} +\frak{p}$ be a complexified Cartan decomposition of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ and let $K$ be the subgroup of the adjoint group of $\frak{g}$ corresponding to $\frak{k} $. If $H$ is an irreducible Harish-Chandra module of $U(\frak{g})$, then $H$ is completely determined by the finite-dimensional action of the centralizer $U(\frak{g})^K$ on any one fixed primary $\k$ component in $H$. This original approach of Harish-Chandra to a determination of all $H$ has largely been abandoned because one knows very little about generators of $U(\frak{g})^K$. Gener…
We prove that the centralizer algebras of the symplectic and orthogonal group acting on tensor space are cellular algebras over the integers. We do this by providing an axiomatic framework for studying quotient towers for towers of diagram algebras. Our framework covers the centralizer algebras of the general linear group acting on mixed tensor space as well. We also provide descriptions of the kernels of the homomorphisms from the diagrammatic versions of the algebras to the centralizer algebras on tensor space, which constitute versions of the second fundamental theorem of invariant theory.
Let $p$ be a an odd prime and let $G$ be a finite $p$-group with cyclic commutator subgroup $G'$. We prove that the exponent and the abelianization of the centralizer of $G'$ in $G$ are determined by the group algebra of $G$ over any field of characteristic $p$. If, additionally, $G$ is $2$-generated then almost all the numerical invariants determining $G$ up to isomorphism are determined by the same group algebras; as a consequence the isomorphism type of the centralizer of $G'$ is determined. These claims are known to be false for $p=2$.
Consider the complex matrix Lie superalgebra $gl_{N|N}$ with the standard generators $E_{ij}$ where $i,j=-N,...,-1,1,...,N$. Define an involutive automorphism $η$ of $gl_{N|N}$ by $η(E_{ij})=E_{-i,-j}$. The queer Lie superalgebra $q_N$ is the fixed point subalgebra in $gl_{N|N}$ relative to the automorphism $η$. Consider the twisted polynomial current Lie superalgebra $g=\{X(t)\in\gl_{N|N}[t]:η(X(t))=X(-t)\}$. The enveloping algebra $U(g)$ of the Lie superalgebra $g$ has a deformation, called the Yangian of $q_N$. For each $M=1,2,...$ denote by $A_N^M$ the centralizer of $q_M\subset q_{N+M}$ i…
Olshanski's centralizer construction provides a realization of the Yangian for the Lie algebra gl(n) as a subalgebra in the projective limit of a chain of centralizers in the universal enveloping algebras. We give a modified version of this construction based on a quantum analog of Sylvester's theorem. We then use it to get an algebra homomorphism from the Yangian to the transvector algebra associated with the general linear Lie algebras. The results are applied to identify the elementary representations of the Yangian by constructing their highest vectors explicitly in terms of elements of th…
For each element of the Fischer-Griess Monster sporadic simple group, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra equipped with a projective action of the centralizer of that element. Our construction is given by a string-theoretic "add a spacetime torus and quantize" functor applied to an abelian intertwining algebra that is formed from a family of twisted modules of the Monster vertex operator algebra. We prove that for all Fricke elements in the Monster, the characters of centralizers acting on the corresponding irreducible twisted modules are Hauptmoduln. From these results, we resolv…
We identify the dimension of the centralizer of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_d$ in the partition algebra $\mathcal{A}_d(δ)$ and in the Brauer algebra $\mathcal{B}_d(δ)$ with the number of multidigraphs with $d$ arrows and the number of disjoint union of directed cycles with $d$ arrows, respectively. Using Schur-Weyl duality as a fundamental theory, we conclude that each centralizer is related with the $G$-invariant space $P^d(M_n(\mathbf{k}))^G$ of degree $d$ homogeneous polynomials on $n \times n$ matrices, where $G$ is the orthogonal group and the group of permutation matrices, respecti…
We introduce the \emph{linear centralizer method}, and use it to devise a provable polynomial time solution of the Commutator Key Exchange Problem, the computational problem on which, in the passive adversary model, the security of the Anshel--Anshel--Goldfeld 1999 \emph{Commutator} key exchange protocol is based. We also apply this method to the computational problem underlying the \emph{Centralizer} key exchange protocol, introduced by Shpilrain and Ushakov in 2006. This is the first provable polynomial time cryptanalysis of the Commutator key exchange protocol, hitherto the most important k…
We give a combinatorial description of a new diagram algebra, the partial Temperley--Lieb algebra, arising as the generic centralizer algebra $\mathrm{End}_{\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)}(V^{\otimes k})$, where $V = V(0) \oplus V(1)$ is the direct sum of the trivial and natural module for the quantized enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_2)$. It is a proper subalgebra of the Motzkin algebra (the $\mathbf{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-centralizer) of Benkart and Halverson. We prove a version of Schur--Weyl duality for the new algebras, and describe their generic representation theory.
We investigate the structure constants of the center $\mathcal{H}_n$ of the group algebra $Sp_{n}(q)$ over a finite field. The reflection length on the group $GL_{2n}(q)$ induces a filtration on the algebras $\mathcal{H}_n$. We prove that the structure constants of the associated filtered algebra $\mathcal{S}_n$ are independent of $n$. As a technical tool in the proof, we determine the growth of the centralizers under the embedding $Sp_m(q)\subset Sp_{m+l}(q)$ and we show that the index of the centralizer of $g\in Sp_m(q)$ in the centralizer of $g\in Sp_{m+k}$ is equal to $q^{2ld}|Sp_{r+l}(q)|…
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities …
The Bannai-Ito algebra $BI(n)$ is viewed as the centralizer of the action of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in the $n$-fold tensor product of the universal algebra of this Lie superalgebra. The generators of this centralizer are constructed with the help of the universal $R$-matrix of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$. The specific structure of the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ embeddings to which the centralizing elements are attached as Casimir elements is explained. With the generators defined, the structure relations of $BI(n)$ are derived from those of $BI(3)$ by repeated action of the coproduct and using properties …
