We call a log variety (X, D) algebraically hyperbolic if there exists a positive number e such that 2g(C) - 2 + i(C, D) >= e deg(C) for all curves C on X, where i(C, D) is the number of the intersections between D and the normalization of C. Among other things, we proved that (P^2, D) is algebraically hyperbolic for a very general curve D of degree at least 5. More specifically, we showed that 2g(C) - 2 + i(C, D) >= (deg(D) - 4) deg C for all curves C on P^2. For example, fix a very general quintic curve D and then for any map f: C = P^1 --> P^2, there are at least deg(f) + 2 distinct points on C that map to points on D by f.
Adapting focal loci techniques used by Chiantini and Lopez, we provide lower bounds on the genera of curves contained in very general surfaces in Gorenstein toric threefolds. We illustrate the utility of these bounds by obtaining results on algebraic hyperbolicity of very general surfaces in toric threefolds.
Recently, Haase and Ilten initiated the study of classifying algebraically hyperbolic surfaces in toric threefolds. We complete this classification for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{F}_e \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^3$ at a point, augmenting our earlier work on $\mathbb{P}^3$. In the process, we codify several different techniques for proving algebraic hyperbolicity, allowing us to prove similar results for hypersurface in any variety admitting a group action with dense orbit.
We prove that a curve of degree $dk$ on a very general surface of degree $d \geq 5$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ has geometric genus at least $\frac{dk(d-5)+k}{2} + 1$. This improves bounds given by G. Xu. As a corollary, we conclude that the very general quintic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is algebraically hyperbolic.
The moduli stacks of Calabi-Yau varieties are known to enjoy several hyperbolicity properties. The best results have so far been proven using sophisticated analytic tools such as complex Hodge theory. Although the situation is very different in positive characteristic (e.g. the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension at least 2 contains rational curves), we explain in this note how one can prove many hyperbolicity results by reduction to positive characteristic, relying ultimately on the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic developed by Ogus and Volog…
A projective manifold is algebraically hyperbolic if the degree of any curve is bounded from above by its genus times a constant, which is independent from the curve. This is a property which follows from Kobayashi hyperbolicity. We prove that hyperkahler manifolds are non algebraically hyperbolic when the Picard rank is at least 3, or if the Picard rank is 2 and the SYZ conjecture on existence of Lagrangian fibrations is true. We also prove that if the automorphism group of a hyperkahler manifold is infinite then it is algebraically non-hyperbolic.
We study the algebraic hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^m \times \mathbb{P}^n$ by using three techniques that build on past work by Ein, Voisin, Pacienza, Coskun and Riedl, and others. As a result, we completely answer the question of whether or not a very general hypersurface of bidegree $(a,b)$ in $\mathbb{P}^m \times \mathbb{P}^n$ is algebraically hyperbolic, except in $\mathbb{P}^3 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ for the bidegrees $(a,b)= (7,3), (6,3)$ and $(5,b)$ with $b\geq 3.$ As another application of these techniques, we improve the known result that very general hypers…
We introduce the notion of the $\textit{Nevanlinna pair}$ for a pair $(X, D)$, where $X$ is a projective variety and $D$ is an effective Cartier divisor on $X$. This notion links and unifies the Nevanlinna theory, the complex hyperbolicity (Brody and Kobayashi hyperbolicity), the big Picard type extension theorem (more generally the Borel hyperbolicity), as well as the algebraic hyperbolicity. The key is to use the Nevanlinna theory on parabolic Riemann surfaces recently developed by Pǎun and Sibony.
We prove that the base space of a log smooth family of log canonical pairs of log general type is of log general type as well as algebraically degenerate, when the family admits a relative good minimal model over a Zariski open subset of the base and the relative log canonical model is of maximal variation.
We investigate the stratified hyperbolicity properties of Birkar's moduli stack of log canonical (lc) stable minimal models. The main technical result is a construction of Viehweg-Zuo's system of Higgs sheaves associated with an admissible family of lc stable minimal models, using the theory of degenerations of Hodge structure and non-abelian Hodge theory.
We extend Lang's conjectures to the setting of intermediate hyperbolicity and prove two new results motivated by these conjectures. More precisely, we first extend the notion of algebraic hyperbolicity (originally introduced by Demailly) to the setting of intermediate hyperbolicity and show that this property holds if the appropriate exterior power of the cotangent bundle is ample. Then, we prove that this intermediate algebraic hyperbolicity implies the finiteness of the group of birational automorphisms and of the set of surjective maps from a given projective variety. Our work answers the a…
We show the following algebraicity result for a complex projective variety $X$ with big representation of $π_1$ into a semi-simple algebraic group: There exists a proper subvariety $Z \subset X$ such that for any algebraic curve $C$, any holomorphic map $γ:\, C \to X$ with $γ(C) \not\subset Z$ is induced from an algebraic morphism. As an application, we prove pseudo-Brody hyperbolicity of certain varieties with big reductive representations of $π_1$.
The paper is a contribution of the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic plain curve of degree at least five is hyperbolic. The main result is that the complement of a generic configuration of three quadrics is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded as well as the complement of two quadrics and a line.
We discuss the cone theorem for quasi-log schemes and the Mori hyperbolicity. In particular, we establish that the log canonical divisor of a Mori hyperbolic projective normal pair is nef if it is nef when restricted to the non-lc locus. This answers Svaldi's question completely. We also treat the uniruledness of the degenerate locus of an extremal contraction morphism for quasi-log schemes. Furthermore, we prove that every fiber of a relative quasi-log Fano scheme is rationally chain connected modulo the non-qlc locus.
For a quasi-compact Kähler manifold $U$ endowed with a nilpotent harmonic bundle whose Higgs field is injective at one point, we prove that $U$ is pseudo-algebraically hyperbolic, pseudo-Picard hyperbolic, and is of log general type. Moreover, we prove that there is a finite unramified cover $\tilde{U}$ of $U$ from a quasi-projective manifold $\tilde{U}$ so that any projective compactification of $\tilde{U}$ is pseudo-algebraically hyperbolic, pseudo-Picard hyperbolic and is of general type. As a byproduct, we establish some criterion of pseudo-Picard hyperbolicity and pseudo-algebraic hyperbo…
A projective manifold $M$ is algebraically hyperbolic if there exists a positive constant $A$ such that the degree of any curve of genus $g$ on $M$ is bounded from above by $A(g-1)$. A classical result is that Kobayashi hyperbolicity implies algebraic hyperbolicity. It is known that Kobayashi hyperbolic manifolds have finite automorphism groups. Here we prove that, more generally, algebraically hyperbolic projective manifolds have finite automorphism groups.
Let $K$ be a complete algebraically closed non-archimedean valued field of characteristic zero, and let $X$ be a finite type scheme over $K$. We say $X$ is $K$-analytically Borel hyperbolic if, for every finite type reduced scheme $S$ over $K$, every rigid analytic morphism from the rigid analytification $S^{\mathrm{an}}$ of $S$ to the rigid analytification $X^{\mathrm{an}}$ of $X$ is algebraic. Using the Viehweg-Zuo construction and the $K$-analytic big Picard theorem of Cherry-Ru, we show that, for $N \geq 3$ and $g \geq 2$, the fine moduli space $\mathcal{M}^{[N]}_{g,K}$ over $K$ of genus $…
We prove an analogue for algebraic stacks of Hermite-Minkowski's finiteness theorem from algebraic number theory, and establish a Chevalley-Weil type theorem for integral points on stacks. As an application of our results, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich conjecture for some surfaces of general type.
Demailly's conjecture, which is a consequence of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on varieties of general type, states that an algebraically hyperbolic complex projective variety is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Our aim is to provide evidence for Demailly's conjecture by verifying several predictions it makes. We first define what an algebraically hyperbolic projective variety is, extending Demailly's definition to (not necessarily smooth) projective varieties over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and we prove that this property is stable under extensions of algebraic…
We develop explicit techniques to investigate algebraic quasi-hyperbolicity of singular surfaces through the constraints imposed by symmetric differentials. We apply these methods to prove that rational curves on Barth's sextic surface, apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least four singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. On the surface classifying perfect cuboids, our methods show that rational curves, again apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least seven singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. W…
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over $\mathbb{C}$. We say that $X$ is Borel hyperbolic if, for every finite type reduced scheme $S$ over $\mathbb{C}$, every holomorphic map $S^{an}\to X^{an}$ is algebraic. We use a transcendental specialization technique to prove that $X$ is Borel hyperbolic if and only if, for every smooth affine curve $C$ over $\mathbb{C}$, every holomorphic map $C^{an}\to X^{an}$ is algebraic. We use the latter result to prove that Borel hyperbolicity shares many common features with other notions of hyperbolicity such as Kobayashi hyperbolicity.
In 1981 J.Noguchi proved that in a logarithmic algebraic manifold, having logarithmic irregularity strictly bigger than its dimension, any entire curve is algebraically degenerate. In the present paper we are interested in the case of manifolds having logarithmic irregularity equal to its dimension. We restrict our attention to Brody curves, for which we resolve the problem completely in dimension 2: Theorem: In a logarithmic surface with logarithmic irregularity 2 and logarithmic Kodaira dimension 2, any Brody curve is algebraically degenerate. We also deal with the case of arbitrary logarith…
We prove that the complement of a very generic curve of degree $d$ at least equal to 15 in the projective plane is hyperbolic in the sens of Kobayashi (here, the terminology ``very generic'' refers to complements of countable unions of proper algebraic subsets of the parameter space). We first consider the Dethloff and Lu's generalisation to the logarithmic situation of Demailly's jet bundles. We study their base loci for surfaces of log-general type in the same way as it was done in the compact case by Demailly and El Goul. With some condition on log-Chern classes, any entire holomorphic map …
Hyperbolicity cones are convex algebraic cones arising from hyperbolic polynomials. A well-understood subclass of hyperbolicity cones is that of spectrahedral cones and it is conjectured that every hyperbolicity cone is spectrahedral. In this paper we prove a weaker version of this conjecture by showing that every smooth hyperbolicity cone is the linear projection of a spectrahedral cone, that is, a spectrahedral shadow.
These notes provide an overview of various notions of hyperbolicity for varieties of log general type from the viewpoint of both arithmetic and birational geometry. The main results are based on our paper entitled "Hyperbolicity and uniformity of varieties of log general type." They are expanded notes from a minicourse the authors gave as part of the Geometry and arithmetic of orbifolds workshop at UQÁM.
The paper is a contribution to the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic curve in the projective plane is hyperbolic, provided the degree is at least five. Previously the authors treated the cases of two quadrics and a line and three quadrics. The main results are Let C be the union of three curves in P_2 whose degrees are at least two, one of which is at least three. Then for generic such configurations the complement of C is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded. The same statement holds for complements of curves in generic hypersurfaces X of degree at least five and curv…
In this article we prove that every entire curve in the complement of a generic hypersurface of degree $d\geq 586$ in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ is algebraically degenerate i.e there exists a proper subvariety which contains the entire curve.
In this article we prove that the complement of a very generic curve of degree at least equal to 14 in the complex projective plane is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi. Thus, using a new method, we improve the former known bound obtained by El Goul. We also improve the case of a very generic curve with two components.
The main goal of this work is to prove that every entire curve in a generic hypersurface of degree greater than or equal to 593 in the complex projective space of dimension 4 is algebraically degenerated i.e contained in a proper subvariety.
A major unsolved problem (according to Demailly 1997) towards the Kobayashi hyperbolicity conjecture in optimal degree is to understand jet differentials of germs of holomorphic discs that are invariant under any reparametrization of the source. The underlying group action is not reductive, but we provide a complete algorithm to generate all invariants, in arbitrary dimension n and for jets of arbitrary order k. Two main new situations are studied in great details. For jets of order 4 in dimension 4, we establish that the algebra of Demailly-Semple invariants is generated by 2835 polynomials, …
In this paper, we prove that the quasi-projective base of any maximally variational smooth family of Calabi-Yau klt pairs is both of log general type, and pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic. Moreover, such a base is Brody hyperbolic if the family is effectively parametrized.
Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the…
Projective varieties with ample cotangent bundle satisfy many notions of hyperbolicity, and one goal of this paper is to discuss generalizations to quasi-projective varieties. A major hurdle is that the naive generalization fails, i.e. the log cotangent bundle is never ample. Instead, we define a notion called almost ample which roughly asks that the log cotangent is as positive as possible. We show that all subvarieties of a quasi-projective variety with almost ample log cotangent bundle are of log general type. In addition, if one assumes globally generated then we obtain that such varieties…
Looking at the finite étale congruence covers $X(p)$ of a complex algebraic variety $X$ equipped with a variation of integral polarized Hodge structures whose period map is quasi-finite, we show that both the minimal gonality among all curves contained in $X(p)$ and the minimal volume among all subvarieties of $X(p)$ tend to infinity with $p$. This applies for example to Shimura varieties, moduli spaces of curves, moduli spaces of abelian varieties, moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau varieties, and can be made effective in many cases. The proof goes roughly as follows. We first prove a generalization…
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over ${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. We then use this fact to confirm a long-standing conjecture of Kobayashi (1970), according to which a very general algebraic hypersurface…
Hyperbolic homogeneous polynomials with real coefficients, i.e., hyperbolic real projective hypersurfaces, and their determinantal representations, play a key role in the emerging field of convex algebraic geometry. In this paper we consider a natural notion of hyperbolicity for a real subvariety $X \subset \mathbb{P}^d$ of an arbitrary codimension $\ell$ with respect to a real $\ell - 1$-dimensional linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb{P}^d$ and study its basic properties. We also consider a special kind of determinantal representations that we call Livsic-type and a nice subclass of these that…
We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for real algebraic curves near the non-singular tropical limit to be hyperbolic with respect to a point, thus generalising Speyer's classification of stable curves near the tropical limit. In order to obtain the conditions, we develop tools of real tropical intersection theory. We introduce the tropical hyperbolicity locus and the signed tropical hyperbolicity locus of a real algebraic curve near the non-singular tropical limit. In the case of honeycombs, we characterise the tropical hyperbolicity locus in terms of the set of twisted edges on th…
Surfaces of general type with positive second Segre number $s_2:=c_1^2-c_2>0$ are known by results of Bogomolov to be quasi-hyperbolic i.e. with finitely many rational and elliptic curves. These results were extended by McQuillan in his proof of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for entire curves on such surfaces. In this work, we study hyperbolic properties of minimal surfaces of general type with minimal $c_1^2$, known as Horikawa surfaces. In principle these surfaces should be the most difficult case for the above conjecture as illustrate the quintic surfaces in $\bP^3$. Using orbifold techniq…
We study the hyperbolicity of the log variety $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, where $X$ is a very general hypersurface of degree $d\geq 2n+1$ (which is the bound predicted by the Kobayashi conjecture). Using a positivity result for the sheaf of (twisted) logarithmic vector fields, which may be of independent interest, we show that any log-subvariety of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$ is of log-general type, give a new proof of the algebraic hyperbolicity of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, and exclude the existence of maximal rank families of entire curves in the complement of the universal degree $d$ hypersurface. Moreover, we…
Given a log canonical pair $(X, Δ)$, we show that $K_X+Δ$ is nef assuming there is no non-constant map from the affine line with values in the open strata of the stratification induced by the non-klt locus of $(X, Δ)$. This implies a generalization of the Cone Theorem where each $K_X+Δ$-negative extremal ray is spanned by a rational curve that is the closure of a copy of the affine line contained in one of the open strata of $\mathrm{Nklt}(X, Δ)$. Moreover, we give a criterion of Nakai type to determine when under the above condition $K_X+Δ$ is ample and we prove some partial results in the ca…
