We consider the class of integral operators $Q_\f$ on $L^2(\R_+)$ of the form $(Q_\f f)(x)=\int_0^\be\f (\max\{x,y\})f(y)dy$. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions on $ϕ$ to insure that $Q_ϕ$ is bounded, compact, or in the Schatten-von Neumann class $\bS_p$, $1<p<\infty$. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for $Q_ϕ$ to be a finite rank operator. However, there is a kind of cut-off at $p=1$, and for membership in $\bS_{p}$, $0<p\leq1$, the situation is more complicated. Although we give various necessary conditions and sufficient conditions relating to $Q_ϕ\in\bS_{p}$ in that range, we do not have necessary and sufficient conditions. In the most important case $p=1$, we have a necessary condition and a sufficient condition, using $L^1$ and $L^2$ modulus of continuity, respectively, with a rather small gap in between. A second cut-off occurs at $p=1/2$: if $\f$ is sufficiently smooth and decays reasonably fast, then $\qf$ belongs to the weak Schatten-von Neumann class $\wS{1/2}$, but never to $\bS_{1/2}$ unless $\f=0$.
We also obtain results for related families of operators acting on $L^2(\R)$ and $\ell^2(\Z)$.
We further study operations acting on bounded linear operators on $L^{2}(\R^{+})$ related to the class of operators $Q_\f$. In particular we study Schur multipliers given by functions of the form $ϕ(\max\{x,y\}) $ and we study properties of the averaging projection (Hilbert-Schmidt projection) onto the operators of the form $Q_\f$.
We study in this paper properties of Schur multipliers of Schatten von Neumann classes $\boldsymbol{S}_p$. We prove that for $p\le1$, Schur multipliers of $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ are necessarily completely bounded. We also introduce for $p\le1$ a scale ${\mathscr W}_p$ of tensor products of $\ell^\infty$ and prove that matrices in ${\mathscr W}_p$ are Schur multipliers of $\boldsymbol{S}_p$. We compare this sufficient condition with the sufficient condition of membership in the $p$-tensor product of $\ell^\infty$ spaces.
We study perturbations of functions $f(A,B)$ of noncommuting self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ that can be defined in terms of double operator integrals. We prove that if $f$ belongs to the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, then we have the following Lipschitz type estimate in the Schatten--von Neumann norm $\bS_p$, $1\le p\le2$ norm: $\|f(A_1,B_1)-f(A_2,B_2)\|_{\bS_p}\le\const(\|A_1-A_2\|_{\bS_p}+\|B_1-B_2\|_{\bS_p})$. However, the condition $f\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$ does not imply the Lipschitz type estimate in $\bS_p$ with $p>2$. The main tool is Schatten--von Neumann norm estimates for trip…
We investigate the Schatten-von Neumann properties of pseudo-differential operators using the method proposed by A. Boulkhemair in \cite{Boulkhemair 2}. The symbols are elements of the ideals $S_{w}^{p}$ of the Sjöstrand algebra $S_{w}$.
We generalize von Neumann's well-known trace inequality, as well as related eigenvalue inequalities for hermitian matrices, to Schatten-class operators between complex Hilbert spaces of infinite dimension. To this end, we exploit some recent results on the $C$-numerical range of Schatten-class operators. For the readers' convenience, we sketched the proof of these results in the Appendix.
In this note we study pseudo-multipliers associated to the harmonic oscillator (also called Hermite multipliers) belonging to Schatten classes on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We also investigate the spectral trace of these operators.
We investigate the Schatten-class properties of pseudo-differential operators with the (revisted) method of Cordes and Kato. As symbol classes we use classes similar to those of Cordes in which the $L^{\infty}$% -conditions are replaced by $L^{p}$-conditions, $1\leq p<\infty $.
We obtain a number of explicit estimates for quasi-norms of pseudo-differential operators in the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_q$ with $0<q\le 1$. The estimates are applied to derive semi-classical bounds for operators with smooth or non-smooth symbols.
In this paper we introduce the concept of von Neumann-Schatten Bessel multipliers and obtain some of their characterizations. Finally, special attention is devoted to the study of invertible Hilbert--Schmidt frame multipliers. These results are not only of interest in their own right, but also they pave the way for obtaining some new results for diagonalization of matrices in finite dimensional setting as well as for dual $g$-frames. In particular, we show that a $g$-frame is uniquely determined by the set of its $g$-frames.
The first our aim is to clarify the results obtained by Lidskii devoted to the decomposition on the root vector system of the non-selfadjoint operator. We use a technique of the entire function theory and introduce a so-called Schatten-von Neumann class of the convergence exponent. Considering strictly accretive operators satisfying special conditions formulated in terms of the norm, we construct a sequence of contours of the power type on the contrary to the results by Lidskii, where a sequence of contours of the exponential type was used.
We prove an extended version of Cordes' lemma concerning trace-class properties of some special pseudo-differential operators. This version of Cordes' lemma is used to improve the results in \cite{Arsu} concerning the Schatten-class properties of pseudo-differential operators in the $(X,τ) $-quantization. Here $X$ is an $n$ dimensional vector space and $τ$ is an endomorphism of $X$.
This paper resolves a number of conjectures in the perturbation theory of linear operators. Namely, we prove that every Lipschitz function is operator Lipschitz in the Schatten-von Neumann ideals $S^α$, $1 < α< \infty$. The negative result for $S^α$, $α= 1, \infty$ was earlier established by Yu. Farforovskaya in 1972.
Let $H$ and $H'$ be a complex Hilbert spaces. For $p\in(1, \infty)\backslash\{2\}$ we consider the Banach space $C_p(H)$ of all $p$-Schatten von Neumann operators, whose unit sphere is denoted by $S(C_p(H))$. We prove that every surjective isometry $Δ: S(C_p(H))\to S(C_p(H'))$ can be extended to a complex linear or to a conjugate linear surjective isometry $T:C_p(H)\to C_p(H')$.
We consider modulation space and spaces of Schatten-von Neumann symbols where corresponding pseudo-differential operators map one Hilbert space to another. We prove Hölder-Young and Young type results for such spaces under dilated convolutions and multiplications. We also prove continuity properties for such spaces under the twisted convolution, and the Weyl product. These results lead to continuity properties for twisted convolutions on Lebesgue spaces, e.{}g. $L^p_{(ω)}$ is a twisted convolution algebra when $1\le p\le 2$ and appropriate weight $ω$.
In this paper we study non-selfadjoint operators using the methods of the spectral theory. The main challenge is to represent a complete description of an operator belonging to the Schatten-von Neumann class having used the order of the Hermitian real component. The latter fundamental result is advantageous since many theoretical statements based upon it and one of them is a concept on the root series expansion to say nothing on a wide spectrum of applications in the theory of evolution equations. In this regard the evolution equations of fractional order with the operator function in the term…
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
In this work we establish sharp kernel conditions ensuring that the corresponding integral operators belong to Schatten-von Neumann classes. The conditions are given in terms of the spectral properties of operators acting on the kernel. As applications we establish several criteria in terms of different types of differential operators and their spectral asymptotics in different settings: compact manifolds, operators on lattices, domains in ${\mathbb R}^n$ of finite measure, and conditions for operators on ${\mathbb R}^n$ given in terms of anharmonic oscillators. We also give examples in the se…
We study Schatten--von Neumann properties of multiple operator integrals with integrands in the Haagerup tensor product of $L^\infty$ spaces. We obtain sharp, best possible estimates. This allowed us to obtain sharp Schatten--von Neumann estimates in the case of {\it Haagerup-like} tensor products.
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group of dimension $n.$ In this work we characterise the membership of classical pseudo-differential operators on $G$ in the trace class ideal $S_{1}(L^2(G)),$ as well as in the setting of the Schatten ideals $S_{r}(L^2(G)),$ for all $r>0.$ In particular, we deduce Schatten characterisations of elliptic pseudo-differential operators of $(ρ,δ)$-type for the large range $0\leq δ<ρ\leq 1.$ Additional necessary and sufficient conditions are given in terms of the matrix-valued symbols of the operators, which are global functions on the phase space $G\times \widehat{G},$ wit…
We inspect the relationship between relative Fourier multipliers on noncommutative Lebesgue-Orlicz spaces of a discrete group and relative Toeplitz-Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann-Orlicz classes. Four applications are given: lacunary sets; unconditional Schauder bases for the subspace of a Lebesgue space determined by a given spectrum, that is, by a subset of the group; the norm of the Hilbert transform and the Riesz projection on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent a power of 2; the norm of Toeplitz Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent less than 1.
We address the question of describing the membership to Schatten-Von Neumann ideals $\mathcal{S}_ p$ of integration operators $(T_ g f)(z)=\int_{0}^{z}f(ζ)\,g'(ζ)\,dζ$ acting on Dirichlet type spaces. We also study this problem for multiplication, Hankel and Toeplitz operators. In particular, we provide an extension of Luecking's result on Toeplitz operators.
We establish continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for matrix operators with matrices satisfying mixed quasi-norm estimates. These considerations also include the case when the Lebesgue and Schatten parameters are allowed to stay between $0$ and $1$. We use the results to deduce continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in a broad class of modulation spaces.
Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra. It is shown that every absolutely summing operator from $A$ into $\ell_2$ factors through a Hilbert space operator that belongs to the 4-Schatten- von Neumann class. We also provide finite dimensinal examples that show that one can not improve the 4-Schatten-von Neumann class to $p$-Schatten von Neumann class for any $p<4$. As application, we prove that there exists a modulus of capacity $ε\to N(ε)$ so that if $A$ is a $C^*$-algebra and $T \in Π_1(A,\ell_2)$ with $π_1(T)\leq 1$, then for every $ε>0$, the $ε$-capacity of the image of the unit ball of $A$ under $T$ do…
This is a continuation of our paper \cite{AP2}. We prove that for functions $f$ in the Hölder class $Ł_\a(\R)$ and $1<p<\be$, the operator $f(A)-f(B)$ belongs to $\bS_{p/\a}$, whenever $A$ and $B$ are self-adjoint operators with $A-B\in\bS_p$. We also obtain sharp estimates for the Schatten--von Neumann norms $\big\|f(A)-f(B)\big\|_{\bS_{p/\a}}$ in terms of $\|A-B\|_{\bS_p}$ and establish similar results for other operator ideals. We also estimate Schatten--von Neumann norms of higher order differences $\sum\limits_{j=0}^m(-1)^{m-j}(m\j)f\big(A+jK\big)$. We prove that analogous results hold fo…
We survey the most recent results on extension of isometries between special subsets of the unit spheres of C$^*$-algebras, von Neumann algebras, trace class operators, preduals of von Neumann algebras, and $p$-Schatten-von Neumann spaces, with special interest on Tingley's problem.
Given a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ and a closed subgroup $H$ of $G,$ in this paper we present symbolic criteria for pseudo-differential operators on compact homogeneous space $G/H$ characterizing the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_r(L^2(G/H))$ for all $0<r \leq \infty.$ We go on to provide a symbolic characterization for $r$-nuclear, $0< r \leq 1,$ pseudo-differential operators on $L^{p}(G/H)$-space with applications to adjoint, product and trace formulae. The criteria here are given in terms of the concept of matrix-valued symbols defined on noncommutative analogue of phase space $G/H \ti…
Given a pair of self-adjoint operators $H$ and $V$ such that $V$ is bounded and $(H+V-i)^{-1}-(H-i)^{-1}$ belongs to the Schatten-von Neumann ideal $\mathcal{S}^n$, $n\ge 2$, of operators on a separable Hilbert space, we establish higher order trace formulas for a broad set of functions $f$ containing several major classes of test functions and also establish existence of the respective locally integrable real-valued spectral shift functions determined uniquely up to a low degree polynomial summand. Our result generalizes the result of \cite{PSS13} for Schatten-von Neumman perturbations $V$ an…
In this paper we present symbolic criteria for invariant operators on compact topological groups $G$ characterising the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_{r}(L^{2}(G))$ for all $0<r\leq\infty$. Since it is known that for pseudo-differential operators criteria in terms of kernels may be less effective (Carleman's example), our criteria are given in terms of the operators' symbols defined on the noncommutative analogue of the phase space $G\times\hat{G}$, where $G$ is a compact topological (or Lie) group and $\hat{G}$ is its unitary dual. We also show results concerning general non-invariant opera…
Time-frequency analysis have played a crucial role in the development of localization operators in the last twenty years. We present its applications to the study of boundedness and Schatten Class property for such operators. In particular, new sufficient conditions for such operators to belong to the Schatten-von Neumann Class $S_p$, $0<p<1$, are exhibited. As a byproduct, sharp continuity results for the Wigner distribution are also presented.
We affirmatively settle the question on existence of a real-valued higher order spectral shift function for a pair of self-adjoint operators $H$ and $V$ such that $V$ is bounded and $V(H-iI)^{-1}$ belongs to a Schatten-von Neumann ideal $\mathcal{S}^n$ of compact operators in a separable Hilbert space. We also show that the function satisfies the same trace formula as in the known case of $V\in\mathcal{S}^n$ and that it is unique up to a polynomial summand of order $n-1$. Our result significantly advances earlier partial results where counterparts of the spectral shift function for noncompact …
We study the possibilities of factorizations of products of nuclear operators of different types through the Schatten-von Neumann operators in Hilbert spaces with giving some applications to eigenvalues problems.
This is a survey article. We consider different problems in connection with the behavior of functions of operators under perturbations of operators. We deal with three classes of operators: unitary operators, self-adjoint operators, and contractions. We study operator Lipschitz and operator differentiable functions. We also study the behavior of functions under perturbations of an operator by an operator of Schatten--von Neumann class $\bS_p$ and apply the results to the Livschits--Krein and Koplienko--Neidhardt trace formulae. We also include in this survey article recent unexpected results o…
Let $α:G \curvearrowright M$ be a spatial action of countable abelian group on a "spatial" von Neumann algebra $M$ and $S$ be its unital subsemigroup with $G=S^{-1}S$. We explicitly compute the essential commutant and the essential fixed-points, modulo the Schatten $p$-class or the compact operators, of the w$^*$-semicrossed product of $M$ by $S$ when $M'$ contains no non-zero compact operators. We also prove a weaker result when $M$ is a von Neumann algebra on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and $(G,S)=(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{Z}_{+})$, which extends a famous result due to Davidson (1977) for t…
We prove that any linear operator with kernel in a Gelfand-Shilov space is a composition of two operators with kernels in the same Gelfand-Shilov space. We also give links on numerical approximations for such compositions. We apply these composition rules to establish Schatten-von Neumann properties for such operators.
One of the long standing questions in the theory of Schatten-von Neumann ideals of compact operators is whether their norms have the same differentiability properties as the norms of their commutative counterparts. We answer this question in the affirmative. A key technical observation underlying our proof is a discovery of connection between this question and recent affirmative resolution of L.S. Koplienko's conjecture concerning existence of higher order spectral shift functions.
In this paper, we extend the classical Bohr's inequality to the setting of the non-commutative Hardy space $H^1$ associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra. As a consequence, we obtain Bohr's inequality for operators in the von Neumann-Schatten class $\cl C_1$ and square matrices of any finite order. Interestingly, we establish that the optimal bound for $r$ in the above mentioned Bohr's inequality concerning von Neumann-Shcatten class is 1/3 whereas it is 1/2 in the case of $2\times 2$ matrices and reduces to $\sqrt{2}-1$ for the case of $3\times 3$ matrices. We also obtain a generaliza…
In this article we prove that for $p>2$, there exist pairs of self-adjoint operators $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ and a function $f$ on the real line in the homogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$ such that the differences $A_2-A_1$ and $B_2-B_1$ belong to the Schatten--von Neumann class $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ but $f(A_2,B_2)-f(A_1,B_1)\not\in\boldsymbol{S}_p$. A similar result holds for functions of contractions. We also obtain an analog of this result in the case of triples of self-adjoint operators for any $p\ge1$
We obtain general trace formulae in the case of perturbation of self-adjoint operators by self-adjoint operators of class $\bS_m$, where $m$ is a positive integer. In \cite{PSS} a trace formula for operator Taylor polynomials was obtained. This formula includes the Livshits--Krein trace formula in the case $m=1$ and the Koplienko trace formula in the case $m=2$. We establish most general trace formulae in the case of perturbation of Schatten--von Neumann class $\bS_m$. We also improve the trace formula obtained in \cite{PSS} for operator Taylor polynomials and prove it for arbitrary functions …
We show that the Weyl symbol of a Born-Jordan operator is in the same class as the Born-Jordan symbol, when Hörmander symbols and certain types of modulation spaces are used as symbol classes. We use these properties to carry over continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties to the Born-Jordan calculus.
We prove that if $0<\a<1$ and $f$ is in the Hölder class $Ł_\a(\R)$, then for arbitrary self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ with bounded $A-B$, the operator $f(A)-f(B)$ is bounded and $\|f(A)-f(B)\|\le\const\|A-B\|^\a$. We prove a similar result for functions $f$ of the Zygmund class $Ł_1(\R)$: $\|f(A+K)-2f(A)+f(A-K)\|\le\const\|K\|$, where $A$ and $K$ are self-adjoint operators. Similar results also hold for all Hölder-Zygmund classes $Ł_\a(\R)$, $\a>0$. We also study properties of the operators $f(A)-f(B)$ for $f\inŁ_\a(\R)$ and self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ such that $A-B$ belongs to th…
For $\a,\b>0$ and for a locally integrable function (or, more generally, a distribution) $\f$ on $(0,\be)$, we study integral ooperators ${\frak G}^{\a,\b}_\f$ on $L^2(\R_+)$ defined by $\big({\frak G}^{\a,\b}_\f f\big)(x)=\int_{\R_+}\f\big(x^\a+y^\b\big)f(y)dy$. We describe the bounded and compact operators ${\frak G}^{\a,\b}_\f$ and operators ${\frak G}^{\a,\b}_\f$ of Schatten--von Neumann class $\bS_p$. We also study continuity properties of the averaging projection $\Q_{\a,\b}$ onto the operators of the form ${\frak G}^{\a,\b}_\f$. In particular, we show that if $\a\le\b$ and $\b>1$, then …
In this work we study a class of anharmonic oscillators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ corresponding to Hamiltonians of the form $A(D)+V(x)$, where $A(ξ)$ and $V(x)$ are $C^{\infty}$ functions enjoying some regularity conditions. Our class includes fractional relativistic Schrödinger operators and anharmonic oscillators with fractional potentials. By associating a Hörmander metric we obtain spectral properties in terms of Schatten-von Neumann classes for their negative powers and derive from them estimates on the rate of growth for the eigenvalues of the operators $A(D)+V(x)$. This extends the analysis in …
In this work we study a class of anharmonic oscillators within the framework of the Weyl-Hörmander calculus. The anharmonic oscillators arise from several applications in mathematical physics as natural extensions of the harmonic oscillator. A prototype is an operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$ of the form $(-Δ)^{\ell}+|x|^{2k}$ for $k,\ell$ integers $\geq 1$. The simplest case corresponds to Hamiltonians of the form $|ξ|^2+|x|^{2k}$. Here by associating a Hörmander metric $g$ to a given anharmonic oscillator we investigate several properties of the anharmonic oscillators. We obtain spectral properties…
In this paper, we report on new results related to the existence of an adjoint for operators on separable Banach spaces and discuss a few interesting applications. (Some results are new even for Hilbert spaces.) Our first two applications provide an extension of the Poincaré inequality and the Stone-von Neumann version of the spectral theorem for a large class of $C_0$-generators of contraction semigroups on separable Banach spaces. Our third application provides a natural extension of the Schatten-class of operators to all separable Banach spaces. As a part of this program, we introduce a new…
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in any Schatten--von Neumann norm $\boldsymbol S_p$, $1\le p\le\infty$, for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$. In other words, we prove that for $p\in[1,\infty]$, there is no constant $K>0$ such that the inequality \begin{align*} \|f(A_1,B_1,C_1)&-f(A_2,B_2,C_2)\|_{\boldsymbol S_p}\\[.1cm] &\le K\|f\|_{B_{\inf…
We provide conditions for a linear map of the form $C_{R,T}(S)=RST$ to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on algebras of operators on separable Banach spaces. In particular, if $R$ is a bounded operator satisfying the $q$-Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion, then the map $C_{R}(S)$=$RSR^*$ is shown to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on the space $\mathcal{K}(H)$ of all compact operators and the real topological vector space $\mathcal{S}(H)$ of all self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space $H$. Further we provide a condition for $C_{R,T}$ to be $q$-frequently hypercyclic on the Schatten von Ne…
We show that many invariant subspaces M for d-shifts (S_1,...,S_d) of finite rank have the property that the projection P onto M almost commutes with the S_k in the sense that the commutators PS_k - S_kP belong to the Schatten-von Neumann class L^p for every p > d. In such cases the d-tuple of operators (T_1,...,T_d) obtained by compressing (S_1,...,S_d) to the orthocomplement of M generates a *-algebra whose commutator ideal is contained in L^p, p > d. It follows that the C*-algebra generated by T_1,...,T_d is commutative modulo compact operators, the associated Dirac operator is Fredholm, an…
In \cite{Pe1}, \cite{Pe2}, \cite{AP1}, \cite{AP2}, and \cite{AP3} sharp estimates for $f(A)-f(B)$ were obtained for self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ and for various classes of functions $f$ on the real line $\R$. In this note we extend those results to the case of functions of normal operators. We show that if $f$ belongs to the Hölder class $Ł_\a(\R^2)$, $0<\a<1$, of functions of two variables, and $N_1$ and $N_2$ are normal operators, then $\|f(N_1)-f(N_2)\|\le\const\|f\|_{Ł_\a}\|N_1-N_2\|^\a$. We obtain a more general result for functions in the space $Ł_ø(\R^2)=\big\{f: |f(\z_1)-f(\z_2)|…
