Time-frequency analysis have played a crucial role in the development of localization operators in the last twenty years. We present its applications to the study of boundedness and Schatten Class property for such operators. In particular, new sufficient conditions for such operators to belong to the Schatten-von Neumann Class $S_p$, $0<p<1$, are exhibited.
As a byproduct, sharp continuity results for the Wigner distribution are also presented.
We obtain an anlogue of Wigner's classical theorem on symmetries for Banach spaces. The proof is based on a result from the theory of linear preservers. Moreover, we present two other Wigner-type results for finite dimensional linear spaces over general fields.
We introduce new quasi-Banach modulation spaces on locally compact abelian (LCA) groups which coincide with the classical ones in the Banach setting and prove their main properties. Then we study Gabor frames on quasi-lattices, significantly extending the original theory introduced by Gröchenig and Strohmer. These issues are the key tools in showing boundedness results for Kohn-Nirenberg and localization operators on modulation spaces and studying their eigenfunctions' properties. In particular, the results in the Euclidean space are recaptured.
We study decay and smoothness properties for eigenfunctions of compact localization operators. Operators with symbols a in the wide modulation space M^{p,\infty} (containing the Lebesgue space L^p), p<\infty, and windows \f_1,\f_2 in the Schwartz class are known to be compact. We show that their L^2-eigenfuctions with non-zero eigenvalues are indeed highly compressed onto a few Gabor atoms. Similarly, for symbols a in the weighted modulation spaces M^{\infty}_{v_s\otimes 1} (\rdd), s>0 (subspaces of M^{p,\infty}(\rdd), p>2d/s) the L^2-eigenfunctions of the localization operator are actually Sc…
Matrix type operators with the off-diagonal decay of polynomial or sub-exponential types are revisited with weaker assumptions concerning row or column estimates, still giving the continuity results for the frame type operators. Such results are extended from Banach to Fréchet spaces. Moreover, the localization of Fréchet frames is used for the frame expansions of tempered distributions and a class of Beurling ultradistributions.
We introduce multilinear localization operators in terms of the short-time Fourier transform, and multilinear Weyl pseudodifferential operators. We prove that such localization operators are in fact Weyl pseudodifferential operators whose symbols are given by the convolution between the symbol of the localization operator and the multilinear Wigner transform. For such interpretation we use the kenrel theorem for the Gelfand-Shilov space. Furthermore, we study the continuity properties of the multilinear localization operators on modulation spaces. Our results extend some known results when res…
This paper is concerned with the characterization of $α$-modulation spaces by Banach frames, i.e., stable and redundant non-orthogonal expansions, constituted of functions obtained by a suitable combination of translation, modulation and dilation of a mother atom. In particular, the parameter $α\in [0,1]$ governs the dependence of the dilation factor on the frequency. The result is achieved by exploiting intrinsic properties of localization of such frames. The well-known Gabor and wavelet frames arise as special cases ($α= 0$) and limiting case ($ α\to 1)$, to characterize respectively modulat…
In this article, we study two different types of operators, the localization operator and Weyl transform, on the reduced Heisenberg group with multidimensional center $\mathcal{G}$. The group $\mathcal{G}$ is a quotient group of non-isotropic Heisenberg group with multidimensional center $\mathcal{H}^m$ by its center subgroup. Firstly, we define the localization operator using a wavelet transform on $\mathcal{G}$ and obtain the product formula for the localization operators. Next, we define the Weyl transform associated to the Wigner transform on $\mathcal{G}$ with the operator-valued symbol. …
We consider the class of spatially decaying systems, where the underlying dynamics are spatially decaying and the sensing and controls are spatially distributed. This class of systems arise in various applications where there is a notion of spatial distance with respect to which couplings between the subsystems can be quantified using a class of coupling weight functions. We exploit spatial decay property of the underlying dynamics of the system to introduce a class of sparsity and spatial localization measures for spatially distributed systems. We develop a new methodology based on concepts o…
Quantum harmonic analysis on phase space is shown to be linked with localization operators. The convolution between operators and the convolution between a function and an operator provide a conceptual framework for the theory of localization operators which is complemented by an appropriate Fourier transform, the Fourier-Wigner transform. We use Lieb's uncertainty principle to establish a sharp Hausdorff-Young inequality for the Fourier-Wigner transform. Noncommutative Tauberian theorems due to Werner allow us to extend results of Bayer and Gröchenig on localization operators. Furthermore we …
We study the interaction between various analytification functors, and a class of morphisms of rings, called homotopy epimorphisms. An analytification functor assigns to a simplicial commutative algebra over a ring $R$, along with a choice of Banach structure on $R$, a commutative monoid in the monoidal model category of simplicial ind-Banach $R$-modules. We show that several analytifications relevant to analytic geometry - such as Tate, overconvergent, Stein analytification, and formal completion - are homotopy epimorphisms. Another class of examples arises from Weierstrass, Laurent and ratio…
This paper offers a review of the results concerning localization operators on modulation spaces, and related topics. However, our approach, based on the Grossmann-Royer transform, gives a new insight and (slightly) different proofs. We define the Grossmann-Royer transform as interpretation of the Grossmann-Royer operator in the weak sense. Although such transform is essentially the same as the cross-Wigner distribution, the proofs of several known results are simplified when it is used instead of other time-frequency representations. Due to the importance of their role in applications when de…
We consider time-frequency localization operators $A_a^{φ_1,φ_2}$ with symbols $a$ in the wide weighted modulation space $ M^\infty_{w}(\mathbb{R}^{2d})$, and windows $ φ_1, φ_2 $ in the Gelfand-Shilov space $\mathcal{S}^{\left(1\right)}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. If the weights under consideration are of ultra-rapid growth, we prove that the eigenfunctions of $A_a^{φ_1,φ_2}$ have appropriate subexponential decay in phase space, i.e. that they belong to the Gefand-Shilov space $ \mathcal{S}^{(γ)} (\mathbb{R}^{d}) $, where the parameter $γ\geq 1 $ is related to the growth of the considered weight. An im…
The cross-Wigner distribution $W(f,g)$ of two functions or temperate distributions $f,g$ is a fundamental tool in quantum mechanics and in signal analysis. Usually, in applications in time-frequency analysis $f$ and $g$ belong to some modulation space and it is important to know which modulation spaces $W(f,g)$ belongs to. Although several particular sufficient conditions have been appeared in this connection, the general problem remains open. In the present paper we solve completely this issue by providing the full range of modulation spaces in which the continuity of the cross-Wigner distrib…
We describe a class of real Banach manifolds, which classify $K^{-1}$. These manifolds are Grassmannians of (hermitian) lagrangian subspaces in a complex Hilbert space. Certain finite codimensional real subvarieties described by incidence relations define geometric representatives for the generators of the cohomology rings of these classifying spaces. Any family of self-adjoint, Fredholm operators parametrized by a closed manifold comes with a map to one of these spaces. We use these Schubert varieties to describe the Poincare duals of the pull-backs to the parameter space of the cohomology ri…
We consider an arbitrary square integrable function $F$ on the phase space and look for the Wigner function closest to it with respect to the $L^2$ norm. It is well known that the minimizing solution is the Wigner function of any eigenvector associated with the largest eigenvalue of the Hilbert-Schmidt operator with Weyl symbol $F$. We solve the particular case of radial functions on the two-dimensional phase space exactly. For more general cases, one has to solve an infinite dimensional eigenvalue problem. To avoid this difficulty, we consider a finite dimensional approximation and estimate t…
We approach uncertainty principles of Cowling-Price-Heis-\\enberg-type as a variational principle on modulation spaces. In our discussion we are naturally led to compact localization operators with symbols in modulation spaces. The optimal constant in these uncertainty principles is the smallest eigenvalue of the inverse of a compact localization operator. The Euler-Lagrange equations for the associated functional provide equations for the eigenfunctions of the smallest eigenvalue of these compact localization operators. As a by-product of our proofs we derive a generalization to mixed-norm sp…
