We show that there are obstructions to the existence of certain types of invariant subspaces of the Milnor monodromy; this places restrictions on the cohomology of Milnor fibres of non-isolated hypersurface singularities.
We obtain an explicit formula for the characteristic polynomial of the local monodromy of $A$-hypergeometric functions with respect to small loops around a coordinate hyperplane $x_i =0$. This formula is similar to the one obtained by Ando, Esterov and Takeuchi for the local monodromy at infinity. Our proof is combinatorial and can be adapted to provide an alternative proof for the latter formula as well. On the other hand, we also prove that the solution space at a nonsingular point of certain irregular and irreducible $A$--hypergeometric $D$--modules has a nontrivial global monodromy invaria…
We will give an explicit construction of the invariant Hermitian form for the monodromy of an $A$-hypergeometric system given that there is a Mellin-Barnes basis of solutions.
In "Curves on Heisenberg invariant quartic surfaces in projective 3-space", Eklund showed that a general $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface contains at least $320$ conics. In this paper we analyse the field of definition of those conics as well as their Monodromy group. As a result, we prove that the moduli space $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface with a marked conic has $10$ irreducible components.
In this paper a monodromy invariant for isotropic classes on generalized Kummer type manifolds is constructed. This invariant is used to determine the polarization type of Lagrangian fibrations on such manifolds - a notion which was introduced in an earlier paper of the author. The result shows that the polarization type of a Lagrangian fibration of generalized Kummer type depends on the connected component of the moduli space.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. For a log curve $X/k^{\times}$ over the standard log point, we define (algebraically) a combinatorial monodromy operator on its log-de Rham cohomology group. The invariant part of this action has a cohomological description, it is the Du Bois cohomology of $X$. This can be seen as an analogue of the invariant cycles exact sequence for a semistable family (as in the complex, étale and $p$-adic settings). In the specific case in which $k=\mathbb C$ and $X$ is the central fiber of a semistable degeneration over the complex disc, our …
In this paper we are concerned with the monodromy of Picard-Fuch differential equations associated with one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our results show that in the hypergeometric cases the matrix representations of monodromy relative to the Frobenius bases can be expressed in terms of the geometric invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds. This phenomenon is also verified numerically for other families of Calabi-Yau threefolds in the paper. Furthermore, we discover that under a suitable change of bases the monodromy groups are contained in certain congruence subgrou…
In this paper we construct effective invariants for braid monodromy of affine curves. We also prove that, for some curves, braid monodromy determines their topology. We apply this result to find a pair of curves with conjugate equations in a number field but which do not admit any orientation-preserving homeomorphism.
We consider an arbitrary polynomial map $f:{\mathbb C}^{n+1}\to {\mathbb C} $ and we study the Alexander invariants of ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}\setminus X$ for any fiber $X$ of $f$. The article has two major messages. First, the most important qualitative properties of the Alexander modules are completely independent of the behaviour of $f$ at infinity, or about the special fibers. Second, all the Alexander invariants of all the fibers of the polynomial $f$ are closely related to the monodromy representation of $f$. In fact, all the torsion parts of the Alexander modules (associated with all the pos…
This paper is a survey of the authors' recent results on "abc-surfaces" and the monodromy of their natural Lefschetz fibrations and projections to P^1 x P^1, see (arXiv:0910.2142). The results being surveyed explore various fundamental questions about complex deformation vs. symplectomorphism vs. diffeomorphism from the perspective of one explicit family of examples; the paper also contains some remarks which were not in earlier papers.
In this paper we calculate the motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for (-2)-curves arising from 3-fold flopping contractions in the minimal model programme. We translate this geometric situation into the machinery developed by Kontsevich and Soibelman, and using the results and framework developed previously by the authors we describe the monodromy on these invariants. In particular, in contrast to all existing known Donaldson-Thomas invariants for small resolutions of Gorenstein singularities these monodromy actions are nontrivial.
The braid monodromy factorization of the branch curve of a surface of general type is known to be an invariant that completely determines the diffeomorphism type of the surface. Calculating this factorization is of high technical complexity; computing the braid monodromy factorization of branch curves of surfaces uncovers new facts and invariants of the surfaces. Since finding the branch curve of a surface is very difficult, we degenerate the surface into a union of planes. Thus, we can find the braid monodromy of the branch curve of the degenerated surface, which is a union of lines. The rege…
We propose a monodromy invariant pairing $K_{hol}(X) \otimes H_3(X^\vee,\ZZ) \to \IQ$ for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds, $(X,X^\vee)$. This pairing is utilized implicitly in the previous calculations of the prepotentials for Gromov-Witten invariants. After identifying the pairing explicitly we interpret some hypergeometric series from the viewpoint of homological mirror symmetry due to Kontsevich. Also we consider the local mirror symmetry limit to del Pezzo surfaces in Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

A new construction of BPS monodromies for 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories of class S is introduced. A novel feature of this construction is its manifest invariance under Kontsevich-Soibelman wall crossing, in the sense that no information on the 4d BPS spectrum is employed. The BPS monodromy is encoded by topological data of a finite graph, embedded into the UV curve $C$ of the theory. The graph arises from a degenerate limit of spectral networks, constructed at maximal intersections of walls of marginal stability in the Coulomb branch of the gauge theory. The topology of the graph, together with…
We consider the space of smooth complex projective plane curves of degree d. Defined over this is the tautological family of plane curves, and hence there is a monodromy representation into the mapping class group of the fiber. We show two results concerning this monodromy group. First, we show that the presence of an invariant known as a "n-spin structure" constrains the image in ways not predicted by previous work of Beauville. Second, we show that for degree d=5, our invariant is the only obstruction for a mapping class to be contained in the image. This requires combining the algebro-geome…
The pentagram map is a discrete integrable system on the moduli space of planar polygons. The corresponding first integrals are so-called monodromy invariants $E_1, O_1, E_2, O_2,\dots$ By analyzing the combinatorics of these invariants, R.Schwartz and S.Tabachnikov have recently proved that for polygons inscribed in a conic section one has $E_k = O_k$ for all $k$. In this paper we give a simple conceptual proof of the Schwartz-Tabachnikov theorem. Our main observation is that for inscribed polygons the corresponding monodromy satisfies a certain self-duality relation. From this we also deduce…
We give conditions under which the monodromy group of an $A$-hypergeometric system is invariant under modifications of the collection of characters $A$. The key ingredient is a Zariski--Lefschetz type theorem for principal $A$-determinants.
In this paper we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula for the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function of an elliptic modular form f of higher weight and of multiplicative type at p. For such f we also decribe explicitely the local Galois representation attached to it at p and compare the Fontaine-Mazur and Teitelbaum L-invariants.
Let f be a modular eigenform of even weight k>0 and new at a prime p dividing exactly the level, with respect to an indefinite quaternion algebra. The theory of Fontaine-Mazur allows to attach to f a monodromy module D_FM(f) and an L-invariant L_FM(f). The first goal of this paper is building a suitable p-adic integration theory that allows us to construct a monodromy module D(f) and an L-invariant L(f) in the spirit of Darmon. We conjecture both monodromy modules are isomorphic, and in particular the two L-invariants are equal. For the second goal of this note we assume the conjecture is true…
We give an elementary proof of an efficient version of the Wagner's theorem on almost invariant subspaces and deduce some consequences in the context of Galois extensions.
