Motivated by a connection with the factorization of multivariate polynomials, we study integral convex polytopes and their integral decompositions in the sense of the Minkowski sum. We first show that deciding decomposability of integral polygons is NP-complete then present a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for decomposing polygons. For higher dimensional polytopes, we give a heuristic algorithm which is based upon projections and uses randomization. Applications of our algorithm include absolute irreducibility testing and factorization of polynomials via their Newton polytopes.
The weak-map order on the matroid base polytopes is the partial order defined by inclusion. Lucas proved that the base polytope of no binary matroid includes the base polytope of a connected matroid. A matroid base polytope is said to be decomposable when it has a polytopal decomposition which consists of at least two matroid base polytopes. We shed light on the relation between the decomposability and the weak-map order of matroid base polytopes. We classify matroids into five types with respect to the weak-map order and decomposability. We give an example of a matroid in each class. Moreover…
Let $P$ be the Gelfand--Tsetlin polytope defined by the skew shape $λ/μ$ and weight $w$. In the case corresponding to a standard Young tableau, we completely characterize for which shapes $λ/μ$ the polytope $P$ is integral. Furthermore, we show that $P$ is a compressed polytope whenever it is integral and corresponds to a standard Young tableau. We conjecture that a similar property hold for arbitrary $w$, namely that $P$ has the integer decomposition property whenever it is integral. Finally, a natural partial ordering on GT-polytopes is introduced that provides information about integrality …
Though much is known about ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes, there are still many unanswered questions. In this paper, we show that ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes satisfy the integer decomposition property (IDP) in the case of monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequences. Given restrictions on a monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequence, we discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the Fano, reflexive and Gorenstein properties. Additionally, we give a construction for producing Gorenstein/IDP lecture hall polytopes.
This is a continuation of the early paper concerning matroid base polytope decomposition. Here, we will present sufficient conditions on $M$ so its base matroid polytope $P(M)$ has a {\em sequence} of hyperplane splits. The latter yields to decompositions of $P(M)$ with two or more pieces for infinitely many matroids $M$. We also present necessary conditions on the Euclidean representation of rank three matroids $M$ for the existences of decompositions of $P(M)$ into $2$ or $3$ pieces. Finally, we prove that $P(M_1 \oplus M_2)$ has a sequence of hyperplane splits if either $P(M_1)$ or $P(M_2)$…
We give a new definition of lattice-face polytopes by removing an unnecessary restriction in the paper "Ehrhart polynomials of lattice-face polytopes", and show that with the new definition, the Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice-face polytope still has the property that each coefficient is the normalized volume of a projection of the original polytope. Furthermore, we show that the new family of lattice-face polytopes contains all possible combinatorial types of rational polytopes.
Let $P(M)$ be the matroid base polytope of a matroid $M$. A {\em matroid base polytope decomposition} of $P(M)$ is a decomposition of the form $P(M) = \bigcup\limits_{i=1}^t P(M_{i})$ where each $P(M_i)$ is also a matroid base polytope for some matroid $M_i$, and for each $1\le i \neq j\le t$, the intersection $P(M_{i}) \cap P(M_{j})$ is a face of both $P(M_i)$ and $P(M_j)$. In this paper, we investigate {\em hyperplane splits}, that is, polytope decompositions when $t=2$. We give sufficient conditions for $M$ so $P(M)$ has a hyperplane split and characterize when $P(M_1 \oplus M_2)$ has a hyp…
The Ehrhart polynomial of an integral convex polytope counts the number of lattice points in dilates of the polytope. In math.CO/0402148, the authors conjectured that for any cyclic polytope with integral parameters, the Ehrhart polynomial of it is equal to its volume plus the Ehrhart polynomial of its lower envelope and proved the case when the dimension d = 2. In our article, we prove the conjecture for any dimension.
Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are inhomogeneous versions of Schur polynomials that arise in combinatorial $K$-theory. A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point in the polytope is an exponent vector. We show Newton polytopes of these Grothendieck polynomials and their homogeneous components have SNP. Moreover, the Newton polytope of each homogeneous component is a permutahedron. This addresses recent conjectures of C. Monical-N. Tokcan-A. Yong and of A. Fink-K. Mészáros-A. St. Dizier in this special case.
We study a family of dissections of flow polytopes arising from the subdivision algebra. To each dissection of a flow polytope, we associate a polynomial, called the left-degree polynomial, which we show is invariant of the dissection considered (proven independently by Grinberg). We prove that left-degree polynomials encode integer points of generalized permutahedra. Using that certain left-degree polynomials are related to Grothendieck polynomials, we resolve special cases of conjectures by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong regarding the saturated Newton polytope property of Grothendieck polynomials…
We investigate properties of Ehrhart polynomials for matroid polytopes, independence matroid polytopes, and polymatroids. In the first half of the paper we prove that for fixed rank their Ehrhart polynomials are computable in polynomial time. The proof relies on the geometry of these polytopes as well as a new refined analysis of the evaluation of Todd polynomials. In the second half we discuss two conjectures about the h^*-vector and the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes; we provide theoretical and computational evidence for their validity.
The cut polytope of a graph is an important object in several fields, such as functional analysis, combinatorial optimization, and probability. For example, Sturmfels and Sullivant showed that the toric ideals of cut polytopes are useful in algebraic statistics. In the theory of lattice polytopes, the $h^{*}$-polynomial is one of the most important invariants. The necessary and sufficient condition in terms of graphs that the $h^{*}$-polynomial of a cut polytope is palindromic is known. However, except for trees, there are no classes of graphs for which the $h^{*}$-polynomial of their cut poly…
We prove that each bounded polytope can be represented as a polynomial zonotope, which we refer to as the Z-representation of polytopes. Previous representations are the vertex representation (V-representation) and the halfspace representation (H-representation). Depending on the polytope, the Z-representation can be more compact than the V-representation and the H-representation. In addition, the Z-representation enables the computation of linear maps, Minkowski addition, and convex hull with a computational complexity that is polynomial in the representation size. The usefulness of the new r…
The characterization of lattice polytopes based upon information about their Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials is a difficult open problem. In this paper, we finish the classification of lattice polytopes whose $h^*$-polynomials satisfy two properties: they are palindromic (so the polytope is Gorenstein) and they consist of precisely three terms. This extends the classification of Gorenstein polytopes of degree two due to Batyrev and Juny. The proof relies on the recent characterization of Batyrev and Hofscheier of empty lattice simplices whose $h^*$-polynomials have precisely two terms. Putting our t…
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is called a locally anti-blocking polytope if for any closed orthant $\mathbb{R}^d_{\varepsilon}$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{R}^d_{\varepsilon}$ is unimodularly equivalent to an anti-blocking polytope by reflections of coordinate hyperplanes. In the present paper, we give a formula for the $h^*$-polynomials of locally anti-blocking lattice polytopes. In particular, we discuss the $γ$-positivity of the $h^*$-polynomials of locally anti-blocking reflexive polytopes.
In these notes, we explain residue formulae for volumes of convex polytopes, and for Ehrahrt polynomials based on the notion of total residue. We apply this method to the computation of the volume of the Chan-Robbins polytope. The final computation is based on a total residue formula for the system $A_n$, similar to Morris identity. For flow polytopes, a formula of change of variables in total residues leads to a "nice formula" for Ehrhart polynomials in function of mixed volumes. We apply it to Pitman-Stanley polytope.
We consider a Hamiltonian decomposition problem of partitioning a regular graph into edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles. A sufficient condition for vertex adjacency in the 1-skeleton of the traveling salesperson polytope can be formulated as the Hamiltonian decomposition problem in a 4-regular multigraph. We introduce a heuristic general variable neighborhood search algorithm for this problem based on finding a vertex-disjoint cycle cover of the multigraph through reduction to perfect matching and several cycle merging operations. The algorithm has a one-sided error: the answer "not adjacent" is…
The h^*-polynomial of a lattice polytope is the numerator of the generating function of the Ehrhart polynomial. Let P be a lattice polytope with h^*-polynomial of degree d and with linear coefficient h^*_1. We show that P has to be a lattice pyramid over a lower-dimensional lattice polytope, if the dimension of P is greater or equal to h^*_1 (2d+1) + 4d-1. This result has a purely combinatorial proof and generalizes a recent theorem of Batyrev.
We use a version of localization in equivariant cohomology for the norm-square of the moment map, described by Paradan, to give several weighted decompositions for simple polytopes. As an application, we study Euler-Maclaurin formulas.
A complete classification of the $δ$-vectors of lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$ is known. In the present paper, we will classify all the $δ$-vectors of lattice polytopes with normalized volumes $5$.
The n'th Birkhoff polytope is the set of all doubly stochastic n-by-n matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A wide open problem concerns the volumes of these polytopes, which have been known for n up to 8. We present a new, complex-analytic way to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope, that is, the function counting the integer points in the dilated polytope. One reason to be interested in this counting function is that the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial is--up to a trivial factor--the volume of…
Given a family of lattice polytopes, two common questions in Ehrhart Theory are determining when a polytope has the integer decomposition property and determining when a polytope is reflexive. While these properties are of independent interest, the confluence of these properties is a source of active investigation due to conjectures regarding the unimodality of the $h^\ast$-polynomial. In this paper, we consider the Newton polytopes arising from two families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics: Schur polynomials and inflated symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In both cases, we prove tha…
We study modular and integral flow polynomials of graphs by means of subgroup arrangements and lattice polytopes. We introduce an Eulerian equivalence relation on orientations, flow arrangements, and flow polytopes; and we apply the theory of Ehrhart polynomials to obtain properties of modular and integral flow polynomials. The emphasis is on the geometrical treatment through subgroup arrangements and Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to a reciprocity law for the modular flow polynomial, which gives rise to an interpretation on the values of the modular flow polynomial at negative inte…
The symmetric edge polytopes of odd cycles (del Pezzo polytopes) are known as smooth Fano polytopes. In this paper, we show that if the length of the cycle is 127, then the Ehrhart polynomial has a root whose real part is greater than the dimension. As a result, we have a smooth Fano polytope that is a counterexample to the two conjectures on the roots of Ehrhart polynomials.
In this paper, we study the Ehrhart polynomial of the dual of the root polytope of type C of dimension $d$, denoted by $C_d^*$. We prove that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of $C_d^*$ have the same real part $-1/2$, and we also prove that the Ehrhart polynomials of $C_d^*$ for $d=1,2,\cdots$ has the interlacing property.
There is a simple formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a cyclic polytope. The purpose of this paper is to show that the same formula holds for a more general class of polytopes, lattice-face polytopes. We develop a way of decomposing any d-dimensional simplex in general position into d! signed sets, each of which corresponds to a permutation in the symmetric group, and reduce the problem of counting lattice points in a polytope in general position to that of counting lattice points in these special signed sets. Applying this decomposition to a lattice-face simplex, we obtain signed sets with …
It is known that a lattice path matroid polytope can be associated with two given noncrossing lattice paths on $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ with the same end points. In this short note we give explicit formulae for the $f$-vector, toric $f$- and $g$-polynomials of a lattice path matroid polytope when two boundary paths enclose a hook shape.
A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a perfectly matchable set of $G$ if the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. The perfectly matchable set polynomial of $G$, first made explicit by Ohsugi and Tsuchiya, is the (ordinary) generating function $p(G; z)$ for the number of perfectly matchable sets of $G$. In this work, we provide explicit recurrences for computing $p(G; z)$ for an arbitrary (simple) graph and use these to compute the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials for certain lattice polytopes. Namely, we show that $p(G; z)$ is the $h^*$-polynomial for certain classes of s…
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations. For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform project…
In this paper we investigate the number of integer points lying in dilations of lattice path matroid polytopes. We give a characterization of such points as polygonal paths in the diagram of the lattice path matroid. Furthermore, we prove that lattice path matroid polytopes are affinely equivalent to a family of distributive polytopes. As applications we obtain two new infinite families of matroids verifying a conjecture of De Loera et.~al. and present an explicit formula of the Ehrhart polynomial for one of them.
We prove the unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset, which was conjectured by Kirillov. First, based on a result due to Stanley, we show that this polynomial coincides with the $W$-polynomial for the zig-zag poset with some natural labeling. Then, its unimodality immediately follows from a result of Gasharov, which states that the $W$-polynomials of naturally labeled graded posets of rank $1$ or $2$ are unimodal.
It was observed by Bump et al. that Ehrhart polynomials in a special family exhibit properties similar to the Riemann ζ function. The construction was generalized by Matsui et al. to a larger family of reflexive polytopes coming from graphs. We prove several conjectures confirming when such polynomials have zeros on a certain line in the complex plane. Our main new method is to prove a stronger property called interlacing.
It is proved that a certain symmetric sequence of nonnegative integers arising in the enumeration of magic squares of given size n by row sums or, equivalently, in the generating function of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope of doubly stochastic n by n matrices, is equal to the h-vector of a simplicial polytope and hence that it satisfies the conditions of the g-theorem. The unimodality of this sequance, which follows, was conjectured by Stanley (1983). Several generalizations are given.
A polytope is integral if all of its vertices are lattice points. The constant term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integral polytope is known to be 1. In previous work, we showed that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice-face polytope are volumes of projections of the polytope. We generalize both results by introducing a notion of $k$-integral polytopes, where 0-integral is equivalent to integral. We show that the Ehrhart polynomial of a $k$-integral polytope $P$ has the properties that the coefficients in degrees less than or equal to $k$ are determined by a projection of …
Lorentzian polynomials, recently introduced by Brändén and Huh, generalize the notion of log-concavity of sequences to homogeneous polynomials whose supports are integer points of generalized permutahedra. Brändén and Huh show that normalizations of polynomials equaling integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra are Lorentzian; moreover, normalizations of certain projections of integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra with zero-one vertices are also Lorentzian. Taking this polytopal perspective further, we show that normalizations of certain projections of integer point t…
A seminal result of E. Ehrhart states that the number of integer lattice points in the dilation of a rational polytope by a positive integer $k$ is a quasi-polynomial function of $k$ --- that is, a "polynomial" in which the coefficients are themselves periodic functions of $k$. Using a result of F. Liu on the Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes, we construct not-necessarily-convex rational polytopes of arbitrary dimension in which the periods of the coefficient functions appearing in the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial take on arbitrary values.
V. Golyshev conjectured that for any smooth polytope P of dimension at most five, the roots $z\in\C$ of the Ehrhart polynomial for P have real part equal to -1/2. An elementary proof is given, and in each dimension the roots are described explicitly. We also present examples which demonstrate that this result cannot be extended to dimension six.
The Lidskii formula for the type $A_n$ root system expresses the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of the flow polytope of the complete graph with nonnegative integer netflows in terms of Kostant partition functions. For every integer polytope the volume is the leading coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial. The beauty of the Lidskii formula is the revelation that for these polytopes its Ehrhart polynomial function can be deduced from its volume function! Baldoni and Vergne generalized Lidskii's result for flow polytopes of arbitrary graphs $G$ and nonnegative integer netflows. While their formulas…
In this paper we show that the pipe dream complex associated to the permutation 1n(n-1)...2 can be geometrically realized as a triangulation of the vertex figure of a root polytope. Leading up to this result we show that the Grothendieck polynomial specializes to the h-polynomial of the corresponding pipe dream complex, which in certain cases equals the h-polynomial of canonical triangulations of root (and flow) polytopes, which in turn equals a specialization of the reduced form of a monomial in the subdivision algebra of root (and flow) polytopes. Thus, we connect Grothendieck polynomials to…
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. Fo…
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these f…
If $P\subset \R^d$ is a rational polytope, then $i_P(n):=#(nP\cap \Z^d)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $n$, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of $P$. The period of $i_P(n)$ must divide $\LL(P)= \min \{n \in \Z_{> 0} \colon nP \text{is an integral polytope}\}$. Few examples are known where the period is not exactly $\LL(P)$. We show that for any $\LL$, there is a 2-dimensional triangle $P$ such that $\LL(P)=\LL$ but such that the period of $i_P(n)$ is 1, that is, $i_P(n)$ is a polynomial in $n$. We also characterize all polygons $P$ such that $i_P(n)$ is a polynomial. In addition, we provide a cou…
Several polytopes arise from finite graphs. For edge and symmetric edge polytopes, in particular, exhaustive computation of the Ehrhart polynomials not merely supports the conjecture of Beck {\it et al.}\ that all roots $α$ of Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes of dimension $D$ satisfy $-D \le \Re(α) \le D - 1$, but also reveals some interesting phenomena for each type of polytope. Here we present two new conjectures: (1) the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of an edge polytope for a complete multipartite graph of order $d$ lie in the circle $|z+\tfrac{d}{4}| \le \tfrac{d}{4}$ or are negative int…
This is the first one of a series of papers on association of orientations, lattice polytopes, and abelian group arrangements to graphs. The purpose is to interpret the integral and modular tension polynomials of graphs at zero and negative integers. The whole exposition is put under the framework of subgroup arrangements and the application of Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to the following main results of the paper: (i) the reciprocity law for integral tension polynomials; (ii) the reciprocity law for modular tension polynomials; and (iii) a new interpretation for the value of the…
