Given a family of lattice polytopes, two common questions in Ehrhart Theory are determining when a polytope has the integer decomposition property and determining when a polytope is reflexive. While these properties are of independent interest, the confluence of these properties is a source of active investigation due to conjectures regarding the unimodality of the $h^\ast$-polynomial. In this paper, we consider the Newton polytopes arising from two families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics: Schur polynomials and inflated symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In both cases, we prove that these polytopes have the integer decomposition property by using the fact that both families of polynomials have saturated Newton polytope. Furthermore, in both cases, we provide a complete characterization of when these polytopes are reflexive. We conclude with some explicit formulas and unimodality implications of the $h^\ast$-vector in the case of Schur polynomials.
Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are inhomogeneous versions of Schur polynomials that arise in combinatorial $K$-theory. A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point in the polytope is an exponent vector. We show Newton polytopes of these Grothendieck polynomials and their homogeneous components have SNP. Moreover, the Newton polytope of each homogeneous component is a permutahedron. This addresses recent conjectures of C. Monical-N. Tokcan-A. Yong and of A. Fink-K. Mészáros-A. St. Dizier in this special case.
We give a combinatorial expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of skew Young diagrams in terms of skew Schur functions, using a new row insertion algorithm for set-valued semistandard tableaux of skew shape. This expansion unifies some previous results: it generalizes a combinatorial formula obtained in earlier joint work with López Martín and Teixidor i Bigas concerning Brill-Noether curves, and it generalizes a 2000 formula of Lenart and a recent result of Reiner-Tenner-Yong to skew shapes. We also give an expansion in the other direction: expressing skew Schur functions in terms o…
We study a family of dissections of flow polytopes arising from the subdivision algebra. To each dissection of a flow polytope, we associate a polynomial, called the left-degree polynomial, which we show is invariant of the dissection considered (proven independently by Grinberg). We prove that left-degree polynomials encode integer points of generalized permutahedra. Using that certain left-degree polynomials are related to Grothendieck polynomials, we resolve special cases of conjectures by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong regarding the saturated Newton polytope property of Grothendieck polynomials…
We prove Jacobi-Trudi-type determinantal formulas for skew dual Grothendieck polynomials which are $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials. We also prove a bialternant-type formula analogous to the classical definition of Schur polynomials.
It is a classical fundamental result that Schur-positive specializations of the ring of symmetric functions are characterized via totally positive functions whose parametrization describes the Edrei-Thoma theorem. In this paper we study positive specializations of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials.
Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are analogues of Schur polynomials in the K-theory of Grassmannians. We build dual families of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials using Schur operators. With this approach we prove skew Cauchy identity and then derive various applications: skew Pieri rules, dual filtrations of Young's lattice, generating series and enumerative identities. We also give a new explanation of the finite expansion property for products of Grothendieck polynomials.
Stable Grothendieck polynomials can be viewed as a K-theory analog of Schur polynomials. We extend stable Grothendieck polynomials to a two-parameter version, which we call canonical stable Grothendieck functions. These functions have the same structure constants (with scaling) as stable Grothendieck polynomials, and (composing with parameter switching) are self-dual under the standard involutive ring automorphism. We study various properties of these functions, including combinatorial formulas, Schur expansions, Jacobi-Trudi type identities, and associated Fomin-Greene operators.
Gustafson and Milne proved an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(λ_1-n+k,λ_2-n+k,\ldots,λ_k-n+k)$. On the other hand, Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi found an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(m-k,\ldots,m-k, λ_1,\ldots,λ_k)$. Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi gave a geometric explanation of their identity, and they raised the question of finding a combinatorial proof. In this paper, we establish a Gustafson-Milne type identity as well as a Fehér-Némethi-Rimányi type identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Specializing a factorial…
The question of when two skew Young diagrams produce the same skew Schur function has been well-studied. We investigate the same question in the case of stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are the K-theoretic analogues of the Schur functions. We prove a necessary condition for two skew shapes to give rise to the same dual stable Grothendieck polynomial. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition in the case where the two skew shapes are ribbons.
We construct a vertex model whose partition function is a refined dual Grothendieck polynomial, where the states are interpreted as nonintersecting lattice paths. Using this, we show refined dual Grothendieck polynomials are multi-Schur functions and give a number of identities, including a Littlewood and Cauchy(-Littlewood) identity. We then refine Yeliussizov's connection between dual Grothendieck polynomials and the last passage percolation (LPP) stochastic process discussed by Johansson. By refining algebraic techniques of Johansson, we show Jacobi-Trudi formulas for skew refined dual Grot…
Skew stable Grothendieck polynomials are $K$-theoretic analogues of skew Schur polynomials. We give a free-fermionic presentation of skew stable Grothendieck polynomials and their dual symmetric functions. By using our presentation, we derive a family of determinantal formulas, which are $K$-analogues of the Jacobi-Trudi formula for skew Schur functions. We also introduce a combinatorial method to calculate certain expansions of skew (dual) stable Grothendieck polynomials by using the non-commutative supersymmetric Schur functions.
Subword complexes are simplicial complexes introduced by Knutson and Miller to illustrate the combinatorics of Schubert polynomials and determinantal ideals. They proved that any subword complex is homeomorphic to a ball or a sphere and asked about their geometric realizations. We show that a family of subword complexes can be realized geometrically via regular triangulations of root polytopes. This implies that a family of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials are special cases of reduced forms in the subdivision algebra of root polytopes. We can also write the volume and Ehrhart series of root polyto…
The Schur polynomials $s_λ$ are essential in understanding the representation theory of the general linear group. They also describe the cohomology ring of the Grassmannians. For $ρ= (n, n-1, \dots, 1)$ a staircase shape and $μ\subseteq ρ$ a subpartition, the Stembridge equality states that $s_{ρ/μ} = s_{ρ/μ^T}$. This equality provides information about the symmetry of the cohomology ring. The stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$, and the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials $g_λ$, developed by Buch, Lam, and Pylyavskyy, are variants of the Schur polynomials and describe the $K$-theory of the…
In this paper, we study Grothendieck polynomials from a combinatorial viewpoint. We introduce the factorial Grothendieck polynomials, analogues of the factorial Schur functions and present some of their properties, and use them to produce a generalisation of a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Grothendieck polynomials.
In this paper we show that the pipe dream complex associated to the permutation 1n(n-1)...2 can be geometrically realized as a triangulation of the vertex figure of a root polytope. Leading up to this result we show that the Grothendieck polynomial specializes to the h-polynomial of the corresponding pipe dream complex, which in certain cases equals the h-polynomial of canonical triangulations of root (and flow) polytopes, which in turn equals a specialization of the reduced form of a monomial in the subdivision algebra of root (and flow) polytopes. Thus, we connect Grothendieck polynomials to…
For a given skew shape, we build a crystal graph on the set of all reverse plane partitions that have this shape. As a consequence, we get a simple extension of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the expansion of the corresponding dual stable Grothendieck polynomial in terms of Schur polynomials.
We introduce a family of tableaux that simultaneously generalizes the tableaux used to characterize Grothendieck polynomials and k-Schur functions. We prove that the polynomials drawn from these tableaux are the affine Grothendieck polynomials and k-K-Schur functions -- Schubert representatives for the K-theory of affine Grassmannians and their dual in the nil Hecke ring. We prove a number of combinatorial properties including Pieri rules.
The problem of computing products of Schubert classes in the cohomology ring can be formulated as the problem of expanding skew Schur polynomials into the basis of ordinary Schur polynomials. In contrast, the problem of computing the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmannian variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves is not equivalent to expanding skew stable Grothendieck polynomials into the basis of ordinary stable Grothendiecks. Instead, we show that the appropriate K-theoretic analogy is through the expansion of skew reverse plane partitions into t…
The ring of symmetric functions has a basis of dual Grothendieck polynomials that are inhomogeneous $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials. We prove that dual Grothendieck polynomials determine column distributions for a directed last-passage percolation model.
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations. For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform project…
Recently Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced the refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are symmetric functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ with additional parameters $t=(t_1,t_2,\dots)$. The refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are defined as a generating function for reverse plane partitions of a given shape. They interpolate between Schur functions and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in 2007. Flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a more refined version of refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, where lower and…
We prove that the dimension of the Specht module of a forest $G$ is the same as the normalized volume of the matching polytope of $G$. We also associate to $G$ a symmetric function $s_G$ (analogous to the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ for a partition $λ$) and investigate its combinatorial and representation-theoretic properties in relation to the Specht module and Schur module of $G$. We then use this to define notions of standard and semistandard tableaux for forests.
The dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a deformation of the Schur functions, originating in the study of the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We generalize these polynomials by introducing a countable family of additional parameters, and we prove that this generalization still defines symmetric functions. For this fact, we give two self-contained proofs, one of which constructs a family of involutions on the set of reverse plane partitions generalizing the Bender-Knuth involutions on semistandard tableaux, whereas the other classifies the structure of reverse plane partitions with entries 1…
We establish the conjecture of Reiner and Yong for an explicit combinatorial formula for the expansion of a Grothendieck polynomial into the basis of Lascoux polynomials. This expansion is a subtle refinement of its symmetric function version due to Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong, which gives the expansion of stable Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. Our expansion is the K-theoretic analogue of that of a Schubert polynomial into Demazure characters, whose symmetric analogue is the expansion of a Stanley symmetric fun…
We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.
Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials represen…
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. Fo…
We study the class $\mathcal C$ of symmetric functions whose coefficients in the Schur basis can be described by generating functions for sets of tableaux with fixed shape. Included in this class are the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, $k$-atoms, and Stanley symmetric functions; functions whose Schur coefficients encode combinatorial, representation theoretic and geometric information. While Schur functions represent the cohomology of the Grassmannian variety of $GL_n$, Grothendieck functions $\{G_λ\}$ represent the $K$-theory of the same space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description …
The machinery of noncommutative Schur functions provides a general tool for obtaining Schur expansions for combinatorially defined symmetric functions. We extend this approach to a wider class of symmetric functions, explore its strengths and limitations, and obtain new results on Schur positivity. We introduce combinatorial gadgets called switchboards, an adaptation of the D graphs of S. Assaf, and show how symmetric functions associated to them (which include LLT, Macdonald, Stanley, and stable Grothendieck polynomials) fit into the noncommutative Schur functions approach. This extends earli…
Recently, Guo and Sun derived an identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials which is a generalization of the one for Schur polynomials by Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi. We analyze the identity from the point of view of quantum integrability, based on the correspondence between the wavefunctions of a five-vertex model and the Grothendieck polynomials. We give another proof using the quantum inverse scattering method. We also apply the same idea and technique to derive an identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials for rectangular Young diagrams. Combining with the Guo-Sun identity, we get…
We formulate a nonrecursive combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of [Fomin-Kirillov '94] in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions. This gives a common generalization, as well as new proofs of the rule of [Fomin-Greene '98] for the expansion of the stable Schubert polynomials into Schur polynomials, and the K-theoretic Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule of [Buch '02]. The proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted and Edelman-Greene insertion algorithms. Our results are applied to prove a number of new formulas …
The symmetric Grothendieck polynomials representing Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians are generating functions for semistandard set-valued tableaux. We construct a type $A_n$ crystal structure on these tableaux. This crystal yields a new combinatorial formula for decomposing symmetric Grothendieck polynomials into Schur polynomials. For single-columns and single-rows, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of Lascoux polynomials (K-analogs of Demazure characters) by constructing a K-theoretic analog of crystals with an appropriate analog of a Demazure crystal. We relate o…
Grothendieck polynomials are important objects in the study of the $K$-theory of flag varieties. Their many remarkable properties have been studied in the context of algebraic geometry and tableaux combinatorics. We explore a new tool, similar to generating sequences, which we call the iterated residue technique. We prove new formulas on the calculus of iterated residues and use them to prove straightening laws and multiplication formulas for stable Grothendieck polynomials. As a further application of our method, we give new proofs that the $K$-Pieri rule and the expansions of Grothendieck po…
We review and present new studies on the relation between the partition functions of integrable lattice models and symmetric polynomials, and its combinatorial representation theory based on the correspondence, including our work. In particular, we examine the correspondence between the wavefunctions of the XXZ type, Felderhof type and the boson type integrable models and symmetric polynomials such as the Schur, Grothendieck and symplectic Schur functions. We also give a brief report of our work on generalizing the correspondence between the Felderhof models and factorial Schur and symplectic …
