We begin with the existence of groups with trivial duals for cardinals aleph_n (n in omega). Then we derive results about strongly aleph_n-free abelian groups of cardinality aleph_n (n in omega) with prescribed free, countable endomorphism ring. Finally we use combinatorial results of [Sh:108], [Sh:141] to give similar answers for cardinals >aleph_omega. As in Magidor and Shelah [MgSh:204], a paper concerned with the existence of kappa-free, non-free abelian groups of cardinality kappa, the induction argument breaks down at aleph_omega. Recall that aleph_omega is the first singular cardinal and such groups of cardinality aleph_omega do not exist by the well-known Singular Compactness Theorem (see [Sh:52]).
We consider what Ext(A,Z) can be when A is torsion-free and Hom(A,Z)=0. We thereby give an answer to a question of Golasinski and Goncalves which asks for the divisible Abelian groups which can be the type of a co-Moore space.
A group homomorphism eta:A-> H is called a localization of A if every homomorphism phi:A-> H can be `extended uniquely' to a homomorphism Phi:H-> H in the sense that Phi eta = phi. This categorical concepts, obviously not depending on the notion of groups, extends classical localizations as known for rings and modules. Moreover this setting has interesting applications in homotopy theory. For localizations eta:A-> H of (almost) commutative structures A often H resembles properties of A, e.g. size or satisfying certain systems of equalities and non-equalities. Perhaps the best known example is …
An abelian group is said to be aleph_1-free if all its countable subgroups are free. Our main result is: If R is a ring with R^+ free and |R|<lambda <= 2^{aleph_0}, then there exists an aleph_1-free abelian group G of cardinality lambda with End(G)=R . A corollary to this theorem is: Indecomposable aleph_1-free abelian groups of cardinality aleph_1 do exist.
We show that if $G$ is a group and $G$ has a graph-product decomposition with finitely-generated abelian vertex groups, then $G$ has two canonical decompositions as a graph product of groups: a unique decomposition in which each vertex group is a directly-indecomposable cyclic group, and a unique decomposition in which each vertex group is a finitely-generated abelian group and the graph satisfies the $T_0$ property. Our results build on results by Droms, Laurence and Radcliffe.
The construction of torsion-free abelian groups with prescribed endomorphism rings starting with Corner's seminal work is a well-studied subject in the theory of abelian groups. Usually these construction work by adding elements from a (topological) completion in order to get rid of (kill) unwanted homomorphisms. The critical part is to actually prove that every unwanted homomorphism can be killed by adding a suitable element. We will demonstrate that some of those constructions can be significantly simplified by choosing the elements at random. As a result, the endomorphism ring will be almos…
For groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$ containing an Anosov diffeomorphism, we give a complete classification for polycyclic Abelian-by-Cyclic group actions on $\T^2$ up to both topological conjugacy and smooth conjugacy under mild assumptions. Along the way, we also prove a Tits alternative type theorem for some groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$.
In this paper we study abelian and metabelian quotients of braid groups on oriented surfaces with boundary components. We provide group presentations and we prove rigidity results for these quotients arising from exact sequences related to (generalised) Fadell-Neuwirth fibrations.
We classify up to coarse equivalence all countable abelian groups of finite torsion free rank. The Q-cohomological dimension and the torsion free rank are the two invariants that give us such classification. We also prove that any countable abelian group of finite torsion free rank is coarsely equivalent to Z^n + H where H is a direct sum (possibly infinite) of cyclic groups. A partial generalization to countable abelian groups of the Gromov rigidity theorem for abelian groups is shown.
We show that Cayley graphs of finitely generated Abelian groups are rather rigid. As a consequence we obtain that two finitely generated Abelian groups admit isomorphic Cayley graphs if and only if they have the same rank and their torsion parts have the same cardinality. The proof uses only elementary arguments and is formulated in a geometric language.
The Bogomolov multiplier of a finite group $G$ is defined as the subgroup of the Schur multiplier consisting of the cohomology classes vanishing after restriction to all abelian subgroups of $G$. This invariant of $G$ plays an important role in birational geometry of quotient spaces $V/G$. We show that in many cases the vanishing of the Bogomolov multiplier is guaranteed by the rigidity of $G$ in the sense that it has no outer class-preserving automorphisms.
A rigid automorphism of a linking system is an automorphism which restricts to the identity on the Sylow subgroup. A rigid inner automorphism is conjugation by an element in the center of the Sylow subgroup. At odd primes, it is known that each rigid automorphism of a centric linking system is inner. We prove that the group of rigid outer automorphisms of a linking system at the prime $2$ is elementary abelian, and that it splits over the subgroup of rigid inner automorphisms. In a second result, we show that if an automorphism of a finite group $G$ restricts to the identity on the centric lin…
We study the quasi-isometric rigidity of a large family of finitely generated groups that split as graphs of groups with virtually free vertex groups and two-ended edge groups. Let $G$ be a group that is one-ended, hyperbolic relative to virtually abelian subgroups, and has JSJ decomposition over two-ended subgroups containing only virtually free vertex groups that aren't quadratically hanging. Our main result is that any group quasi-isometric to $G$ is abstractly commensurable to $G$. In particular, our result applies to certain "generic" HNN extensions of a free group over cyclic subgroups.
For an Abelian group $G$, any homomorphism $μ\colon G\otimes G\rightarrow G$ is called a \textsf{multiplication} on $G$. The set $\text{Mult}\,G$ of all multiplications on an Abelian group $G$ itself is an Abelian group with respect to addition; the group is called the \textsf{multiplication group} of $G$. Let $\mathcal{A}_0$ be the class of all reduced block-rigid almost completely decomposable groups of ring type with cyclic regulator quotient. In this paper, for groups $G\in \mathcal{A}_0$, we describe groups $\text{Mult}\,G$. We prove that for $G\in \mathcal{A}_0$, the group $\text{Mult}\,…
We say a subset $Σ\subseteq F_N$ of the free group of rank $N$ is \emph{spectrally rigid} if whenever $T_1, T_2 \in \cv_N$ are $\mathbb{R}$-trees in (unprojectivized) outer space for which $|σ|_{T_1} = |σ|_{T_2}$ for every $σ\in Σ$, then $T_1 = T_2$ in $\cv_N$. The general theory of (non-abelian) actions of groups on $\mathbb{R}$-trees establishes that $T \in \cv_N$ is uniquely determined by its translation length function $|\cdot|_T \colon F_N \to \mathbb{R}$, and consequently that $F_N$ itself is spectrally rigid. Results of Smillie and Vogtmann \cite{MR1182503}, and of Cohen, Lustig, and St…
We show that the smallest non-abelian quotient of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ is $\mathrm{PSL}_n(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}) = \mathrm{L}_n(2)$, thus confirming a conjecture of Mecchia--Zimmermann. In the course of the proof we give an exponential (in $n$) lower bound for the cardinality of a set on which $\mathrm{SAut}(F_n)$, the unique index $2$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$, can act non-trivially. We also offer new results on the representation theory of $\mathrm{SAut(F_n)}$ in small dimensions over small, positive characteristics, and on rigidity of maps from $\mathrm{SAut}(F_n)$ to finite groups of…
We consider amalgamated free product II$_1$ factors $M = M_1 *_B M_2 *_B ...$ and use ``deformation/rigidity'' and ``intertwining'' techniques to prove that any relatively rigid von Neumann subalgebra $Q\subset M$ can be intertwined into one of the $M_i$'s. We apply this to the case $M_i$ are w-rigid II$_1$ factors, with $B$ equal to either $\Bbb C$, to a Cartan subalgebra $A$ in $M_i$, or to a regular hyperfinite II$_1$ subfactor $R$ in $M_i$, to obtain the following type of unique decomposition results, à la Bass-Serre: If $M = (N_1 *_C N_2 *_C ...)^t$, for some $t>0$ and some other similar …
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
Applying Popa's orthogonality method to a new class of groups, we construct amenable group factors which are prime and have no infinite dimensional regular abelian *-subalgebras. By adjusting Farah--Katsura's solution of Dixmier's problem to the von Neumann algebra setting, we obtain the first examples of prime AFD factors and tensorially prime simple AF-algebras. Our results are proved in ZFC, thus in particular answering questions asked by Farah--Hathaway--Katsura--Tikuisis. We also directly determine central sequences of certain crossed products. This concludes the failure of the Kirchberg …
A Beauville surface is a rigid surface of general type arising as a quotient of a product of curves $C_{1}$, $C_{2}$ of genera $g_{1},g_{2}\ge 2$ by the free action of a finite group $G$. In this paper we study those Beauville surfaces for which $G$ is abelian (so that $G\cong \mathbb{Z}_{n}^{2}$ with $\gcd(n,6)=1$ by a result of Catanese). For each such $n$ we are able to describe all such surfaces, give a formula for the number of their isomorphism classes and identify their possible automorphism groups. This explicit description also allows us to observe that such surfaces are all defined o…
