A number alpha in R is diophantine if it is not well approximable by rationals, i.e. for some C, nu>0 and any relatively prime p, q in Z we have |alpha q -p|>C q^{-1-\vu}. It is well-known and easy to prove that almost every alpha in R is diophantine. In this paper we address a noncommutative version of the question about diophantine properties. Consider a pair A,B in SO(3) and for each n in Z_+ take all possible words in A, A^{-1}, B, and B^{-1} of length n, i.e. for a multiindex I=(i_1,j_1,..., i_s,j_s) put |I|=\sum_{k=1}^s (|i_k|+|j_k|) and W_{A,B}(n)={W_{I}(A,B)= A^{i_1}B^{j_1}... A^{i_s}B^{j_s}}_{|I|=n}.
Gamburd-Jakobson-Sarnak raised the problem: prove that for Haar almost every pair A, B in SO(3) the closest distance of the word of length n to the identity, i.e. s_{A,B}(n)=min_{|I|=n} |W_{I}(A,B)-Id|, is bounded from below by an exponential function in n. This is an analog of diophantine property for elements of SO(3). In this paper we make first step toward understanding diophantine properties of SO(3). We prove that s_{A,B}(n) is bounded from below by an exponential function in n^2. We also exhibit obstructions to prove a simple exponential in n estimate.
Rational Diophantine triples, i.e. rationals a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares, are often used in construction of elliptic curves with high rank. In this paper, we consider the opposite problem and ask how small can be the rank of elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine triples. It is easy to find rational Diophantine triples with elements with mixed signs which induce elliptic curves with rank 0. However, the problem of finding such examples of rational Diophantine triples with positive elements is much more challenging, and we will provide the first su…
A Diophantine $m$-tuple is a set $A$ of $m$ positive integers such that $ab+1$ is a perfect square for every pair $a,b$ of distinct elements of $A$. We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of Diophantine quadruples whose elements are bounded by $x$. In doing so, we extend two existing tools in ways that might be of independent interest. The Erd\H os-Turán inequality bounds the discrepancy between the number of elements of a sequence that lie in a particular interval modulo 1 and the expected number; we establish a version of this inequality where the interval is allowed to vary. We also…
For an element $r$ of a ring $R$, a Diophantine $D(r)$ $m$-tuple is an $m$-tuple $(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_m)$ of elements of $R$ such that for all $i,j$ with $i\neq j$, $a_ia_j+r$ is a perfect square in $R$. In this article, we compute and estimate the measures of the sets of $D(r)$ $m$-tuples in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers, as well as its residue field $\mathbb{F}_p$.
For a prime p, a Diophantine m-tuple in $\mathbb{F}_p$ is a set of m nonzero elements of $\mathbb{F}_p$ with the property that the product of any two of its distinct elements is one less than a square. In this paper, we present formulas for the number $N^{(m)}(p)$ of Diophantine m-tuples in $\mathbb{F}_p$ for m=2,3 and 4. Fourier coefficients of certain modular forms appear in the formula for the number of Diophantine quadruples. We prove that asymptotically $N^{(m)}(p)=\frac{1}{2^{m \choose 2 }}\frac{p^m}{m!} + o(p^m)$, and also show that if $p>2^{2m-2}m^2$, then there is at least one Diophan…
We provide several results on the diophantine properties of continued fractions on the Heisenberg group, many of which are analogous to classical results for real continued fractions. In particular, we show an analog of Khinchin's theorem and that convergents are also best approximants up to a constant factor of the denominator.
A Diophantine $m$-tuple is a set of $m$ distinct integers such that the product of any two distinct elements plus one is a perfect square. In this paper we study the extensibility of a Diophantine triple $\{k-1, k+1, 16k^3-4k\}$ in Gaussian integers $\mathbb{Z}[i]$ to a Diophantine quadruple. Similar one-parameter family, $\{k-1, k+1, 4k\}$, was studied in Franušić's previous paper, where it was shown that the extension to a Diophantine quadruple is unique (with an element $16k^3-4k$). The family of the triples of the same form $\{k-1, k+1, 16k^3-4k\}$ was already studied in rational integers.…
We study some diophantine properties of automatic real numbers and we present a method to derive irrationality measures for such numbers. As a consequence, we prove that the $b$-adic expansion of a Liouville number cannot be generated by a finite automaton, a conjecture due to Shallit.
We investigate the Diophantine property of a pair of elements in the group of affine transformations of the line. We say that a pair of elements g_1,g_2 in this group is Diophantine if there is a number A such that a product of length l of elements of the set {g_1,g_2,g_1^{-1},g_2^{-1}} is either the unit element or of distance at least A^{-l} from the unit element. We prove that the set of non-Diophantine pairs in a certain one parameter family is of Hausdorff dimension 0.
We prove that these Cantor sets are made up of transcendental numbers, apart from their endpoints $0$ and $1$, under some arithmetical assumptions on the data. To that purpose, we establish a criterion of linear independence over the field of algebraic numbers for the three numbers $1$, a characteristic Sturmian number, and an arbitrary Sturmian number with the same slope.
The paper is mostly a survey on recent results in Diophantine approximation, with emphasis on properties of exponents measuring various notions of Diophantine <approximation.
Let $a,b,c$ be fixed coprime positive integers with $\min\{a,b,c\}>1$. In this paper, combining the Gel'fond-Baker method with an elementary approach, we prove that if $\max\{a,b,c\}>5\times 10^{27}$, then the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ has at most three positive integer solutions $(x,y,z)$.
We study the existence of rational points on modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves over local fields and the structure of special fibres of these curves. We discuss some applications which include finding presentations for arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras, finding the equations of modular curves of $\cal{D}$-elliptic sheaves, and constructing curves violating the Hasse principle.
In this paper we define Diophantine exponents of lattices and investigate some of their properties. We prove transference inequalities and construct some examples with the help of Schmidt's subspace theorem.
For each integer $n\geq 1$ we consider the unique polynomials $P, Q\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$ of smallest degree $n$ that are solutions of the equation $P(x)x^{n+1}+Q(x)(x+1)^{n+1}=1$. We derive numerous properties of these polynomials and their derivatives, including explicit expansions, differential equations, recurrence relations, generating functions, resultants, discriminants, and irreducibility results. We also consider some related polynomials and their properties.
Motivated by the work of D. Y. Kleinbock, E. Lindenstrauss, G. A. Margulis, and B. Weiss, we explore the Diophantine properties of probability measures invariant under the Gauss map. Specifically, we prove that every such measure which has finite Lyapunov exponent is extremal, i.e. gives zero measure to the set of very well approximable numbers. We show on the other hand that there exist examples where the Lyapunov exponent is infinite and the invariant measure is not extremal. Finally, we answer in the negative a question posed by Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss, by constructing a family …
We consider irrational fixed points of the Minkowski question mark function $? (x)$, that is irrational solutions of the equation $? (x)=x$. It is easy to see that there exist at least two such points. Although it is not known if there are other fixed points, we prove that the smallest and the greatest fixed points have irrationality measure exponent equal to 2. We give more precise results about the approximation properties of these fixed points. Moreover, in Appendix we introduce a condition from which it follows that there are only two irrational fixed points.
For a nonzero integer $n$, a set of $m$ distinct nonzero integers $\{a_1,a_2,...,a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j+n$ is a perfect square for all $1 \leq i < j \leq m$, is called a $D(n)$-$m$-tuple. In this paper, we show that there infinitely many essentially different quadruples which are simultaneously $D(n_1)$-quadruples and $D(n_2)$-quadruples with $n_1\neq n_2$.
In this paper, we explicitly find all solutions of the title Diophantine equation, using lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms and properties of continued fractions. Further, we use a version of the Baker-Davenport reduction method in Diophantine approximation, due to Dujella and Pethö. This paper extends the previous work of \cite{Patel}.
We prove analogues of some classical results from Diophantine approximation and metric number theory (namely Dirichlet's theorem and the Duffin--Schaeffer theorem) in the setting of diagonal Diophantine approximation, i.e. approximating elements of $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{Q}_{p_1} \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Q}_{p_r}$ by elements of the diagonal embedding of $\mathbb{Q}$ into this space.
A Diophantine $m$-tuple with elements in the field $K$ is a set of $m$ non-zero (distinct) elements of $K$ with the property that the product of any two distinct elements is one less than a square in $K$. Let $X: (x^2-1)(y^2-1)(z^2-1)=k^2,$ be a threefold. Its $K$-rational points parametrize Diophantine triples over $K$ such that the product of the elements of the triple that corresponds to the point $(x,y,z,k)\in X(K)$ is equal to $k$. We denote by $\overline{X}$ the projective closure of $X$ and for a fixed $k$ by $X_k$ a variety defined by the same equation as $X$. We prove that the variety…
Let $\bar{X}_{n}=(x_{1},\ldots,x_{n})$ and $σ_{i}(\bar{X}_{n})=\sum x_{k_{1}}\ldots x_{k_{i}}$ be $i$-th elementary symmetric polynomial. In this note we prove that there are infinitely many triples of integers $a, b, c$ such that for each $1\leq i\leq n$ the system of Diophantine equations \begin{equation*} σ_{i}(\bar{X}_{2n})=a, \quad σ_{2n-i}(\bar{X}_{2n})=b, \quad σ_{2n}(\bar{X}_{2n})=c \end{equation*} has infinitely many rational solutions. This result extend the recent results of Zhang and Cai, and the author. Moreover, we also consider some Diophantine systems involving sums of powers. …
A finitely generated subgroup Γ of a real Lie group G is said to be Diophantine if there is β> 0 such that non-trivial elements in the word ball B_Γ(n) centered at the identity never approach the identity of G closer than |B_Γ (n)|^{-β}. A Lie group G is said to be Diophantine if for every k > 0, a random k-tuple in G generates a Diophantine subgroup. Semi-simple Lie groups are conjectured to be Diophantine but very little is proven in this direction. We give a characterization of Diophantine nilpotent Lie groups in terms of the ideal of laws of their Lie algebra. In particular we show that ni…
We investigate the large intersection properties of the set of points that are approximated at a certain rate by a family of affine subspaces. We then apply our results to various sets arising in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation, in the study of the homeomorphisms of the circle and in the perturbation theory for Hamiltonian systems.
We prove general sufficient and necessary conditions for the partition regularity of Diophantine equations, which extend the classic Rado's Theorem by covering large classes of nonlinear equations. Sufficient conditions are obtained by exploiting algebraic properties in the space of ultrafilters betaN, grounding on combinatorial properties of positive density sets and IP sets. Necessary conditions are proved by a new technique in nonstandard analysis, based on the use of the relation of u-equivalence for the hypernatural numbers *N.
In this paper, we study properties of the Diophantine exponents $w_n$ and $w_n^{*}$ for Laurent series over a finite field. We prove that for an integer $n\geq 1$ and a rational number $w>2n-1$, there exist a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers $(k_j)_{j\geq 1}$ and a sequence of algebraic Laurent series $(ξ_j)_{j\geq 1}$ such that deg $ξ_j=p^{k_j}+1$ and \begin{equation} w_1(ξ_j)=w_1 ^{*}(ξ_j)=\ldots =w_n(ξ_j)=w_n ^{*}(ξ_j)=w \end{equation} for any $j\geq 1$. For each $n\geq 2$, we give explicit examples of Laurent series $ξ$ for which $w_n(ξ)$ and $w_n^{*}(ξ)$ are different.
We present a new approach to metric Diophantine approximation on manifolds based on the correspondence between approximation properties of numbers and orbit properties of certain flows on homogeneous spaces. This approach yields a new proof of a conjecture of Mahler, originally settled by V. Sprindzhuk in 1964. We also prove several related hypotheses of A. Baker and V. Sprindzhuk formulated in 1970s. The core of the proof is a theorem which generalizes and sharpens earlier results on non-divergence of unipotent flows on the space of lattices.
For $λ\in (1/2, 1)$ and $α$, we consider sets of numbers $x$ such that for infinitely many $n$, $x$ is $2^{-αn}$-close to some $\sum_{i=1}^n ω_i λ^i$, where $ω_i \in \{0,1\}$. These sets are in Falconer's intersection classes for Hausdorff dimension $s$ for some $s$ such that $- \frac{1}α \frac{\log λ}{\log 2} \leq s \leq \frac{1}α$. We show that for almost all $λ\in (1/2, 2/3)$, the upper bound of $s$ is optimal, but for a countable infinity of values of $λ$ the lower bound is the best possible result.
In this notes we make a comparison between the arithmetic properties of irrational numbers and their dynamical properties under the Gauss map. We show some equivalences between different classifications of irrational numbers such as the Diophantine classes and numbers admitting approximations by rational numbers at a given 'speed'. We also show that irrational numbers with finite upper Lyapunov exponent for the Gauss map satisfy a Diophantine condition.
We prove that almost any pair of real numbers a,b, satisfies the following inhomogeneous uniform version of Littlewood's conjecture: (*) forall x,y in R, liminf_{|n|\to\infty} |n|<na - x> <nb - y> = 0, where <-> denotes the distance from the nearest integer. The existence of even a single pair that satisfies (*), solves a problem of Cassels from the 50's. We then prove that if 1,a,b span a totally real number field, then a,b, satisfy (*). It is further shown that if 1,a,b, are linearly dependent over Q, a,b cannot satisfy (*). The results are then applied to give examples of irregular orbit cl…
We prove two generalizations of Furstenberg's Diophantine result regarding density of an orbit of an irrational point in the one-torus under the action of multiplication by a non-lacunary multiplicative semi-group of $\mathbb{N}$. We show that for any sequences $\{a_{n} \},\{b_{n} \}\subset\mathbb{Z}$ for which the quotients of successive elements tend to $1$ as $n$ goes to infinity, and any infinite sequence $\{c_{n} \}$, the set $\{a_{n}b_{m}c_{k}x : n,m,k\in\mathbb{N} \}$ is dense modulo $1$ for every irrational $x$. Moreover, by ergodic-theoretical methods, we prove that if $\{a_{n} \},\{b…
In this paper we study the properties of the \emph{Triangular tree}, a complete tree of rational pairs introduced in \cite{cas}, in analogy with the main properties of the Farey tree (or Stern-Brocot tree). To our knowledge the Triangular tree is the first generalisation of the Farey tree constructed using the mediant operation. In particular we introduce a two-dimensional representation for the pairs in the tree, a coding which describes how to reach a pair by motions on the tree, and its description in terms of $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ matrices. The tree and the properties we study are then used t…
Let $β>1$ be a real number and define the $β$-transformation on $[0,1]$ by $T_β:x\mapsto βx\bmod 1$. Further, define $$W_y(T_β,Ψ):=\{x\in [0, 1]:|T_β^nx-y|<Ψ(n) \mbox{ for infinitely many $n$}\}$$ and $$W(T_β,Ψ):=\{(x, y)\in [0, 1]^2:|T_β^nx-y|<Ψ(n) \mbox{ for infinitely many $n$}\},$$ where $Ψ:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ is a positive function such that $Ψ(n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. In this paper, we show that each of the above sets obeys a Jarník-type dichotomy, that is, the generalised Hausdorff measure is either zero or full depending upon the convergence or divergence of a certain serie…
We establish arithmetical properties and provide essential bounds for bi-sequences of approximation coefficients associated with the natural extension of maps, leading to continued fraction-like expansions. These maps are realized as the fractional part of M$\operatorname{\ddot{o}}$bius transformations which carry the end points of the unit interval to zero and infinity, extending the classical regular and backwards continued fractions expansions.
Let $Y_0$ be a not very well approximable $m\times n$ matrix, and let $M$ be a connected analytic submanifold in the space of $m\times n$ matrices containing $Y_0$. Then almost all $Y\in M$ are not very well approximable. This and other similar statements are cast in terms of properties of certain orbits on homogeneous spaces and deduced from quantitative nondivergence estimates for `quasi-polynomial' flows on on the space of lattices.
We show that for almost all points on any analytic curve on R^{k} which is not contained in a proper affine subspace, the Dirichlet's theorem on simultaneous approximation, as well as its dual result for simultaneous approximation of linear forms, cannot be improved. The result is obtained by proving asymptotic equidistribution of evolution of a curve on a strongly unstable leaf under certain partially hyperbolic flow on the space of unimodular lattices in R^{k+1}. The proof involves ergodic properties of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces.
We exploit dynamical properties of diagonal actions to derive results in Diophantine approximations. In particular, we prove that the continued fraction expansion of almost any point on the middle third Cantor set (with respect to the natural measure) contains all finite patterns (hence is well approximable). Similarly, we show that for a variety of fractals in [0,1]^2, possessing some symmetry, almost any point is not Dirichlet improvable (hence is well approximable) and has property C (after Cassels). We then settle by similar methods a conjecture of M. Boshernitzan saying that there are no …
We present a new method of proving the Diophantine extremality of various dynamically defined measures, vastly expanding the class of measures known to be extremal. This generalizes and improves the celebrated theorem of Kleinbock and Margulis ('98) resolving Sprindžuk's conjecture, as well as its extension by Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss ('04), hereafter abbreviated KLW. As applications we prove the extremality of all hyperbolic measures of smooth dynamical systems with sufficiently large Hausdorff dimension, and of the Patterson--Sullivan measures of all nonplanar geometrically finite…
Following the development of weighted asymptotic approximation properties of matrices, we introduce the analogous uniform approximation properties (that is, study the improvability of Dirichlet's Theorem). An added feature is the use of general norms, rather than the supremum norm, to quantify the approximation. In terms of homogeneous dynamics, the approximation properties of an $m \times n$ matrix are governed by a trajectory in $\mathrm{SL}_{m+n}({\mathbb R})/\mathrm{SL}_{m+n}({\mathbb Z})$ avoiding a compact subset of the space of lattices called the critical locus defined with respect to …
We present a comprehensive framework for the study of the size and large intersection properties of sets of limsup type that arise naturally in Diophantine approximation and multifractal analysis. This setting encompasses the classical ubiquity techniques, as well as the mass and the large intersection transference principles, thereby leading to a thorough description of the properties in terms of Hausdorff measures and large intersection classes associated with general gauge functions. The sets issued from eutaxic sequences of points and optimal regular systems may naturally be described with…
small In this paper, we define $q$-analogues of Dirichlet's beta function at positive integers, which can be written as $β_q(s)=\sum_{k\geq1}\sum_{d|k}χ(k/d)d^{s-1}q^k$ for $s\in\N^*$, where $q$ is a complex number such that $|q|<1$ and $χ$ is the non trivial Dirichlet character modulo 4. For odd $s$, these expressions are connected with the automorphic world, in particular with Eisenstein series of level 4. From this, we derive through Nesterenko's work the transcendance of the numbers $β_q(2s+1)$ for $q$ algebraic such that $0<|q|<1$. Our main result concerns the nature of the numbers $β_q(2…
