Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed.
An indefinite generalization of Nudel'man's problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation, the method yealds new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solu…
An indefinite variant of the abstract interpolation problem is considered. Associated to this problem is a model Pontryagin space isometric operator V. All the solutions of the problem are shown to be in a one-to-one correspondence with a subset of the set of all unitary extenions U of V. These unitary extension U of V are realized as unitary colligations with the indefinite de Branges-Rovnyak space as a state space.
The Schur-Agler class consists of functions over a domain satisfying an appropriate von Neumann inequality. Originally defined over the polydisk, the idea has been extended to general domains in multivariable complex Euclidean space with matrix polynomial defining function as well as to certain multivariable noncommutative-operator domains with a noncommutative linear-pencil defining function. Still more recently there has emerged a free noncommutative function theory (functions of noncommuting matrix variables respecting direct sums and similaritytransformations). The purpose of the present p…
The class of Schur-Agler functions over a domain ${\mathcal D} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$ is defined as the class of holomorphic operator-valued functions on ${\mathcal D}$ for which a certain von Neumann inequality is satisfied when a commuting tuple of operators satisfying a certain polynomial norm inequality is plugged in for the variables. Such functions are alternatively characterized as those having a linear-fractional presentation which identifies them as transfer functions of a certain type of conservative structured multidimensional linear system. There now has been introduced a noncomm…
A boundary Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem is posed and solved in the quaternionic setting. Given nonnegative real numbers $κ_1, \ldots, κ_N$, quaternions $p_1, \ldots, p_N$ all of modulus $1$, so that the $2$-spheres determined by each point do not intersect and $p_u \neq 1$ for $u = 1,\ldots, N$, and quaternions $s_1, \ldots, s_N$, we wish to find a slice hyperholomorphic Schur function $s$ so that $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}} s(r p_u) = s_u\quad {\rm for} \quad u=1,\ldots, N,$$ and $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}}\frac{1-s(rp_u)\overline{s_u}}{1-r}\leκ_…
We study a general metric constrained interpolation problem in a de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}(K_S)$ associated with a contractive multiplier $S$ between two Fock spaces along with its commutative counterpart, a de Branges-Rovnyak space associated with a Schur multiplier on the Drury-Arveson space of the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$.
Following ideas from the Abstract Interpolation Problem of Katsnelson et al. (Operators in spaces of functions and problems in function theory, vol 146, pp 83-69, Naukova Dumka, Keiv, 1987) for Schur class functions, we study a general metric constrained interpolation problem for functions from a vector-valued de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}(K_S)$ associated with an operator-valued Schur class function $S$. A description of all solutions is obtained in terms of functions from an associated de Branges-Rovnyak space satisfying only a bound on the de Branges-Rovnyak-space norm. Attention is…
The CMV matrices and their sub-matrices are applied to the description of all solutions to the Schur interpolation problem for contractive analytic operator-valued functions in the unit disk (the Schur class functions).
The theory of Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation for matrix- and operator-valued Schur class functions on the unit disk is now well established. Recent work has produced extensions of the theory to a variety of multivariable settings, including the ball and the polydisk (both commutative and noncommutative versions), as well as a time-varying analogue. Largely independent of this is the recent Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem by P.S. Muhly and B. Solel for an abstract Hardy algebra set in the context of a Fock space built from a $W^*$-correspondence E over a $W^{*}$-alge…
It is well-known that every weakly convergent sequence in $\ell_1$ is convergent in the norm topology (Schur's lemma). Phillips' lemma asserts even more strongly that if a sequence $(μ_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ in $\ell_\infty'$ converges pointwise on $\{0,1\}^\mathbb N$ to $0$, then its $\ell_1$-projection converges in norm to $0$. In this note we show how the second category version of Schur's lemma, for which a short proof is included, can be used to replace in Phillips' lemma $\{0,1\}^\mathbb N$ by any of its subsets which contains all finite sets and having some kind of interpolation property f…
Known or essentially known results about duals of interpolation spaces are presented, taking a point of view sometimes slightly different from the usual one. Particular emphasis is placed on Alberto Calderon's theorem describing the duals of his complex interpolation spaces [A_0,A_1]_θ. The pace is slow, since these notes are intended for graduate students who have just begun to study interpolation spaces. This second version corrects some small misprints. It also draws attention to a convenient norming subspace of the dual of a complex interpolation space, and to the slight difference between…
In this paper we formulate and solve Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory type problems for tensor algebras with data given on the N-dimensional operator unit ball of a Hilbert space. We develop an approach based on the displacement structure theory.
We study the class $\mathcal{M}_p$ of Schur multipliers on the Schatten-von Neumann class $\mathcal{S}_p$ with $1 \leq p \leq \infty$ as well as the class of completely bounded Schur multipliers $\mathcal{M}_p^{cb}$. We first show that for $2 \leq p < q \leq \infty$ there exist $m \in \mathcal{M}_p^{cb}$ with $m \not \in \mathcal{M}_q$, so in particular the following inclusions that follow from interpolation are strict $\mathcal{M}_q \subsetneq \mathcal{M}_p$ and $\mathcal{M}^{cb}_q \subsetneq \mathcal{M}^{cb}_p$. In the remainder of the paper we collect computational evidence that for $p\not …
We present the fractional perimeter as a set-function interpolation between the Lebesgue measure and the perimeter in the sense of De Giorgi. Our motivation comes from a new fractional Boxing inequality that relates the fractional perimeter and the Hausdorff content and implies several known inequalities involving the Gagliardo seminorm of the Sobolev spaces $W^{α, 1}$ of order $0 < α< 1$.
Given a domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and a finite set of points $z_1,\ldots, z_n\in Ω$ and $w_1,\ldots, w_n\in \mathbb{D}$ (the open unit disc in the complex plane), the $Pick\, interpolation\, problem$ asks when there is a holomorphic function $f:Ω\rightarrow \overline{\mathbb{D}}$ such that $f(z_i)=w_i,1\leq i\leq n$. Pick gave a condition on the data $\{z_i, w_i:1\leq i\leq n\}$ for such an $interpolant$ to exist if $Ω=\mathbb{D}$. Nevanlinna characterized all possible functions $f$ that $interpolate$ the data. We generalize Nevanlinna's result to an arbitrary set $Ω$. In this case, the fu…
The Carathéodory problem in the $N$-variable non-commutative Herglotz--Agler class and the Carathéodory--Fejér problem in the $N$-variable non-commutative Schur--Agler class are posed. It is shown that the Carathéodory (resp., Carathéodory--Fejér) problem has a solution if and only if the non-commutative polynomial with given operator coefficients (the data of the problem indexed by an admissible set $Λ$) takes operator values with positive semidefinite real part (resp., contractive operator values) on $N$-tuples of $Λ$-jointly nilpotent contractive $n\times n$ matrices, for all $n\in\mathbb{N…
In a purely multi-variable setting (i.e., the issues discussed in this note are not interesting in the single variable operator theory setting), we show that the coincidence of two operator valued Schur class multipliers of a certain kind on the Drury-Arveson space is characterized by the fact that the associated colligations (or a variant, obtained canonically) are `unitarily coincident' in a sense to be made precise in the last section of this article.
We present two ways to compute the norm of a Foguel operator. One of these is algebraic and the other makes use of the Schur complement. This gives a two simpler proof of a result of Garcia. We also provide an extension of these results.
The Schur algebra is the algebra of operators which are bounded on l^1 and on l^{\infty}. Q. Sun conjectured that the Schur algebra is inverse-closed. In this note, we disprove this conjecture. Precisely, we exhibit an operator in the Schur algebra, invertible in l^2, whose inverse is not bounded on l^1 nor on l^{\infty}.
Let G be a block matrix function with one diagonal block A being positive definite and the off diagonal blocks complex conjugates of each other. Conditions are obtained for G to be factorable (in particular, with zero partial indices) in terms of the Schur complement of A.
A seminal result of Agler characterizes the so-called Schur-Agler class of functions on the polydisk in terms of a unitary colligation transfer function representation. We generalize this to the unit ball of the algebra of multipliers for a family of test functions over a broad class of semigroupoids. There is then an associated interpolation theorem. Besides leading to solutions of the familiar Nevanlinna-Pick and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation problems and their multivariable commutative and noncommutative generalizations, this approach also covers more exotic examples.
In this paper we study two separate problems on interpolation. We first give some new equivalences of Stout's Theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of points to be an interpolating sequence on a finite open Riemann surface. We next turn our attention to the question of interpolation for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the polydisc and provide a collection of equivalent statements about when it is possible to interpolation in the Schur-Agler class of the associated reproducing kernel Hilbert space.
In this short note, we merge the areas of hypercomplex algebras with that of fractal interpolation and approximation. The outcome is a new holistic methodology that allows the modelling of phenomena exhibiting a complex self-referential geometry and which require for their description an underlying algebraic structure.
Suppose that the linear operator $T$ maps $X_0$ compactly to $Y_0$ and also maps $X_1$ boundedly to $Y_1$. We deal once again with the 51 year old question of whether $T$ also always maps the complex interpolation space $[X_0,X_1]_θ$ compactly to $[Y_0,Y_1]_θ$. This is a short preliminary version of our promised technical sequel to our earlier paper arXiv:1410.4527 on this topic. It contains the following two small new partial results: (i) The answer to the above question is yes, in the particular case where $Y_0$ is a UMD-space. (ii) The answer to the above question is yes for given spaces $X…
Jim Agler revolutionized the area of Pick interpolation with his realization theorem for what is now called the Agler-Schur class for the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$. We discuss an extension of these results to algebras of functions arising from test functions and the dual notion of a family of reproducing kernels, as well as the related interpolation theorem. When working with test functions, one ideally wants to use as small a collection as possible. Nevertheless, in some situations infinite sets of test functions are unavoidable. When this is the case, certain topological considerations come…
In this note, we propose an unbalanced version of the quantum mechanical version of optimal mass transport that was based on the Lindblad equation. We formulate a natural interpolation framework between density matrices and matrix-valued measures via a quantum mechanical formulation of Fisher-Rao information and the matricial Wasserstein distance.
Given a finite set $σ$ of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ and a holomorphic function $f$ in $\mathbb{D}$ which belongs to a class $X$ we are looking for a function $g$ in another class $Y$ which minimizes the norm $|g|_{Y}$ among all functions $g$ such that $g_{|σ}=f_{|σ}$. Generally speaking, the interpolation constant considered is $c(σ,\, X,\, Y)={sup}{}_{f\in X,\,\parallel f\parallel_{X}\leq1}{inf}\{|g|_{Y}:\, g_{|σ}=f_{|σ}\} \,.$ When $Y=H^{\infty}$, our interpolation problem includes those of Nevanlinna-Pick (1916), Caratheodory-Schur (1908). Moreover, Carleson's free interpolation (1958) has…
The carpenter problem in the context of $II_1$ factors, formulated by Kadison asks: Let $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{M}$ be a masa in a type $II_1$ factor and let $E$ be the normal conditional expectation from $\mathcal{M}$ onto $\mathcal{A}$. Then, is it true that for every positive contraction $A$ in $\mathcal{A}$, there is a projection $P$ in $\mathcal{M}$ such that $E(P) = A$? In this note, we show that this is true if $A$ has finite spectrum. We will then use this result to prove an exact Schur-Horn theorem for (positive)operators with finite spectrum and an approximate Schur-Horn theore…
We introduce a "dual-space approach" to mixed Nevanlinna-Pick/Carathéodory-Schur interpolation in Banach spaces X of holomorphic functions on the disk. Our approach can be viewed as complementary to the well-known commutant lifting approach of D. Sarason and B. Nagy-C.Foiaş. We compute the norm of the minimal interpolant in X by a version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, which we use to extend functionals defined on a subspace of kernels without increasing their norm. This Functional extensions lemma plays a similar role as Sarason's Commutant lifting theorem but it only involves the predual of X a…
The aim of this note is to prove a law of large numbers for local patterns in discrete point processes. We investigate two different situations: a class of point processes on the one dimensional lattice including certain Schur measures, and a model of random plane partitions, introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin. The results state in both cases that the linear statistic of a function, weighted by the appearance of a fixed pattern in the random configuration and conveniently normalized, converges to the deterministic integral of that function weighted by the expectation with respect to the li…
We define a new notion of entropy for operators on Fock spaces and positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups. This is studied in connection with factorization theorems for (multi-Toeplitz, multi-analytic, etc.) operators on Fock spaces. These results lead to entropy inequalities and entropy formulas for positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups (resp.multi-Toeplitz operators) and consequences concerning the extreme points of the unit ball of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra F_n^\infty. We obtain several geometric characterizations of the multivar…
We extend Agler's notion of a function algebra defined in terms of test functions to include products, in analogy with the practice in real algebraic geometry, and hence the term preordering in the title. This is done over abstract sets and no additional property, such as analyticity, is assumed. Realization theorems give several equivalent ways of characterizing the unit ball (referred to as the Schur-Agler class) of the function algebras. These typically include, in Agler's terminology, a model (here called an Agler decomposition), a transfer function representation, and an analogue of the v…
We consider a homogeneous fractional Sobolev space obtained by completion of the space of smooth test functions, with respect to a Sobolev--Slobodecki\uı norm. We compare it to the fractional Sobolev space obtained by the $K-$method in real interpolation theory. We show that the two spaces do not always coincide and give some sufficient conditions on the open sets for this to happen. We also highlight some unnatural behaviors of the interpolation space. The treatment is as self-contained as possible.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra. We equip the associated noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with their natural operator space structure introduced by Pisier via complex interpolation. On the other hand, for $1<p<\infty$ let $$L_{p,p}(\mathcal{M})=\big(L_{\infty}(\mathcal{M}),\,L_{1}(\mathcal{M})\big)_{\frac1p,\,p}$$ be equipped with the operator space structure via real interpolation as defined by the second named author ({\em J. Funct. Anal}. 139 (1996), 500--539). We show that $L_{p,p}(\mathcal{M})=L_{p}(\mathcal{M})$ completely isomorphically if and only if $\mathcal{M}$ is f…
This note comprises a synthesis of certain results in the theory of exact interpolation between Hilbert spaces. In particular, we examine various characterizations of interpolation spaces and their relations to a number of results in operator-theory and in function-theory.
In the PhD thesis of the second author under the supervision of the third author was defined the class SI of J-contractive functions, depending on a parameter and arising as transfer functions of overdetermined conservative 2D systems invariant in one direction. In this paper we extend and solve in the class SI, a number of problems originally set for the class SC of functions contractive in the open right-half plane, and unitary on the imaginary line with respect to some preassigned signature matrix J. The problems we consider include the Schur algorithm, the partial realization problem and t…
