Jim Agler revolutionized the area of Pick interpolation with his realization theorem for what is now called the Agler-Schur class for the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$. We discuss an extension of these results to algebras of functions arising from test functions and the dual notion of a family of reproducing kernels, as well as the related interpolation theorem. When working with test functions, one ideally wants to use as small a collection as possible. Nevertheless, in some situations infinite sets of test functions are unavoidable. When this is the case, certain topological considerations come to the fore. We illustrate this with examples, including the multiplier algebra of an annulus and the infinite polydisk.
An abstract Pick interpolation theorem for a family of positive semi-definite kernels on a set $X$ is formulated. The result complements those in \cite{Ag} and \cite{AMbook} and will subsequently be applied to Pick interpolation on distinguished varieties \cite{JKM}.
The Schur-Agler class consists of functions over a domain satisfying an appropriate von Neumann inequality. Originally defined over the polydisk, the idea has been extended to general domains in multivariable complex Euclidean space with matrix polynomial defining function as well as to certain multivariable noncommutative-operator domains with a noncommutative linear-pencil defining function. Still more recently there has emerged a free noncommutative function theory (functions of noncommuting matrix variables respecting direct sums and similaritytransformations). The purpose of the present p…
We generalize Abrahamse's interpolation theorem from the setting of a multiply connected domain to that of a more general Riemann surface. Our main result provides the scalar-valued interpolation theorem for the fixed-point subalgebra of $H^\infty$ associated to the action of a Fuchsian group. We rely on two results from a paper of Forelli. This allows us to prove the interpolation result using duality techniques that parallel Sarason's approach to the interpolation problem for $H^\infty$. In this process we prove a more general distance formula, very much like Nehari's theorem, and obtain rel…
Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed.
We give a solution to Pick's interpolation problem on the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n\geq 2$, by characterizing all interpolation data that admit a $\mathbb{D}$-valued interpolant, in terms of a family of positive-definite kernels parametrized by a class of polynomials. This uses a duality approach that has been associated with Pick interpolation, together with some approximation theory. Furthermore, we use duality methods to understand the set of points on the $n$-torus at which the boundary values of a given solution to an extremal interpolation problem are not unimodular.
There are three new things in this paper about the open symmetrized bidisk $\mathbb G = \{(z_1+z_2, z_1z_2) : |z_1|, |z_2| < 1\}$. They are motivated in the Introduction. In this Abstract, we mention them in the order in which they will be proved. \begin{enumerate} \item The Realization Theorem: A realization formula is demonstrated for every $f$ in the norm unit ball of $H^\infty(\mathbb G)$. \item The Interpolation Theorem: Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem is proved for data from the symmetrized bidisk and a specific formula is obtained for the interpolating function. \item The Extensio…
We derive necessary density conditions for sampling and for interpolation in general reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces satisfying some natural conditions on the geometry of the space and the reproducing kernel. If the volume of shells is small compared to the volume of balls (weak annular decay property) and if the kernel possesses some off-diagonal decay or even some weaker form of localization, then there exists a critical density $D$ with the following property: a set of sampling has density $\geq D$, whereas a set of interpolation has density $\leq D$. The main theorem unifies many known d…
We introduce the following linear combination interpolation problem (LCI): Given $N$ distinct numbers $w_1,\ldots w_N$ and $N+1$ complex numbers $a_1,\ldots, a_N$ and $c$, find all functions $f(z)$ analytic in a simply connected set (depending on $f$) containing the points $w_1,\ldots,w_N$ such that \[ \sum_{u=1}^Na_uf(w_u)=c. \] To this end we prove a representation theorem for such functions $f$ in terms of an associated polynomial $p(z)$. We first introduce the following two operations, $(i)$ substitution of $p$, and $(ii)$ multiplication by monomials $z^j, 0\le j < N$. Then let $M$ be the …
If $\fA$ is a unital weak-$*$ closed algebra of multiplication operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space which has the property $\bA_1(1)$, then the cyclic invariant subspaces index a Nevanlinna-Pick family of kernels. This yields an NP interpolation theorem for a wide class of algebras. In particular, it applies to many function spaces over the unit disk including Bergman space. We also show that the multiplier algebra of a complete NP space has $\bA_1(1)$, and thus this result applies to all of its subalgebras. A matrix version of this result is also established. It applies, in particu…
This paper concerns a commutant lifting theorem and a Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation result in the setting of multipliers from vector-valued Drury-Arveson space to a large class of vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The special case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces includes all natural examples of Hilbert spaces like Hardy space, Bergman space and weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball.
This paper continues the study of interpolation operators on scattered data. We introduce the Poisson interpolation operator and prove various properties. The main result concerns functions in the Paley-Wiener space $PW_{B_β}$, and shows that one may recover these functions from their samples on a complete interpolating sequence for $[-δ,δ]^2$ by using the Poisson interpolation operator, provided that $0<β< (3-\sqrt{8})δ$.
Endpoint and Interpolation Estimates for Higher-Order Commutators of Rough Fractional Maximal Operators with Variable Kernels on Variable Exponent Morrey Spaces
In this paper we study two separate problems on interpolation. We first give some new equivalences of Stout's Theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of points to be an interpolating sequence on a finite open Riemann surface. We next turn our attention to the question of interpolation for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the polydisc and provide a collection of equivalent statements about when it is possible to interpolation in the Schur-Agler class of the associated reproducing kernel Hilbert space.
Given a fixed sigma-finite measure space $\left(X,\mathscr{B},ν\right)$, we shall study an associated family of positive definite kernels $K$. Their factorizations will be studied with view to their role as covariance kernels of a variety of stochastic processes. In the interesting cases, the given measure $ν$ is infinite, but sigma-finite. We introduce such positive definite kernels $K\left(\cdot,\cdot\right)$ with the two variables from the subset of the sigma-algebra $\mathscr{B}$, sets having finite $ν$ measure. Our setting and results are motivated by applications. The latter are covered …
We introduce $B_w^u$-function spaces which unify Lebesgue, Morrey-Campanato, Lipschitz, $B^p$, CMO, local Morrey-type spaces, etc., and investigate the interpolation property of $B_w^u$-function spaces. We also apply it to the boundedness of linear and sublinear operators, for example, the Hardy-Littlewood maximal and fractional maximal operators, singular and fractional integral operators with rough kernel, the Littlewood-Paley operator, Marcinkiewicz operator, and so on.
We study representations of positive definite kernels $K$ in a general setting, but with view to applications to harmonic analysis, to metric geometry, and to realizations of certain stochastic processes. Our initial results are stated for the most general given positive definite kernel, but are then subsequently specialized to the above mentioned applications. Given a positive definite kernel $K$ on $S\times S$ where $S$ is a fixed set, we first study families of factorizations of $K$. By a factorization (or representation) we mean a probability space $\left(B,μ\right)$ and an associated stoc…
