A seminal result of Agler characterizes the so-called Schur-Agler class of functions on the polydisk in terms of a unitary colligation transfer function representation. We generalize this to the unit ball of the algebra of multipliers for a family of test functions over a broad class of semigroupoids. There is then an associated interpolation theorem. Besides leading to solutions of the familiar Nevanlinna-Pick and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation problems and their multivariable commutative and noncommutative generalizations, this approach also covers more exotic examples.
A free semigroupoid algebra is the closure of the algebra generated by a TCK family of a graph in the weak operator topology. We obtain a structure theory for these algebras analogous to that of free semigroup algebra. We clarify the role of absolute continuity and wandering vectors. These results are applied to obtain a Lebesgue-von Neumann-Wold decomposition of TCK families, along with reflexivity, a Kaplansky density theorem and classification for free semigroupoid algebras. Several classes of examples are discussed and developed, including self-adjoint examples and a classification of atom…
For a smooth manifold with boundary we construct a semigroupoid and a continuous field of C*-algebras which extend Connes' construction of the tangent groupoid. We show the asymptotic multiplicativity of \hbar-scaled truncated pseudodifferential operators with smoothing symbols and compute the K-theory of the associated symbol algebra.
We begin the study of a new class of operator algebras that arise from higher rank graphs. Every higher rank graph generates a Fock space Hilbert space and creation operators which are partial isometries acting on the space. We call the weak operator topology closed algebra generated by these operators a 'higher rank semigroupoid algebra'. A number of examples are discussed in detail, including the single vertex case and higher rank cycle graphs. In particular the cycle graph algebras are identified as matricial multivariable function algebras. We obtain reflexivity for a wide class of graphs …
We studied complex interpolation noncommutative Hardy space associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebra and extend Pisier's interpolation theorem for this case.
We compare and classify various types of Banach algebra norms on mathbb{C}^k through geometric properties of their unit balls. This study is motivated by various open problems in interpolation theory and in the isometric characterization of operator algebra norms.
The closed one-sided ideals of a C*-algebra are exactly the closed subspaces supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection. Let A be a (not necessarily selfadjoint) subalgebra of a unital C*-algebra B which contains the unit of B. Here we characterize the right ideals of A with left contractive approximate identity as those subspaces of A supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection in B** which also lies in the weak* closure of A. Although this seems quite natural, the proof requires a set of new techniques which may may be viewed as a noncommutative version o…
The properties of the compactness of interpolation sets of algebras of generalized analytic functions are investigated and convenient sufficient conditions for interpolation are given.
If $\fA$ is a unital weak-$*$ closed algebra of multiplication operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space which has the property $\bA_1(1)$, then the cyclic invariant subspaces index a Nevanlinna-Pick family of kernels. This yields an NP interpolation theorem for a wide class of algebras. In particular, it applies to many function spaces over the unit disk including Bergman space. We also show that the multiplier algebra of a complete NP space has $\bA_1(1)$, and thus this result applies to all of its subalgebras. A matrix version of this result is also established. It applies, in particu…
Jim Agler revolutionized the area of Pick interpolation with his realization theorem for what is now called the Agler-Schur class for the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$. We discuss an extension of these results to algebras of functions arising from test functions and the dual notion of a family of reproducing kernels, as well as the related interpolation theorem. When working with test functions, one ideally wants to use as small a collection as possible. Nevertheless, in some situations infinite sets of test functions are unavoidable. When this is the case, certain topological considerations come…
We study the multiplier algebras $A(\mathcal{H})$ obtained as the closure of the polynomials on certain reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ on the ball $\mathbb{B}_d$ of $\mathbb{C}^d$. Our results apply, in particular, to the Drury-Arveson space, the Dirichlet space and the Hardy space on the ball. We first obtain a complete description of the dual and second dual spaces of $A(\mathcal H)$ in terms of the complementary bands of Henkin and totally singular measures for $\operatorname{Mult}(\mathcal{H})$. This is applied to obtain several definitive results in interpolation. In part…
Given an inner function $B$ we classify the invariant subspaces of the algebra $H^\infty_B:=\mathbb{C}+BH^\infty$. We derive a formula in terms of these invariant subspaces for the distance of an element in $L^\infty$ to a certain weak*-closed ideal in $H^\infty_B$ and use this to prove an analogue of the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem.
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ and a $W^{\ast}$-correspondence $E$ over $M$, we construct an algebra $H^{\infty}(E)$ that we call the Hardy algebra of $E$. When $M=\mathbb{C}=E$, then $H^{\infty}(E)$ is the classical Hardy space $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{T})$ of bounded analytic functions on the unit disc. We show that given any faithful normal representation $σ$ of $M$ on a Hilbert space $H$ there is a natural correspondence $E^σ$ over the commutant $σ(M)^{\prime}$, called the $σ$-dual of $E$, and that $H^{\infty}(E)$ can be realized in terms of ($B(H)$-valued) functions on the open unit ball $\ma…
We consider the closed algebra $\mathcal{A}_d$ generated by the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. We identify $\mathcal{A}_d^*$ as a direct sum of the preduals of the full multiplier algebra and of a commutative von Neumann algebra, and establish analogues of many classical results concerning the dual space of the ball algebra. These developments are deeply intertwined with the problem of peak interpolation for multipliers, and we generalize a theorem of Bishop-Carleson-Rudin to this setting by means of Choquet type integral representations. As a byproduct we shed some light o…
We continue our study of operator algebras with and contractive approximate identities (cais). In earlier papers we have introduced and studied a new notion of positivity in operator algebras, with an eye to extending certain C*-algebraic results and theories to more general algebras. Here we continue to develop this positivity and its associated ordering, proving many foundational facts. We also give many applications, for example to noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets, lifting problems, peak interpolation, approximate identities, and to order relations between an operator algeb…
In this short note, we merge the areas of hypercomplex algebras with that of fractal interpolation and approximation. The outcome is a new holistic methodology that allows the modelling of phenomena exhibiting a complex self-referential geometry and which require for their description an underlying algebraic structure.
In a Euclidean Jordan algebra $V$ of rank $n$ which carries the trace inner product, to each element $a$ we associate the eigenvalue vector $λ(a)$ in $R^n$ whose components are the eigenvalues of $a$ written in the decreasing order. For any $p\in [1,\infty]$, we define the spectral $p$-norm of $a$ to be the $p$-norm of $λ(a)$ in $R^n$. In a recent paper, based on the $K$-method of real interpolation theory and a majorization technique, we described an interpolation theorem for a linear transformation on $V$ relative to the same spectral norm. In this paper, using standard complex function theo…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra. We equip the associated noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with their natural operator space structure introduced by Pisier via complex interpolation. On the other hand, for $1<p<\infty$ let $$L_{p,p}(\mathcal{M})=\big(L_{\infty}(\mathcal{M}),\,L_{1}(\mathcal{M})\big)_{\frac1p,\,p}$$ be equipped with the operator space structure via real interpolation as defined by the second named author ({\em J. Funct. Anal}. 139 (1996), 500--539). We show that $L_{p,p}(\mathcal{M})=L_{p}(\mathcal{M})$ completely isomorphically if and only if $\mathcal{M}$ is f…
General results of interpolation (eg. Nevanlinna-Pick) by elements in the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra $F^\infty$ (resp. noncommutative disc algebra $A_n$) with consequences to the interpolation by bounded operator-valued analytic functions in the unit ball of ${\bf C}^n$ are obtained. Non-commutative Poisson transforms are used to provide new von Neumann type inequalities. Completely isometric representations of the quotient algebra $F^\infty/J$ on Hilbert spaces, where $J$ is any $w^*$-closed, 2-sided ideal of $F^\infty$, are obtained and used to construct a $w^*$-continuous, $F^…
In a Euclidean Jordan algebra V of rank n which carries the trace inner product, to each element x we associate the eigenvalue vector whose components are the eigenvalues of x written in the decreasing order. For any number p between (and including) one and infinity, we define the spectral p-norm of x to be the p-norm of the corresponding eigenvalue vector in the Euclidean n-space. In this paper, we show that for any two elements x and y, the one-norm of the Jordan product xoy is less than or equal to the product of p-norm of x and q-norm of y, where q is the conjugate of p. For a linear trans…
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a ($σ$-finite) von Neumann algebra associated with a normal faithful state $ϕ.$ We prove a complex interpolation result for a couple of two (quasi) Haagerup noncommutative $L_p$-spaces $L_{p_0} (\mathcal{M}, ϕ)$ and $L_{p_1} (\mathcal{M}, ϕ), 0< p_0 < p_1\leq \infty,$ which has further applications to the sandwiched $p$-Rényi divergence.
Peak interpolation is concerned with a foundational kind of mathematical task: building functions in a fixed algebra $A$ which have prescribed values or behaviour on a fixed closed subset (or on several disjoint subsets). In this paper we do the same but now $A$ is an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. We briefly survey this {\em noncommutative peak interpolation}, which we have studied with coauthors in a long series of papers, and whose basic theory now appears to be approaching its culmination. This program developed from, and is based partly on, theorems of Hay and Read whose proofs …
The theory of Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation for matrix- and operator-valued Schur class functions on the unit disk is now well established. Recent work has produced extensions of the theory to a variety of multivariable settings, including the ball and the polydisk (both commutative and noncommutative versions), as well as a time-varying analogue. Largely independent of this is the recent Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem by P.S. Muhly and B. Solel for an abstract Hardy algebra set in the context of a Fock space built from a $W^*$-correspondence E over a $W^{*}$-alge…
We devise a fairly general method for estimating the size of quotients between algebras of functions on a locally compact group. This method is based on the concept of interpolation sets and unifies the approaches followed by many authors to obtain particular cases. Among the applications we find, we obtain that the quotients WAP(G)/B(G) (G being a locally compact group in the class [IN] or a nilpotent locally compact group) and CB(G)/LUC(G) (G being any non-compact non-discrete locally compact group) contain a linearly isometric copy of \ell_\infty(κ(G)) where κ(G) is the compact covering num…
It was recently shown that the theory of linear stochastic systems can be viewed as a particular case of the theory of linear systems on a certain commutative ring of power series in a countable number of variables. In the present work we study an interpolation problem in this setting. A key tool is the principle of permanence of algebraic identities.
Given a collection $K$ of positive integers, let $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$ denote the set of all bounded analytic functions defined on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$ whose $k^{\text{th}}$ derivative vanishes at zero, for all $k \in K$. In this paper, we establish a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation result for the subalgebra $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$, where $K = \{1,2,\dotsc,k\}$, which is a slight generalization of the interpolation theorem that Davidson, Paulsen, Raghupathi, and Singh proved for the algebra $H^{\infty}_{\{1\}}(\mathbb{D})$. Furthermore, we provide a sufficient condi…
We investigate the Pick problem for the polydisk and unit ball using dual algebra techniques. Some factorization results for Bergman spaces are used to describe a Pick theorem for any bounded region in $\mathbb{C}^d$.
This article treats Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the setting of a special class of algebraic curves called distinguished varieties. An interpolation theorem, along with additional operator theoretic results, is given using a family of reproducing kernels naturally associated to the variety. The examples of the Neil parabola and doubly connected domains are discussed.
We study thin interpolating sequences $\{λ_n\}$ and their relationship to interpolation in the Hardy space $H^2$ and the model spaces $K_Θ= H^2 \ominus ΘH^2$, where $Θ$ is an inner function. Our results, phrased in terms of the functions that do the interpolation as well as Carleson measures, show that under the assumption that $Θ(λ_n) \to 0$ the interpolation properties in $H^2$ are essentially the same as those in $K_Θ$.
Extending and unifying concepts extensively used in the literature, we introduce the notion of approximable interpolation sets for algebras of functions on locally compact groups, especially for weakly almost periodic functions and for uniformly continuous functions. We characterize approximable interpolation sets both in combinatorial terms and in terms of the $\mathscr{LUC}$- and $\mathscr{WAP}$-compactifications and analyze some of their properties.
We study multipliers of Hardy-Orlicz spaces $\mH_Φ$ which are strictly contained between $\bigcup_{p>0}H^p$ and so-called ``big'' Hardy-Orlicz spaces. Big Hardy-Orlicz spaces, carrying an algebraic structure, are equal to their multiplier algebra, whereas in classical Hardy spaces $H^p$, the multipliers reduce to $H^{\infty}$. For Hardy-Orlicz spaces $\mH_Φ$ between these two extremal situations and subject to some conditions, we exhibit multipliers that are in Hardy-Orlicz spaces the defining functions of which are related to $Φ$. Even if the results do not entirely characterize the multiplie…
