Given an inner function $B$ we classify the invariant subspaces of the algebra $H^\infty_B:=\mathbb{C}+BH^\infty$. We derive a formula in terms of these invariant subspaces for the distance of an element in $L^\infty$ to a certain weak*-closed ideal in $H^\infty_B$ and use this to prove an analogue of the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem.
Recent results of Davidson-Paulsen-Raghupathi-Singh give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem on the unit disk with the additional restriction that the interpolant should have the value of its derivative at the origin equal to zero. This concrete mild generalization of the classical problem is prototypical of a number of other generalized Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problems which have appeared in the literature (for example, on a finitely-connected planar domain or on the polydisk). We extend the results of Davidson…
We continue the investigation of the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. In contrast to previous work in this area, we do not study these spaces by identifying them with restrictions of a universal space, namely the Drury-Arveson space. Instead, we work directly with the Hilbert spaces and their reproducing kernels. In particular, we show that two multiplier algebras of Nevanlinna-Pick spaces on the same set are equal if and only if the Hilbert spaces are equal. Most of the article is devoted to the study …
We give a new treatment of Quiggin's and McCullough's characterization of complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernels. We show that a kernel has the matrix-valued Nevanlinna-Pick property if and only if it has the vector-valued Nevanlinna-Pick property. We give a representation of all complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernels, and show that they are all restrictions of a universal complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernel.
We characterize the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces with complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. Our method relies on the general theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
If $\fA$ is a unital weak-$*$ closed algebra of multiplication operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space which has the property $\bA_1(1)$, then the cyclic invariant subspaces index a Nevanlinna-Pick family of kernels. This yields an NP interpolation theorem for a wide class of algebras. In particular, it applies to many function spaces over the unit disk including Bergman space. We also show that the multiplier algebra of a complete NP space has $\bA_1(1)$, and thus this result applies to all of its subalgebras. A matrix version of this result is also established. It applies, in particu…
Suppose $\fA$ is an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space $H$ and $A_1,..., A_n \in \fA$. If the row operator $[A_1,..., A_n] \in B(H^{(n)},H)$ has a right inverse in $B(H, H^{(n)})$, the Toeplitz corona problem for $\fA$ asks if a right inverse can be found with entries in $\fA$. When $H$ is a complete Nevanlinna-Pick space and $\fA$ is a weakly-closed algebra of multiplication operators on $H$, we show that under a stronger hypothesis, the corona problem for $\fA$ has a solution. When $\fA$ is the full multiplier algebra of $H$, the Toeplitz corona theorems of Arveson, Schubert and Ball-Tr…
We show that the Hardy space on the unit disk is the only non-trivial irreducible reproducing kernel Hilbert space which satisfies the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property and hyponormality of all multiplication operators.
This paper concerns a commutant lifting theorem and a Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation result in the setting of multipliers from vector-valued Drury-Arveson space to a large class of vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The special case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces includes all natural examples of Hilbert spaces like Hardy space, Bergman space and weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball.
We solve a three point Nevanlinna-Pick problem in the Euclidean ball. In particular, we determine a class of rational functions that interpolate this problem.
In this paper we study the Nevanlinna-Pick matrix interpolation problem in the Carathéodory class with infinite data (both in the nondegenerate and degenerate cases). We develop the Szökefalvi-Nagy and Korányi operator approach to obtain an analytic description of all solutions of the problem. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the determinacy of the problem are given.
We prove a factorization theorem for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces whose kernel has a normalized complete Nevanlinna-Pick factor. This result relates the functions in the original space to pointwise multipliers determined by the Nevanlinna-Pick kernel and has a number of interesting applications. For example, for a large class of spaces including Dirichlet and Drury-Arveson spaces, we construct for every function $f$ in the space a pluriharmonic majorant of $|f|^2$ with the property that whenever the majorant is bounded, the corresponding function $f$ is a pointwise multiplier.
We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the unit ball with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property through the representation theory of their algebras of multipliers. We give a complete description of the representations in terms of the reproducing kernels. While representations always dilate to $*$-representations of the ambient $C^*$-algebra, we show that in our setting we automatically obtain coextensions. In fact, we show that in many cases, this phenomenon characterizes the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. We also deduce operator theoretic dilation results which are in the spirit of…
We provide an effective single-matrix criterion, in terms of what we call the elementary Pick matrix, for the solvability of the noncommutative Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the row ball, and provide some applications. In particular we show that the so-called "column-row property" fails for the free semigroup algebras, in stark contrast to the analogous commutative case. Additional applications of the elementary Pick matrix include a local dilation theorem for matrix row contractions and interpolating sequences in the noncommutative setting. Finally we present some numerical results…
In \cite{ds_hfs}, a geometric procedure for constructing a Nevanlinna-Pick problem on $\D^n$ with a specified set of uniqueness was established. In this sequel we conjecture a necessary and a sufficient condition for a Nevanlinna-Pick problem on $\DT$ to have a unique solution. We use the results of \cite{ds_hfs} and Bezout's theorem to establish three special cases of this conjecture.
We describe those reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on domains in ${\Bbb C}^d$ for which an analogue of the Nevanlinna-Pick theorem holds, in other words when the existence of a (possibly matrix-valued) function in the unit ball of the multiplier algebra with specified values on a finite set of points is equivalent to the positvity of a related matrix. Our description is in terms of a certain localization property of the kernel.
In the paper we discuss the problem of uniqueness of left inverses (solutions of two point Nevanlinna-Pick problem) in bounded convex domains, strongly linearly convex domains, the symmetrized bidisc and the tetrablock.
The main objects under study are quotients of multiplier algebras of certain complete Nevanlinna--Pick spaces, examples of which include the Drury--Arveson space on the ball and the Dirichlet space on the disc. We are particularly interested in the non-commutative Choquet boundaries for these quotients. Arveson's notion of hyperrigidity is shown to be detectable through the essential normality of some natural multiplication operators, thus extending previously known results on the Arveson--Douglas conjecture. We also highlight how the non-commutative Choquet boundaries of these quotients are i…
This article treats Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the setting of a special class of algebraic curves called distinguished varieties. An interpolation theorem, along with additional operator theoretic results, is given using a family of reproducing kernels naturally associated to the variety. The examples of the Neil parabola and doubly connected domains are discussed.
We study several aspects concerning slice regular functions mapping the quaternionic open unit ball into itself. We characterize these functions in terms of their Taylor coefficients at the origin and identify them as contractive multipliers of the Hardy space. In addition, we formulate and solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the class of such functions presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and for the uniqueness of a solution. Finally, we describe all solutions to the problem in the indeterminate case.
We provide a short argument to establish a Beurling-Lax-Halmos theorem for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces whose kernel has a complete Nevanlinna-Pick factor. We also record factorization results for pairs of nested invariant subspaces.
The theory of Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation for matrix- and operator-valued Schur class functions on the unit disk is now well established. Recent work has produced extensions of the theory to a variety of multivariable settings, including the ball and the polydisk (both commutative and noncommutative versions), as well as a time-varying analogue. Largely independent of this is the recent Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theorem by P.S. Muhly and B. Solel for an abstract Hardy algebra set in the context of a Fock space built from a $W^*$-correspondence E over a $W^{*}$-alge…
In the paper `Distinguished Varieties,' Agler and McCarthy used Hilbert function spaces to study the uniqueness properties of the Nevanlinna-Pick problem on the bidisc. In this work we give a geometric procedure for constructing a Nevanlinna-Pick problems on D^n with a specified set of uniqueness. On the way to establishing this procedure, we prove a result about Hilbert function spaces and partially answer a question posed by Agler and McCarthy.
This note finds a new characterization of complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernels on the Euclidean unit ball. The classical theory of Sz.-Nagy and Foias about the characteristic function is extended in this note to a commuting tuple $\bfT$ of bounded operators satisfying the natural positivity condition of $1/k$-contractivity for an irreducible unitarily invariant complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernel. The characteristic function is a multiplier from $H_k \otimes \cE$ to $H_k \otimes \cF$, {\em factoring} a certain positive operator, for suitable Hilbert spaces $\cE$ and $\cF$ depending on $\bfT$. There is…
The connection between the standard $H^\infty$-problem in control theory and Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in operator theory was established in the 1980s, and has led to a fruitful cross-pollination between the two fields since. In the meantime, research in $H^\infty$-control theory has moved on to the study of robust control for systems with structured uncertainties and to various types of multidimensional systems, while Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theory has moved on independently to a variety of multivariable settings. Here we review these developments and indicate the precise connection…
The main results presented in this paper provide a complete and explicit description of all solutions to the left tangential operator Nevanlinna- Pick interpolation problem assuming the associated Pick operator is strictly positive. The complexity of the solutions is similar to that found in descriptions of the sub-optimal Nehari problem and variation on the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the Wiener class that have been obtained through the band method. The main techniques used to derive the formulas are based on the theory of co-isometric realizations, and use the Douglas factorizat…
The main goal of the paper is to study $m$-extremal mappings in the symmetrized bidisc showing that they are rational and $\GG_2$-inner which, in particular, answers a question posed in \cite{Agl-Lyk-You 2013}.
It is very elementary to observe that functions interpolating an extremal two-point Pick problem on the polydisc are just left inverses to complex geodesics. In the present article we show that the same property holds for a three-point Pick problem on polydiscs, i.e. it may be expressed it in terms of three-complex geodesics. Using this idea we are able to solve that problem obtaining formulas and a uniqueness theorem for solutions of extremal problems. In particular, we determine a class of rational inner functions interpolating that problem. Possible extensions and further investigations are…
We introduce the notion of a λ-nonisotropically balanced domain and show that the symmetrized polydisc in C^n, n \geq 2, is an example of such a domain. Given a λ-nonisotropically balanced domain Ω, we derive effective estimates from above and from below for the Lempert function at (0,z)\inΩ\timesΩ. We use these estimates to derive certain conditions for realising a two-point Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the symmetrized polydisc. Applying the ideas used in the derivation of our Lempert function estimates to the so-called spectral unit ball Ω_n, we deduce: a) a formula for the Lempert funct…
Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation developed from a topic in classical complex analysis to a useful tool for solving various problems in control theory and electrical engineering. Over the years many extensions of the original problem were considered, including extensions to different function spaces, nonstationary problems, several variable settings and interpolation with matrix and operator points. Here we discuss a variation on Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation for positive real odd functions evaluated in real matrix points. This problem was studied by Cohen and Lewkowicz using convex invertible con…
Given a collection $K$ of positive integers, let $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$ denote the set of all bounded analytic functions defined on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$ whose $k^{\text{th}}$ derivative vanishes at zero, for all $k \in K$. In this paper, we establish a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation result for the subalgebra $H^{\infty}_K(\mathbb{D})$, where $K = \{1,2,\dotsc,k\}$, which is a slight generalization of the interpolation theorem that Davidson, Paulsen, Raghupathi, and Singh proved for the algebra $H^{\infty}_{\{1\}}(\mathbb{D})$. Furthermore, we provide a sufficient condi…

In this paper we obtain a noncommutative multivariable analogue of the classical Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem for analytic functions with positive real parts on the open unit disc. As consequences, we deduce some results concerning operator-valued analytic interpolation on the unit ball on C^n.
Nevanlinna showed that Cauchy transforms of probability measures parametrize all functions from the upper half plane into itself satisfying a certain asymptotic condition at infinity. We show that the correspondence fails in general for the unbounded case for somewhat trivial reasons; however, we show that in a setting of "homomorphic" operator valued free probability that Cauchy transforms of homomorphic conditional expectations parametrize free Pick functions.
We extend the study of the Pick class, the set of complex analytic functions taking the upper half plane into itself, to the noncommutative setting. R. Nevanlinna showed that elements of the Pick class have certain integral representations which reflect their asymptotic behavior at infinity. Loewner connected the Pick class to matrix monotone functions. We generalize the Nevanlinna representation theorems and Loewner's theorem on matrix monotone functions to the free Pick class, the collection of functions that map tuples of matrices with positive imaginary part into the matrices with positive…
Given a domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and a finite set of points $z_1,\ldots, z_n\in Ω$ and $w_1,\ldots, w_n\in \mathbb{D}$ (the open unit disc in the complex plane), the $Pick\, interpolation\, problem$ asks when there is a holomorphic function $f:Ω\rightarrow \overline{\mathbb{D}}$ such that $f(z_i)=w_i,1\leq i\leq n$. Pick gave a condition on the data $\{z_i, w_i:1\leq i\leq n\}$ for such an $interpolant$ to exist if $Ω=\mathbb{D}$. Nevanlinna characterized all possible functions $f$ that $interpolate$ the data. We generalize Nevanlinna's result to an arbitrary set $Ω$. In this case, the fu…
An indefinite generalization of Nudel'man's problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation, the method yealds new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solu…
A seminal result of Agler characterizes the so-called Schur-Agler class of functions on the polydisk in terms of a unitary colligation transfer function representation. We generalize this to the unit ball of the algebra of multipliers for a family of test functions over a broad class of semigroupoids. There is then an associated interpolation theorem. Besides leading to solutions of the familiar Nevanlinna-Pick and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation problems and their multivariable commutative and noncommutative generalizations, this approach also covers more exotic examples.
In this paper we formulate and solve Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory type problems for tensor algebras with data given on the N-dimensional operator unit ball of a Hilbert space. We develop an approach based on the displacement structure theory.
The Lyapunov order appeared in the study of Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation for positive real odd functions with general (real) matrix points. For real or complex matrices $A$ and $B$ it is said that $B$ Lyapunov dominates $A$ if \begin{equation*} H=H^*,\quad HA+A^*H \geq 0 \quad \implies \quad HB+B^*H \geq 0. \end{equation*} (In case $A$ and $B$ are real we usually restrict to real Hermitian matrices $H$, i.e., symmetric $H$.) Hence $B$ Lyapunov dominates $A$ if all Lyapunov solutions of $A$ are also Lyapunov solutions of $B$. In this chapter we restrict to the case that appears in the study of…
We investigate the Pick problem for the polydisk and unit ball using dual algebra techniques. Some factorization results for Bergman spaces are used to describe a Pick theorem for any bounded region in $\mathbb{C}^d$.
We give a solution to Pick's interpolation problem on the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n\geq 2$, by characterizing all interpolation data that admit a $\mathbb{D}$-valued interpolant, in terms of a family of positive-definite kernels parametrized by a class of polynomials. This uses a duality approach that has been associated with Pick interpolation, together with some approximation theory. Furthermore, we use duality methods to understand the set of points on the $n$-torus at which the boundary values of a given solution to an extremal interpolation problem are not unimodular.
An abstract Pick interpolation theorem for a family of positive semi-definite kernels on a set $X$ is formulated. The result complements those in \cite{Ag} and \cite{AMbook} and will subsequently be applied to Pick interpolation on distinguished varieties \cite{JKM}.
