This is the manuscript for Proceedings of International Conference and Workshop on Valuation Theory held at University of Saskachewan, Canada in 1999. I have succeeded in showing that any two-dimensional hypersurface singularities of germs of varieties in any characteristic can be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations with centers in smooth subvarieties. The new proof for the two-dimensional case depends on new ideas. Ideas are essentially different from Abhyankar's one in 1956 and Lipman's one in 1978. It seems to be possible to generalize the new proof into higher dimensional cases, if we add several ideas further. In this article I try to explain my new ideas rather than partial result I explained at the conference.
We find generators for the ideals of secant varieties of Segre varieties in several the cases including the Garcia-Stillmann-Ssturmfels conjecture for four factors and prove results about their singularities.
A criterion is given in order that the ideals of a one branch curve singularity form at most 2-parameter families. Namely, we present a list of plane curve singularities from the Arnold's classification which are the smallest among all one branch singularities having at most 2-parameter families of ideals.
We generalize the notions of F-regular and F-pure rings to pairs $(R,\a^t)$ of rings $R$ and ideals $\a \subset R$ with real exponent $t > 0$, and investigate these properties. These ``F-singularities of pairs'' correspond to singularities of pairs of arbitrary codimension in birational geometry. Via this correspondence, we prove Inversion of Adjunction of arbitrary codimension, which states that for a pair $(X,Y)$ of a smooth variety $X$ and a closed subscheme $Y \subsetneq X$, if the restriction $(Z, Y|_Z)$ to a normal $\Q$-Gorenstein closed subvariety $Z \subsetneq X$ is klt (resp. lc), the…
We introduce a new variant of tight closure and give an interpretation of adjoint ideals via this tight closure. As a corollary, we prove that a log pair $(X,Δ)$ is plt if and only if the modulo $p$ reduction of $(X,Δ)$ is divisorially F-regular for all large $p \gg 0$. Here, divisorially F-regular pairs are a class of singularities in positive characteristic introduced by Hara and Watanabe in terms of Frobenius splitting.
The aim of this paper is to study mixed multiplier ideals associated to a tuple of ideals in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. We are interested in the partition of the real positive orthant given by the regions where the mixed multiplier ideals are constant. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a mixed multiplier ideal determines its corresponding jumping wall and we provide an algorithm to compute all the constancy regions, and their corresponding mixed multiplier ideals, in any desired range.
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
We use the framework of perfectoid big Cohen-Macaulay algebras to define a class of singularities for pairs in mixed characteristic, which we call purely BCM-regular singularities, and a corresponding adjoint ideal. We prove that these satisfy adjunction and inversion of adjunction with respect to the notion of BCM-regularity and the BCM test ideal defined by the first two authors. We compare them with the existing equal characteristic PLT and purely $F$-regular singularities and adjoint ideals. As an application, we obtain a uniform version of the Briançon-Skoda theorem in mixed characteristi…
The aim of this paper is to study jumping numbers and multiplier ideals of any ideal in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. In particular we reveal which information encoded in a multiplier ideal determines the next jumping number. This leads to an algorithm to compute sequentially the jumping numbers and the whole chain of multiplier ideals in any desired range. As a consequence of our method we develop the notion of jumping divisor that allows to describe the jump between two consecutive multiplier ideals. In particular we find a unique minimal jumping divisor that is s…
We study the classification of plane curve singularities in arbitrary characteristic. We first give a bound for the determinacy of a plane curve singularity with respect to pararametrization equivalence in terms of its conductor. Then we classify parametrization simple plane curve singularities which are irreducible by giving a concrete list of normal forms of equations and parametrizations. In characteristic zero, the classification of parametrization simple irreducible plane curve singularities was achieved by Bruce and Gaffney.
The main aim of this paper is to classify Ulrich ideals and Ulrich modules over two-dimensional Gorenstein rational singularities (rational double points) from a geometric point of view. To achieve this purpose, we introduce the notion of (weakly) special Cohen-Macaulay modules with respect to ideals, and study the relationship between those modules and Ulrich modules with respect to good ideals.
This is Part II of the series of our papers under the title "Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic (The Idealistic Filtration Program)". See http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0607009 for Part I.
This paper summarizes the results at the present moment about singularities with respect to the Mather-Jacobian log discrepancies over algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. The basic point is the Inversion of Adjunction with respect to Mather-Jacobian discrepancies holds in arbitrary characteristic. Based on this fact we will reduce many geometric properties of the singularities into the problem on jet schemes and try to avoid discussions which are distinctive for characteristic 0.
Over $\C$, Henry Laufer classified all taut surface singularities. We adapt and extent his transcendental methods to positive characteristic. With this we show that if a normal surface singularity is taut over $\C$, then the normal surface singularities with isomorphic dual graph over algebraically closed fields of characteristic exponent $p>1$ are taut for all but finitely many $p$. We conjecture that this is actually "if and only if".
We present an application of elimination theory to the study of singularities over arbitrary fields, particularly to the open problem of resolution. A partial extension of a function, defining resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero, is discussed here in positive characteristic.
We utilize recent results of André and Gabber on the existence of weakly functorial integral perfectoid big Cohen-Macaulay (BCM) algebras to study singularities of local rings in mixed characteristic. In particular, we introduce a mixed characteristic BCM-variant of rational/$F$-rational singularities, of log terminal/$F$-regular singularities and of multiplier/test ideals of divisor pairs. We prove a number of results about these objects including a restriction theorem for perfectoid BCM multiplier/test ideals and deformation statements for perfectoid BCM-regular and BCM-rational singularitie…
In this paper we consider the problem of finding explicitly canonical ideals of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. We show that Gorenstein ideals contained in a high power of the maximal ideal are canonical ideals. In the codimension two case, from a Hilbert-Burch resolution, we show how to construct canonical ideals of curve singularities. Finally, we translate the problem of the analytic classification of curve singularities to the classification of local Artin Gorenstein rings with suitable length.
The concept of the maximal contact is the key in Hironaka's resolution theory. It treats local theory, and it is not effective in positive characteristics. This is the essential reason why Hironaka's theory treats only the case of characteristic zero. In this article we propose the substitute for the maximal contact, which is effective in any characteristics of the ground field. We replace the maximal contact by a theorem in the theory of torus embeddings. Using essential ideas here, we would like to establish the theory of resolution of singularities in arbitrary characteristics in a global s…
For a normal F-finite variety $X$ and a boundary divisor $Δ$ we give a uniform description of an ideal which in characteristic zero yields the multiplier ideal, and in positive characteristic the test ideal of the pair $(X,Δ)$. Our description is in terms of regular alterations over $X$, and one consequence of it is a common characterization of rational singularities (in characteristic zero) and F-rational singularities (in characteristic $p$) by the surjectivity of the trace map $π_* ω_Y \to ω_X$ for every such alteration $π\: Y \to X$. Furthermore, building on work of B. Bhatt, we establish …
We describe the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of a monomial ideal using reduction mod p and invariants of singularities in positive chracteristic. We give in this setting a positive answer to a problem of Takagi, Watanabe and the second author, concerning the dependence on the characteristic for these invariants of singularities.
We introduce Hodge ideal spectrum for isolated hypersurface singularities to see the difference between the Hodge ideals and the microlocal $V$-filtration modulo the Jacobian ideal. Via the Tjurina subspectrum, we can compare the Hodge ideal spectrum with the Steenbrink spectrum which can be defined by the microlocal $V$-filtration. As a consequence of a formula of Mustata and Popa, these two spectra coincide in the weighted homogeneous case. We prove sufficient conditions for their coincidence and non-coincidence in some non-weighted-homogeneous cases where the defining function is semi-weigh…
In this survey paper we give an overview on some aspects of singularities of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We review in particular results on equisingularity of plane curve singularities, classification of hypersurface singularities and determinacy of arbitrary singularities. The section on equisingularity has its roots in two important early papers by Antonio Campillo. One emphasis is on the differences between positive and zero characteristic and on open problems.
We establish an algorithm for resolution of singularities of an idealistic filtration in dimension 3 (at the local level) in positive characteristic, incorporating the method recently developed by Benito-Villamayor into our framework. Although (a global version of) our algorithm only implies embedded resolution of surfaces in the smooth ambient space of dimension 3, a classical result known before, we introduce some new invariant which effectively measures how much singularities are improved in the process of our algorithm and which strictly drops after each blow up. This is in contrast to the…
Let $X$ be an integral affine or projective scheme of finite presentation over a perfect field. We prove that $X$ admits a resolution, that is, there exists a smooth scheme $\widetilde X$ and a projective birational morphism from $\widetilde X$ onto $X$.
In 1978 Lipman presented a proof of the existence of a desingularization for any excellent surface. The strategy of Lipman's proof is based on the finiteness of the number H(R) defined as the supreme of the second Hilbert-Samuel coefficient I, where I range the set of normal m-primary ideals of a Noetherian complete local ring (R,m). The problem studied in the paper is the extension of the result of Lipman on H(R) to m-primary ideals I of a d-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay ring R such that the associated graded ring of R with respect to I^n is Cohen-Macaulay for n>> 0.
Tight closure test ideals have been central to the classification of singularities in rings of characteristic $p>0$, and via reduction to characteristic $p$, in equal characteristic zero as well. A summary of their properties and applications can be found in "A survey of test ideals" by Karl Schwede and Kevin Tucker. In this paper, we extend the notion of a test ideal to arbitrary closure operations, particularly those coming from big Cohen-Macaulay modules and algebras, and prove that it shares key properties of tight closure test ideals. Our main results show how these test ideals can be use…
A new proof for the embedded resolution of surface singularities in a three-dimensional smooth ambient space over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. The proof makes use of an upper semicontinuous resolution invariant which prescribes the center in each step of the resolution algorithm. The resolution invariant strictly decreases under each blowup. The definition of the resolution invariant is inspired by the proofs of resolution of singularities in arbitrary dimension over fields of characteristic zero. It was developed in an attempt to generalize these proofs to the sett…
Algorithms for resolution of singularities in characteristic zero are based on Hironaka's idea of reducing the problem to a simpler question of desingularization of an "idealistic exponent" (or "marked ideal"). How can we determine whether two marked ideals are equisingular in the sense that they can be resolved by the same blowing-up sequences? We show there is a desingularization functor defined on the category of equivalence classes of marked ideals and smooth morphisms, where marked ideals are "equivalent" if they have the same sequences of "test transformations". Functoriality in this sen…
A mixed quasi-étale quotient is the quotient of the product of a curve of genus at least 2 with itself by the action of a group which exchanges the two factors and acts freely out of a finite subset. A mixed quasi-étale surface is the minimal resolution of its singularities. We produce an algorithm computing all mixed quasi-étale surfaces with given geometric genus, irregularity, and self-intersection of the canonical class. We prove that all irregular mixed quasi-étale surfaces of general type are minimal. As application, we classify all irregular mixed quasi étale surfaces of general type wi…
We introduce the notion of stringy E-function for an arbitrary normal irreducible algebraic variety X with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove some basic properties of stringy E-functions and compute them explicitly for arbitrary Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. Using stringy E-functions, we propose a general method to define stringy Hodge numbers for projective algebraic varieties with at worst Gorenstein canonical singularities. This allows us to formulate the topological mirror duality test for arbitrary Calabi-Yau varieties with canonical singularities. In Appendix we explain non-Ar…
This paper represents the main portion of the Ph.D. Thesis of the author, and is the first of the series of four papers, which is a joint work with K. Matsuki as a whole. We present a program toward constructing an algorithm for resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We would like to emphasize, however, that the program is actually valid in all characteristics. As such, it leads in characteristic zero to a complete algorithm, which is slightly different from the existing ones. In positive characteristic, almost all the ingredients work nicely forming a perfect parallel to the …
We define a version of multiplier ideals, the Mather multiplier ideals, on a variety with arbitrary singularities, using the Mather discrepancy and the Jacobian ideal. In this context we prove a relative vanishing theorem, thus obtaining restriction theorems and a subadditivity and summation theorems. The Mather multiplier ideals also satisfy a Skoda type result. As an application, we obtain a Briancon-Skoda type formula for the integral closures of ideals on a variety with arbitrary singularities.
In this article, we study the jumping numbers of an ideal in the local ring at rational singularity on a complex algebraic surface. By understanding the contributions of reduced divisors on a fixed resolution, we are able to present an algorithm for finding of the jumping numbers of the ideal. This shows, in particular, how to compute the jumping numbers of a plane curve from the numerical data of its minimal resolution. In addition, the jumping numbers of the maximal ideal at the singular point in a Du Val or toric surface singularity are computed, and applications to the smooth case are expl…
The critical loci of a map $f:X\to Y$ between smooth schemes over a field $k$ are the locally closed subschemes $Σ^i(f)\subseteq X$ where the differential of $f$ has constant rank. We prove that if $f : X\to \mathbb A^r$ is the general member of a suitably large linear family of maps from a smooth $k$-scheme $X$ to affine space, then the critical loci $Σ^i(f)$ are smooth, except in characteristic 2 where the first critical locus $Σ^1(f)$ may be singular at a finite set of points. Moreover, we compute the codimensions of the loci of second order singularities of such general maps $f :X \to \mat…
We study the Weierstrass preparation and division theorems over arbitrary test rings and the local structure of singularities in the space of nondegenerate arcs on algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a strengthened version of a theorem of Grinberg-Kazhdan and Drinfeld.
We introduce graded, enriched characteristic cycles as a method for encoding Morse modules of strata with respect to a constructible complex of sheaves. Using this new device, we obtain results for arbitrary complex analytic functions on arbitrarily singular complex analytic spaces.
We provide a complete classification of the singularities of cluster algebras of finite type with trivial coefficients. Alongside, we develop a constructive desingularization of these singularities via blowups in regular centers over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, from the same perspective, we study a family of cluster algebras which are not of finite type and which arise from a star shaped quiver.
We consider Fuchsian singularities of arbitrary genus and prove, in a conceptual manner, a formula for their Poincaré series. This uses Coxeter elements involving Eichler-Siegel transformations. We give geometrical interpretations for the lattices and isometries involved, lifting them to triangulated categories.
Embedded principalization of ideals in smooth schemes, also known as Log-resolutions of ideals, play a central role in algebraic geometry. If two sheaves of ideals, say $I_1$ and $I_2$, over a smooth scheme $V$ have the same integral closure, it is well known that Log-resolution of one of them induces a Log-resolution of the other. On the other hand, in case $V$ is smooth over a field of characteristic zero, an algorithm of desingularization provides, for each sheaf of ideals, a unique Log-resolution. In this paper we show that algorithms of desingularization define the same Log-resolution for…
We compare three naturally occurring multi-indexed filtrations of ideals on the local ring of a Newton nondegenerate hypersurface surface singularity with rational homology sphere, which in many cases are all distinct. These are the divisorial, the order, and the image filtrations. These filtrations are indexed by the lattice associated with a toric partial resolution of the singularity, or equivalently, the free abelian group generated by the compact facets of the Newton polyhedron. We prove that there exists a top dimensional cone contained in the Lipman cone having the property that the thr…

We introduce an upper semi-continuous function that stratifies the highest multiplicity locus of a hypersurface in arbitrary characteristic (over a perfect field). The blow-up along the maximum stratum defined by this function leads to a form of simplification of the singularities, also known as a reduction to the monomial case.
We present new results on equisingularity and equinormalizability of families with isolated non-normal singularities (INNS) of arbitrary dimension. We define a $δ$-invariant and a $μ$-invariant for an INNS and prove necessary and sufficient numerical conditions for equinormalizability and weak equinormalizability using $δ$ and $μ$. Moreover, we determine the number of connected components of the Milnor fibre of an arbitrary INNS. For families of generically reduced curves, we investigate the topological behavior of the Milnor fibre and characterize topological triviality of such families. Fina…
A singularity is said to be weakly-exceptional if it has a unique purely log terminal blow up. This is a natural generalization of the surface singularities of types $D_{n}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$ and $E_{8}$. Since this idea was introduced, quotient singularities of this type have been classified in dimensions up to most $4$. This note extends that classification to dimension $5$.
We show an effective method to compute the Łojasiewicz exponent of an arbitrary sheaf of ideals of $\OO_X$, where $X$ is a non-singular scheme. This method is based on the algorithm of resolution of singularities.
Cecotti and Vafa proposed in 1993 a beautiful idea how to associate spectral numbers $α_1,...,α_n\in{\mathbb R}$ to real upper triangular $n\times n$ matrices $S$ with 1's on the diagonal and eigenvalues of $S^{-1}S^t$ in the unit sphere. Especially, $\exp(-2πiα_j)$ shall be the eigenvalues of $S^{-1}S^t$. We tried to make their idea rigorous, but we succeeded only partially. This paper fixes our results and our conjectures. For certain subfamilies of matrices their idea works marvellously, and there the spectral numbers fit well to natural (split) polarized mixed Hodge structures. We formulat…
