Algorithms for resolution of singularities in characteristic zero are based on Hironaka's idea of reducing the problem to a simpler question of desingularization of an "idealistic exponent" (or "marked ideal"). How can we determine whether two marked ideals are equisingular in the sense that they can be resolved by the same blowing-up sequences? We show there is a desingularization functor defined on the category of equivalence classes of marked ideals and smooth morphisms, where marked ideals are "equivalent" if they have the same sequences of "test transformations". Functoriality in this sense realizes Hironaka's idealistic exponent philosophy. We use it to show that the recent algorithms for desingularization of marked ideals of Wlodarczyk and of Kollar coincide with our own, and we discuss open problems. This article is dedicated to Heisuke Hironaka for his 77th birthday, in celebration of "Kiju" -- joy and long life!
We show an effective method to compute the Łojasiewicz exponent of an arbitrary sheaf of ideals of $\OO_X$, where $X$ is a non-singular scheme. This method is based on the algorithm of resolution of singularities.
We use the framework of perfectoid big Cohen-Macaulay algebras to define a class of singularities for pairs in mixed characteristic, which we call purely BCM-regular singularities, and a corresponding adjoint ideal. We prove that these satisfy adjunction and inversion of adjunction with respect to the notion of BCM-regularity and the BCM test ideal defined by the first two authors. We compare them with the existing equal characteristic PLT and purely $F$-regular singularities and adjoint ideals. As an application, we obtain a uniform version of the Briançon-Skoda theorem in mixed characteristi…
The philosophy of the article is that the desingularization invariant together with natural geometric information can be used to compute local normal forms of singularities. The idea is used in two related problems: (1) We give a proof of resolution of singularities of a variety or a divisor, except for simple normal crossings (i.e., which avoids blowing up simple normal crossings, and ends up with a variety or a divisor having only simple normal crossings singularities). (2) For more general normal crossings (in a local analytic or formal sense), such a result does not hold. We find the small…
We show that a version of the desingularization theorem of Hironaka holds for certain classes of infinitely differentiable functions (essentially, for subrings that exclude flat functions and are closed under differentiation and the solution of implicit equations). Examples are quasianalytic classes, introduced by E. Borel a century ago and characterized by the Denjoy-Carleman theorem. These classes have been poorly understood in dimension > 1. Resolution of singularities can be used to obtain many new results; for example, topological Noetherianity, Lojasiewicz inequalities, division properti…
The main problem studied is resolution of singularities of the cotangent sheaf of a complex- or real-analytic variety Y (or of an algebraic variety Y over a field of characteristic zero). Given Y, we ask whether there is a global resolution of singularities s: X -> Y such that the pulled-back cotangent sheaf of Y is generated by differential monomials in suitable coordinates at every point of X ("Hsiang-Pati coordinates''). Desingularization of the cotangent sheaf is equivalent to monomialization of Fitting ideals generated by minors of a given order of the logarithmic Jacobian matrix of s. We…
Let $M$ be an analytic manifold over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, $θ$ a $1$-dimensional Log-Canonical (resp. monomial) singular distribution and $\mathcal{I}$ a coherent ideal sheaf defined on $M$. We prove the existence of a resolution of singularities for $\mathcal{I}$ that preserves the Log-Canonicity (resp. monomiality) of the singularities of $θ$. Furthermore, we apply this result to provide a resolution of a family of ideal sheaves when the dimension of the parameter space is equal to the dimension of the ambient space minus one.
In this article we prove that the possible geometric genuses $p_g(\tX)$ corresponding to normal surface singularities $\tX$ with fixed negative definite resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$ form an interval of integers. Similarly let us have a resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$ and a fixed normal surface singularity $(X, 0)$ with resolution $\tX$ and resolution graph $\mathcal{T}$, furthermore consider a Chern class $l' \in L'$. We prove that the possible values of $h^1(\tX, \calL)$, where $\calL \in \pic^{l'}(\tX)$ form an interval of integers.
We give some necessary conditions for the existence of a symplectic resolution for quotient singularities. The McKay correspondence is also worked out for these resolutions.
We give canonical resolutions of singularities of several cone varieties arising from invariant theory. We establish a connection between our resolutions and resolutions of singularities of closure of conjugacy classes in classical Lie algebras.
We prove the uniqueness of crepant resolutions for some quotient singularities and for some nilpotent orbits. The finiteness of non-isomorphic symplectic resolutions for 4-dimenensional symplectic singularities is proved. We also give an example of symplectic singularity which admits two non-equivalent symplectic resolutions.
The object of the present is a proof of the existence of functorial resolution of tame quotient singularities for quasi-projective varieties over algebraically closed fields.
This is a survey written in an expositional style on the topic of symplectic singularities and symplectic resolutions, which could also serve as an introduction to this subject.
We will describe a combinatorial game that models the problem of resolution of singularities of algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero. By giving a winning strategy for this game, we give another proof of the existence of resolution.
The dual complex can be associated to any resolution of singularities whose exceptional set is a divisor with simple normal crossings. It generalizes to higher dimensions the notion of the dual graph of a resolution of surface singularity. The homotopy type of the dual complex does not depend on the choice of a resolution and thus can be considered as an invariant of singularity. In this preprint we show that the dual complex is homotopy trivial for resolutions of 3-dimensional terminal singularities and for resolutions of Brieskorn singularities. We also review our earlier results on resoluti…
We give an overview of invariants of algebraic singularities over perfect fields. We then show how they lead to a synthetic proof of embedded resolution of singularities of 2-dimensional schemes.
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety with Gorenstein singularities. We define the notion of a wonderful resolution of singularities of $X$ by analogy with the theory of wonderful compactifications of semi-simple linear algebraic groups. We prove that if $X$ has rational singularities and has a wonderful resolution of singularities, then $X$ admits a categorical crepant resolution of singularities. As an immediate corollary, we get that all determinantal varieties defined by the minors of a generic square/symmetric/skew-symmetric matrix admit categorical crepant resolution of singularities. We also …
The work is a detailed study of rational singularities of multiplicity 3 (RTP-singularities, for short). We give a list of nonisolated hypersurface singularities of which normalisations are the RTP-singularities, and construct their minimal resolution graphs by means of a subdivision of Newton polygons of those -- a method introduced by M. Oka for isolated complete intersection singularities. We show that nonisolated forms of RTP-singularities and their normalisations are both Newton non-degenerate.
In this paper, we show a condition for two-parameter Gorenstein cyclic quotient singularities to have a crepant resolution by using the remainder polynomial in any dimension.
Using the structure of the jet schemes of rational double point singularities, we construct "minimal embedded toric resolutions" of these singularities. We also establish, for these singularities, a correspondence between a natural class of irreducible components of the jet schemes centered at the singular locus and the set of divisors which appear on every "minimal embedded toric resolution". We prove that this correspondence is bijective except for the $E_8$ singulartiy. This can be thought as an embedded Nash correspondence for rational double point singularities.
We study symplectic resolutions of the Hilbert scheme of two points on a surface with one ADE-singularity. We also characterize such singularities by central fibers of their symplectic resolutions. As an application, we show that these singularities are isomorphic to the Slodowy slices which are transversal to the `sub-subregular' orbits in the nilpotent cones of ADE-types.
We show a sufficient condition for Fujiki-Oka resolutions of Gorenstein abelian quotient singularities to be crepant in all dimensions by using Ashikaga's continuous fractions. Moreover, we prove that all three dimensional Gorenstein abelian quotient singularities possess a crepant resolution as a corollary. This alternative proof of existence needs only simple computations comparing with the results ever known.
We compare some algebras appeared in the recent attempts to prove resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We also construct an algebra which encodes the same information and it is equivalent, up to integral closure, to the previous structures. In the case of characteristic zero one may use these structures to obtain a resolution of singularities.
The dual complex associated to a resolution of singularities generalizes the notion of a resolution graph of a surface singularity to any dimension. We show that homotopy type of the dual complex is an invariant of an isolated singularity.
These are the notes for my lecture ``Resolution of Sigularities in Charcteristic 0" given at the AMS Summer Institute at Seattle. It gives a self contained proof of the strong Hironaka resolution theorem.
We study Cox rings of crepant resolutions of quotient singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/G$ where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $SL(3,\mathbb{C})$. We use them to obtain information on the geometric structure of these resolutions, number of different resolutions and relations between them. In particular, we treat explicitly several examples where $G$ contains elements of age 2.
In this article, we study the group of autoequivalences of derived categories of coherent sheaves on the minimal resolution of $A_n$-singularities on surfaces. Our main result is to find generators of this group.
This is a note on toroidalization, formulated as the problem of resolution of singularities of morphisms in the logarithmic category. It is submitted to the proceedings of the Barrett conference held at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in April 2002.
A new proof of equivariant resolution of singularities under a finite group action in characteristic 0 is provided. We assume we know how to resolve singularities without group action. We first prove equivariant resolution of toroidal singularities. Then we reduce the general case to the toroidal case.
We prove that any three dimensional terminal singularity $P \in X$ can be resolved by a sequence of divisorial contractions with minimal discrepancies which are weighted blowups over points.
We construct a local invariant for resolution of singularities of 2-dimensional excellent Noetherian schemes with boundary. We prove that the invariant strictly decreases at every step of the algorithm of Cossart, Jannsen and Saito.
This is Part II of the series of our papers under the title "Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic (The Idealistic Filtration Program)". See http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0607009 for Part I.
We describe combinatorial aspects of classical resolution of singularities that are free of characteristic and can be applied to singular foliations and vector fields as well as to functions and varieties. In particular, we give a combinatorial version of Hironaka's maximal contact theory in terms of characteristic polyhedra systems and we show the global existence of maximal contact in this context.
Determinantal singularities are an important class of singularities, generalizing complete intersections, which recently have seen a large amount of interest. They are defined as preimage of $M^{t}_{m,n}$ the sets of matrices of rank less than $t$. The linear algebraic structure $M^{t}_{m,n}$ gives rise to some interesting structures on determinantal singularities. In this article we will focus on one of these, namely the Tjurina transform. We will show some properties of it, and discuss how it can and how can not be used to find resolutions of determinantal singularities.
We discuss Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities in charactetistic 0 as well as more recent progress, both on simplifying and improving Hironaka's method of proof and on new results and directions on families of varieties, leading to joint work on toroidal orbifolds with Michael Temkin and Jarosław Włodarczyk.
Let $(Z,o)$ be a three-dimensional terminal singularity of type $cA/r$. We prove that all exceptional divisors over $o$ with discrepancies $\le 1$ are rational.
We introduce the notion of a poset scheme and study the categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on such spaces. We then show that smooth poset schemes may be used to obtain categorical resolutions of singularities for usual singular schemes. We prove that a singular variety $X$ possesses such a resolution if and only if $X$ has Du Bois singularities. Finally we show that the de Rham-Du Bois complex for an algebraic variety $Y$ may be defined using any smooth poset scheme which satisfies the descent over $Y$ in the classical topology.
We prove that the tangent developables of the varieties appearing in the third row of the Tits-Freudenthal magic square admit categorical crepant resolutions of singularities.
Regarding the resolution of singularities for the differential equations of Painlevé type, there are important differences between the second-order Painlevé equations and those of higher order. Unlike the second-order case, in higher order cases there may exist some meromorphic solution spaces with codimension 2. In this paper, we will give an explicit global resolution of singularities for a 3-parameter family of third-order differential systems with meromorphic solution spaces of codimension 2.
In this paper we present new proofs using real spectra of the finiteness theorem on Nash trivial simultaneous resolution and the finiteness theorem on Blow-Nash triviality for isolated real algebraic singularities. That is, we prove that a family of Nash sets in a Nash manifold indexed by a semialgebraic set always admits a Nash trivial simultaneous resolution after a partition of the parameter space into finitely many semialgebraic pieces and in the case of isolated singularities it admits a finite Blow-Nash trivialization. We also complement the finiteness results with recursive bounds.
The purpose of this paper is to construct a crepant resolution of quotient singularities by trihedral groups ( finite subgroups of SL(3,C) of certain type ), and prove that each Euler number of the minimal model is equal to the number of conjugacy classes. Trihedral singularities are 3-dimensional version of D_n-singularities, and they are non-isolated and many of them are not complete intersections. The resolution is similar to one of D_n-singularities. There is a nice combination of the toric resolution and Calabi-Yau resolution.
We state a version of the crepant resolution conjecture for total ancestor potentials for surface singularities, and reduce the conjecture to the quantum McKay correspondence conjecture of J.Bryan and A.Gholampour and a vanishing conjecture for Hurwitz-Hodge integrals. In particular, for singularities of type A, we prove the conjecture. We also suggest an approach towards a proof for the general cases by Teleman's reconstruction theorem for semisimple cohomological field theories.
We prove a local theorem on simultaneous resolution of singularities, which is valid in all dimensions. This theorem is proven in dimension 2 (and in all characteristics) by Abhyankar in his book "Ramification theoretic methods in algebraic geometry".
In this article we study the triangulated category of singularities associated with a non-commutative resolution of singularities. In particular, we give a complete description of this category in the case of a curve with nodal singularities, classifying its indecomposable objects and computing its Auslander-Reiten quiver and K-group.
We give a new criterion for when a resolution of a surface of general type with canonical singularities has big cotangent bundle and a new lower bound for the values of $d$ for which there is a surface with big cotangent bundle that is deformation equivalent to a smooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of degree $d$.
For a certain class of varieties X, we derive a formula for the valuation d_{X} on the arc space L(Y) of a smooth ambient space Y, in terms of an embedded resolution of singularities. A simple transformation rule yields a formula for the geometric Poincare series. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of varieties, the arithmetic and the geometric Poincare series coincide. We also study the geometric valuation for plane curves.
In this paper we construct free resolutions of certain class of closed subvarieties of affine space of symmetric matrices (of a given size). Our class covers the symmetric determinantal varieties (i.e., determinantal varieties in the space of symmetric matrices), whose resolutions were first constructed by Józefiak-Pragacz-Weyman. Our approach follows the techniques developed in Free Resolutions of Some Schubert Singularities by Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri, and uses the geometry of Schubert varieties.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that the centre of a homologically homogeneous, finitely generated k-algebra has rational singularities. In particular if a finitely generated normal commutative k-algebra has a noncommutative crepant resolution, as introduced by the second author, then it has rational singularities.
Building on the concept of a smooth DG algebra we define the notion of a smooth derived category. We the propose the definition of a categorical resolution of singularities. Our main example is the derived category $D(X)$ of quasi-coherent sheaves on a scheme $X$. We prove that $D(X)$ has a canonical categorical resolution if the base field is perfect and $X$ is a separated scheme of finite type with a dualizing complex.
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
We show that the derived category of any singularity over a field of characteristic 0 can be embedded fully and faithfully into a smooth triangulated category which has a semiorthogonal decomposition with components equivalent to derived categories of smooth varieties. This provides a categorical resolution of the singularity.
We investigate Cox rings of minimal resolutions of surface quotient singularities and provide two descriptions of these rings. The first one is the equation for the spectrum of a Cox ring, which is a hypersurface in an affine space. The second is the set of generators of the Cox ring viewed as a subring of the coordinate ring of a product of a torus and another surface quotient singularity. In addition, we obtain an explicit description of the minimal resolution as a divisor in a toric variety.
