In this note we present some results concerning the concentration of sequences of first eigenfunctions on the limit sets of a Morse-Smale dynamical system on a compact Riemanniann manifold. More precisely a renormalized sequence of eigenfunctions converges to a measure $μ$ concentrated on the hyperbolic sets of the field. The set of all possible measure turns out to be a sum of a finite Dirac distributions localized at the critical point of the field and absolutely continuous measure with respect to the Lebesgue measure on each limit cycles : the coefficients which appear in the limit measure can be characterized using the concentration theory. In the second part, certain aspects of some first order PDE on manifolds are studied. We study the limit of a sequence solutions of a second order PDE, when a parameter of viscosity tends to zero. Under some explicit assumptions on some vector fields, bounded and differentiable solutions are obtained. We exibit the role played by the limit sets of the dynamical systems and provide in some cases an explicit representation formula.
In this paper we give an explicit representation of the solutions of a characteristic Cauchy problem for a class of PDEs with singular coefficients. We give the explicit solutions in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, which enable us to study the singularities and the analytic continuation. Our results are illustrated through some examples.
We propose a new type SDE depending on the future distributions with all initial values, and establish the correspondence between this equation and the associated singular nonlinear PDE. Well-posedness and regularities are investigated.
Optimal control of the singular nonlinear parabolic PDE which is a distributional formulation of multidimensional and multiphase Stefan-type free boundary problem is analyzed. Approximating sequence of finite-dimensional optimal control problems is introduced via finite differences. Existence of the optimal control and the convergence of the sequence of discrete optimal control problems both with respect to functional and control is proved. In particular, convergence of the method of finite differences, and existence, uniqueness and stability estimations are established for the singular PDE pr…
Stochastic PDEs are ubiquitous in mathematical modeling. Yet, many such equations are too singular to admit classical treatment. In this article we review some recent progress in defining, approximating and studying the properties of a few examples of such equations. We focus mainly on the dynamical Phi4 equation, KPZ equation and Parabolic Anderson Model, as well as touch on a few other equations which arise mainly in physics.
We consider a parabolic-type PDE with a diffusion given by a fractional Laplacian operator and with a quadratic nonlinearity of the 'gradient' of the solution, convoluted with a singular term b. Our first result is the well-posedness for this problem: We show existence and uniqueness of a (local in time) mild solution. The main result is about blow-up of said solution, and in particular we find sufficient conditions on the initial datum and on the term b to ensure blow-up of the solution in finite time.
In this paper we consider equations $-| \nabla u |^αF ( D^2 u) = |u|^{p-1} u $ in an annulus. $F$ is Fully Nonlinear Elliptic, $α$ is some real $> -1$ and $p > 1+ α$. The solutions are intended in the sense of the definition given by Birindelli and Demengel \cite{BD1}. We prove the existence of non trivial positive/negative radial solutions.
We consider parabolic equations on bounded smooth open sets $\Om\subset \R^N$ ($N\ge 1$) with mixed Dirichlet type boundary-exterior conditions associated with the elliptic operator $\mathscr{L} \coloneqq - Δ+ (-Δ)^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). Firstly, we prove several well-posedness and regularity results of the associated elliptic and parabolic problems with smooth, and then with singular boundary-exterior data. Secondly, we show the existence of optimal solutions of associated optimal control problems, and we characterize the optimality conditions. This is the first time that such topics have been prese…
Singular limits of a class of evolutionary systems of partial differential equations having two small parameters and hence three time scales are considered. Under appropriate conditions solutions are shown to exist and remain uniformly bounded for a fixed time as the two parameters tend to zero at different rates. A simple example shows the necessity of those conditions in order for uniform bounds to hold. Under further conditions the solutions of the original system tend to solutions of a limit equation as the parameters tend to zero.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of the initial-boundary value problem of a singular PDE-ODE hybrid chemotaxis system in the half space $\R_+=[0, \infty)$. We show that when the non-zero flux boundary condition at $x=0$ is prescribed and the initial data are suitably chosen, the solution of the initial-boundary value problem converges, as time tend to infinity, to a shifted traveling wavefront restricted in the half space $[0,\infty)$ where the wave profile and speed are uniquely selected by the boundary flux data. The results are proved by a Cole-Hopf type transformation …
We investigate nodal radial solutions to semilinear problems of type \[\begin{cases}-Δu = f(|x|,u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, \newline u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$) and $f$ is a real function. We characterize both the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem, which is studied in full detail. The presented approach also describes the symmetries of the eigenfunctions. This characterization enables to give a lower bound for the Morse index in a forthcoming work…
We consider a family of holomorphic PDEs whose singular locus is given by the zero set of an analytic map $P$ with $P(0)=0$. Our goal is to establish conditions for the existence and uniqueness of formal power series solutions and to determine their divergence rate. In fact, we prove that the solution is Gevrey in $P$, giving new information on divergency while compared to the classical Gevrey classes. If $P$ is not singular at $0$, we also provide Poincaré conditions to recover convergent solutions. Our strategy is to extend the dimension and lift the given PDE to a problem where results of s…
This paper is concerned with the well-posedness and large-time behavior of a two dimensional PDE-ODE hybrid chemotaxis system describing the initiation of tumor angiogenesis. We first transform the system via a Cole-Hopf type transformation into a parabolic-hyperbolic system and show that the solution of the transformed system converges to a constant equilibrium state as time tends to infinity. Finally we reverse the Cole-Hopf transformation and obtain the relevant results for the pre-transformed PDE-ODE hybrid system. In contrast to the existing related results, where continuous initial datum…
We prove the existence of infinitely many nonnegative solutions to the following nonlocal elliptic partial differential equation involving singularities \begin{align} (-Δ)_{p(\cdot)}^{s} u&=\fracλ{|u|^{γ(x)-1}u}+f(x,u)~\text{in}~Ω,\nonumber u&=0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ,\nonumber \end{align} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N,\, N\geq2$ is a smooth, bounded domain, $λ>0$, $s\in (0,1)$, $γ(x)\in(0,1)$ for all $x\in\barΩ$, $N>sp(x,y)$ for all $(x,y)\in\barΩ\times\barΩ$ and $(-Δ)_{p(\cdot)}^{s}$ is the fractional $p(\cdot)$-Laplacian operator with variable exponent. The nonlinear function $f$ sa…
By using a characterization of the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem given in a previous paper, we give a lower bound for the Morse index of radial solutions to Hénon type problems \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^αf(u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$), $α>0$ and $f$ is a real function. From this estimate we get that the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to this problem goes to $\infty$ as $α\to \infty$. Concer…
We use some tools from nonlinear analysis to study two examples of singular stochastic elliptic PDEs that cannot be solved by the contraction principle or the Schauder fixed point theorem. Let $ξ$ stand for a spatial white noise on a closed Riemannian surface $S$. We prove the existence of a solution to the equation $$ (-Δ+ a)u = f(u) + ξu $$ with a potential $a\in L^p(S)$ and $p>1$, and $f$ subject to growth conditions. Under an additional parity condition on $f$ -- met for instance when $f(u) = u\vert u\vert^\ell$, with $\ell$ an even innteger, we further prove that this equation has infinit…

We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE. Alternatively, the proof of the scaling limit can be understood as a convergence proof of a finite-difference discretization for singular-degenerate stochastic PDEs. This extends recent work on finite difference approximation of (deterministic)…
In this article, we prove that for a broad class of second order elliptic PDEs, including the Laplacian, the zero sets of solutions to the Dirichlet problem are smooth for "generic" $L^2$ data. When the zero set of a solution (e.g. a harmonic function) contains a singularity, this means that we can find an arbitrarily small perturbation of the boundary data so that the zero set of the perturbed solution is smooth throughout a prescribed neighborhood of the former singularity. Furthermore, we can take the perturbation to be "mean zero" for which there are additional technical difficulties to en…
We study the continuous version of a hyperbolic rescaling of a discrete game, called open mancala. The resulting PDE turns out to be a singular transport equation, with a forcing term taking values in $\{0,1\}$, and discontinuous in the solution itself. We prove existence and uniqueness of a certain formulation of the problem, based on a nonlocal equation satisfied by the free boundary dividing the region where the forcing is one (active region) and the region where there is no forcing (tail region). Several examples, most notably the Riemann problem, are provided, related to singularity forma…
