Exact analytic expression is derived for the matrix elements of the Coulomb interaction in two dimensions in the form of a closed finite sum expression. The orthonormal complete set of eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator is used as the basis for spanning real space. Several recurrence relations have been found in order to simplify the task of calculating the usually vast amount of elements required for any computer simulation.
The two-body Coulomb Hamiltonian, when calculated in Coulomb-Sturmian basis, has an infinite symmetric tridiagonal form, also known as Jacobi matrix form. This Jacobi matrix structure involves a continued fraction representation for the inverse of the Green's matrix. The continued fraction can be transformed to a ratio of two $_{2}F_{1}$ hypergeometric functions. From this result we find an exact analytic formula for the matrix elements of the Green's operator of the Coulomb Hamiltonian.
Using a complete basis set we have obtained an analytic expression for the matrix elements of the Coulomb interaction. These matrix elements are written in a closed form. We have used the basis set of the three-dimensional isotropic quantum armonic oscillator in order to develop our calculations, which can be useful when treating interactions in localized systems.
With the aid of a modified similarity transformation we obtained exact energy eigenvalues of the generalized Dirac-Coulomb equation. This equation consists of the time component of the Lorentz 4-vector potential V_v(r)=-A_1/r, and a Lorentz scalar potential V_s(r)=-A_2/r. The transformed radial equations are so simple that their solutions are inferred from the conventional solutions of the Schrodinger equation.
We study the effect of spatially dependent mass functions over the solution of the Klein-Gordon equation in the (3+1)-dimensions for spinless bosonic particles where the mixed scalar-vector Coulomb-like field potentials and masses are directly proportional and inversely proportional to the distance from force center. The exact bound state energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions of the Klein-Gordon equation for mixed scalar-vector and pure scalar Coulomb-like field potentials are obtained by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method. The energy spectrum is discussed for differen…
The paper derives the representation of the two-particle T-matrix scattering elements for the Coulomb interaction with respect to special bases without expansion in terms of partial waves. The results obtained are applicable to small-particle systems. The advantage of this expansion also arises in three-body problems when solving the Faddeev equation for three-particle systems. The main problem in solving the Faddeev equation is the approximate choice of approximation for the interaction potentials, at which the T-matrix scattering elements acquire a separable form. However, even in this case …
The one dimensional one component plasma has applications to one dimensional particle systems with logarithmic interactions such as charges in a single channel wire or vortex filaments in a fluid convection stream. The exact integral of this plasma in the canonical ensemble with a gaussian confining potential has already been computed. In this paper, I compute the exact volume of the phase space of the plasma of N particles at fixed energy without a confining potential using a microcanonical ensemble and show that, as in the two-dimensional case, it has negative temperature states, suggesting …
The potential group method is applied to the n-dimensional Coulomb-Rosochatius potential, whose bound states and scattering states are worked out in detail. As far as scattering is concerned, the S-matrix elements are computed by the method of intertwining operators and an integral representation is obtained for the scattering amplitude. It is shown that the maximal superintegrability of the system is due to the underlying potential group and that the 2n-1 constants of motion are related to Casimir operators of subgroups.
We analytically evaluate the generating integral $K_{nl}(β,β') = \int_{0}^{\infty}\int_{0}^{\infty} e^{-βr - β' r'}G_{nl} r^{q} r'^{q'} dr dr'$ and integral moments $J_{nl}(β, r) = \int_{0}^{\infty} dr' G_{nl}(r,r') r'^{q} e^{-βr'}$ for the reduced Coulomb Green's function $G_{nl}(r,r')$ for all values of the parameters $q$ and $q'$, when the integrals are convergent. These results can be used in second-order perturbation theory to analytically obtain the complete energy spectra and local physical characteristics such as electronic densities of multi-electron atoms or ions.
We show that the diagonal matrix elements $< Or^{p} >,$ where $O$ $={1,β,i\mathbf{αn}β}$ are the standard Dirac matrix operators and the angular brackets denote the quantum-mechanical average for the relativistic Coulomb problem, may be considered as difference analogs of the radial wave functions. Such structure provides an independent way of obtaining closed forms of these matrix elements by elementary methods of the theory of difference equations without explicit evaluation of the integrals. Three-term recurrence relations for each of these expectation values are derived as a by-product. Tr…
The Dirac equation for an electron in two spatial dimensions in the Coulomb and homogeneous magnetic fields is a physical example of quasi-exactly solvable systems. This model, however, does not belong to the classes based on the algebra $sl(2)$ which underlies most one-dimensional and effectively one-dimensional quasi-exactly solvable systems. In this paper we demonstrate that the quasi-exactly solvable differential equation possesses a hidden $osp(2,2)$ superalgebra.
We extend the class of QM problems which permit for quasi-exact solutions. Specifically, we consider planar motion of two interacting charges in a constant uniform magnetic field. While Turbiner and Escobar-Ruiz (2013) addressed the case of the Coulomb interaction between the particles, we explore three other potentials. We do this by reducing the appropriate Hamiltonians to the second-order polynomials in the generators of the representation of $SL(2,C)$ group in the differential form. This allows us to perform partial diagonalisation of the Hamiltonian, and to reduce the search for the first…
We obtain the exact expression for the matrix of nonadiabatic transition probabilities in the model of three interacting states with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Unlike other known solvable Landau-Zener-like problems, our solution is generally expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions that have relatively complex behavior, e.g. the obtained transition probabilities may show multiple oscillations as functions of parameters of the model Hamiltonian.
The spatially-dependent mass Dirac equation is solved exactly for attractive scalar and repulsive vector Coulomb potentials including a tensor interaction potential under the spin and pseudospin (p-spin) symmetric limits by using the Laplace transformation method (LTM). Closed forms of the energy eigenvalue equation and wave functions are obtained for arbitrary spin-orbit quantum number Some numerical results are given too. The effect of the tensor interaction on the bound states is presented. It is shown that the tensor interaction removes the degeneracy between two states in the spin doublet…
We solve exactly the classical non-relativistic Landau-Lifshitz equations of motion for a charged particle moving in a Coulomb potential, including radiation damping. The general solution involves the Painleve transcendent of type II. It confirms our physical intuition that a negatively charged classical particle will spiral into the nucleus, supporting the the validity of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.
We investigate consequences of space non-commutativity in quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom. We introduce rotationally invariant noncommutative space $\hat{\bf R}^3_0$ - an analog of the hydrogen atom ($H$-atom) configuration space ${\bf R}^3_0\,=\, {\bf R}^3\setminus \{0\}$. The space $\hat{\bf R}^3_0$ is generated by noncommutative coordinates realized as operators in an auxiliary (Fock) space ${\cal F}$. We introduce the Hilbert space $\hat{\cal{H}}$ of wave functions $\hatψ$ formed by properly weighted Hilbert-Schmidt operators in ${\cal F}$. Finally, we define an analog of the $H$-at…
We introduce the Dunkl--Klein--Gordon (DKG) equation in 2D by changing the standard partial derivatives by the Dunkl derivatives in the standard Klein--Gordon (KG) equation. We show that the generalization with Dunkl derivative of the $z$-component of the angular momentum is what allows the separation of variables of the DKG equation. Then, we compute the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions of the DKG equations for the 2D Coulomb potential and the Klein--Gordon oscillator analytically and from an ${\rm su}(1,1)$ algebraic point of view. Finally, we show that if the parameters of the Dunkl deriv…
We derive an exact solution of an explicitly time-dependent multichannel model of quantum mechanical nonadiabatic transitions. Our model corresponds to the case of a single linear diabatic energy level interacting with a band of an arbitrary N states, for which the diabatic energies decay with time according to the Coulomb law. We show that the time-dependent Schroedingier equation for this system can be solved in terms of Meijer functions whose asymptotics at a large time can be compactly written in terms of elementary functions that depend on the roots of an Nth order characteristic polynomi…
We consider a one-dimensional classical Coulomb gas of $N$ like-charges in a harmonic potential -- also known as the one-dimensional one-component plasma (1dOCP). We compute analytically the probability distribution of the position $x_{\max}$ of the rightmost charge in the limit of large $N$. We show that the typical fluctuations of $x_{\max}$ around its mean are described by a non-trivial scaling function, with asymmetric tails. This distribution is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution of $x_{\max}$ for the Dyson's log-gas. We also compute the large deviation functions of $x_{\max}$ ex…
We obtain exact solution of the Dirac equation for a charged particle with position-dependent mass in the Coulomb field. The effective mass of the spinor has a relativistic component which is proportional to the square of the Compton wavelength and varies as 1/r. It is suggested that this model could be used as a tool in the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in field theory. The discrete energy spectrum and spinor wave-function are obtained explicitly.
The Dirac equation for an electron in two spatial dimensions in the Coulomb and homogeneous magnetic fields is discussed. For weak magnetic fields, the approximate energy values are obtained by semiclassical method. In the case with strong magnetic fields, we present the exact recursion relations that determine the coefficients of the series expansion of wave functions, the possible energies and the magnetic fields. It is found that analytic solutions are possible for a denumerably infinite set of magnetic field strengths. This system thus furnishes an example of the so-called quasi-exactly so…
The aim of this paper is to find out how would possible space non-commutativity (NC) alter the QM solution of the Coulomb problem. The NC parameter lambda is to be regarded as a measure of the non-commutativity - setting lambda = 0 means a return to the standard quantum mechanics. As the very first step a rotationaly invariant non-commutative 3D space, an analog of the Coulomb problem configuration space (3D space with origin extracted), is introduced. The non-commutative space in question is generated by NC coordinates realized as operators acting in an auxiliary Fock space. The properly weig…
In their recent paper (Inter. J. Mod. Phys. A 26 (2011) 1011), Zarrinkamar and coauthors have considered the radial Dirac equation for a Coulomb scalar, vector and tensor interaction. The exact solutions for the energy eigenvalues they have reported for spin-symmetry and pseudo-spin symmetry were mishandled and are incorrect eigenvalues, therefore.
In this paper we quantize the $N$-dimensional classical Hamiltonian system $H= \frac{|q|}{2(η+ |q|)} p^2-\frac{k}{η+|q|}$, that can be regarded as a deformation of the Coulomb problem with coupling constant $k$, that it is smoothly recovered in the limit $η\to 0$. Moreover, the kinetic energy term in $H$ is just the one corresponding to an $N$-dimensional Taub-NUT space, a fact that makes this system relevant from a geometric viewpoint. Since the Hamiltonian $H$ is known to be maximally superintegrable, we propose a quantization prescription that preserves such superintegrability in the quantu…
A novel exactly solvable Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent mass (PDM) describing a Coulomb problem in $D$ dimensions is obtained by extending the known duality relating the quantum $d$-dimensional oscillator and $D$-dimensional Coulomb problems in Euclidean spaces for $D = (d+2)/2$. As an intermediate step, a mapping between a quantum $d$-dimensional nonlinear oscillator of Mathews-Lakshmanan type (or oscillator in a space of constant curvature) and a quantum $D$-dimensional Coulomb-like problem in a space of nonconstant curvature is derived. It is finally reinterpreted in a PDM b…
In this paper we establish a relation between two exactly-solvable problems on one-dimensional hyperbolics space, namely singular Coulomb and singular oscillator systems.
We present two maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian systems ${\cal H}_λ$ and ${\cal H}_η$ that are defined, respectively, on an $N$-dimensional spherically symmetric generalization of the Darboux surface of type III and on an $N$-dimensional Taub-NUT space. Afterwards, we show that the quantization of ${\cal H}_λ$ and ${\cal H}_η$ leads, respectively, to exactly solvable deformations (with parameters $λ$ and $η$) of the two basic quantum mechanical systems: the harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb problem. In both cases the quantization is performed in such a way that the maximal superintegrab…
Three-Dimensional Coulomb Discrete Spectrum via Symplectic Geometry and Phase-Space Constraints: A Geometric Framework for Condensed-Matter Coulomb-Like Systems
We consider the jellium model of $N$ particles on a line confined in an external harmonic potential and with a pairwise one-dimensional Coulomb repulsion of strength $α> 0$. Using a Coulomb gas method, we study the statistics of $s = (1/N) \sum_{i=1}^N f(x_i)$ where $f(x)$, in principle, is an arbitrary smooth function. While the mean of $s$ is easy to compute, the variance is nontrivial due to the long-range Coulomb interactions. In this paper we demonstrate that the fluctuations around this mean are Gaussian with a variance ${\rm Var}(s) \approx b/N^3$ for large $N$. We provide an exact comp…
