We solve exactly the classical non-relativistic Landau-Lifshitz equations of motion for a charged particle moving in a Coulomb potential, including radiation damping. The general solution involves the Painleve transcendent of type II. It confirms our physical intuition that a negatively charged classical particle will spiral into the nucleus, supporting the the validity of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.
The Landau-Lifshitz equation is considered as an approximation of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation. It is derived from the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation by treating radiation reaction terms as a perturbation. However, while the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation has pathological solutions of pre-acceleration and runaway, the Landau-Lifshitz equation and its finite higher order extensions are free of these problems. So it seems mysterious that the property of solutions of these two equations is so different. In this paper we show that the problems of pre-acceleration and runaway appear when one …
By interchanging the roles of the space and time coordinates, we describe a dual construction of the isotropic Landau-Lifshitz model, providing equal-space Poisson brackets and dual Hamiltonians conserved with respect to space-evolution. This construction is built in the Lax/zero-curvature formalism, where the duality between the space and time dependencies is evident.
We propose a construction of 1+1 integrable Heisenberg-Landau-Lifshitz type equations in the ${\rm gl}_N$ case. The dynamical variables are matrix elements of $N\times N$ matrix $S$ with the property $S^2={\rm const}\cdot S$. The Lax pair with spectral parameter is constructed by means of a quantum $R$-matrix satisfying the associative Yang-Baxter equation. Equations of motion for ${\rm gl}_N$ Landau-Lifshitz model are derived from the Zakharov-Shabat equations. The model is simplified when ${\rm rank}(S)=1$. In this case the Hamiltonian description is suggested. The described family of models…
We study the classical generalized gl(n) Landau-Lifshitz (L-L) model with special boundary conditions that preserve integrability. We explicitly derive the first non-trivial local integral of motion, which corresponds to the boundary Hamiltonian for the sl(2) L-L model. Novel expressions of the modified Lax pairs associated to the integrals of motion are also extracted. The relevant equations of motion with the corresponding boundary conditions are determined. Dynamical integrable boundary conditions are also examined within this spirit. Then the generalized isotropic and anisotropic gl(n) Lan…
We propose classical equations of motion for a charged particle with magnetic moment, taking radiation reaction into account. This generalizes the Landau-Lifshitz equations for the spinless case. In the special case of spin-polarized motion in a constant magnetic field (synchrotron motion) we verify that the particle does lose energy. Previous proposals did not predict dissipation of energy and also suffered from runaway solutions analogous to those of the Lorentz-Dirac equations of motion.
We give detailed description for continuous version of the classical IRF-Vertex relation, where on the IRF side we deal with the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models. Our study is based on constructing modifications of the Higgs bundles of infinite rank over elliptic curve and its degenerations. In this way the previously predicted gauge equivalence between L-A pairs of the Landau-Lifshitz type equations and 1+1 field theory generalization of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models is described. In this paper the ${\rm sl}_2$ case is studied. Explicit changes of variables are obtained between the rat…
We solve the operator ordering problem for the quantum continuous integrable su(1,1) Landau-Lifshitz model, and give a prescription to obtain the quantum trace identities, and the spectrum for the higher-order local charges. We also show that this method, based on operator regularization and renormalization, which guarantees quantum integrability, as well as the construction of self-adjoint extensions, can be used as an alternative to the discretization procedure, and unlike the latter, is based only on integrable representations.
We are interested in the motion of a classical charge acted upon an external constant electromagnetic field where the back reaction of the particle's own field is taken into account. The Landau-Lifshitz approximation to the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equation is solved exactly and in closed form. It is shown that the ultrarelativistic limit of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for a radiating charge is the equation for eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the external electromagnetic field tensor.
We consider bosonic subsectors of the q-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action and study the classical integrable structure of anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz sigma models (LLSMs) derived by taking fast-moving limits. The subsectors are 1) deformed AdS_3 x S^1 and 2) R x deformed S^3. The cases 1) and 2) lead to a time-like warped SL(2) LLSM and a squashed S^3 LLSM, respectively. For each of them, we construct an infinite number of non-local conserved charges and show a quantum affine algebra at the classical level. Furthermore, a pp-wave like limit is applied for the case 1). The resulting syste…
We introduce a new approach to understand magnetization dynamics in ferromagnets based on the holographic realization of ferromagnets. A Landau-Lifshitz equation describing the magnetization dynamics is derived from a Yang-Mills equation in the dual gravitational theory, and temperature dependences of the spin-wave stiffness and spin transfer torque appearing in the holographic Landau-Lifshitz equation are investigated by the holographic approach. The results are consistent with the known properties of magnetization dynamics in ferromagnets with conduction electrons.
We present thermodynamics of the quantum su(1,1) Landau-Lifshitz model, following our earlier exposition [J. Math. Phys. 50, 103518 (2009)] of the quantum integrability of the theory, which is based on construction of self-adjoint extensions, leading to a regularized quantum Hamiltonian for an arbitrary n-particle sector. Starting from general discontinuity properties of the functions used to construct the self-adjoint extensions, we derive the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations. We show that due to non-symmetric and singular kernel, the self-consistency implies that only negative chemical p…
This paper uses elementary techniques drawn from renormalization theory to derive the Lorentz-Dirac equation for the relativistic classical electron from the Maxwell-Lorentz equations for a classical charged particle coupled to the electromagnetic field. I show that the resulting effective theory, valid for electron motions that change over distances large compared to the classical electron radius, reduces naturally to the Landau-Lifshitz equation. No familiarity with renormalization or quantum field theory is assumed.
We perturbatively study form factors in the Landau-Lifshitz model and the generalisation originating in the study of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills dilatation generator. In particular we study diagonal form factors which have previously been related to gauge theory structure constants. For the Landau-Lifshitz model, due to the non-relativistic nature of the theory, we are able to compute all orders in perturbation theory and to resum the series to find quantum form factors for low numbers of external particles. We apply our form factors to the study of deformations of the integrable theory by means …
In this article we construct the effective field theory associated to the $\mathbb{R}\times S^3$ sector of the three-parameter deformation of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ in the Landau-Lifshitz approximation. We use this action to compute the dispersion relation of excitations around the BMN vacuum and the perturbative $S$-matrix associated to them. We are able to compute and sum all the different loop contributions to the $S$-matrix in this limit.
Vortex rings are ubiquitous in fluids, with smoke rings being a familiar example. The interaction of multiple vortex rings produces complex dynamical behaviour, such as the leapfrogging motion first analysed by Helmholtz more than a century and a half ago. Here we report on numerical investigations of vortex ring dynamics in a different setting from fluids, namely, as solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation that models the evolution of the local magnetization in a ferromagnetic medium. We present the results of the first study on the dynamics of interacting magnetic vortex rings and provide …
