We continue our investigation of the nonlinear SUSY for complex potentials started in the Part I (math-ph/0610024) and prove the theorems characterizing its structure in the case of non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians. This part provides the mathematical basis of previous studies. The classes of potentials invariant under SUSY transformations for non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians are specified and the asymptotics of formal eigenfunctions and associated functions are derived. Several results on the normalizability of associated functions at infinities are rigorously proved. Finally the Index Theorem on relation between Jordan structures of intertwined Hamiltonians depending of the behavior of elements of canonical basis of supercharge kernel at infinity is proven.
We study complex potentials and related non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians with special emphasis on formal definitions of associated functions and Jordan cells. The nonlinear SUSY for complex potentials is considered and the theorems characterizing its structure are presented. We present the class of potentials invariant under SUSY transformations for non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians and formulate several results concerning the properties of associated functions . We comment on the applicability of these results for softly non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. The role of SUSY (Darboux) transfo…
We consider QM with non-Hermitian quasi-diagonalizable Hamiltonians, i.e. the Hamiltonians having a number of Jordan cells in particular biorthogonal bases. The "self-orthogonality" phenomenon is clarified in terms of a correct spectral decomposition and it is shown that "self-orthogonal" states never jeopardize resolution of identity and thereby quantum averages of observables. The example of a complex potential leading to one Jordan cell in the Hamiltonian is constructed and its origin from level coalescence is elucidated. Some puzzles with zero-binorm bound states in continuous spectrum are…
A general strategy is provided to identify the most general metric for diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian and anti-pseudo-Hermitian Hamilton operators represented by two-dimensional matrices. It is investigated how a permutation of the eigen-values of the Hamilton operator in the process of its diagonalization influences the metric and how this permutation equivalence affects energy eigen-values. We try to understand on one hand, how the metric depends on the normalization of the chosen left and right eigen-basis of the matrix representing the diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian or anti-pseudo-Hermit…
We prove that in finite dimensions, a Parity-Time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonian is necessarily pseudo-Hermitian regardless of whether it is diagonalizable or not. This result is different from Mostafazadeh's, which requires the Hamiltonian to be diagonalizable. PT-symmetry breaking often occurs at exceptional points where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable. Our result implies that PT-symmetry breaking is equivalent to the onset of instabilities of pseudo-Hermitian systems, which was systematically studied by Krein et al. in 1950s. In particular, we show that the mechanism of PT-symmetry breaki…
We examine the properties and consequences of pseudo-supersymmetry for quantum systems admitting a pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We explore the Witten index of pseudo-supersymmetry and show that every pair of diagonalizable (not necessarily Hermitian) Hamiltonians with discrete spectra and real or complex-conjugate pairs of eigenvalues are isospectral and have identical degeneracy structure except perhaps for the zero eigenvalue if and only if they are pseudo-supersymmetric partners. This implies that pseudo-supersymmetry is the basic framework for generating non-Hermitian PT-symmetric and non…
A generalized non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonian is proposed that consists of additional linear terms which break PT-symmetry explicitly. The model is put into an equivalent Hermitian form by means of a similarity transformation and the criterion of N-fold supersymmetry with a position-dependent mass is shown to reside in it.
A set of r non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonians in r dimensions is shown to be simultaneously diagonalizable. Their spectra is real and the common eigenstates are expressed in terms of multiple Charlier polynomials. An algebraic interpretation of these polynomials is thus achieved and the model is used to derive some of their properties.
We show that the metric operator for a pseudo-supersymmetric Hamiltonian that has at least one negative real eigenvalue is necessarily indefinite. We introduce pseudo-Hermitian fermion (phermion) and abnormal phermion algebras and provide a pair of basic realizations of the algebra of N=2 pseudo-supersymmetric quantum mechanics in which pseudo-supersymmetry is identified with either a boson-phermion or a boson-abnormal-phermion exchange symmetry. We further establish the physical equivalence (non-equivalence) of phermions (abnormal phermions) with ordinary fermions, describe the underlying Lie…
Diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real and discrete spectra, which are superpartners of Hermitian Hamiltonians, must be $η$-pseudo-Hermitian with Hermitian, positive-definite and non-singular $η$ operators. We show that despite the fact that an $η$ operator produced by a supersymmetric transformation, corresponding to the exact supersymmetry, is singular, it can be used to find the eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator equivalent to the given pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Once the eigenfunctions of the Hermitian operator are found the operator may be reconstructed with the hel…
We present a set of necessary conditions for the existence of a biorthonormal basis composed of eigenvectors of non-Hermitian operators. As an illustration, we examine these conditions in the case of normal operators. We also provide a generalization of the conditions which is applicable to non-diagonalizable operators by considering not only eigenvectors but also all root vectors.
The Dirac Hamiltonian in the (2+1) dimensional curved space-time has been studied with a metric for an expanding de Sitter space-time which is a two sphere. The spectrum and the exact solutions of the time dependent non-Hermitian and angle dependent Hamiltonians are obtained in terms of the Jacobi and Romanovski polynomials. Hermitian equivalent of the Hamiltonian obtained from the Dirac equation is discussed in the frame of pseudo-Hermiticity. Furthermore, pseudo-supersymmetric quantum mechanical techniques are expanded to a curved Dirac Hamiltonian and a partner curved Dirac Hamiltonian is g…
We have obtained the metric operator $Θ=\exp T$ for the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model $H=ω(a^†a+1/2)+α(a^{2}-a^{†^{2}})$. We have also found the intertwining operator which connects the Hamiltonian to the adjoint of its pseudo-supersymmetric partner Hamiltonian for the model of hyperbolic Rosen-Morse II potential.
We study certain linear and antilinear symmetry generators and involution operators associated with pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians and show that the theory of pseudo-Hermitian operators provides a simple explanation for the recent results of Bender, Brody and Jones (quant-ph/0208076) on the CPT-symmetry of a class of PT-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We present a natural extension of these results to the class of diagonalizable pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians H with a discrete spectrum. In particular, we introduce generalized parity (${\cal P}$), time-reversal (${\cal T}$), and charge-conj…
Within the ideas of pseudo-supersymmetry, we have studied a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H_{-}=ω(ξ^† ξ+\1/2)+αξ^{2}+βξ^{†2}$, where $α\neq β$ and $ξ$ is a first order differential operator, to obtain the partner potentials $V_{+}(x)$ and $V_{-}(x)$ which are new isotonic and isotonic nonlinear oscillators, respectively, as the Hermitian equivalents of the non-Hermitian partner Hamiltonians $H_{\pm}$. We have provided an algebraic way to obtain the spectrum and wavefunctions of a nonlinear isotonic oscillator. The solutions of $V_{-}(x)$ which are Hermitian counterparts of Swanson Hamiltonian are…
By modifying and generalizing known supersymmetric models we are able to find four different sets of one-dimensional Hamiltonians for the inverted harmonic oscillator. The first set of Hamiltonians is derived by extending the supersymmetric quantum mechanics with reflections to non-Hermitian supercharges. The second set is obtained by generalizing the supersymmetric quantum mechanics valid for non-Hermitian supercharges with the Dunkl derivative instead of $\frac{d}{dx}$. Also, by changing the derivative $\frac{d}{dx}$ by the Dunkl derivative in the creation and annihilation-type operators of …
For a given standard Hamiltonian H=[p-A(x)]^2/(2m)+V(x) with arbitrary complex scalar potential V and vector potential A, with x real, we construct an invertible antilinear operator τsuch that H is τ-anti-pseudo-Hermitian, i.e., H^\dagger=τHτ^{-1}. We use this result to give the explicit form of a linear Hermitian invertible operator with respect to which any standard PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with a real degree of freedom is pseudo-Hermitian. Our results do not make use of the assumption that H is diagonalizable or that its spectrum is discrete.
We recall the importance of recognizing the different mathematical nature of various concepts relating to PT-symmetric quantum theories. After clarifying the relation between supersymmetry and pseudo-supersymmetry, we prove generically that nonlinear pseudo-supersymmetry, recently proposed by Sinha and Roy, is just a special case of N-fold supersymmetry. In particular, we show that all the models constructed by these authors have type A 2-fold supersymmetry. Furthermore, we prove that an arbitrary one-body quantum Hamiltonian which admits two (local) solutions in closed form belongs to type A …
The quantum measurement axiom dictates that physical observables and in particular the Hamiltonian must be diagonalizable and have a real spectrum. For a time-independent Hamiltonian (with a discrete spectrum) these conditions ensure the existence of a positive-definite inner product that renders the Hamiltonian self-adjoint. Unlike for a time-independent Hamiltonian, this does not imply the unitarity of the Schroedinger time-evolution for a general time-dependent Hamiltonian. We give an additional necessary and sufficient condition for the unitarity of time-evolution. In particular, we obtain…
Given a diagonalizable $N\times N$ matrix $H$, whose non-degenerate spectrum consists of $p$ pairs of complex conjugate eigenvalues and additional $N-2p$ real eigenvalues, we determine all metrics $M$, of all possible signatures, with respect to which $H$ is pseudo-hermitian. In particular, we show that any compatible $M$ must have $p$ pairs of opposite eigenvalues in its spectrum so that $p$ is the minimal number of both positive and negative eigenvalues of $M$. We provide explicit parametrization of the space of all admissible metrics and show that it is topologically a $p$-dimensional torus…
We give two characterization theorems for pseudo-Hermitian (possibly nondiagonalizable) Hamiltonians with a discrete spectrum that admit a block-diagonalization with finite-dimensional diagonal blocks. In particular, we prove that for such an operator H the following statements are equivalent. 1. H is pseudo-Hermitian; 2. The spectrum of H consists of real and/or complex-conjugate pairs of eigenvalues and the geometric multiplicity and the dimension of the diagonal blocks for the complex-conjugate eigenvalues are identical; 3. H is Hermitian with respect to a positive-semidefinite inner produc…
Multiple Meixner polynomials are polynomials in one variable which satisfy orthogonality relations with respect to $r>1$ different negative binomial distributions (Pascal distributions). There are two kinds of multiple Meixner polynomials, depending on the selection of the parameters in the negative binomial distribution. We recall their definition and some formulas and give generating functions and explicit expressions for the coefficients in the nearest neighbor recurrence relation. Following a recent construction of Miki, Tsujimoto, Vinet and Zhedanov (for multiple Meixner polynomials of th…
A family of non-Hermitian but ${\cal PT}-$symmetric $2J$ by $2J$ toy-model tridiagonal-matrix Hamiltonians $H^{(2J)}=H^{(2J)}(t)$ with $J=K+M=1,2,\ldots$ and $t<J^2$ is studied, for which a real but non-Hermitian $2K$ by $2K$ tridiagonal-submatrix component $C(t)$ of the Hamiltonian is assumed coupled to its other two complex but Hermitian $M$ by $M$ tridiagonal-submatrix components $A(t)$ and $B(t)$. By construction, (i) all of the submatrices get decoupled at $t=t_M=M\,(2J-M)$ with $M=1,2,\ldots,J$; (ii) at all of the parameters $t=t_M$ with $M=J-K=0,1,\ldots,J-1$ the Hamiltonian ceases to b…
A diagonalizable non-Hermitian Hamiltonian having a real spectrum may be used to define a unitary quantum system, if one modifies the inner product of the Hilbert space properly. We give a comprehensive and essentially self-contained review of the basic ideas and techniques responsible for the recent developments in this subject. We provide a critical assessment of the role of the geometry of the Hilbert space in conventional quantum mechanics to reveal the basic physical principle motivating our study. We then offer a survey of the necessary mathematical tools and elaborate on a number of rel…
The supersymmetry method pioneered by Wegner and Efetov (1979-1983) is reviewed for the case of Hermitian band random matrices, with special attention given to the original method of Schaefer and Wegner and a recent variant due to Fyodorov. Particular emphasis is placed on correctness of the mathematical reasoning.
We discuss non-Hermitian field theories where the spectrum of the Hamiltonian involves only real energies. We make three observations. (i) The theories obtained from supersymmetric theories by nonanticommutative deformations belong in many cases to this class. (ii) When the deformation parameter is small, the deformed theory enjoys the same supersymmetry algebra as the undeformed one. Half of the supersymmetries are manifest and the existence of another half can be deduced from the structure of the spectrum. (iii) Generically, the conventionally defined S--matrix is not unitary for such theori…
We study intertwining relations for matrix one-dimensional, in general, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians by matrix differential operators of arbitrary order. It is established that for any matrix intertwining operator Q_N^- of minimal order N there is a matrix operator Q_{N'}^+ of different, in general, order N' that intertwines the same Hamiltonians as Q_N^- in the opposite direction and such that the products Q_{N'}^+Q_N^- and Q_N^-Q_{N'}^+ are identical polynomials of the corresponding Hamiltonians. The related polynomial algebra of supersymmetry is constructed. The problems of minimization and o…
We study a reflectionless PT-symmetric quantum system described by the pair of complexified Scarf II potentials mutually displaced in the half of their pure imaginary period. Analyzing the rich set of intertwining discrete symmetries of the pair, we find an exotic supersymmetric structure based on three matrix differential operators that encode all the properties of the system, including its reflectionless (finite-gap) nature. The structure we revealed particularly sheds new light on the splitting of the discrete states into two families, related to the bound and resonance states in Hermitian …
We show that the formalism of supersymmetry (SUSY), when applied to parity-time (PT) symmetric optical potentials, can give rise to novel refractive index landscapes with altogether non-trivial properties. In particular, we find that the presence of gain and loss allows for arbitrarily removing bound states from the spectrum of a structure. This is in stark contrast to the Hermitian case, where the SUSY formalism can only address the fundamental mode of a potential. Subsequently we investigate isospectral families of complex potentials that exhibit entirely real spectra, despite the fact that …
We investigate supergroups with Grassmann parameters replaced by odd Clifford parameters. The connection with non-anticommutative supersymmetry is discussed. A Berezin-like calculus for odd Clifford variables is introduced. Fermionic covariant derivatives for supergroups with odd Clifford variables are derived. Applications to supersymmetric quantum mechanics are made. Deformations of the original supersymmetric theories are encountered when the fermionic covariant derivatives do not obey the graded Leibniz property. The simplest non-trivial example is given by the N=2 SQM with a real $(1,2,1)…
We study the Nonlinear (Polynomial, N-fold,...) Supersymmetry algebra in one-dimensional QM. Its structure is determined by the type of conjugation operation (Hermitian conjugation or transposition) and described with the help of the Super-Hamiltonian projection on the zero-mode subspace of a supercharge. We show that the SUSY algebra with transposition symmetry is always polynomial in the Hamiltonian if supercharges represent differential operators of finite order. The appearance of the extended SUSY with several (complex or real) supercharges is analyzed in details and it is established that…
We note that, though nonanticommutative (NAC) deformations of Minkowski supersymmetric theories do not respect the reality condition and seem to lead to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians H, the latter belong to the class of ``cryptoreal'' Hamiltonians considered recently by Bender and collaborators. They can be made manifestly Hermitian via the similarity transformation H -> exp{R} H exp{-R} with a properly chosen R. The deformed model enjoys the same supersymmetry algebra as the undeformed one, though being realized differently on the involved canonical variables. Besides quantum-mechanical models, …

This article investigates a set of partial differential equations, the DT-instanton equations, whose solutions can be regarded as a generalization of the notion of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections. These equations owe their name to the hope that they may be useful in extending the DT-invariant to the case of symplectic 6-manifolds. In this article, we give the first examples of non-Abelian and irreducible DT-instantons on non-Kähler manifolds. These are constructed for all homogeneous almost Hermitian structures on the manifold of full flags in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Together with the existence resul…
New non Hermitian Hamiltonians are generated, as isospectral partners of the generalized Swanson model, viz., $ H_- = {\cal{A}}^{\dagger} {\cal{A}} + α{\cal{A}} ^2 + β{\cal{A}}^{\dagger 2} $, where $ αβ$ are real constants, with $ α\neq β$, and ${\cal{A}}^{\dagger}$ and ${\cal{A}}$ are generalized creation and annihilation operators. It is shown that the initial Hamiltonian $H_-$, and its partner $H_+$, are related by pseudo supersymmetry, and they share all the eigen energies except for the ground state. This pseudo supersymmetric extension enlarges the class of non Hermitian Hamiltonians $H_…
There are several methods to treat ensembles of random matrices in symmetric spaces, circular matrices, chiral matrices and others. Orthogonal polynomials and the supersymmetry method are particular powerful techniques. Here, we present a new approach to calculate averages over ratios of characteristic polynomials. At first sight paradoxically, one can coin our approach "supersymmetry without supersymmetry" because we use structures from supersymmetry without actually mapping onto superspaces. We address two kinds of integrals which cover a wide range of applications for random matrix ensemble…
We reconsider the problem of calculating a general spectral correlation function containing an arbitrary number of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a N x N random matrix taken from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Deviating from the standard "supersymmetry" approach, we integrate out Grassmann variables at the early stage and circumvent the use of the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation in the "bosonic" sector. The method, suggested recently by one of us, is shown to be capable of calculation when reinforced with a generalization of the Itzykson-Zuber integral to a non…
Classical differential geometry can be encoded in spectral data, such as Connes' spectral triples, involving supersymmetry algebras. In this paper, we formulate non-commutative geometry in terms of supersymmetric spectral data. This leads to generalizations of Connes' non-commutative spin geometry encompassing non-commutative Riemannian, symplectic, complex-Hermitian and (Hyper-)Kaehler geometry. A general framework for non-commutative geometry is developed from the point of view of supersymmetry and illustrated in terms of examples. In particular, the non-commutative torus and the non-commuta…
