In the last decade, the development of new ideas in quantum theory, including geometric and deformation quantization, the non-Abelian Berry factor, super- and BRST symmetries, non-commutativity, has called into play the geometric techniques based on the deep interplay between algebra, differential geometry and topology. The present book aims at being a guide to advanced differential geometric and topological methods in quantum mechanics. Their main peculiarity lies in the fact that geometry in quantum theory speaks mainly the algebraic language of rings, modules, sheaves and categories. Geometry is by no means the primary scope of the book, but it underlies many ideas in modern quantum physics and provides the most advanced schemes of quantization.
The algebraic approach to quantum mechanics has been vital to the development of quantum theory since its inception, and it has evolved into a mathematically rigorous $C^\ast$-algebraic formulation of the theory's axioms. Conversely, the functional approach in the form of Feynman path integrals is far from mathematically rigorous: Nevertheless, path integrals provide an equally valid and useful formulation of the axioms of quantum mechanics. The two approaches can be merged by employing a notion of functional integration based on topological groups that allows to construct functional integral …
We propose $Sp\,(8,\R)$ and its Langlands dual $SO(9,\R)$ as dynamical groups for closed quantum systems. Restricting here to the non-compact group $Sp\,(8,\R)$, the quantum theory is constructed and investigated. The functional Mellin transform plays a prominent role in defining the quantum theory. It provides a bridge between the quantum algebra of observables and the algebra of operators on Hilbert spaces furnishing unitary representations that are induced from a distinguished parabolic subgroup of $Sp\,(8,\C)$. As well, the parabolic subgroup renders a fiber bundle construction that models…
We show how to formulate physical theory taking as a starting point the set of states (geometric approach). We discuss the relation of this formulation to the conventional approach to classical and quantum mechanics and the theory of complex systems. The equations of motion and the formulas for probabilities of physical quantities are analyzed. A heuristic proof of decoherence in our setting is used to justify the formulas for probabilities. We show that any physical theory theory can be obtained from classical theory if we restrict the set of observables. This remark can be used to construct …
I review the various algebraic foundations of quantum mechanics. They have been suggested since the birth of this theory till up to last year. They are the following ones: Heisenberg-Born-Jordan (1925), Weyl (1928), Dirac (1930), von Neumann (1936), Segal (1947), T.F. Jordan (1986), Morchio and Strocchi (2009) and Buchholz and Fregenhagen (2019). Three cases are stressed: 1) the misinterpretation of Dirac foundation; 2) von Neumann conversion from the analytic approach of Hilbert space to the algebraic approach of the rings of operators; 3) the recent foundation of quantum mechanics upon the a…
Recently there has been much interest in deriving the quantum formalism and the set of quantum correlations from simple axioms. In this paper, we provide a step-by-step derivation of the quantum formalism that tackles both these problems and helps us to understand why this formalism is as it is. We begin with a structureless system that only includes real-valued observables, states and a (not specified) state update, and we gradually identify theory-independent conditions that make the algebraic structure of quantum mechanics be assimilated by it. In the first part of the paper, we derive esse…
To characterize entanglement of tripartite $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d$ systems, we employ algebraic-geometric tools that are invariants under Stochastic Local Operation and Classical Communication (SLOCC), namely $k$-secant varieties and one-multilinear ranks. Indeed, by means of them, we present a classification of tripartite pure states in terms of a finite number of families and subfamilies. At the core of it stands out a fine-structure grouping of three-qutrit entanglement.
This article elaborates on entanglement entropy and quantum information theory of geometric flows of (relativistic) Lagrange--Hamilton mechanical systems. A set of basic geometric and quantum mechanics and probability concepts together with methods of computation are developed in general covariant form for curved phase spaces modelled as cotangent Lorentz bundles. The constructions are based on ideas relating the Grigory Perelman's entropy for geometric flows and associated statistical thermodynamic systems to the quantum von Neumann entropy, classical and quantum relative and conditional entr…
Noether's celebrated theorem associating symmetry and conservation laws in classical field theory is adapted to allow for broken symmetry in geometric mechanics and is shown to play a central role in deriving and understanding the generation of fluid circulation via the Kelvin-Noether theorem for ideal fluids with stochastic advection by Lie transport (SALT).
We develop techniques for describing the derived moduli spaces of solutions to the equations of motion in twists of supersymmetric gauge theories as derived algebraic stacks. We introduce a holomorphic twist of N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory and compute the derived moduli space. We then compute the moduli spaces for the Kapustin-Witten topological twists as its further twists. The resulting spaces for the A- and B-twist are closely related to the de Rham stack of the moduli space of algebraic bundles and the de Rham moduli space of flat bundles, respectively. In particular, we find the unexpe…
We are describing relations between Schrödinger's variational problem and Onsager's approach to nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Although the second work on reciprocal relations and detailed balance has been published in the same year (1931) as the first one, the impact of Schrödinger's idea has not yet been considered in the classical context of Onsager.
