We study the dynamics of a quantum particle in R^(n+m) constrained by a strong potential force to stay within a distance of order hbar (in suitable units) from a smooth n-dimensional submanifold M. We prove that in the semiclassical limit the evolution of the wave function is approximated in norm, up to terms of order hbar^(1/2), by the evolution of a semiclassical wave packet centred on the trajectory of the corresponding classical constrained system.
Exact procedures that follow Dirac's constraint quantization of gauge theories are usually technically involved and often difficult to implement in practice. We overview an "effective" scheme for obtaining the leading order semiclassical corrections to the dynamics of constrained quantum systems developed elsewhere. Motivated by the geometrical view of quantum mechanics, our method mimics the classical Dirac-Bergmann algorithm and avoids direct reference to a particular representation of the physical Hilbert space. We illustrate the procedure through the example of a relativistic particle in M…
We study the semiclassical Einstein field equations with a Klein-Gordon field in ultrastatic and static spacetimes. In both cases, the equations for the spacetime metric become constraint equations. In the ultrastatic case, the Hadamard singular structure can be characterised explicitly, which allows one to in principle give initial data for the Wightman function that has correct distributional singularities, such that the expectation value of the renormalised stress-energy tensor of the solution can be defined, and that hence the semiclassical Einstein equations make sense. Assuming a "positi…
The notion of Loschmidt echo (also called "quantum fidelity") has been introduced in order to study the (in)-stability of the quantum dynamics under perturbations of the Hamiltonian. It has been extensively studied in the past few years in the physics literature, in connection with the problems of "quantum chaos", quantum computation and decoherence. In this paper, we study this quantity semiclassically (as $\hbar \to 0$), taking as reference quantum states the usual coherent states. The latter are known to be well adapted to a semiclassical analysis, in particular with respect to semiclassica…
Quantum magic squares were recently introduced as a 'magical' combination of quantum measurements. In contrast to quantum measurements, they cannot be purified (i.e. dilated to a quantum permutation matrix) -- only the so-called semiclassical ones can. Purifying establishes a relation to an ideal world of fundamental theoretical and practical importance; the opposite of purifying is described by the matrix convex hull. In this work, we prove that semiclassical magic squares can be purified to quantum Latin squares, which are 'magical' combinations of orthonormal bases. Conversely, we prove tha…
We show that a strongly perturbed quantum system, being a semiclassical system characterized by the Wigner-Kirkwood expansion for the propagator, has the same expansion for the eigenvalues as for the WKB series. The perturbation series is rederived by the duality principle in perturbation theory.
We investigate symmetric oscillators, and in particular their quantization, by employing semiclassical and quantum phase functions introduced in the context of Liouville-Green transformations of the Schrödinger equation. For anharmonic oscillators, first order semiclassical quantization is seldom accurate and the higher order expansions eventually break down given the asymptotic nature of the series. A quantum phase that allows in principle to retrieve the exact quantum mechanical quantization condition and wavefunctions is given along with an iterative scheme to compute it. The arbitrariness …
The semiclassical long-time limit of free evolution of quantum wave packets on the torus is under consideration. Despite of simplicity of this system, there are still open questions concerning the detailed description of the evolution on time scales beyond the Ehrenfest time. One of the approaches is based on the limiting Wigner or Husimi distributions of time-evolved wave packets as the Planck constant tends to zero and time tends to infinity. We derive explicit expressions for semiclassical measures corresponding to all time scales and the corresponding stages of evolution: classical-like mo…
The effective technique for analyzing representation-independent features of quantum systems based on the semiclassical approximation (developed elsewhere), has been successfully used in the context of the canonical (Weyl) algebra of the basic quantum observables. Here we perform the important step of extending this effective technique to the quantization of a more general class of finite-dimensional Lie algebras. The case of a Lie algebra with a single central element (the Casimir element) is treated in detail by considering semiclassical states on the corresponding universal enveloping algeb…
Energy level statistics of quantized chaotic systems have been evaluated in the semiclassical limit via their periodic orbits using the Gutzwiller and related trace formulae. Here we evaluate a spectral statistic of chaotic 4-regular quantum graphs from their periodic orbits without the semiclassical limit. The variance of the n-th coefficient of the characteristic polynomial is determined by the sizes of the sets of distinct primitive periodic orbits with n bonds which have no self-intersections, and the sizes of the sets with a given number of self-intersections which all consist of two sect…
The global in-time semiclassical and relaxation limits of the bipolar quantum hydrodynamic model for semiconductors are investigated in $R^3$. We prove that the unique strong solution converges globally in time to the strong solution of classical bipolar hydrodynamical equation in the process of semiclassical limit and to that of the classical Drift-Diffusion system under the combined relaxation and semiclassical limits.
We propose a matrix model which embodies the semiclassical approach to the problem of quantum transport in chaotic systems. Specifically, a matrix integral is presented whose perturbative expansion satisfies precisely the semiclassical diagrammatic rules for the calculation of general counting statistics. Evaluating it exactly, we show that it agrees with corresponding predictions from random matrix theory. This uncovers the algebraic structure behind the equivalence between these two approaches, and opens the way for further semiclassical calculations.
In this paper we derive a semiclassical hydrodynamic system for electron densities and currents in the two energy bands of a semiconductor. We use the semiclassical Wigner equation with a k.p Hamiltonian and a BGK dissipative term to construct the first two moment equations. The closure of the moment system is obtained using the Maximum Entropy Principle, by minimizing a Gibbs free-energy functional under suitable constraints. We prove that the constraint equations can be uniquely solved, i.e. that the local equilibrium state can be parametrized by the density and velocity field. Some BGK-like…
Essential properties of semiclassical approximation for quantum mechanics are viewed as axioms of an abstract semiclassical mechanics. Its symmetry properties are discussed. Semiclassical systems being invariant under Lie groups are considered. An infinitesimal analog of group relation is written. Sufficient conditions for reconstructing semiclassical group transformations (integrability of representation of Lie algebra) are discussed. The obtained results may be used for mathematical proof of Poincare invariance of semiclasical Hamiltonian field theory and for investigation of quantum anomali…
We show that the semiclassical approach to chaotic quantum transport in the presence of time-reversal symmetry can be described by a matrix model, i.e. a matrix integral whose perturbative expansion satisfies the semiclassical diagrammatic rules for the calculation of transport statistics. This approach leads very naturally to the semiclassical derivation of universal predictions from random matrix theory.
A non-associative algebra of observables cannot be represented as operators on a Hilbert space, but it may appear in certain physical situations. This article employs algebraic methods in order to derive uncertainty relations and semiclassical equations, based on general properties of quantum moments.
Given a quantum Hamiltonian, we explain how the dynamical properties of the underlying classical system affect the behaviour of quantum eigenstates in the semi-classical limit. We study this problem via the notion of semiclassical measures. We mostly focus on two opposite dynamical paradigms: completely integrable systems and chaotic ones. We recall standard tools from microlocal analysis and from dynamical systems. We show how to use them in order to illustrate the classical-quantum correspondance and to compare properties of completely integrable and chaotic systems.
In this paper we develop the topics of Quantum Recurrences and of Quantum Fidelity which have attracted great interest in recent years. The return probability is given by the square modulus of the overlap between a given initial wavepacket and the corresponding evolved one; quantum recurrences in time can be observed if this overlap is unity. We provide some conditions under which this is semiclassically achieved taking as initial wavepacket a coherent state located on a closed orbit of the corresponding classical motion. The "quantum fidelity" (or Loschmidt Echo) is the square modulus of the …
The semiclassically scaled time-dependent multi-particle Schrödinger equation describes, inter alia, quantum dynamics of nuclei in a molecule. It poses the combined computational challenges of high oscillations and high dimensions. This paper reviews and studies numerical approaches that are robust to the small semiclassical parameter. We present and analyse variationally evolving Gaussian wave packets, Hagedorn's semiclassical wave packets, continuous superpositions of both thawed and frozen Gaussians, and Wigner function approaches to the direct computation of expectation values of observabl…
In this paper we explore the connection between semi-classical and quantum Birkhoff canonical forms (BCF) for Schrodinger operators. In particular we give a "non-symbolic" operator theoretic derivation of the quantum Birkhoff canonical form and provide an explicit recipe for expressing the quantum BCF in terms of the semi-classical BCF.
We study the chaotic behaviour and the quantum-classical correspondence for the baker's map. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation values is investigated and it is numerically shown that it is lost at the logarithmic timescale. The quantum chaos degree is computed and it is demonstrated that it describes the chaotic features of the model. The correspondence between classical and quantum chaos degrees is considered.
We introduce a modified Schrödinger operator where the semiclassical Laplacian is perturbed by artificial interface conditions occurring at the boundaries of the potential's support. The corresponding dynamics is analysed in the regime of quantum wells in a semiclassical island. Under a suitable energy constraint for the initial states, we show that the time propagator is stable w.r.t. the non-selfadjont perturbation, provided that this is parametrized through infinitesimal functions of the semiclassical parameter 'h'. It has been recently shown that h-dependent artificial interface conditions…
Within the framework of Weyl calculus we establish a quantum-classical correspondence for the time evolution of observables generated by a Dirac-Hamiltonian. This includes a semiclassical separation of particles and antiparticles. We then prove quantum ergodicity for Dirac-Hamiltonians under the condition that a skew product of the classical relativistic translational motion and relativistic spin precession is ergodic.
Quantum fields do not satisfy the pointwise energy conditions that are assumed in the original singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking. Accordingly, semiclassical quantum gravity lies outside their scope. Although a number of singularity theorems have been derived under weakened energy conditions, none is directly derived from quantum field theory. Here, we employ a quantum energy inequality satisfied by the quantized minimally coupled linear scalar field to derive a singularity theorem valid in semiclassical gravity. By considering a toy cosmological model, we show that our result predict…
In this work we consider the KAM renormalizability problem for small pseudodifferential perturbations of the semiclassical isochronous transport operator with Diophantine frequencies on the torus. Assuming that the symbol of the perturbation is real analytic and globally bounded, we prove convergence of the quantum Lindstedt series and describe completely the set of semiclassical measures and quantum limits of the renormalized system. Each of these measures is given by symplectic deformation of the Haar measure on an invariant torus for the unperturbed classical system.
This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so d…
In the previous article a new combinatorial and thus purely algebraical approach to quantum gravity, called Algebraic Quantum Gravity (AQG), was introduced. In the framework of AQG existing semiclassical tools can be applied to operators that encode the dynamics of AQG such as the Master constraint operator. In this article we will analyse the semiclassical limit of the (extended) algebraic Master constraint operator and show that it reproduces the correct infinitesimal generators of General Relativity. Therefore the question whether General Relativity is included in the semiclassical sector o…
We consider the problem of a semiclassical description of quantum chaotic transport, when a tunnel barrier is present in one of the leads. Using a semiclassical approach formulated in terms of a matrix model, we obtain transport moments as power series in the reflection probability of the barrier, whose coefficients are rational functions of the number of open channels M. Our results are therefore valid in the quantum regime and not only when $M\gg 1$. The expressions we arrive at are not identical with the corresponding predictions from random matrix theory, but are in fact much simpler. Both…
In this paper we show how deformation quantization of line bundles over a Poisson manifold $M$ produces a canonical action $Φ$ of the Picard group $\Pic(M)\cong H^2(M,\mathbb Z)$ on the moduli space of equivalence classes of differential star products on $M$, $\Def(M)$. The orbits of $Φ$ characterize Morita equivalent star products on $M$. We describe the semiclassical limit of $Φ$ in terms of the characteristic classes of star products by studying the semiclassical geometry of deformed line bundles.
