In this paper, we prove the equidistribution property of high-frequency eigensections of a certain series of unitary flat bundles, using the mixture of semiclassical and geometric quantizations.
Within the framework of Weyl calculus we establish a quantum-classical correspondence for the time evolution of observables generated by a Dirac-Hamiltonian. This includes a semiclassical separation of particles and antiparticles. We then prove quantum ergodicity for Dirac-Hamiltonians under the condition that a skew product of the classical relativistic translational motion and relativistic spin precession is ergodic.
This undergraduate thesis is concerned with developing the tools of differential geometry and semiclassical analysis needed to understand the the quantum ergodicity theorem of Schnirelman (1974), Zelditch (1987), and Colin de Verdière (1985) and the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). The former states that, on any Riemannian manifold with negative curvature or ergodic geodesic flow, the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator equidistribute in phase space with density 1. Under the same assumptions, the latter states that the eigenfunctions induce a seque…
We study the semiclassical time evolution of observables given by matrix valued pseudodifferential operators and construct a decomposition of the Hilbert space $L^2(\rz^d)\otimes\kz^n$ into a finite number of almost invariant subspaces. For a certain class of observables, that is preserved by the time evolution, we prove an Egorov theorem. We then associate with each almost invariant subspace of $L^2(\rz^d)\otimes\kz^n$ a classical system on a product phase space $\TRd\times\cO$, where $\cO$ is a compact symplectic manifold on which the classical counterpart of the matrix degrees of freedom is…
We analyze the semiclassical limit of spectral theory on manifolds whose metrics have jump-like discontinuities. Such systems are quite different from manifolds with smooth Riemannian metrics because the semiclassical limit does not relate to a classical flow but rather to branching (ray-splitting) billiard dynamics. In order to describe this system we introduce a dynamical system on the space of functions on phase space. To identify the quantum dynamics in the semiclassical limit we compute the principal symbols of the Fourier integral operators associated to reflected and refracted geodesic …
We study the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions of quantum systems with ergodic classical limit. By the quantum ergodicity theorem almost all of these eigenfunctions become equidistributed in a weak sense. We give a simple derivation of an upper bound of order $\abs{\ln\hbar}^{-1}$ on the rate of quantum ergodicity if the classical system is ergodic with a certain rate. In addition we obtain a similar bound on transition amplitudes if the classical system is weak mixing. Both results generalise previous ones by Zelditch. We then extend the results to some classes of quantised maps on th…
Quantum ergodicity, which expresses the semiclassical convergence of almost all expectation values of observables in eigenstates of the quantum Hamiltonian to the corresponding classical microcanonical average, is proven for non-relativistic quantum particles with spin 1/2. It is shown that quantum ergodicity holds, if a suitable combination of the classical translational dynamics and the spin dynamics along the trajectories of the translational motion is ergodic.
Geometric Brownian motion (GBM) is a model for systems as varied as financial instruments and populations. The statistical properties of GBM are complicated by non-ergodicity, which can lead to ensemble averages exhibiting exponential growth while any individual trajectory collapses according to its time-average. A common tactic for bringing time averages closer to ensemble averages is diversification. In this letter we study the effects of diversification using the concept of ergodicity breaking.
We examine high energy eigenfunctions for the Dirichlet Laplacian on domains where the billiard flow exhibits mixed dynamical behavior. (More generally, we consider semiclassical Schrodinger operators with mixed assumptions on the Hamiltonian flow.) Specificially, we assume that the billiard flow has an invariant ergodic component, U, and study defect measures, mu, of positivie density subsequences of eigenfunctions (and, more generally, of almost orthogonal quasimodes). We show that any defect measure associated to such a subsequence, when restricted to U, satisfies mu = c mu_L where mu_L is …
This paper is concerned with the long time behavior of Langevin dynamics of {\em Coulomb gases} in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with $d\geq 2$, that is a second order system of Brownian particles driven by an external force and a pairwise repulsive Coulomb force. We prove that the system converges exponentially to the unique Boltzmann-Gibbs invariant measure under a weighted total variation distance. The proof relies on a novel construction of Lyapunov function for the Coulomb system.
We look at the expectation values for quantized linear symplectic maps on the multidimensional torus and their distribution in the semiclassical limit. We construct super-scars that are stable under the arithmetic symmetries of the system and localize around invariant manifolds. We show that these super-scars exist only when there are isotropic rational subspaces, invariant under the linear map. In the case where there are no such scars, we compute the variance of the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized system, and present a conjecture for their limiting distributions.
We study the ergodic properties of eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators on a closed connected Riemannian manifold $M$ in case that the underlying Hamiltonian system possesses certain symmetries. More precisely, let $M$ carry an isometric effective action of a compact connected Lie group $G$. We prove an equivariant quantum ergodicity theorem assuming that the symmetry-reduced Hamiltonian flow on the principal stratum of the singular symplectic reduction of $M$ is ergodic. We deduce the theorem by proving an equivariant version of the semiclassical Weyl law, relying on recent results on sing…
In this paper we establish the ergodicity of Langevin dynamics for simple two-particle system involving a Lennard-Jones type potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such result for a system operating under this type of potential. Moreover we show that the dynamics are {\it geometrically} ergodic (have a spectral gap) and converge at a geometric rate. Methods from stochastic averaging are used to establish the existence of a Lyapunov function. The existence of a Lyapunov function in this setting seems resistant to more traditional approaches. This is a corrected version of th…
We prove a generalized version of the Quantum Ergodicity Theorem on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary. We apply it to prove some asymptotic properties on the distribution of typical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in geometric situations where the Liouville measure is not (or not known to be) ergodic.
We prove that any generic (i.e., possibly aperiodic) Lorenz gas in two dimensions, with finite horizon and non-degenerate geometrical features, is ergodic if it is recurrent. We also give examples of aperiodic recurrent gases.
We consider a simple model for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of a flexible polymer in dilute solution, demonstrating geometric ergodicity for a pair of particles that interact with each other through a nonlinear spring potential while being advected by a stochastic Stokes fluid velocity field. This is a generalization of previous models which have used linear spring forces as well as white-in-time fluid velocity fields. We follow previous work combining control theoretic arguments, Lyapunov functions, and hypo-elliptic diffusion theory to prove exponential convergence via a Harris chain argume…
We prove quantum ergodicity for a family of graphs that are obtained from ergodic one-dimensional maps of an interval using a procedure introduced by Pakonski et al (J. Phys. A, v. 34, 9303-9317 (2001)). As observables we take the L^2 functions on the interval. The proof is based on the periodic orbit expansion of a majorant of the quantum variance. Specifically, given a one-dimensional, Lebesgue-measure-preserving map of an interval, we consider an increasingly refined sequence of partitions of the interval. To this sequence we associate a sequence of graphs, whose directed edges correspond t…

The Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) conjecture of Rudnick-Sarnak is that every eigenfunction phi_n of the Laplacian on a manifold with uniformly-hyperbolic geodesic flow becomes equidistributed in the semiclassical limit (eigenvalue E_n -> infinity), that is, `strong scars' are absent. We study numerically the rate of equidistribution for a uniformly-hyperbolic Sinai-type planar Euclidean billiard with Dirichlet boundary condition (the `drum problem') at unprecedented high E and statistical accuracy, via the matrix elements <phi_n, A phi_m> of a piecewise-constant test function A. By collectin…
In this paper we develop the topics of Quantum Recurrences and of Quantum Fidelity which have attracted great interest in recent years. The return probability is given by the square modulus of the overlap between a given initial wavepacket and the corresponding evolved one; quantum recurrences in time can be observed if this overlap is unity. We provide some conditions under which this is semiclassically achieved taking as initial wavepacket a coherent state located on a closed orbit of the corresponding classical motion. The "quantum fidelity" (or Loschmidt Echo) is the square modulus of the …
The paper gives a symplectic-geometric account of semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics. We employ geometric techniques to "strip away" the symplectic structure behind the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and incorporate it into semiclassical wave packet dynamics. We show that the Gaussian wave packet dynamics is a Hamiltonian system with respect to the symplectic structure, apply the theory of symplectic reduction and reconstruction to the dynamics, and discuss dynamic and geometric phases in semiclassical mechanics. A simple harmonic oscillator example is worked out to illustrate th…
We consider the system of $N$ ($\ge2$) hard balls with masses $m_1,...,m_N$ and radius $r$ in the flat torus $\Bbb T_L^ν=\Bbb R^ν/L\cdot\Bbb Z^ν$ of size $L$, $ν\ge3$. We prove the ergodicity (actually, the Bernoulli mixing property) of such systems for almost every selection $(m_1,...,m_N; L)$ of the outer geometric parameters. This theorem complements my earlier result that proved the same, almost sure ergodicity for the case $ν=2$. The method of that proof was primarily dynamical-geometric, whereas the present approach is inherently algebraic.
We are concerned with the geometric properties of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR). SPR is a non-radiative electromagnetic surface wave that propagates in a direction parallel to the negative permittivity/dielectric material interface. It is known that the SPR oscillation is very sensitive to the material interface. However, we show that the SPR oscillation asymptotically localizes at places with high magnitude of curvature in a certain sense. Our work leverages the Heisenberg picture of quantization and quantum ergodicity first derived by Shnirelman, Zelditch, Colin de Verdière and Helffer…
We prove explicit semiclassical resolvent estimates for an integrable potential on the real line. The proof is a comparatively easy case of the spherical energies method, which has been used to prove similar theorems in higher dimensions and in more complicated geometric situations. The novelty in our results lies in the weakness of the assumptions on the potential.
Exact procedures that follow Dirac's constraint quantization of gauge theories are usually technically involved and often difficult to implement in practice. We overview an "effective" scheme for obtaining the leading order semiclassical corrections to the dynamics of constrained quantum systems developed elsewhere. Motivated by the geometrical view of quantum mechanics, our method mimics the classical Dirac-Bergmann algorithm and avoids direct reference to a particular representation of the physical Hilbert space. We illustrate the procedure through the example of a relativistic particle in M…
We demonstrate that the (s-wave) geometric spectrum of the Efimov energy levels in the unitary limit is generated by the radial motion of a primitive periodic orbit (and its harmonics) of the corresponding classical system. The action of the primitive orbit depends logarithmically on the energy. It is shown to be consistent with an inverse-squared radial potential with a lower cut-off radius. The lowest-order WKB quantization, including the Langer correction, is shown to reproduce the geometric scaling of the energy spectrum. The (WKB) mean-squared radii of the Efimov states scale geometricall…
