The dynamics of a self-gravitating ensemble of collisionless particles is modeled by the Nordström-Vlasov system in the framework of the Nordström scalar theory of gravitation. For this system in two space dimensions, integral representations of the first order derivatives of the field are derived. Using these representations we show global existence of smooth solutions for large data.
The Nordström-Vlasov system provides an interesting relativistic generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case, even though there is no direct physical application. The study of this model will probably lead to a better mathematical understanding of the class of non-linear systems consisting of hyperbolic and transport equations. In this paper it is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system converge to solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in a pointwise sense as the speed of light tends to infinity, providing a further and rigorous justification of this mode…
The Vlasov-Nordström-Fokker-Planck system describes the evolution of self-gravitating matter experiencing collisions with a fixed background of particles in the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. We study the spatially-homogeneous system and prove global existence and uniqueness of solutions for the corresponding initial value problem in three momentum dimensions. Additionally, we study the long time asymptotic behavior of the system and prove that even in the absence of friction, solutions possess a non-trivial asymptotic profile. An exact formula for the long time limi…
We study the Nordström-Vlasov system which describes the dynamics of a self-gravitating ensemble of collisionless particles in the framework of the Nordström scalar theory of gravitation. If the speed of light $c$ is considered as a parameter, it is known that in the Newtonian limit $c\to\infty$ the Vlasov-Poisson system is obtained. In this paper we determine a higher approximation and establish a pointwise error estimate of order $O(c^{-4})$. Such an approximation is usually called a 1.5 post-Newtonian approximation.
The Nordström-Vlasov system describes the evolution of self-gravitating collisionless matter in the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. We prove global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the corresponding initial value problem in three dimensions when the initial data for the scalar field are smooth and the initial particle density is smooth with compact support.
The Nordström-Vlasov system is a Lorentz invariant model for a self-gravitating collisionless gas. We establish suitable a-priori-bounds on the solutions of this system, which together with energy estimates and the smoothing effect of ``momentum averaging'' yield the existence of global weak solutions to the corresponding initial value problem. In the process we improve the continuation criterion for classical solutions which was derived recently. The weak solutions are shown to preserve mass.
The Nordström-Vlasov system describes the dynamics of a self-gravitating ensemble of collisionless particles in the framework of the Nordström scalar theory of gravitation. We prove existence and uniqueness of classical solutions of the Cauchy problem in three dimensions and establish a condition which guarantees that the solution is global in time. Moreover, we show that if one changes the sign of the source term in the field equation, which heuristically corresponds to the case of a repulsive gravitational force, then solutions blow up in finite time for a large class of initial data. Finall…
The Vlasov-Nordstrom system is a relativistic model for the description of a self-gravitating collisionless gas. In this paper we show, using a bootstrap argument, that classical small solutions of the Vlasov-Nordstrom system exist globally in time.
The Nordström-Vlasov system is a relativistic Lorentz invariant generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. The asymptotic behavior of solutions and the non-linear stability of steady states are investigated. It is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system with energy grater or equal to the mass satisfy a dispersion estimate in terms of the conformal energy. When the energy is smaller than the mass, we prove existence and non-linear (orbital) stability of a class of static solutions (isotropic polytropes) against general perturbations. The proof of orbital …
We prove the existence of axially symmetric solutions to the Vlasov--Poisson system in a rotating setting for sufficiently small angular velocity. The constructed steady states depend on Jacobi's integral and the proof relies on an implicit function theorem for operators.
We prove that solutions of the 3D relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system can be extended, as long as the quantity $σ_{-1}(t, x) = \max_{|ω|=1} \,\int_{R^3} \frac{dp}{\sqrt{1+p^2}}\, \frac{1}{(1+v\cdotω)}\, f(t, x, p)$ is bounded in $L^2_x$.
We consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell and Vlasov-Nordström systems which describe large particle ensembles interacting by either electromagnetic fields or a relativistic scalar gravity model. For both systems we derive a radiation formula analogous to the Einstein quadrupole formula in general relativity.
In this paper, we extend to the case of initial data constituted of a Dirac mass plus a bounded density (with finite moments) the theory of Lions and Perthame [6] for the Vlasov-Poisson equation. Our techniques also provide polynomially growing in time estimates for moments of the bounded density.
We prove the existence of stationary solutions for the density of an infinitely extended plasma interacting with an arbitrary configuration of background charges. Furthermore, we show that the solution cannot be unique if the total charge of the background is attractive. In this case, infinitely many different stationary solutions exist. The non-uniqueness can be explained by the presence of trapped particles orbiting the attractive background charge.
It is well known that steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, a widely used model in non-relativistic galactic dynamics, have negative energy. In this paper we derive the analogous property for two relativistic generalizations of the Vlasov-Poisson system: The Nordström-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the first case we show that the energy of steady states is bounded by their total rest mass; in the second case, where we also assume spherical symmetry, we prove an inequality which involves not only the energy and the rest mass, but also the central redshift. In both cases …
We prove the existence of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the stellar dynamic Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Einstein systems, which have the property that their spatial support is a finite, spherically symmetric shell with a vacuum region at the center.
A collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system in three space dimensions. A fixed background of positive charge - dependant upon only velocity - is assumed. The situation in which mobile negative ions balance the positive charge as x tends to infinity is considered. Thus, the total positive charge and the total negative charge are both infinite. Smooth solutions with appropriate asymptotic behavior for large x, which were previously shown to exist locally in time, are continued globally. This is done by showing that the charge density decays at least as fast as x^{-6}. This art…
We show global existence of classical solutions for the nonlinear Nordström theory with a source term and a cosmological constant under the assumption that the source term is small in an appropriate norm, while in some cases no smallness assumption on the initial data is required. In this theory, the gravitational field is described by a single scalar function that satisfies a certain semi-linear wave equation. We consider spatial periodic deviation from the background metric, that is why we study the semi-linear wave equation on the three-dimensional torus $\setT^3$ in the Sobolev spaces $H^m…
This paper studies the Vlasov-Monge-Ampere system (VMA), a fully non-linear version of the Vlasov-Poisson system (VP) where the (real) Monge-Ampere equation substitutes for the usual Poisson equation. This system can be derived as a geometric approximation of the Euler equations of incompressible fluid mechanics in the spirit of Arnold and Ebin. Global existence of weak solutions and local existence of smooth solutions are obtained. Links between the VMA system, the VP system and the Euler equations are established through rigorous asymptotic analysis.
In this paper, we study the set of stationary solutions of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck (VFP) equation. This equation describes the time evolution of the probability distribution of a particle moving under the influence of a double-well potential, an interaction potential, a friction force and a stochastic force. We prove, under suitable assumptions, that the VFP equation does not have a unique stationary solution and that there exists a phase transition. Our study relies on the recent results by Tugaut and coauthors regarding the McKean-Vlasov equation.
A collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system in three space dimensions. A fixed background of positive charge, which is independent of time and space, is assumed. The situation in which mobile negative ions balance the positive charge as x tends to infinity is considered. Hence the total positive charge, total negative charge, and total energy are all infinite. Smooth solutions with appropriate asymptotic behavior for large x, which were previously shown to exist locally in time, are continued globally for spherically symmetric data. This is done by showing that the charge de…
We consider the Vlasov-Poisson system with spherical symmetry and an exterior potential which is induced by a point mass in the center. This system can be used as a simple model for a newtonian galaxy surrounding a black hole. For this system, we establish a global existence result for classical solutions with shell-like initial data, i.e. the support of the density is bounded away from the point mass singularity. We also prove existence and stability of stationary solutions which describe static shells, where we use a variational approach which was established by Y. Guo and G. Rein.
For the Landau-Poisson system with Coulomb interaction in $\R^3_x$, we prove the global existence, uniqueness, and large time convergence rates to the Maxwellian equilibrium for solutions which start out sufficiently close.
In this paper we establish global existence and uniqueness of the solution to the three-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system in presence of point charges in case of repulsive interaction. The present analysis extends an analogeous two-dimensional result by Caprino and Marchioro [On the plasma-charge model, to appear in Kinetic and Related Models (2010)].
As is well known from the work of R. Glassey} and J. Schaeffer, the main energy estimates which are used in global existence results for the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply to the relativistic version of this system, and smooth solutions to the initial value problem with spherically symmetric initial data of negative energy blow up in finite time. For similar reasons the variational techniques by which Y. Guo and G. Rein obtained nonlinear stability results for the Vlasov-Poisson system do not apply in the relativistic situation. In the present paper a direct, non-variational …
This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of charged particles in a weakly inhomogeneous dilute gas. More precisely, we consider the existence of unique global in time classical solutions for the Vlasov-MaxwellBoltzmann system and its asymptotic behavior when the particle distribution function is a small perturbation around an arbitrarily large homogenous solution of the Boltzmann equation.
We consider the Vlasov-Poisson equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with initial data which are not $L^1$ in space and have unbounded support in the velocities. Assuming for the density a slight decay in space and a strong decay in velocities, we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution, thus generalizing the analogous result given in [5] for data compactly supported in the velocities.
We consider the two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system to model a two-component plasma whose distribution function is constant with respect to the third space dimension. First, we show how this two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system can be derived from the full three-dimensional system. The existence of compactly supported steady states with vanishing electric potential in a three-dimensional setting has already been investigated by A. L. Skubachevskii [15]. We show that his approach can easily be adapted to the two-dimensional system. However, our main result is to prove the existence of compac…
The time evolution of a collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Maxwell system which couples the Vlasov equation (the transport equation) with the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics. We only consider a 'two-dimensional' version of the problem since existence of global, classical solutions of the full three-dimensional problem is not known. We add external currents to the system, in applications generated by coils, to control the plasma in a proper way. After considering global existence of solutions to this system, differentiability of the control-to-state operator is proved. In applic…
A global-in-time existence theorem for classical solutions of the Vlasow-Darwin system is given under the assumption of smallness of the initial data. Furthermore it is shown that in case of spherical symmetry the system degenerates to the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system.
The review of existence theorems of bifurcation points of solutions for nonlinear operator equation in Banach spaces is presented. The sufficient conditions of bifurcation of solutions of boundary-value problem for Vlasov-Maxwell system are considered. The analytical method of Lyapunov-Schmidt-Trenogin is employed.
In 1989, R. DiPerna and P.-L. Lions established the existence of global weak solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell system. In the present notes we give a somewhat simplified proof of this result for the relativistic version of this system, the main purpose being to make this important result of kinetic theory more easily accessible to newcomers in the field. We show that the weak solutions preserve the total charge.
