We give a nonrigorous derivation of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation from the Schrodinger evolution of interacting fermions. The argument is based mainly on the assumption that a quasifree initial state satisfies a property called restricted quasifreeness in the weak coupling limit at any later time. By definition, a state is called restricted quasifree if the four-point and the eight-point functions of the state factorize in the same manner as in a quasifree state.
The classical Boltzmann equation is an integro-differential equation which describes the time evolution of rarefied gas in terms of a molecular distribution function. For some kinetic problems where it is necessary to add in the Boltzmann equation a source term depending on the independent and dependent variables. This paper is devoted to applying preliminary group classification to the Boltzmann equation with a source function by using the Lie group $L_{11}$ admitted by the classical Boltzmann equation. The developed strategy for deriving determining equation of an integro-differential equati…
Starting from the microscopic reduced Hartree-Fock equation, we derive the nanoscopic linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the electrostatic potential associated with the electron density.
For the phonon Boltzmann equation with only pair collisions we characterize the set of all collisional invariants under some mild conditions on the dispersion relation.
We show that several diffusion-based approximations (classical diffusion or SP1, SP2, SP3) to the linear Boltzmann equation can (for an infinite, homogeneous medium) be represented exactly by a non-classical transport equation. As a consequence, we indicate a method to solve diffusion-based approximations to the Boltzmann equation via Monte Carlo, with only statistical errors - no truncation errors.
We study the evolution of a quantum particle interacting with a random potential in the low density limit (Boltzmann-Grad). The phase space density of the quantum evolution defined through the Husimi function converges weakly to a linear Boltzmann equation with collision kernel given by the full quantum scattering cross section.
We propose a new macroscopic model derived from the classical nonlinear Boltzmann equation. A set of partial differential equations is obtained easily. The unknowns depend on the time and space coordinates, and are related to the distribution function, which is the unknown of the Boltzmann equation. This new model guarantees the conservation of the mass, momentum and energy. We prove that the set of equations coincides with the system obtained applying the discontinuous Galerkin method to the Boltzmann equation (see A. Majorana, Kinetic and Related models, 4 (2011), 139--151).
By combining the DiPerna and Lions techniques for the nonrelativistic Boltzmann equation and the Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeżewska device of the causality of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, it is shown that there exists a global mild solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with the assumptions of the relativistic scattering cross section including some relativistic hard interactions and the initial data satisfying finite mass, energy and entropy. This is in fact an extension of the result of Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeżewska to the case of the relativistic Boltzmann equ…
The paper is devoted to group analysis of the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Boltzmann equation with a source term. In fact, the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation with respect to the molecular velocity variable is considered. Using a particular class of solutions, the determining equation for the admitted Lie group is reduced to a partial differential equation for the source function. The latter equation is analyzed by an algebraic method. A complete group classification of the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation is given. All invariant solutions of this equation are als…
As a Newtonian cosmological model the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system is considered, and a slightly modified Boltzmann equation, which describes the stability of an expanding universe, is derived. Asymptotic behaviour of solutions turns out to depend on the expansion of the universe, and in this paper we consider the soft potential case and will obtain asymptotic behaviour.
We review some results concerning the derivation of the Boltzmann equation starting from the many-body classical Hamiltonian dynamics. In particular, the celebrated paper by O. E. Lanford III and the more recent papers [13, 23] are discussed.
By using the DiPerna and Lions techniques for the nonrelativistic Boltzmann equation, it is shown that there exists a global mild solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with the assumptions of the relativistic scattering cross section including some relativistic hard interactions and the initial data satifying finite mass, ``inertia'', energy and entropy.
We introduce a gradient flow formulation of linear Boltzmann equations. Under a diffusive scaling we derive a diffusion equation by using the machinery of gradient flows.
This paper studies a space-inhomogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation with pseudo-Maxwellian forces. Strong solutions are obtained for the Cauchy problem in a setting with large bounded L1 initial data. The main results are existence, uniqueness, stability and qualitative boundedness features for solutions conserving mass, momentum and energy.
We study the macroscopic transport properties of the quantum Lorentz gas in a crystal with short-range potentials, and show that in the Boltzmann-Grad limit the quantum dynamics converges to a random flight process which is not compatible with the linear Boltzmann equation. Our derivation relies on a hypothesis concerning the statistical distribution of lattice points in thin domains, which is closely related to the Berry-Tabor conjecture in quantum chaos.
In this article the linear Boltzmann equation is derived for a particle interacting with a Gaussian random field, in the weak coupling limit, with renewal in time of the random field. The initial data can be chosen arbitrarily. The proof is geometric and involves coherent states and semi-classical calculus.
Grad's moment models for Boltzmann equation were recently regularized to globally hyperbolic systems, and thus the regularized models attain local well-posedness for Cauchy data. The hyperbolic regularization is only related to the convection term in Boltzmann equation. We in this paper studied the regularized models with the presentation of collision terms. It is proved that the regularized models are linear stability at the local equilibrium and satisfy Yong's first stability condition with commonly used approximate collision terms, and particularly with Boltzmann's binary collision model.
The paper proves existence of renormalized solutions for a class of velocity-discrete coplanar stationary Boltzmann equations with given indata. The proof is based on the construction of a sequence of approximations with L1 compactness for an integrated collision frequency and gain term. The compactness is obtained using the Kolmogorov Riesz theorem.
A univariate polynomial equation is presented. It provides models of the thermal lattice Boltzmann equation. The models can be accurate up to any required level and can be applied to regular lattices, which allow efficient and accurate approximate solutions of the Boltzmann equation. We derive models satisfying the complete Galilean invariant and providing accuracy of the 4th-order moment and beyond. We simulate thermal shock tube problems to illustrate the accuracy of our models and to show the remarkably enhanced stability obtained by our models and our discretized equilibrium distributions.
A new probalistic approach to general relativistic kinetic theory is proposed. The general relativistic Boltzmann equation is linked to a new Markov process in a completely intrinsic way. This treatment is then used to prove the causal character of the relativistic Boltzmann model.
The Boltzmann-Nordheim equation is a modification of the Boltzmann equation, based on physical considerations, that describes the dynamics of the distribution of particles in a quantum gas composed of bosons or fermions. In this work we investigate the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation for bosons, in dimension $d\geq 3$. We show existence and uniqueness locally in time for any initial data in $L^\infty\left(1+|v|^s\right)$ with finite mass and energy, for a suitable $s$, as well as the instantaneous creation of moments of all order.
In this paper, we establish optimal hypoelliptic estimates for a class of kinetic equations, which are simplified linear models for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff.
The relativistic Boltzmann equation for a constant differential cross section and with periodic boundary conditions is considered. The speed of light appears as a parameter $c>c_0$ for a properly large and positive $c_0$. A local existence and uniqueness theorem is proved in an interval of time independent of $c>c_0$ and conditions are given such that in the limit $c\to +\infty$ the solutions converge, in a suitable norm, to the solutions of the non-relativistic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres.
Discretization of non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann Equation equations results in a system of non-linear equations with symmetric Jacobian. The Newton algorithm is the most useful tool for solving non-linear equations. It consists of solving a series of linear system of equations (Jacobian system). In this article, we adaptively define the tolerance of the Jacobian systems. Numerical experiment shows that compared to the traditional method our approach can save a substantial amount of computational work. The presented algorithm can be easily incorporated in existing simulators.
We study the time evolution of a quantum particle in a Gaussian random environment. We show that in the weak coupling limit the Wigner distribution of the wave function converges to a solution of a linear Boltzmann equation globally in time. The Boltzmann collision kernel is given by the Born approximation of the quantum differential scattering cross section.
The linear Boltzmann equation with constant coefficients in the three-dimensional infinite space is revisited. It is known that the Green's function can be calculated via the Fourier transform in the case of isotropic scattering. In this paper, we show that the three-dimensional Green's function can be computed with the Fourier transform even in the case of arbitrary anisotropic scattering.
Difference Boltzmann Equation is derived in a plane wavelets representation with account of two-particle correlations. It is shown that the set of plane wavelet orthonormal functions is complete. The set of ket vectors is used as the second quantization basis allowing introducing the positively definite distribution function. It is obtained that inhomogeneous system is described by numbers of particles at quantized positions with quantized momenta. Difference Boltzmann Equation transforms into the classical Boltzmann Equation in the limit, where distribution function varies little in and
We study the local-in-time hydrodynamic limit of the relativistic Boltzmann equation using a Hilbert expansion. More specifically, we prove the existence of local solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation that are nearby the local relativistic Maxwellian constructed from a class of solutions to the relativistic Euler equations that includes a large subclass of near-constant, non-vacuum fluid states. In particular, for small Knudsen number, these solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation have dynamics that are effectively captured by corresponding solutions to the relativistic Eul…
Based on a recent $L^{2}{-}L^{\infty}$ framework, we establish the acoustic limit of the Boltzmann equation for general collision kernels. The scaling of the fluctuations with respect to Knudsen number is optimal. Our approach is based on a new analysis of the compressible Euler limit of the Boltzmann equation, as well as refined estimates of Euler and acoustic solutions.
A linear Boltzmann equation is derived in the Boltzmann-Grad scaling for the deterministic dynamics of many interacting particles with random initial data. We study a Rayleigh gas where a tagged particle is undergoing hard-sphere collisions with background particles, which do not interact among each other. In the Boltzmann-Grad scaling, we derive the validity of a linear Boltzmann equation for arbitrary long times under moderate assumptions on higher moments of the initial distributions of the tagged particle and the possibly non-equilibrium distribution of the background. The convergence of t…
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with cutoff hard potentials it is shown that solutions remain bounded from above, uniformly in time, by a Maxwellian distribution, provided the initial data have a Maxwellian upper bound. The main technique is based on a comparison principle that uses a certain dissipative property of the linear Boltzmann equation. Implications of the technique to propagation of upper Maxwellian bounds in the spatially-inhomogeneous case are discussed.
We study the Cauchy Problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with near Vacuum initial data. Unique global in time "mild" solutions are obtained uniformly in the speed of light parameter $c \ge 1$. We furthermore prove that solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation converge to solutions of the Newtonian Boltzmann equation in the limit as $c\to\infty$ on arbitrary time intervals $[0,T]$, with convergence rate $1/c^{2-ε}$ for any $ε\in(0,2)$. This may be the first proof of unique global in time validity of the Newtonian limit for a Kinetic equation.
We consider the quantum Boltzmann equation, which describes the growth of the condensate, or in other words, models the interaction between excited atoms and a condensate. In this work, the full form of Bogoliubov dispersion law is considered, which leads to a detailed study of surface integrals inside the collision operator on energy manifolds. We prove that positive radial solutions of the quantum Boltzmann equation are bounded from below by a Gaussian, uniformly in time.
We study weak solutions of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules with a logarithmic singularity of the collision kernel for grazing collisions. Even though in this situation the Boltzmann operator enjoys only a very weak coercivity estimate, it still leads to strong smoothing of weak solutions in accordance to the smoothing expected by an analogy with a logarithmic heat equation.
We start with some global Maxwellian function $M$, which is a stationary solution (with the constant total density $ρ$) of the Boltzmann equation, and we denote the number of the corresponding space variables by $n$. The notion of distance between the global Maxwellian function and an arbitrary solution $f$ (with the same total density $ρ$ at the fixed moment $t$) of the Boltzmann equation is introduced. In this way we essentially generalize the important Kullback-Leibler distance, which was used before. An extremal problem to find a solution of the Boltzmann equation, such that $\dist\{M,f\}$…
The fluid dynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation leading to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid with constant density in the presence of material boundaries shares some important features with the better known inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations. The present paper slightly extends recent results from [C. Bardos, F. Golse, L. Paillard, Comm. Math. Sci., 10 (2012), 159--190] to the case of boundary conditions for the Boltzmann equation more general than Maxwell's accomodation condition.
In rotationally symmetric domains, the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition has a special type of equilibrium states called the rotational local Maxwellian which, unlike the uniform Maxwellian, has an additional term related to the angular momentum of the gas. In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem of the Boltzmann equation near the rotational local Maxwellian. Based on the L2-L1 framework of [12], we establish the global well-posedness and the convergence toward such equilibrium states.
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules enjoys the same Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator.
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials without cutoff. We prove that an exponential moment of order $ρ=\min\{2γ/(2-ν),2\}$, with the usual notation, is immediately created. This is stronger than what happens in the case with cutoff. We also show that exponential moments of order $ρ\in (0,2]$ are propagated.
In this paper we show global well-posedness near vacuum for the binary-ternary Boltzmann equation. The binary-ternary Boltzmann equation provides a correction term to the classical Boltzmann equation, taking into account both binary and ternary interactions of particles, and may serve as a more accurate description model for denser gases in non-equilibrium. Well-posedness of the classical Boltzmann equation and, independently, the purely ternary Boltzmann equation follow as special cases. To prove global well-posedness, we use a Kaniel-Shinbrot iteration and related work to approximate the sol…
The Cauchy problem for the inelastic Boltzmann equation is studied for small data. Existence and uniqueness of mild and weak solutions is obtained for sufficiently small data that lies in the space of functions bounded by Maxwellians. The technique used to derive the result is the well known iteration process of Kaniel and Shinbrot.
We present the arising of the Fick cross-diffusion system of equations for fluid mixtures from the multi-species Boltzmann in a rigorous manner in Sobolev spaces. To this end, we formally show that, in a diffusive scaling, the hydrodynamical limit of the kinetic system is the Fick model supplemented with a closure relation and we give explicit formulae for the macroscopic diffusion coefficients from the Boltzmann collision operator. Then, we provide a perturbative Cauchy theory in Sobolev spaces for the constructed Fick system, which turns out to be a dilated parabolic equation. We finally pro…
We consider solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a potential localised at the points of a Poisson process. We prove convergence of the phase-space distribution in the annealed Boltzmann-Grad limit to a semiclassical Wigner (or defect) measure and show that it is a solution of the linear Boltzmann equation. Our results hold for a large class of square-integrable initial data associated to Wigner measures, including Langragian states, WKB states and coherent states. This extends important previous work by Eng and Erdős.
We show the existence of smooth stationary solutions for the inelastic Boltzmann equation under the thermalization induced by a host-medium with a fixed distribution. This is achieved by controlling the Lp-norms, the moments and the regularity of the solutions for the Cauchy problem together with arguments related to a dynamical proof for the existence of stationary states.
It has long been suspected that the non-cutoff Boltzmann operator has similar coercivity properties as a fractional Laplacian. This has led to the hope that the homogenous Boltzmann equation enjoys similar regularity properties as the heat equation with a fractional Laplacian. In particular, the weak solution of the fully nonlinear non-cutoff homogenous Boltzmann equation with initial datum in $L^1_2(\mathbb{R}^d)\cap L\log L(\mathbb{R}^d)$, i.e., finite mass, energy and entropy, should immediately become Gevrey regular for strictly positive times. We prove this conjecture for Maxwellian molec…
We show that, by correctly selecting the probability distribution function $p(s)$ for a particle's distance-to-collision, the nonclassical diffusion equation can be represented exactly by the nonclassical linear Boltzmann equation for an infinite homogeneous medium. This choice of $p(s)$ preserves the $true$ mean-squared free path of the system, which sheds new light on the results obtained in previous work.
We study the long-time behavior of symmetric solutions of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation and a closely related nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. If the symmetry of the solutions corresponds to shear flows, the existence of stationary solutions can be ruled out because the energy is not conserved. After anisotropic rescaling both equations conserve the energy. We show that the rescaled Boltzmann equation does not admit stationary densities of Maxwellian type (exponentially decaying). For the rescaled Fokker-Planck equation we demonstrate that all solutions converge to a Maxwellian in the long…
We present a set of polynomial equations that provides models of the lattice Boltzmann theory for any required level of accuracy and for any dimensional space in a general form. We explicitly derive two- and three-dimensional models applicable to describe thermal compressible flows of the level of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We study the linear relaxation Boltzmann equation, a simple semiclassical kinetic model. We provide a resolvent estimate for an associated non-selfadjoint operator as well as an estimate on the return to equilibrium. This is done using a scaling argument and non-semiclassical hypocoercive estimate.
The Boltzmann-Enskog equation for a hard sphere gas is known to have so called microscopic solutions, i.e., solutions of the form of time-evolving empirical measures of a finite number of hard spheres. However, the precise mathematical meaning of these solutions should be discussed, since the formal substitution of empirical measures into the equation is not well-defined. Here we give a rigorous mathematical meaning to the microscopic solutions to the Boltzmann-Enskog equation by means of a suitable series representation.
This paper presents a numerical approximation technique for the Boltzmann equation based on a moment system approximation in velocity dependence and a discontinuous Galerkin finite-element approximation in position dependence. The closure relation for the moment systems derives from minimization of a suitable ϕ-divergence. This divergence-based closure yields a hierarchy of tractable symmetric hyperbolic moment systems that retain the fundamental structural properties of the Boltzmann equation. The resulting combined discontinuous Galerkin moment method corresponds to a Galerkin approximation …
The notion of distance between a global Maxwellian function and an arbitrary solution $f$ (with the same total density $ρ$ at the fixed moment $t$) of Boltzmann equation is introduced. In this way we essentially generalize the important Kullback-Leibler distance, which was used before. Namely, we generalize it for the spatially inhomogeneous case. An extremal problem to find a solution of the Boltzmann equation, such that $\dist\{M,f\}$ is minimal in the class of solutions with the fixed values of energy and of $n$ moments, is solved. The cases of the classical and quantum (for Fermi and Bose …
