We study the problem of scheduling equal-length jobs with release times and deadlines, where the objective is to maximize the number of completed jobs. Preemptions are not allowed. In Graham's notation, the problem is described as 1|r_j;p_j=p|\sum U_j. We give the following results: (1) We show that the often cited algorithm by Carlier from 1981 is not correct. (2) We give an algorithm for this problem with running time O(n^5).
We consider the problem of scheduling jobs with equal lengths on uniform parallel batch machines with non-identical capacities where each job can only be processed on a specified subset of machines called its processing set. For the case of equal release times, we give efficient exact algorithms for various objective functions. We study the fundamental problem of scheduling bidirectional traffic along a path composed of multiple segments. The main feature of the problem is that jobs traveling in the same direction can be scheduled in quick succession on a segment, while jobs in opposing directions cannot cross a segment at the same time. We show that this tradeoff makes the problem significantly harder than the related flow shop problem, by proving that it is NP-hard even for identical jobs. Given n jobs with release dates, deadlines and processing times we consider the problem of scheduling them on m parallel machines so as to minimize the total energy consumed. Machines can enter a sleep state and they consume no energy in this state. Each machine requires Q units of energy to awaken from the sleep state and in its active state the machine can process jobs and consumes a unit of energy per unit time. We allow for preemption and migration of jobs and provide the first constant approximation algorithm for this problem.

The following online bin packing problem is considered: Items with integer sizes are given and variable sized bins arrive online. A bin must be used if there is still an item remaining which fits in it when the bin arrives. The goal is to minimize the total size of all the bins used. Previously, a lower bound of 5/4 on the competitive ratio of this problem was achieved using jobs of size S and 2S-1. For these item sizes and maximum bin size 4S-3, we obtain asymptotically matching upper and lower bounds, which vary depending on the ratio of the number of small jobs to the number of large jobs.
