We consider linear systems arising from the use of the finite element method for solving scalar linear elliptic problems. Our main result is that these linear systems, which are symmetric and positive semidefinite, are well approximated by symmetric diagonally dominant matrices. Our framework for defining matrix approximation is support theory. Significant graph theoretic work has already been developed in the support framework for preconditioners in the diagonally dominant case, and in particular it is known that such systems can be solved with iterative methods in nearly linear time. Thus, our approximation result implies that these graph theoretic techniques can also solve a class of finite element problems in nearly linear time. We show that the support number bounds, which control the number of iterations in the preconditioned iterative solver, depend on mesh quality measures but not on the problem size or shape of the domain.
We propose a preconditioner to accelerate the convergence of the GMRES iterative method for solving the system of linear equations obtained from discretize-then-optimize approach applied to optimal control problems constrained by a partial differential equation. Eigenvalue distribution of the preconditioned matrix as well as its eigenvectors are discussed. Numerical results of the proposed preconditioner are compared with several existing preconditioners to show its efficiency.

This paper investigates a type of fast and flexible preconditioners to solve multilinear system $\mathcal{A}\textbf{x}^{m-1}=\textbf{b}$ with $\mathcal{M}$-tensor $\mathcal{A}$ and obtains some important convergent theorems about preconditioned Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel and SOR type iterative methods. The main results theoretically prove that the preconditioners can accelerate the convergence of iterations. Numerical examples are presented to reverify the efficiency of the proposed preconditioned methods.

Using the framework of operator or Caldéron preconditioning, uniform preconditioners are constructed for elliptic operators of order $2s \in [0,2]$ discretized with continuous finite (or boundary) elements. The cost of the preconditioner is the cost of the application an elliptic opposite order operator discretized with discontinuous or continuous finite elements on the same mesh, plus minor cost of linear complexity. Herewith the construction of a so-called dual mesh is avoided.
Discretization of flow in fractured porous media commonly lead to large systems of linear equations that require dedicated solvers. In this work, we develop an efficient linear solver and its practical implementation for mixed-dimensional scalar elliptic problems. We design an effective preconditioner based on approximate block factorization and algebraic multigrid techniques. Numerical results on benchmarks with complex fracture structures demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed linear solver and its robustness with respect to different physical and discretization parameters.

We introduce a domain decomposition-based nonlinear preconditioned iteration for solving nonlinear, nonsmooth elliptic optimal control problems, with a nonlinear reaction term, $L^1$ regularization and box constraints on the control function. The method is obtained by applying semismooth Newton to the fixed-point equation of the parallel optimized Schwarz iteration. As a proof of concept, numerical experiments are performed on two subdomains, as well as on a multi-subdomain test case. The results show that it is possible to obtain substantial improvements in robustness and efficiency with the …
In this paper we propose to use model reduction techniques for speeding up the diagonalization-based parallel-in-time (ParaDIAG) preconditioner, for iteratively solving all-at-once systems from evolutionary PDEs. In particular, we use the reduced basis method to seek a low-dimensional approximation to the sequence of complex-shifted systems arising from Step-(b) of the ParaDIAG preconditioning procedure. Different from the standard reduced order modeling that uses the separation of offline and online stages, we have to build the reduced order model (ROM) online for the considered systems at ea…

We construct an algebraic multigrid (AMG) based preconditioner for the reduced Hessian of a linear-quadratic optimization problem constrained by an elliptic partial differential equation. While the preconditioner generalizes a geometric multigrid preconditioner introduced in earlier works, its construction relies entirely on a standard AMG infrastructure built for solving the forward elliptic equation, thus allowing for it to be implemented using a variety of AMG methods and standard packages. Our analysis establishes a clear connection between the quality of the preconditioner and the AMG met…
Randomized methods are becoming increasingly popular in numerical linear algebra. However, few attempts have been made to use them in developing preconditioners. Our interest lies in solving large-scale sparse symmetric positive definite linear systems of equations where the system matrix is preordered to doubly bordered block diagonal form (for example, using a nested dissection ordering). We investigate the use of randomized methods to construct high quality preconditioners. In particular, we propose a new and efficient approach that employs Nyström's method for computing low rank approximat…
This paper describes a massively parallel algebraic multigrid method based on non-smoothed aggregation. It is especially suited for solving heterogeneous elliptic problems as it uses a greedy heuristic algorithm for the aggregation that detects changes in the coefficients and prevents aggregation across them. Using decoupled aggregation on each process with data agglomeration onto fewer processes on the coarse level, it weakly scales well in terms of both total time to solution and time per iteration to nearly 300,000 cores. Because of simple piecewise constant interpolation between the levels…
We derive a linearized rotating shallow water system modeling tides, which can be discretized by mixed finite elements. Unlike previous models, this model allows for multiple layers stratified by density. Like the single-layer case~\cite{kirby2021preconditioning} a weighted-norm preconditioner gives a (nearly) parameter-robust method for solving the resulting linear system at each time step, but the all-to-all coupling between the layers in the model poses a significant challenge to efficiency. Neglecting the inter-layer coupling gives a preconditioner that degrades rapidly as the number of la…
This paper deals with solving a class of three-by-three block saddle point problems. The systems are solved by preconditioning techniques. Based on an iterative method, we construct a block upper triangular preconditioner. The convergence of the presented method is studied in details. Finally, some numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed preconditioner over some existing ones.
Solving the normal equations corresponding to large sparse linear least-squares problems is an important and challenging problem. For very large problems, an iterative solver is needed and, in general, a preconditioner is required to achieve good convergence. In recent years, a number of preconditioners have been proposed. These are largely serial and reported results demonstrate that none of the commonly used preconditioners for the normal equations matrix is capable of solving all sparse least-squares problems. Our interest is thus in designing new preconditioners for the normal equations th…
We consider effective preconditioners for solving Laplacians of general weighted graphs. Theoretically, spectral sparsifiers (SSs) provide preconditioners of optimal computational complexity. However, they are not easy to use for real-world applications due to the implementation complications. Multigrid (MG) methods, on the contrary, are computationally efficient but lack of theoretical justifications. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we adopt ideas of MG and SS methods and proposed preconditioners that can be used in practice with theoretical guarantees. We expand the original g…
We study the performance of a new block preconditioner for a class of $3\times3$ block saddle point problems which arise from finite element methods for solving time-dependent Maxwell equations and some other practical problems. We also estimate the lower and upper bounds of eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix. \cred{Finally, we examine our new preconditioner to accelerate the convergence speed of the GMRES method which shows the effectiveness of the preconditioner.
In this paper, we investigate the preconditioned AOR method for solving linear systems. We study two general preconditioners and propose some lower triangular, upper triangular and combination preconditioners. For $A$ being an L-matrix, a nonsingular M-matrix, an irreducible L-matrix and an irreducible nonsingular M-matrix, four types of comparison theorems are presented, respectively. They contain a general comparison result, a strict comparison result and two Stein-Rosenberg type comparison results. Our theorems include and are better than almost all known corresponding results.
