For a connected orientable closed surface $(Σ,g)$ of genus $G$ with Anosov geodesic flow, we show the existence of an open subset $U_g$ of finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the fundamental group of its unit tangent bundle, whose complement has complex codimension at least one and such that for any $ρ\in U_g$, the twisted Ruelle zeta function $ζ_{g,ρ}(s)$ vanishes at $s=0$ to order ${\rm dim}(ρ)(2G-2)$ if $ρ$ factors through $π_1(Σ)$, and does not vanish otherwise. In the second case, we show that $ζ_{g,ρ}(0)$ is given by the Reidemeister--Turaev torsion, thus extending Fried's conjecture to a generic set of acyclic (but not necessarily unitary) representations. We also show that the order of vanishing of the untwisted zeta function is constant for an open and dense subset of Anosov metrics in the connected component of a hyperbolic $3$-metric. Our proofs rely on computing the dimensions of the spaces of generalized twisted Pollicott--Ruelle resonant states at zero.
Pollicott-Ruelle resonances for chaotic flows are the characteristic frequencies of correlations. They are typically defined as eigenvalues of the generator of the flow acting on specially designed functional spaces. We show that these resonances can be computed as viscosity limits of eigenvalues of second order elliptic operators. These eigenvalues are the characteristic frequencies of correlations for a stochastically perturbed flow.
We present new methods to construct a Ruelle-Pollicott spectrum for the geodesic flow on manifolds with strictly negative curvature and a finite number of hyperbolic cusps.
We give a sharp polynomial bound on the number of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances. These resonances, which are complex numbers in the lower half-plane, appear in expansions of correlations for Anosov contact flows. The bounds follow the tradition of upper bounds on the number of scattering resonances and improve a recent bound of Faure-Sjöstrand. The complex scaling method used in scattering theory is replaced by an approach using exponentially weighted spaces introduced by Helffer-Sjöstrand in scattering theory and by Faure-Sjöstrand in the theory of Anosov flows.
The kinetic Brownian motion on the cosphere bundle of a Riemannian manifold $\mathbb{M}$ is a stochastic process that models the geodesic equation perturbed by a random white force of size $\varepsilon$. When $\mathbb{M}$ is compact with negative curvature we show that the $L^2$-spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of this process converges to the Pollicott--Ruelle resonances of $\mathbb{M}$ as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$.
We define Pollicott-Ruelle resonances for geodesic flows on noncompact asymptotically hyperbolic negatively curved manifolds, as well as for more general open hyperbolic systems related to Axiom A flows. These resonances are the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent of the generator of the flow and they describe decay of classical correlations. As an application, we show that the Ruelle zeta function extends meromorphically to the entire complex plane.
We show that all generalized Pollicott-Ruelle resonant states of a topologically transitiv $C^\infty$-Anosov flow with an arbitrary $C^\infty$ potential, have full support.
Given a closed orientable hyperbolic manifold of dimension $\neq 3$ we prove that the multiplicity of the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance of the geodesic flow on perpendicular one-forms at zero agrees with the first Betti number of the manifold. Additionally, we prove that this equality is stable under small perturbations of the Riemannian metric and simultaneous small perturbations of the geodesic vector field within the class of contact vector fields. For more general perturbations we get bounds on the multiplicity of the resonance zero on all one-forms in terms of the first and zeroth Betti numb…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues and eigenmodes of the Witten Laplacian on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. We show that they converge to the Pollicott-Ruelle spectrum of the corresponding gradient flow acting on appropriate anisotropic Sobolev spaces. In particular, our results relate the approach of Laudenbach and Harvey--Lawson to Morse theory using currents, which was discussed in previous work of the authors, and Witten's point of view based on semiclassical analysis and tunneling. As an application of our methods, we also construct a natural family o…
We study the spectrum of transfer operators associated to various dynamical systems. Our aim is to obtain precise information on the discrete spectrum. To this end we propose a unitary approach. We consider various settings where new information can be obtained following different branches along the proposed path. These settings include affine expanding Markov maps, uniformly expanding Markov maps, non-uniformly expanding or simply monotone maps, hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We believe this approach could be greatly generalized.

We show that the Ruelle zeta function for a negatively curved oriented surface vanishes at zero to the order given by the absolute value of the Euler characteristic. This result was previously known only in constant curvature.
We consider Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds preserving a volume form $Ω$. Following Dyatlov and Zworski (2017) we study spaces of invariant distributions with values in the bundle of exterior forms whose wavefront set is contained in the dual of the unstable bundle. Our first result computes the dimension of these spaces in terms of the first Betti number of the manifold, the cohomology class $[ι_{X}Ω]$ (where $X$ is the infinitesimal generator of the flow) and the helicity. These dimensions coincide with the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance multiplicities under the assumption of $\textit{semisim…
The response of a low-frequency mode of climate variability, El Ni{ñ}o-Southern Oscillation, to stochastic forcing is studied in a high-dimensional model of intermediate complexity, the fully-coupled Cane-Zebiak model [ZC87], from the spectral analysis of Markov operators governing the decay of correlations and resonances in the power spectrum. Noise-induced oscillations excited before a supercritical Hopf bifurcation are examined by means of complex resonances , the reduced Ruelle-Pollicott (RP) resonances, via a numerical application of the reduction approach of the first part of this contri…
In this article we prove an important inequality regarding the Ruelle operator in hyperbolic flows. This was already proven briefly by Mark Pollicott and Richard Sharp in a low dimensional case, but we present a clearer proof of the inequality, filling in gaps and explaining the ideas in more detail, and extend the inequality to higher dimensional flows. This inequality is necessary to prove a proposition about the analyticity of Ruelle zeta functions.
We show that for a generic conformal metric perturbation of a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold $Σ$ with Betti number $b_1$, the order of vanishing of the Ruelle zeta function at zero equals $4-b_1$, while in the hyperbolic case it is equal to $4-2b_1$. This is in contrast to the 2-dimensional case where the order of vanishing is a topological invariant. The proof uses the microlocal approach to dynamical zeta functions, giving a geometric description of generalized Pollicott-Ruelle resonant differential forms at 0 in the hyperbolic case and using first variation for the perturbation. To show that…
For a compact Riemannian locally symmetric space $\mathcal M$ of rank one and an associated vector bundle $\mathbf V_τ$ over the unit cosphere bundle $S^\ast\mathcal M$, we give a precise description of those classical (Pollicott-Ruelle) resonant states on $\mathbf V_τ$ that vanish under covariant derivatives in the Anosov-unstable directions of the chaotic geodesic flow on $S^\ast\mathcal M$. In particular, we show that they are isomorphically mapped by natural pushforwards into generalized common eigenspaces of the algebra of invariant differential operators $D(G,σ)$ on compatible associated…
We prove a local trace formula for Anosov flows. It relates Pollicott--Ruelle resonances to the periods of closed orbits. As an application, we show that the counting function for resonances in a sufficiently wide strip cannot have a sublinear growth. In particular, for any Anosov flow there exist strips with infinitely many resonances.
Transfer operators and Ruelle zeta functions for super-continuous functions on one-sided topological Markov shifts are considered. For every super-continuous function, we construct a Banach space on which the associated transfer operator is compact. Using this Banach space, we establish the trace formula and spectral representation of Ruelle zeta functions for a certain class of super-continuous functions. Our results include, as a special case, the classical trace formula and spectral representation for the class of locally constant functions.
We study the limit distribution of eigenvalues of a Ruelle operator (which is also called the Thurston pushforward operator) for the dynamical system $z \mapsto z^2+c$ when $c<-2$ and tends to $-2$.
A theory of Ruelle-Pollicott (RP) resonances for stochastic differential systems is presented. These resonances are defined as the eigenvalues of the generator (Kolmogorov operator) of a given stochastic system. By relying on the theory of Markov semigroups, decomposition formulas of correlation functions and power spectral densities (PSDs) in terms of RP resonances are then derived. These formulas describe, for a broad class of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), how the RP resonances characterize the decay of correlations as well as the signal's oscillatory components manifested by pea…
The purpose of this paper is to give a short microlocal proof of the meromorphic continuation of the Ruelle zeta function for C^\infty Anosov flows. More general results have been recently proved by Giulietti-Liverani-Pollicott [arXiv:1203.0904] but our approach is different and is based on the study of the generator on the flow as a semiclassical differential operator.
We propose a field-theoretic interpretation of Ruelle zeta function, and show how it can be seen as the partition function for $BF$ theory when an unusual gauge fixing condition on contact manifolds is imposed. This suggests an alternative rephrasing of a conjecture due to Fried on the equivalence between Ruelle zeta function and analytic torsion, in terms of homotopies of Lagrangian submanifolds.
If X is a contact Anosov vector field on a smooth compact manifold M and V is a smooth function on M, it is known that the differential operator A=-X+V has some discrete spectrum called Ruelle-Pollicott resonances in specific Sobolev spaces. We show that for |Im(z)| large the eigenvalues of A are restricted to vertical bands and in the gaps between the bands, the resolvent of A is bounded uniformly with respect to |Im(z)|. In each isolated band the density of eigenvalues is given by the Weyl law. In the first band, most of the eigenvalues concentrate of the vertical line Re(z)=< D >, the space…
The Ruelle zeta-function of the geodesic flow on the sphere bundle $S(X)$ of an even-dimensional compact locally symmetric space $X$ of rank $1$ is a meromorphic function in the complex plane that satisfies a functional equation relating its values in $s$ and $-s$. The multiplicity of its singularity in the central critical point $s = 0$ only depends on the hyperbolic structure of the flow and can be calculated by integrating a secondary characteristic class canonically associated to the flow- invariant foliations of $S(X)$ for which a representing differential form is given.
In this paper we consider the transfer operator approach to the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions associated to continued fractions transformations and the geodesic flow on the full modular surface. We extend the results by Ruelle and Mayer to two-variable zeta functions, $ζ(q,z)$ and $Z(q,z)$. The $q$ variable plays the role of the inverse temperature and the introduction of the "geometric variable" $z$ is essential in the tentative to provide a general approach, based on the Farey map, to the correspondence between the analytic properties of the zeta functions themselves, the spectral proper…
We study the Ruelle zeta function at zero for negatively curved oriented surfaces with boundary. At zero, the zeta function has a zero and its multiplicity is shown to be determined by the Euler characteristic of the surface. This is shown by considering certain Ruelle resonances and identifying their multiplicity with dimensions of the relative cohomology of the surface.
For Axiom A flows on basic sets satisfying certain additional conditions we prove strong spectral estimates for Ruelle transfer operators similar to these of Dolgopyat (1998) for geodesic flows on compact surfaces (for general potentials)and transitive Anosov flows on compact manifolds with C^1 jointly non-integrable horocycle foliations (for the Sinai-Bowen-Ruelle potential). Here we deal with general potentials. As is now well known, such results have deep implications in some related areas, e.g. in studying analytic properties of Ruelle zeta functions and partial differential operators, clo…
We prove that, for a Ruelle-expanding map, the zeta function is rational and the topological entropy is equal to the exponential growth rate of the periodic points.
These are notes from a course given in Orsay in 2002 explaining carefully the Milnor-Thurston kneading determinant approach to dynamical zeta functions as interpreted by Baladi and Ruelle (Invent. Math. 1996). We make them available in view of the recent renewed interest in this approach. (see arXiv:1501.00294, The Milnor-Thurston determinant and the Ruelle transfer operator, HH Rugh, Comm. Math. Phys. 342 (2016) 603-614, and arXiv:1407.5313, Kneading with weights, HH Rugh, Lei Tan, J. Fractal Geom. 2 (2015) 339-375)
This errata fixes a mistake in the part of Giulietti, P.; Liverani, C.; Pollicott, M. Anosov flows and dynamical zeta functions. Ann. of Math. (2) {\bf 178} (2013), no. 2, 687--773, which proves a spectral gap for contact Anosov flows with respect to the measure of maximal entropy (Section 7). However, the first part of the paper, in which it is proved that the Ruelle zeta function is meromorphic, is unaffected.
In this article we prove meromorphic continuation of weighted zeta functions in the framework of open hyperbolic systems by using the meromorphically continued restricted resolvent of Dyatlov and Guillarmou (2016). We obtain a residue formula proving equality between residues of weighted zetas and invariant Ruelle distributions. We combine this equality with results of Guillarmou, Hilgert and Weich (2021) in order to relate the residues to Patterson-Sullivan distributions. Finally we provide proof-of-principle results concerning the numerical calculation of invariant Ruelle distributions for 3…
The Kac-Baker model describes a 1-dim. classical lattice spin system with exponentially fast decaying two body interaction. The model was introduced by M. Kac and G. Baker to investigate the phenomenon of phase transition in systems with weak long-range interactions like van der Waals gas. Ruelle's dynamical zeta function for this model can be expressed in terms of Fredholm determinants of two transfer operators and hence is a meromorphic function. One of the two operators, found by M. Kac, is an integral operator with symmetric kernel acting in the Hilbert space of square integrable functions…
This paper describes new results on the growth and zeros of the Ruelle zeta function for the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map. It is shown that the zeta function is bounded by $\exp(C_K |s|^δ)$ in strips $|\Re s| \leq K$, where $δ$ is the dimension of the Julia set. This leads to bounds on the number of zeros in strips (interpreted as the Pollicott-Ruelle resonances of this dynamical system). An upper bound on the number of zeros in polynomial regions $\{|\Re s | \leq |\Im s|^α\}$ is given, followed by weaker lower bound estimates in strips $\{\Re s > -C, |\Im s|\leq r\}$, and logarithmi…
We show that the Ruelle zeta function of any smooth Axiom A flow with orientable stable/unstable spaces has a meromorphic continuation to the entire complex plane. The proof uses the meromorphic continuation result of [arXiv:1410.5516] together with the work of Conley-Easton and [arXiv:1711.10059] which imply that every basic hyperbolic set can be put into the framework of [arXiv:1410.5516].
For Anosov flows on compact Riemann manifolds we study the rate of decay along the flow of diameters of balls $B^s(x,\ep)$ on local stable manifolds at Lyapunov regular points $x$. We prove that this decay rate is similar for all sufficiently small values of $ε> 0$. From this and the main result in \cite{kn:St1}, we derive strong spectral estimates for Ruelle transfer operators for contact Anosov flows with Lipschitz local stable holonomy maps. These apply in particular to geodesic flows on compact locally symmetric manifolds of strictly negative curvature. As is now well known, such spectral …
In this paper we give an overview over some aspects of the modern mathematical theory of Ruelle resonances for chaotic, i.e. uniformly hyperbolic, dynamical systems and their implications in physics. First we recall recent developments in the mathematical theory of resonances, in particular how invariant Ruelle distributions arise as residues of weighted zeta functions. Then we derive a correspondence between weighted and semiclassical zeta functions in the setting of negatively curved surfaces. Combining this with results of Hilgert, Guillarmou and Weich yields a high frequency interpretation…
For $C^2$ weak mixing Axiom A flow $ϕ_t: M \longrightarrow M$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ and a basic set $Λ$ for $ϕ_t$ we consider the Ruelle transfer operator $L_{f - s τ+ z g}$, where $f$ and $g$ are real-valued Hölder functions on $Λ$, $τ$ is the roof function and $s, z$ are complex parameters. Under some assumptions about $ϕ_t$ we establish estimates for the iterations of this Ruelle operator in the spirit of the estimates for operators with one complex parameter (see \cite{D}, \cite{St2}, \cite{St3}). Two cases are covered: (i) for arbitrary Hölder $f,g$ when $|\Im z| \leq B |\Im s|^μ$ …
We study the Ruelle dynamical determinant of a real analytic diffeomorphism on a compact surface, assuming that the tangent space over the nonwandering set admits a dominated splitting. Combining previous work of Pujals and Sambarino with methods introduced by Rugh, we show that the determinant is either entire or holomorphic in a (possibly multiply) slit plane.
We show an equality between the analytic torsion and the absolute value at the zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function on a closed odd dimensional locally symmetric space twisted by an acyclic flat vector bundle obtained by the restriction of a representation of the underlying Lie group. This generalises author's previous result for unitarily flat vector bundles, and the results of Bröcker, Müller, and Wotzke on closed hyperbolic manifolds.
We study the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions for $\Cs^r$ Anosov flows, $r > 2$, on a compact smooth manifold. We prove several results, the most remarkable being: (a) for $\Cs^\infty$ flows the zeta function is meromorphic on the entire complex plane; (b) for contact flows satisfying a bunching condition (e.g. geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature better than $\frac 19$-pinched) the zeta function has a pole at the topological entropy and is analytic in a strip to its left; (c) under the same hypotheses as in (b) we obtain sharp results on the number of periodic orbits. Our argume…
We introduce a Milnor metric on the determinant line of the cohomology of the underlying closed manifold with coefficients in a flat vector bundle, by means of interactions between the fixed points and the closed orbits of a Morse-Smale flow. This allows us to generalise the notion of the absolute value at zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function, even in the case where this value is not well defined in the classical sense. We give a formula relating the Milnor metric and the Ray-Singer metric. An essential ingredient of our proof is Bismut-Zhang's Theorem.
In this work we study strong spectral properties of Ruelle transfer operators related to a large family of Gibbs measures for contact Anosov flows. The ultimate aim is to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables with respect to a very general class of Gibbs measures. The approach invented in 1997 by Dolgopyat \cite{D1} and further developed in \cite{St2} is substantially refined here, allowing to deal with much more general situations than before, although we still restrict ourselves to the uniformly hyperbolic case. A rather general procedure is established which pro…
We point out analogies between (a) the explicit formulas in analytic number theory and transversal index theory, (b) Lichtenbaum's recent conjectures on special values of Hasse-Weil zeta functions and a formula for special values of Ruelle zeta functions, (c) work of Cramer on the zeroes of the Riemann zeta function and a result of Chazarain on the trace of a wave operator. These analogies suggest certain problems in the analysis on foliated spaces. The paper is mostly a review of previous work but the ideas concerning (c) are new.
