This is a text written for the Ennio De Giorgi Colloquio volume. It covers analogies between algebraic number theory and knot theory, analogies between analytic number theory and certain dynamical systems, and a report on our construction of dynamical systems for arithmetic schemes which realize some of these analogies.

Analogies between group actions on 3-manifolds and number fields

Mazur, Kapranov, Reznikov, and others developed ``Arithmetic Topology,'' a theory describing some surprising analogies between 3-dimensional topology and number theory, which can be summarized by saying that knots are like prime numbers. We extend their work by proving several formulas concerning branched coverings of 3-manifolds and extensions of number fields and observe that these formulas are almost identical, via the dictionary of arithmetic topology. Archimedean cohomology revisited

Archimedean cohomology provides a cohomological interpretation for the calculation of the local L-factors at archimedean places as zeta regularized determinant of a log of Frobenius. In this paper we investigate further the properties of the Lefschetz and log of monodromy operators on this cohomology. In recent years Lichtenbaum has conjectured a description for the special values of Hasse--Weil zeta functions in terms of ``Weil-étale cohomology''. In earlier papers we studied a class of foliated dynamical systems which had some similarities with arithmetic schemes. This monograph is intended to be considered as my habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis; because of that and as everything has already appeared in English, it is performed exclusively in Russian.
