About 40 years ago Jonathan and Peter Borwein discovered the series identity $$ \sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{(-1)^n(6n)!}{(3n)!(n!)^3} \frac{(A+nB)}{C^{n+1/2}} = \frac{1}{12π} $$ where \begin{align*} A&=1657145277365+212175710912\sqrt{61},\cr B&=107578229802750+13773980892672\sqrt{61},\cr C&=\left(5280(236674+30303\sqrt{61})\right)^3 \end{align*} which adds roughly 25 digits of accuracy per term. They noted that if each of the quadratic irrationals $A$, $B$ and $C$ is replaced by their conjugates, that is, each number $a+b\sqrt{61}$ is changed to $a-b\sqrt{61}$, then the resulting series also converges to a rational multiple of $1/π$. They gave several other examples of quadratic irrational series for $1/π$, and noted that the conjugate series converges to another rational multiple of $1/π$ or in some cases the conjugate series diverges.
The purpose of this work is to provide an explanation and classification of such series. Our classification includes Ramanujan's 17 original series, as well as series of the Borweins, Chudnovskys, Sato and others. We extend the classification to genus-zero subgroups $Γ_0(\ell)+$, that is, for each $\ell \in \big\{1,2,3,\ldots,36,38,39,41,42,44,45,46,47,49,50,51,54,55,56,59,60,62,66,69,70, 71,78,87,92,94,95,105,110,119\big\}$ we calculate the Hauptmoduls, associated weight two modular forms, and the corresponding rational and real quadratic irrational series for $1/π$.
The classification reveals many interrelations among the different series. For example, we show that the Borweins' series above, and its conjugate, are equivalent by hypergeometric transformation formulas to the level~7 rational series $$ \sum_{n=0}^\infty \left\{\sum_{j=0}^n {n \choose j}^2{2j \choose n} {n+j \choose j}\right\} (11895n+1286) \frac{(-1)^n}{22^{3n+3}} = \frac{1}{π\sqrt{7}}. $$
In this paper, we prove supercongruence relations for truncated $N$-tuple sums of basic hypergeometric series. As an application, we give double, triple, and quadruple sum analogs of some Ramanujan-type supercongruences.
In this note, by making use of a known hypergeometric series identity, I prove two Ramanujan-type series for the Catalan's constant. The convergence rate of these central binomial series surpasses those of all known similar series, including a classical formula by Ramanujan and a recent formula by Lupas. Interestingly, this suggests that an Apéry-like irrationality proof could be found for this constant.
Guillera and Zudilin proved three "divergent" Ramanujan-type supercongruences by means of the Wilf-Zeilberger algorithmic technique. In this paper, we prove $q$-analogues of two of them via the $q$-WZ method. Additionally, we give $q$-analogues of two related congruence of Sun, one is confirmed and the other is conjectural.
The hypergeometric formulae designed by Ramanujan more than a century ago for efficient approximation of $π$, Archimedes' constant, remain an attractive object of arithmetic study. In this note we discuss some $q$-analogues of Ramanujan-type evaluations and of related supercongruences.
We give $q$-analogues of the following two Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/π$: \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty (6k+1)\frac{(\frac{1}{2})_k^3}{k!^3 4^k} =\frac{4}π \quad\text{and}\quad \sum_{k=0}^\infty (-1)^k(6k+1)\frac{(\frac{1}{2})_k^3}{k!^3 8^k } =\frac{2\sqrt{2}}π. \end{align*} Our proof is based on two $q$-WZ pairs found by the first author in his earlier work.
In this short note, we show an analogue of one of Alladi's and Dawsey's formulas with respect to the Ramanujan sum $c_n(m)$ for $m\geq1$. Their formulas may be viewed as the case $m=1$ in our result.
In this paper, we consider a general form of the analogue of Ramanujan's sum in the ring of polynomials over a finite field. We first prove some multiplicative properties of such functions before considering their finite Fourier series and some specific examples. In the end, we also prove a result about the Dirichlet series of such functions.
A comprehensive study of the generalized Lambert series $\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{n^{N-2h}\exp{(-an^{N}x)}}{1-\exp{(-n^{N}x)}}, 0<a\leq 1,\ x>0$, $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and $h\in\mathbb{Z}$, is undertaken. Two of the general transformations of this series that we obtain here lead to two-parameter generalizations of Ramanujan's famous formula for $ζ(2m+1)$, $m>0$ and the transformation formula for $\logη(z)$. Numerous important special cases of our transformations are derived. An identity relating $ζ(2N+1), ζ(4N+1),\cdots, ζ(2Nm+1)$ is obtained for $N$ odd and $m\in\mathbb{N}$. Certain t…
We introduce new analogues of the Ramanujan sums, denoted by $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$, associated with unitary divisors, and obtain results concerning the expansions of arithmetic functions of several variables with respect to the sums $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$. We apply these results to certain functions associated with $σ^*(n)$ and $ϕ^*(n)$, representing the unitary sigma function and unitary phi function, respectively.
Using the $q$-Wilf--Zeilberger method and a $q$-analogue of a "divergent" Ramanujan-type supercongruence, we give several $q$-supercongruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. One of them is a $q$-analogue of a supercongruence recently proved by Wang: for any prime $p>3$, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1} (3k-1)\frac{(\frac{1}{2})_k (-\frac{1}{2})_k^2 }{k!^3}4^k\equiv p-2p^3 \pmod{p^4}, $$ where $(a)_k=a(a+1)\cdots (a+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol.
A continued fraction $v(τ)$ of Ramanujan is evaluated at certain arguments in the field $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$), in which the ideal $(2) = \wp_2 \wp_2'$ is a product of two prime ideals. These values of $v(τ)$ are shown to generate the inertia field of $\wp_2$ or $\wp_2'$ in an extended ring class field over the field $K$. The conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of these same values, together with $0, -1 \pm \sqrt{2}$, are shown to form the exact set of periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $\hat F(x)$, independent of $d$. These are analogues of similar resul…
Suppose that $θ$ is irrational. Then almost all elements $ν\in {\mathbb Z}[θ]$ that may be written as a $k$-fold product of the shifted integers $n+θ$ $(n\in {\mathbb N})$ are thus represented essentially uniquely.
A Ramanujan-type formula involving the squares of odd zeta values is obtained. The crucial part in obtaining such a result is to conceive the correct analogue of the Eisenstein series involved in Ramanujan's formula for $ζ(2m+1)$. The formula for $ζ^{2}(2m+1)$ is then generalized in two different directions, one, by considering the generalized divisor function $σ_z(n)$, and the other, by studying a more general analogue of the aforementioned Eisenstein series, consisting of one more parameter $N$. A number of important special cases are derived from the first generalization. For example, we ob…
In a recent paper with Sprang and Zudilin, the following result was proved: if $a$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon>0$, then at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log a}{\log \log a}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between $3$ and $a$ are irrational. This improves on the Ball-Rivoal theorem, that provides only $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log 2} \log a$ such irrational values -- but with a stronger property: they are linearly independent over the rationals. In the present paper we generalize this recent result to both $L$-functions of Dirichlet characters and Hurwitz zeta…
Bhoria, Eyyunni and Maji recently obtained a four-parameter $q$-series identity which gives as special cases not only all five entries of Ramanujan on pages 354 and 355 of his second notebook but also allows them to obtain an analytical proof of a result of Bressoud and Subbarao. Here, we obtain a finite analogue of their identity which naturally gives finite analogues of Ramanujan's results. Using one of these finite analogues, we deduce an identity for a finite sum involving a ${}_2ϕ_1$. This identity is then applied to obtain a generalization of the generating function version of Andrews' f…
In this paper, transformation formulas for a large class of Eisenstein series defined by \[ G(z,s;A_α,B_β;r_{1},r_{2})=\sum\limits_{m,n=-\infty}^{\infty }\ \hspace{-0.19in}^{^{\prime}}\frac{f(αm)f^{\ast}(βn)} {((m+r_{1})z+n+r_{2})^{s}},\text{ }\operatorname{Re}(s)>2,\text{ }\operatorname{Im}(z)>0 \] are investigated for $s=1-r$, $r\in\mathbb{N}$. Here $\left\{ f(n)\right\}$ and $\left\{ f^{\ast}(n)\right\}$, $-\infty<n<\infty$ are sequences of complex numbers with period $k>0$, and $A_α=\left\{ f(αn)\right\} $ and $B_β=\left\{ f^{\ast}(βn)\right\}$, $α,β\in\mathbb{Z}$. Appearing in the transfo…
Ramanujan gave a recurrence relation for the partition function in terms of the sum of the divisor function $σ(n)$. In 1885, J.W. Glaisher considered seven divisor sums closely related to the sum of the divisors function. We develop a calculus to associate a generating function with each of these divisor sums. This yields analogues of Ramanujan's recurrence relation for several partition-theoretic functions as well as $r_k(n)$ and $t_k(n)$, functions counting the number of ways of writing a number as a sum of squares (respectively, triangular) numbers. As by-products of this association, we ob…
By applying multiplicate forms of the Carlitz inverse series relations to the $q$-Pfaff-Saalsch{ü}tz summation theorem, we establish twenty five nonterminating $q$-series identities with several of them serving as $q$-analogues of infinite series expressions for $π$ and $1/π$, including some typical ones discovered by Ramanujan (1914) and Guillera.
We focus on three pages in Ramanujan's lost notebook, pages 336, 335, and 332, in decreasing order of attention. On page 336, Ramanujan proposes two identities, but the formulas are wrong -- each is vitiated by divergent series. We concentrate on only one of the two incorrect "identities", which may have been devised to attack the extended divisor problem. We prove here a corrected version of Ramanujan's claim, which contains the convergent series appearing in it. The convergent series in Ramanujan's faulty claim is similar to one used by G.F. Voronoi, G.H. Hardy, and others in their study of …

In this article, a finite analogue of the generalized sum-of-tails identity of Andrews and Freitas is obtained. We derive several interesting results as special cases of this analogue, in particular, a recent identity of Dixit, Eyyyunni, Maji and Sood. We derive a new extension of Abel's lemma with the help of which we obtain a one-parameter generalization of a sum-of-tails identity of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, an identity of Ramanujan as well as two new results - one for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ and another for the function recently introduced by Andrews and Ballantine. Later we introduce…
