This paper studies structured products of real matrices for which the top Lyapunov exponent can be accessed by reducing the dynamics to an amenable generalization of upper triangular matrices. Exploiting prescribed zero patterns (including block-triangularity and sparse decompositions, conveniently encoded by a directed sparsity graph), we obtain explicit, computable bounds and, in favorable cases, formulas for $γ_1$ by combining deterministic triangular controls with a suitable refinement of the Furstenberg--Kifer lemma for block-triangular products. The estimates apply both to tempered (possibly deterministic) sequences and to stationary ergodic random cocycles under standard integrability. We also discuss applications to perturbation models for linear systems, including low-rank updates, where the reduction converts the problem to lower-dimensional or scalar cocycles.
We provide an example of a Schrödinger cocycle over a mixing Markov shift for which the integrated density of states has a very weak modulus of continuity, close to the log-Hölder lower bound established by W. Craig and B. Simon. This model is based upon a classical example due to Y. Kifer of a random Bernoulli cocycle with zero Lyapunov exponents which is not strongly irreducible. It follows that the Lyapunov exponent of a Bernoulli cocycle near this Kifer example cannot be Hölder or weak-Hölder continuous, thus providing a limitation on the modulus of continuity of the Lyapunov exponent of r…
We consider an m-dimensional analytic cocycle with underlying dynamics given by an irrational translation on the circle. Assuming that the d-dimensional upper left corner of the cocycle is typically large enough, we prove that the d largest Lyapunov exponents associated with this cocycle are bounded away from zero. The result is uniform relative to certain measurements on the matrix blocks forming the cocycle. As an application of this result, we obtain nonperturbative (in the spirit of Sorets-Spencer theorem) positive lower bounds of the nonnegative Lyapunov exponents for various models of ba…
It is known that the Lyapunov exponent of analytic 1-frequency quasiperiodic cocycles is continuous in cocycle and, when the frequency is irrational, jointly in cocycle and frequency. In this paper, we extend a result of Bourgain to show the same continuity result for multifrequency quasiperiodic $M(2,\mathbb{C})$ cocycles. Our corollaries include applications to multifrequency Jacobi cocycles with periodic background potentials.
Given a hyperbolic homeomorphism on a compact metric space, consider the space of linear cocycles over this base dynamics which are Hölder continuous and whose projective actions are partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. We prove that locally near any typical cocycle, the Lyapunov exponents are Hölder continuous functions relative to the uniform topology. This result is obtained as a consequence of a uniform large deviations type estimate in the space of cocycles. As a byproduct of our approach, we also establish other statistical properties for the iterates of such cocycles, namely a centra…
We construct discontinuous point of the Lyapunov exponent of quasiperiodic Schrödinger cocycles in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s>2$. In contrast, the Lyapunov exponent has been proved to be continuous in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s<2$ \cite{klein,cgyz}. This shows that $G^2$ is the transition space for the continuity of the Lyapunov exponent.
An analytic quasi-periodic cocycle is a linear cocycle over a fixed ergodic torus translation of one or several variables, where the fiber action depends analytically on the base point. Consider the space of all such cocycles of any given dimension and endow it with the uniform norm. Assume that the translation vector satisfies a generic Diophantine condition. We prove large deviation type estimates for the iterates of such cocycles, which, moreover, are stable under small perturbations of the cocycle. As a consequence of these uniform estimates, we establish continuity properties of the Lyapu…
Pointwise modulus of continuity of the Lyapunov exponent and integrated density of states for analytic multi-frequency quasiperiodic $M(2, \mathbb{C})$ cocycles
We study ergodic optimization and multifractal behavior of Lyapunov exponents for matrix cocycles. We show the continuity of the entropy spectrum at the boundary of Lyapunov spectrum in the sense that $h_{top}(E(α_{t}))\ \rightarrow h_{top}(E(β(\mathcal{A}))$ for generic cocycles, where $E(α)=\{x\in X: \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{1}{n}\log \|\mathcal{A}^{n}(x)\|=α\}$. We also show that the Lyapunov spectrum is equal to the closure of the set where the entropy spectrum is positive for such cocycles over mixing subshifts of finite type. Moreover, we prove the restricted variational principle…
We consider one-dimensional quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with analytic potentials. In the positive Lyapunov exponent regime, we prove large deviation estimates which lead to optimal Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponents and the integrated density of states, in both small Lyapunov exponent and large coupling regimes. Our results cover all the Diophantine frequencies and some Liouville frequencies.
We provide an explicit lower bound for the the sum of the non-negative Lyapunov exponents for some cocycles related to the Anderson model. In particular, for the Anderson model on a strip of width $ W $ the lower bound is proportional to $ W^{-ε} $, for any $ ε>0 $. This bound is consistent with the fact that the lowest non-negative Lyapunov exponent is conjectured to have a lower bound proportional to $ W^{-1} $.
We study the regularity of the Lyapunov exponent for quasi-periodic cocycles $(T_ω, A)$ where $T_ω$ is an irrational rotation $x\to x+ 2πω$ on $\SS^1$ and $A\in {\cal C}^l(\SS^1, SL(2,\mathbb{R}))$, $0\le l\le \infty$. For any fixed $l=0, 1, 2, \cdots, \infty$ and any fixed $ω$ of bounded-type, we construct $D_{l}\in {\cal C}^l(\SS^1, SL(2,\mathbb{R}))$ such that the Lyapunov exponent is not continuous at $D_{l}$ in ${\cal C}^l$-topology. We also construct such examples in a smaller Schrödinger class.
We prove that the Lyapunov exponent of quasi-periodic cocyles with singularities behaves continuously over the analytic category. We thereby generalize earlier results, where singularities were either excluded completely or constrained by additional hypotheses. Applications are one-parameter families of analytic Jacobi operators, such as extended Harper's model describing crystals subject to external magnetic fields.
One knows that the set of quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent is open and dense in the analytic topology. In this paper, we construct cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent which can be approximated by ones with zero Lyapunov exponent in the space of ${\cal C}^ l$ ($1 \le l\le \infty$) smooth quasi-periodic cocycles. As a consequence, the set of quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles with positive Lyapunov exponent is not ${\cal C}^ l$ open.
We prove that, for semi-invertible linear cocycles, Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures may be approximated by Lyapunov exponents on periodic points.
We show that SL(2,R) cocycles with a positive Lyapunov exponent are dense in all regularity classes and for all non-periodic dynamical systems. For Schrödinger cocycles, we show prevalence of potentials for which the Lyapunov exponent is positive for a dense set of energies.
The Lyapunov exponents of GL(2)-cocycles over Markov shifts depend continuously on the underlying data, that is, on the matrix coefficients and the Markov measure transition probabilities.
In this paper we establish uniform large deviations estimates of exponential type and Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for random non-invertible cocycles with constant rank.
We prove a conjecture of Viana which states that Lyapunov exponents vary continuously when restricted to $GL(2,\mathbb{R})$-valued cocycles over a subshift of finite type which admit invariant holonomies that depend continuously on the cocycle.
We prove that in an open and dense set, Symplectic linear cocycles over time one maps of Anosov flows, have positive Lyapunov exponents for SRB measures.
A theorem of Viana says that almost all cocycles over any hyperbolic system have nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents. In this note we extend this result to cocycles on any noncompact classical semisimple Lie group.
We prove that Sp(2d;R), HSp(2d) and pseudo unitary cocycles with at least one non-zero Lyapunov exponent are dense in all usual regularity classes for non periodic dynamical systems. For Schrödinger operators on the strip, we prove a similar result for density of positive Lyapunov exponents.
We prove that generic fiber-bunched and Hölder continuous linear cocycles over a non-uniformly hyperbolic system endowed with a u-Gibbs measure have simple Lyapunov spectrum. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture proposed by Viana in the context of fiber-bunched cocycles.
This paper is concerned with the study of linear cocycles over uniformly ergodic Markov shifts on a compact space of symbols. We establish the joint Hölder continuity of the maximal Lyapunov exponent as a function of the cocycle and the transition kernel in the vicinity of any irreducible cocycle with simple maximal Lyapunov exponent. Our approach, via Furstenberg's formula, shows the Hölder continuous dependence on the data of the stationary measure of the projective cocycle and in particular provides a more computable Hölder exponent.
We show that linear analytic cocycles where all Lyapunov exponents are negative infinite are nilpotent. For such one-frequency cocycles we show that they can be analytically conjugated to an upper triangular cocycle or a Jordan normal form. As a consequence, an arbitrarily small analytic perturbation leads to distinct Lyapunov exponents. Moreover, in the one-frequency case where the $k$-th Lyapunov exponent is finite and the $k+1$st negative infinite, we obtain a simple criterion for domination in which case there is a splitting into a nilpotent part and an invertible part.
We provide conditions which imply the continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for non-uniformly fiber-bunched cocycles in $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. The main theorem is an extension of the result of Backes, Brown and Butler and gives a partial answer to a conjecture of Marcelo Viana.
We show that for a large class of potential functions and big coupling constant $λ$ the Schrödinger cocycle over the expanding map $x\mapsto bx ~( \text{mod} 1)$ on $\mathbb{T}$ has a Lyapunov exponent $>(\logλ)/4$ for all energies, provided that the integer $b\geq λ^3$.
We consider symplectic cocycles over two classes of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms: having compact center leaves and time one maps of Anosov flows. We prove that the Lyapunov exponents are non-zero in an open and dense set in the Hölder topology.
We consider one-step cocycles of $2 \times 2$ matrices, and we are interested in their Lyapunov-optimizing measures, i.e., invariant probability measures that maximize or minimize a Lyapunov exponent. If the cocycle is dominated, that is, the two Lyapunov exponents are uniformly separated along all orbits, then Lyapunov-optimizing measures always exist, and are characterized by their support. Under an additional hypothesis of nonoverlapping between the cones that characterize domination, we prove that the Lyapunov-optimizing measures have zero entropy. This conclusion certainly fails without t…
We prove the Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponent for quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles with a $C^2$ cos-type potential and any fixed Liouvillean frequency, provided the coupling constant is sufficiently large. Moreover, the Hölder exponent is independent of the frequency and the coupling constant.
The celebrated Oseledets theorem \cite{O}, building over seminal works of Furstenberg and Kesten on random products of matrices and random variables taking values on non-compact semisimple Lie groups \cite{FK,Furstenberg}, ensures that the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-cocycles $(d\geqslant 2)$ over the shift are well defined for all points in a total probability set, ie, a full measure subset for all invariant probabilities. Given a locally constant $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-valued cocycle we are interested both in the set of points on the shift space for which some Lyapun…
We show that the top Lyapunov exponent $λ_+(p)$ , $p = (p_1, \cdots, p_N)$ with $p_i >0$ for each $i$, associated with a random product of quasi-periodic cocycles depends real analytically on the transition probabilities $p$ whenever $λ_+(p)$ is simple. Moreover if the spectrum at $p$ is simple (all Lyapunov exponents having multiplicity one ) then all Lyapunov exponents depend real analytically on $p$.
We show the sum of the first $k$ Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles is an upper semicontinuous function in the $L^p$ topologies, for any $1 \le p \le \infty$ and $k$. This fact, together with a result from Arnold and Cong, implies that the Lyapunov exponents of the $L^p$-generic cocycle, $p<\infty$, are all equal.
We describe all the situations in which the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle has zero Lyapunov exponents. Confirming a conjecture of Forni, Matheus, and Zorich, this only occurs when the cocycle satisfies additional geometric constraints. We also describe the real Lie groups which can appear in the monodromy of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. The number of zero exponents is then as small as possible, given its monodromy.
In this article, we consider the ergodic optimization of the top Lyapunov exponent. We prove that there is a unique maximising measure of top Lyapunov expoent for typical matrix cocyles. By using the results we obtain, we prove that in any non-uniquely ergodic minimal dynamical system, the Lyapunov-irregular points are typical for typical matrix cocyles.
Given a linear cocycle over an ergodic homeomorphism on a compact metric space, we show that the existence of a uniform gap between the $p$-th and $(p+1)$-th Lyapunov exponent on a $C^0$-neighbourhood implies the existence of a dominated splitting of index $p$.
In this paper, we study random Blaschke products, acting on the unit circle, and consider the cocycle of Perron-Frobenius operators acting on Banach spaces of analytic functions on an annulus. We completely describe the Lyapunov spectrum of these cocycles. As a corollary, we obtain a simple random Blaschke product system where the Perron-Frobenius cocycle has infinitely many distinct Lyapunov exponents, but where arbitrarily small natural perturbations cause a complete collapse of the Lyapunov spectrum, except for the exponent 0 associated with the absolutely continuous invariant measure. That…
We give examples of locally constant $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycles over a Bernoulli shift which are discontinuity points for Lyapunov exponents in the Hölder topology and are arbitrarily close to satisfying the fiber bunching inequality. Backes, Brown, and the author have shown that the Lyapunov exponents vary continuously when restricted to the space of fiber bunched Hölder continuous cocycles. Our examples give evidence that this theorem is optimal within certain families of Hölder cocycles.
We establish (i) stability of Lyapunov exponents and (ii) convergence in probability of Oseledets spaces for semi-invertible matrix cocycles, subjected to small random perturbations. The first part extends results of Ledrappier and Young to the semi-invertible setting. The second part relies on the study of evolution of subspaces in the Grassmannian.
We study the geometry of the action of SL(2,R) on the projective line in order to present a new and simpler proof of the Herman-Avila-Bochi formula. This formula gives the average Lyapunov exponent of a class of 1-families of SL(2,R)-cocycles.
In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, it is applied to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles. We show that if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point for suitable frequency and coupling numbers. We also prove that the Lyapunov exponent is Hölder continuous in $E$ on this interval and calculate the expression of its length. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov expo…
We prove that the set of fiber-bunched $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-valued Hölder cocycles with nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents over a volume preserving, accessible and center-bunched partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism is open. Moreover, we present an example showing that this is no longer true if we do not assume acessibility in the base dynamics.
Consider the Banach manifold of real analytic linear cocycles with values in the general linear group of any dimension and base dynamics given by a Diophantine translation on the circle. We prove a precise higher dimensional Avalanche Principle and use it in an inductive scheme to show that the Lyapunov spectrum blocks associated to a gap pattern in the Lyapunov spectrum of such a cocycle are locally Holder continuous. Moreover, we show that all Lyapunov exponents are continuous everywhere in this Banach manifold, irrespective of any gap pattern in their spectra. These results also hold for Di…
In the present paper we give a positive answer to a question posed by Viana on the existence of positive Lyapunov exponents for symplectic cocycles. Actually, we prove that for an open and dense set of Holder symplectic cocycles over a non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism there are non-zero Lyapunov exponents with respect to any invariant ergodic measure with the local product structure.
We devise an abstract, modular scheme to prove continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for a general class of linear cocycles. The main assumption is the availability of appropriate large deviation type (LDT) estimates which are uniform in the data. We provide a modulus of continuity that depends explicitly on the sharpness of the LDT estimate. Our method uses an inductive procedure based on the deterministic, general Avalanche Principle in [4]. The main advantage of this approach, besides the fact that it provides quantitative estimates, is its versatility, as it applies to quasi-periodic cocycl…
It follows from Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem that the Lyapunov-irregular set of points for which the Oseledec averages of a given continuous cocycle diverge has zero measure with respect to any invariant probability measure. In strong contrast, for any dynamical system $f:X\rightarrow X$ with exponential specification property and a H$\ddot{\text{o}}$lder continuous matrix cocycle $A:X\rightarrow G (m,\mathbb{R})$, we show here that if there exist ergodic measures with different Lyapunov spectrum, then the Lyapunov-irregular set of $A$ is residual (i.e., containing a dense $G_δ$ set…
The Lyapunov exponents of locally constant GL(2;C)-cocycles over Bernoulli shifts depend continuously on the cocycle and on the invariant probability. The Oseledets decomposition also depends continuously on the cocycle, in measure.
In this paper we first obtain a formula of averaged Lyapunov exponents for ergodic Szego cocycles via the Herman-Avila-Bochi formula. Then using acceleration, we construct a class of analytic quasi-periodic Szego cocycles with uniformly positive Lyapunov exponents. Finally, a simple application of the main theorem in [Y] allows us to estimate the Lebesgue measure of support of the measure associated to certain class of C1 quasiperiodic 2- sided Verblunsky coefficients. Using the same method, we also recover the [S-S] results for Schrodinger cocycles with nonconstant real analytic potentials an…
In this work, we are interested in the study of the upper Lyapunov exponent $λ^+(θ)$ associated to the periodic family of cocycles defined by $$A_θ(x):=A(x)R_θ,\qquad x\in X,$$ where $A\::\: X\to \mathbb{GL}^+(2,\mathbb{R})$ is a linear cocycle orientation--preser\-ving and $R_θ$ is a rotation of angle $θ\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that if the cocycle $A$ has dominated splitting, then there exists a non empty open set $\mathcal{U}$ of parameters $θ$ such that the cocycle $A_θ$ has dominated splitting and the function $\mathcal{U}\niθ\mapstoλ^+(θ)$ is real analytic and strictly concave. As a conseq…
We prove that for semi-invertible and Hölder continuous linear cocycles $A$ acting on an arbitrary Banach space and defined over a base space that satisfies the Anosov Closing Property, all exceptional Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to an ergodic invariant measure for base dynamics can be approximated with Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to ergodic measures supported on periodic orbits. Our result is applicable to a wide class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems.
We show that if the base frequency is Diophantine, then the Lyapunov exponent of a $C^{k}$ quasi-periodic $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycle is $1/2$-Hölder continuous in the almost reducible regime, if $k$ is large enough. As a consequence, we show that if the frequency is Diophantine, $k$ is large enough, and the potential is $C^k$ small, then the integrated density of states of the corresponding quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator is $1/2$-Hölder continuous.
