The renormalisation group running of fermion mixing matrices in the Standard model and beyond is studied. For the massless 1-loop running with three generations six fixed points are found. Their associated anomalous dimension matrices are calculated and the nature of each fixed point, whether attractive, repulsive or mixed, is determined. An argument is given that the fixed points found at 1-loop must remain fixed points to all orders in perturbation theory and even non-perturbatively, as they are associated with certain differential geometric properties of vector fields on the space of mixing matrices. With $N_g$ dark or sterile neutrinos there is a multiple of $N_g!$ fixed points of the fermion mixing matrix.
We review the Universal Extra-Dimensional Model compactified on a S1/Z2 orbifold, and the renormalisation group evolution of quark and lepton masses, mixing angles and phases both in the UED extension of the Standard Model and of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider two typical scenarios: all matter fields propagating in the bulk, and matter fields constrained to the brane. The resulting renormalisation group evolution equations in these scenarios are compared with the existing results in the literature, together with their implications.
We clarify some aspects of the LSZ formalism and wave function renormalisation for unstable particles in the presence of electroweak interactions when mixing and CP violation are considered. We also analyse the renormalisation of the CKM mixing matrix which is closely related to wave function renormalisation. We critically review earlier attempts to define a set of "on-shell" wave function renormalisation constants. With the aid of an extensive use of the Nielsen identities complemented by explicit calculations we corroborate that the counter term for the CKM mixing matrix must be explicitly g…
We investigate compatibility between the stochastic infrared (IR) resummation of light test fields on inflationary spacetimes and renormalisation group running of the ultra-violet (UV) physics. Using the Wilsonian approach, we derive improved stochastic Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations which consistently include the renormalisation group effects. With the exception of stationary solutions, these differ from the naive approach of simply replacing the classical potential in the standard stochastic equations with the renormalisation group improved potential. Using this new formalism, we exemp…
We determine from first principles the quark mass anomalous dimension in Nf=3 QCD between the electroweak and hadronic scales. This allows for a fully non-perturbative connection of the perturbative and non-perturbative regimes of the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. The computation is carried out to high accuracy, employing massless O(a)-improved Wilson quarks and finite-size scaling techniques. We also provide the matching factors required in the renormalisation of light quark masses from lattice computations with O(a)-improved Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik improved gauge a…
We present new results for the renormalisation and subtraction constants for the four fermion Delta F=2 operators, computed non-perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme (in the Landau gauge). From our preliminary analysis of the lattice data at beta=6.45, for the B-bar B mixing bag-parameter we obtain B_B^{RGI} = 1.46(7)(1).
We compute the renormalisation factors (Z-matrices) of the $ΔF=2$ four-quark operators needed for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) kaon mixing. We work with nf=2+1 flavours of Domain-Wall fermions whose chiral-flavour properties are essential to maintain a continuum-like mixing pattern. We introduce new RI-SMOM renormalisation schemes, which we argue are better behaved compared to the commonly-used corresponding RI-MOM one. We find that, once converted to MS, the Z-factors computed through these RI-SMOM schemes are in good agreement but differ significantly from the ones computed through the RI…
We present a full one-loop renormalisation of the Higgs sector of the Next-to-Minimal- Supersymmetric-Standard-Model (NMSSM) and its implementation within SloopS, a code for the automated computations of one-loop processes in theories beyond the Stan- dard Model. The present work is the sequel to the study we performed on the renor- malisation of the sectors of the NMSSM comprising neutralinos, charginos and sfermions thereby completing the full one-loop renormalisation of the NMSSM. We have investi- gated several renormalisation schemes based on alternative choices (on-shell or DR) of the phy…
Neutrino mixing sum rules are common to a large class of models based on the (discrete) symmetry approach to lepton flavour. In this approach the neutrino mixing matrix $U$ is assumed to have an underlying approximate symmetry form $\tilde{U}_ν$, which is dictated by, or associated with, the employed (discrete) symmetry. In such a setup the cosine of the Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$ can be related to the three neutrino mixing angles in terms of a sum rule which depends on the symmetry form of $\tilde{U}_ν$. We consider five extensively discussed possible symmetry forms of $\tilde{U}_ν$: i) bim…
We explore the impact of Renormalisation Group (RG) effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) interpretations of LHC measurements. We implement the RG running and mixing for the Wilson coefficients as obtained from the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the SMEFT into a Monte Carlo generator. This allows to consistently predict and combine in global fits collider observables characterised by different scales. As a showcase, we examine the impact of RG running in the strong coupling on the SMEFT predictions for $t \bar t$ production cross sections and differential distrib…
The Littlest Seesaw (LS) model involves two right-handed neutrinos and a very constrained Dirac neutrino mass matrix, involving one texture zero and two independent Dirac masses, leading to a highly predictive scheme in which all neutrino masses and the entire PMNS matrix is successfully predicted in terms of just two real parameters. We calculate the renormalisation group (RG) corrections to the LS predictions, with and without supersymmetry, including also the threshold effects induced by the decoupling of heavy Majorana neutrinos both analytically and numerically. We find that the predictio…
A naive application of the heavy quark expansion (HQE) yields theory estimates for the decay rate of neutral $D$ mesons that are four orders of magnitude below the experimental determination. It is well known that this huge suppression results from severe GIM cancellations. We find that this mismatch can be solved by individually choosing the renormalisation scale of the different internal quark contributions. For $b$ and $c$ hadron lifetimes, as well as for the decay rate difference of neutral $B$ mesons the effect of our scale setting procedure lies within the previously quoted theory uncert…
We present a comprehensive renormalisation group analysis of the Littlest Seesaw model involving two right-handed neutrinos and a very constrained Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix. We perform the first $χ^2$ analysis of the low energy masses and mixing angles, in the presence of renormalisation group corrections, for various right-handed neutrino masses and mass orderings, both with and without supersymmetry. We find that the atmospheric angle, which is predicted to be near maximal in the absence of renormalisation group corrections, may receive significant corrections for some non-supers…
An on-shell renormalisation programme for the chargino/neutralino and the sfermion sectors within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model as implemented in a fully automated code, SloopS, for the calculation of one-loop processes at the colliders and in astrophysics, is presented. This is a sequel to our study in arXiv:0807.4668 [hep-ph] where an on-shell renormalisation of the Higgs (and the gauge/fermion) sector is performed. The issue of mixing is treated in a unified and coherent manner in all these sectors, in particular we give some new insight into the renormalisation of the mixing an…
We study the renormalisation group running of the cosmological and the Newton constant, where the renormalisation scale is given by the inverse of the radius of the cosmological event horizon. In this framework, we discuss the future evolution of the universe, where we find stable de Sitter solutions, but also "big crunch"-like and "big rip"-like events, depending on the choice of the parameters in the model.
We present a new method for renormalisation group improvement of the effective potential of a quantum field theory with an arbitrary number of scalar fields. The method amounts to solving the renormalisation group equation for the effective potential with the boundary conditions chosen on the hypersurface where quantum corrections vanish. This hypersurface is defined through a suitable choice of a field-dependent value for the renormalisation scale. The method can be applied to any order in perturbation theory and it is a generalisation of the standard procedure valid for the one-field case. I…
We perform a renormalisation group (RG) analysis of neutrino masses and mixing angles in the see-saw mechanism in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with three right-handed neutrinos, including the effects of the heavy neutrino thresholds. We focus on the case that one of the right-handed neutrinos provides the dominant contribution to the 23 block of the light Majorana matrix, causing its determinant to approximately vanish and giving an automatic neutrino mass hierarchy, so called single right-handed neutrino dominance which may arise from a U(1) family symmetry. In these models radia…
We discuss the renormalisation properties of the full set of $ΔF=2$ operators involved in BSM processes, including the definition of RGI versions of operators that exhibit mixing under RG transformations. As a first step for a fully non-perturbative determination of the scale-dependent renormalization factors and their runnings, we introduce a family of appropriate Schrödinger Functional schemes, and study them in perturbation theory. This allows, in particular, to determine the NLO anomalous dimensions of all $ΔF=1,2$ operators in these schemes. Finally, we discuss the systematic uncertaintie…
We discuss the renormalisation properties of the complete set of $ΔB = 2$ four-quark operators with the heavy quark treated in the static approximation. We elucidate the role of heavy quark symmetry and other symmetry transformations in constraining their mixing under renormalisation. By employing the Schroedinger functional, a set of non-perturbative renormalisation conditions can be defined in terms of suitable correlation functions. As a first step in a fully non-perturbative determination of the scale-dependent renormalisation factors, we evaluate these conditions in lattice perturbation t…
We study renormalisation group (RG) corrections relevant for leptogenesis in the case of family symmetry models such as the Altarelli-Feruglio A4 model of tri-bimaximal lepton mixing or its extension to tri-maximal mixing. Such corrections are particularly relevant since in large classes of family symmetry models, to leading order, the CP violating parameters of leptogenesis would be identically zero at the family symmetry breaking scale, due to the form dominance property. We find that RG corrections violate form dominance and enable such models to yield viable leptogenesis at the scale of ri…
Using a physical renormalisation scheme we derive mass-dependent renormalisation group equations for the running of the Higgs quartic coupling within the Standard Model. Subsequently, we accurately take into account weak scale thresholds, resulting in a reduction of the error in the determination of the maximum $M_t$ required for absolute stability of the vacuum to 0.28 GeV. For the first time, we conclusively establish the fate of the electroweak vacuum, finding that absolute stability of the Higgs vacuum state is excluded at 99.98% C.L. We also discuss the consequences when this new result i…
Functional renormalisation group approach is applied to a system of kaons with finite chemical potential. A set of approximate flow equations for the effective couplings is derived and solved. At high scale the system is found to be at the normal phase whereas at some critical value of the running scale it undergoes the phase transition (PT) to the phase with a spontaneously broken symmetry with the kaon condensate as an order parameter. The value of the condensate turns out to be quite sensitive to the kaon-kaon scattering length.
The neutrino oscillation experiments increasingly point towards a mixing pattern that can be parametrised with two near maximal and one small mixing angle. We investigate whether such a mixing pattern can be generated as a fixed point of renormalisation group evolution.
We investigate the renormalisation group effects induced on neutrino mass and mixing parameters in a triplet-extended minimal supersymmetric standard model where a vector-like pair of hypercharge $\pm 1$ triplet superfields is added. We first rederive the one-loop renormalisation group equation for the effective neutrino mass operator and, for the case in which this operator originates solely from the decoupling of the triplets, the corresponding equations for neutrino masses, mixing parameters and CP-violating phases. We compare our results with the ones obtained previously, and quantify the …
We present full renormalisation group equations for the MSSM with R-parity violation, including all soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The inclusion of dimensionless R-parity violating couplings can generate many possible low energy effects through the generation of off-diagonal soft masses violating lepton and quark flavour, and through the generation of lepton-Higgs mixing. We discuss the relation between the weak and unification scale R-parity violation and study the effects on neutrino mass generation and $μ\to eγ$.
We investigate the impact on low energy flavour mixing phenomena of the renormalisation group running of parameters in supersymmetric theories. We have explicitly chosen flavour dependent supergravity couplings. The renormalisation group equations are displayed in general matrix form. We work in a scale dependent basis such that the hierarchy in the quark masses can be more easily utilised. Simple analytic solutions are provided in matrix form (for general boundary conditions) when only the third generation Yukawa couplings are retained in the renormalisation group equations. We solve the evol…
The application of the exact renormalisation group to a many-fermion system with a short-range attractive force is studied. We assume a simple ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects and derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The mean-field results are recovered if boson-loop effects are omitted. The calculations with two different forms of the regulator was shown to lead to s…
A few years ago, it had been shown that effects stemming from renormalisation group running can be quite large in the scotogenic model, where neutrinos obtain their mass only via a 1-loop diagram (or, more generally, in many models in which the light neutrino mass is generated via quantum corrections at loop-level). We present a new computation of the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) for the scotogenic model, thereby updating previous results. We discuss the matching in detail, in particular in what regards the different mass spectra possible for the new particles involved. We furthermor…
We compute the one-loop renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model effective operators to order $v^4/Λ^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $Λ$ the unknown new physics threshold. We concentrate on the effects triggered by pairs of the leading dimension-six interactions, namely those that can arise at tree level in weakly-coupled ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the interplay between positivity bounds and the form of the anomalous dimensions; the non renormalisation of the $S$ and $U$ parame…
We study the application of the exact renormalisation group to a many-fermion system with a short-range attractive force. We introduce a boson field to describe pairing effects, and take a simple ansatz for the effective action. We derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The initial conditions are obtained by renormalising the interaction to fit the scattering length in vacuum. At some critical value of the running scale, the numerical solutions show a phase transition to a gapped phase. Standard results are recovered if…
The supersymmetry transformation relating the Konishi operator to its lowest descendant in the 10 of SU(4) is not manifest in the N=1 formulation of the theory but rather uses an equation of motion. On the classical level one finds one operator, the unintegrated chiral superpotential. In the quantum theory this term receives an admixture by a second operator, the Yang-Mills part of the Lagrangian. It has long been debated whether this "anomalous" contribution is affected by higher loop corrections. We present a first principles calculation at the second non-trivial order in perturbation theory…
The application of the nonperturbative renormalisation group approach to a system with two fermion species is studied. Assuming a simple ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects we derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The case of two fermions with different masses but coinciding Fermi surfaces is considered. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The large mass difference is found to disfavour the formation of pai…
Using Mandelstam's approximation to the gluon Dyson-Schwinger equation we calculate the gluon self-energy in a renormalisation group invariant fashion. We obtain a non-perturbative $β$ function. The scaling behaviour near the ultraviolet stable fixed point is in good agreement with perturbative QCD. No further fixed point for positive values of the coupling is found: $α_S$ increases without bound in the infrared.
The application of the exact renormalisation group to symmetric as well as asymmetric many-fermion systems with a short-range attractive force is studied. Assuming an ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations has been derived. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The mean-field results are recovered if boson-loop effects are omitted. The calculations with two different forms of the re…
We perform a renormalisation group analysis of the SO(10) model proposed by Chang, Masiero and Murayama, which links the large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle to loop-induced transitions between right-handed b and s quarks. We compute the impact on B_s-B_s-bar mixing and find that the mass difference in the B_s system can exceed its Standard Model value by a factor of 16.
We study renormalization group running effects on neutrino mixing patterns when a (type I) seesaw model is implemented by suitable flavour symmetries. We are particularly interested in mass-independent mixing patterns to which the widely studied tribimaximal mixing pattern belongs. In this class of flavour models, the running contribution from neutrino Yukawa coupling, which is generally dominant at energies above the seesaw threshold, can be absorbed by a small shift on neutrino mass eigenvalues leaving mixing angles unchanged. Consequently, in the whole running energy range, the change in mi…
We compute the hadronic matrix elements of the four-quark operators relevant for $K^0-{\bar K^0}$ mixing beyond the Standard Model. Our results are from lattice QCD simulations with $n_f=2+1$ flavours of domain-wall fermion, which exhibit continuum-like chiral-flavour symmetry. The simulations are performed at two different values of the lattice spacing ($a\sim0.08$ and $a\sim 0.11 \, \fm $) and with lightest unitary pion mass $\sim 300\, \MeV$. For the first time, the full set of relevant four-quark operators is renormalised non-perturbatively through RI-SMOM schemes; a detailed description o…
We calculate the running of low-energy neutrino parameters from the bottom up, parameterizing the unknown seesaw parameters in terms of the dominance matrix $R$. We find significant running only if the $R$ matrix is non-trivial and the light-neutrino masses are moderately degenerate. If the light-neutrino masses are very hierarchical, the quark-lepton complementarity relation $θ_c + θ_{12} = π/4$ is quite stable, but $θ_{13,23}$ may run beyond their likely future experimental errors. The running of the oscillation phase $δ$ is enhanced by the smallness of $θ_{13}$, and jumps in the mixing angl…
The Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark self-energy is solved for the case of the third and fourth quark generations. The exchanges of standard model gluons and Higgs bosons are taken into account. It is found that Higgs boson exchange dominates quark self-energy in the ultraviolet region for sufficiently large input quark masses, causing the running quark propagator mass to increase with energy-scale. No running of the quark mixing angles is found for input quark masses up to and including 500 GeV.
The use of a running coupling constant in renormalizable theories is well known, but the implementation of this idea for effective field theories with a dimensional coupling constant is in general less useful. Nevertheless there are multiple attempts to define running couplings including the effects of gravity, with varying conclusions. We sort through many of the issues involved, most particularly the idea of operator mixing and also the kinematics of crossing, using calculations in Yukawa and lambda phi^4 theory as illustrative examples. We remain in the perturbative regime. In some theories…
We derive simple analytical formulae for the renormalization group running of neutrino masses, leptonic mixing angles and CP phases, which allow an easy understanding of the running. Particularly for a small angle theta_13 the expressions become very compact, even when non-vanishing CP phases are present. Using these equations we investigate: (i) the influence of Dirac and Majorana phases on the evolution of all parameters, (ii) the implications of running neutrino parameters for leptogenesis, (iii) changes of the mass bounds from WMAP and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, relevant f…
The standard theoretical framework to deal with weak decays of heavy mesons is the so-called weak effective Hamiltonian. It involves the short-distance Wilson coefficients, which depend on the renormalisation scale $μ$. For specific calculations one has to evolve the Wilson coefficients down from the electroweak scale $μ=M_W$ to the typical mass scale of the decay under consideration. This is done by solving a renormalisation group equation for the effective operator basis. In this paper the results of a consistent two-step running of the $c \to u \,\ell^+\ell^-$ Wilson coefficients for dimens…
We study the renormalization group running of the tri-bimaximal mixing predicted by the two typical $S_4$ flavor models at leading order. Although the textures of the mass matrices are completely different, the evolution of neutrino mass and mixing parameters is found to display approximately the same pattern. For both normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy spectrum, the quantum corrections to both atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixing angles are so small that they can be neglected. The evolution of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ depends on $\tanβ$ and neutrino mass spectrum, the deviation…
We analyze the effects of charged lepton corrections and renormalization group (RG) running on the low energy predictions of theories which accurately predict tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing at the high energy scale. In particular we focus on GUT inspired see-saw models with accurate tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing at the GUT scale, in which the charged lepton corrections are Cabibbo-like and give rise to sum rules valid at the GUT scale. We study numerically the RG corrections to a variety of such neutrino mixing sum rules in order to assess their accuracy and reliability when comparing them to f…
We show that, in the low-scale type-I seesaw model, renormalization group running of neutrino parameters may lead to significant modifications of the leptonic mixing angles in view of so-called seesaw threshold effects. Especially, we derive analytical formulas for radiative corrections to neutrino parameters in crossing the different seesaw thresholds, and show that there may exist enhancement factors efficiently boosting the renormalization group running of the leptonic mixing angles. We find that, as a result of the seesaw threshold corrections to the leptonic mixing angles, various flavor …
In this article, a complete analysis of the three muonic lepton-flavour violating processes $μ\to e γ$, $μ\to 3e$ and coherent nuclear $μ\to e$ conversion is performed in the framework of an effective theory with dimension six operators defined below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale $m_W$. The renormalisation-group evolution of the Wilson coefficients between $m_W$ and the experimental scale is fully taken into account at the leading order in QCD and QED, and explicit analytic and numerical evolution matrices are given. As a result, muonic decay and conversion rates are interpreted as f…
Neutrino mass sum rules are an important class of predictions in flavour models relating the Majorana phases to the neutrino masses. This leads, for instance, to enormous restrictions on the effective mass as probed in experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay. While up to now these sum rules have in practically all cases been taken to hold exactly, we will go here beyond that. After a discussion of the types of corrections that could possibly appear and elucidating on the theory behind neutrino mass sum rules, we estimate and explicitly compute the impact of radiative corrections, as thes…
We develop a model of ours fitting the quark and lepton masses and mixing angles by removing from the model a Higgs field previously introduced to organise a large atmospheric mixing angle for neutrino oscillations. Due to the off-diagonal elements dominating in the see-saw neutrino mass matrix the large atmospheric mixing angle comes essentially by itself. It turns out that we have now only five adjustable Higgs field vacuum expectation values needed to fit all the masses and mixings order of magnitudewise taking into account the renormalisation group runnings in all sectors. The CHOOZ angle …
We show that in see-saw models with bimaximal lepton mixing at the GUT scale and with zero CP phases, the solar mixing angle theta_{12} generically evolves towards sizably smaller values due to Renormalization Group effects, whereas the evolution of theta_{13} and theta_{23} is comparatively small. The currently favored LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem can thus be obtained in a natural way from bimaximal mixing at the GUT scale. We present numerical examples for the evolution of the leptonic mixing angles in the Standard Model and the MSSM, in which the current best-fit values of the…
